Modern Day Classic. They couldn't have been more right. This is one of the most original and beautiful car designs of all time.
The 2nd. Generation Charger would not be, without Richard Sias.
They really knew they had a gem. Still the most wanted car for the muscle fan.
There's not another car in existence that is as beautiful as the 1968-1970 Dodge Chargers Even by todays standards with all of the advancements and technology There is a certain air of Royalty to the original Dodge Charger that no car can match.

Dodge King I would say that the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona is even better looking than the R/T Charger. Its also more sought after than the R/T since not a lot were made, which is why they often sold at actions for over $500,000.
@@dodgeking9194 There's the 1970 Plymouth GTX or if you're talking any cars, the most beautiful ever made, as far as I'm concerned, is the 1995 Lamborghini Diablo SE30 Jota. Having said this, did you know the Plymouth Superbird and Dodge Charger Daytona both had a lower drag co-efficient than most of the supercars of the 90s!
I do wish they had made the 69 Charger with the grill of the 70 though; never was a fan of that split grill but I liked the rear lights more on the 69.

I mean the very Idea that a car came from the factory with what is essentially an aircraft wing attached it itself is amazing How they designed it to fit so perfectly. @@m-71tx26 I like the '70 most, because it's the most different. I like the one-piece loop front bumper, it looks cleaner than the multiple chrome pieces of the '69. I also like the taillights with the single aluminum finish panel around both lenses than 2 separate lenses, again because it just looks cleaner to me. But no doubt, all 3 years were beautiful!
1969 Charger was a favorite of mine. It still is.
I remember when these were "just cars" back in '73...The kid 3 houses over had a '69 Hemi Charger; My brother drove a '63 Impala SS; My old man had a '64 Marauder; Neighbor on left had a '68 Polara 440; the other side a '70 GTO Convertible. One of my sister's BF's had a '69 Road Runner; My other Sister's BF had a '68 T-Bird with Suicide Doors. Being a Car Crazy 9yo these cars are etched in my mind because everything changed after '73; People started to buy Opel's, Datsuns, and Honda's...But how many Toyota B-210's do you see at a car show?

I like the 68 the best. I didn't used to, but the quad tail lights have grown on me and are symmetrical to the quad headlights from a design standpoint.
I had 68' green Charger, with green vinal top. Coolest car I ever owned.
You know I always liked the 1969 better But like you I have to admit the 1968 really grew on me too Its just as bad ass and actually it was the one that started Dodge fever for the Charger

I have one of these cars in my garage now. I've owned it since I bought it as a derelict wreck on the side of the road in 1993. It was originally the exact color as the SE version shown! I was stunned.....I never saw what my car looked like new. It was in bad shape when I found it.... Its now Sublime with a gloss black hood and black back stripe, vintage crager SS wheels. I made a custom 6 pack scoop to fit the hood properly. It had no interior except for the headliner and rear door panels so I retrofit an entire 1970 Charger dash and interior in it from a parts car I bought. The 1970 seats are way better than the 69's. I have buckets nut no console, just the big hurst 4 speed shifter. I run a 440 with 2:76 gears. I'm in Texas and the toll roads here are 85mph. Unless you run an overdrive, you ain't running those useless 4:10's. I run out of nerve before I run out of top end.
Awesome!! And you can say that again about the seats. I stupidly threw mine away, should have sold them! But they had zero support and no headrest (build date of November 68).
@@MrWolfTickets The headrests weren't mandated until 1969, they're not really there for comfort it's to reduce the risk of neck injury if you get rear ended.

Seriously though...there are very few cars in the world that are classics the minute they come to the showroom. The '65 Mustang was one. The '64 GTO was another.
And then there's the '68-70 Charger. These cars, quite arguably, are the single finest muscle cars ever crafted by the hand of man and the designers of Detroit (back when Detroit was a great place to be, and not the "Escape From New York" set backdrop it is these days). They were absolutely perfect, no matter how you optioned them.

The use of the term "Muscle Car" is extremely rare during it's heyday. Usually it was pony- or super-car. When he said that, I was really surprised.
Manufacturers didn't mind magazines using the term. It helped sales. But didn't like it used in house. You'll notice that in many ads during the time, they'll compare engine sizes, but rarely mention horse power. By 1969-70 insurance companies were seriously upping premiums on the higher end muscle cars. This priced a lot of potential customers out of the market because no insurance means no financing. The average guy who wanted a true big block, high HP muscle car didn't have the cash to buy one outright, so no sales.
And if baby boomers referred to muscle cars as "super cars" in the 1960s, what did boomer parents call them before the 1960s. Evidence suggests the term was "super stocks". The NHRA created a class for factory hot rods in 1955, and called it super stock. For May 1957, Motor Life magazine published an article that reviewed all factory muscle cars available to the public at reasonable (non-ferrari) prices.. It repeatedly refers to them as super stocks.

I've had a good handful of old Mopars,(Darts, Valiant, Furies, a GTX, Polara and a couple of Monacos) a few Fords too. I never had one with the optional rear defroster.
In the winter it was just a given that the rear window was fogged up.
Those were the good old days.

I had a 68' green Charger with green vinal top. It was one of the Coolest cars ever made. Really enjoyed driving it and taking my friends out for a spin!
I had a 69 r/t-se in triple black with the red stripe, and a 4 speed. My car was optioned with the 15x7 inch magnum 500s, ps, pdb, Dana 60 with 3.54 sure grip, center console, am/fm search tune radio with 3 speakers ( 2 in the back) and dual outside rear view mirrors. I sold the car to a collector in 1993. I had 2 complaints with the car. 1st was the blind spots in the rear. Despite the mirrors, you couldn't see when backing up. It had to be judged, no pun intended.. 2nd was the 4 speed. The shifter was very stiff and notchy. And the clutch was very hard to push. In traffic, it would wear you out! However, the 440 was wonderful. Gobs of power. The only thing I did to it was add electronic ignition and hardened valve seats to run on no lead gas. It ran fantastic. The new owner hasn't driven it since 2012, but the car has been featured in various mags including Mopar Muscle. The Glover report said the car is 1 of 87 as optioned. Worth a pretty penny now!

I remember in the late 70’s and early 80’s you could pick these up for a song. The big problem is that most had rotted quarter Panals or floorboards. Still, a real beauty of a car!! I almost bought a used one in the early 80’s that needed a lot of work for a lousy $300 bucks but I passed on it!
In my opinion, one of the greatest most beautiful cars ever built, and ,of course , the Dodge challenger, the 65- 66 Chevrolet Impala and some of the Ford Mustangs were also fabulous cars, but I think these two Dodge motor cars were top notch.
I've always wanted one, but, unfortunately, they're way above my budget, but it's great to see these videos here on TH-cam .👍👍 👍

in the fall of 68 my folks took me and my brothers down to the Dodge dealer. They traded in a '68 Red Chrysler 300 and ordered a brand new 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with every option you could get 440. The dealer even delivered the car with Cragar SS wheels and Firestone Wide Ovals.. I was the oldest so I got all of the "Scat Pack" stuff.. that would be my dream car today.

I love these films. How many people noticed the early production parts on this car that weren't on actual production '69 Chargers? This car has a '68 Dash pad, the '69/'70 was straight. This car also has a '68 and earlier shifter knob, the '69/'70 was almost round and simulated wood. The last thing I noticed was the tail stripe. The "R/T" is made to look 3D while the regular production cars were just cut out evenly. Did anyone else see anything that didn't make it into production?
Yep, this film has at the end Sept. 1, 1968, meaning that the long shot showing the inside could have came from a 68 or actually from the early production 1969 car which had those 68 parts in it. Remembering that he also said that all chargers after Jan. 1, 1969 will have headrest as standard; I think if it is a 68 made 1969 Charger with the 68 dash and shifter knob etc. that it is pretty awesome. I'm not trying to sound like a know it all but I'm just typing this because I have a 69 produced 70 Charger, the only thing I can spot from 69 is the taillights, which after Jan. 1, 1970 would have been equipped with reflectors. My car was made on the 10th day in October, I wish there were more things to stand out on the cars made mid-year for the new production models... It's just pretty cool to spot.. Do you have a charger?
@@DaisysmellowyellowPlymouth I have a '68 Charger. I've owned 1 other '68 and 2 '69's in the past. I know with GM cars they would often use early pre-production hand built cars to do dealer promos and early advertising but those cars were never issued VIN numbers and were usually destroyed afterwards. There was a mid '80's corvette that slipped through the cracks and sold on Barret Jackson a couple of years back. It could never be licensed so it was really just a museum piece. I really think a one off car like the Charger in this video is awesome and unique. But then all of them have a long story to tell. If you haven't owned yours since it was new just think of all of the past owners who loved it and then lost it at some point!
That R/T SE is crazy loaded.....Hemi ( if its the same car with "hood up" shot) with 273 miles, wonder if it is still alive as a demo/sales bank car.......I would have the sunroof and white buckets on mine
I own a 70 RT/SE 440 AND A 69 A-12 440 6 BBL ROAD RUNNER.
HAD THEM BOTH FOR 37 YRS. MY GRANDPA BOUGHT IT AT GRAND SPAULDING DODGE.
THEY ARE PERFECT .
THE ROAD RUNNER IS A STREET CAR BUT SPENDS HIS TIME AT THE STRIP.
THE RT/SE IS A STRIP AND STREET DAILY EXCEPT WINTER.
BOTH THE 6 BBL AND THE 440 MAGNUM WERE TAKEN OUT IN 1982.
ME AND A FRIEND FOUND A 426 MAX WEDGE. A NEIGHBOR PASSED AND HIS WIFE SAID HER HUSBAND WANTED THE MOPAR KID TO HAVE IT. IT HAD 3,875 MILES.
SHE REALLY WANTED TO GIVE IT TO ME BUT I COULDNT. SHE DID NOT HAVE ALOT OF MONEY SO I CAME BACK WITH 1800.OO AND LEFT IT ON HER COUNTER. I BUILT IT.... MY 14 BUILD AND BY 16 YRS OLD. MY GRANDFATHER HAD ME BUILDING SINCE I WAS 14. WATCHING AND HELPING HIM SINCE 9 AFTER SCHOOL.
I DROPPED THAT ENGINE IN THE RUNNER. ANOTHER 440 BLOCK WENT IN THE Charger.

The Charger 10.22!! Had to keep the cam the compression gear all lower since i would be driving it 8 months out of the year on the street. Engines have been rebuilt by me 2 times. I knew how good they were and valuable that max wedge was i made and still do make sure its 1/4 at a time. Hard miles but she gets good care. The 440 as well.

Had a white '68 Charger with a black vinyl roof and a 318 cu.in. in high school in 1971 . The girls loved it !
I had one. An SE with just the 318 2barrel/automatic. Copper with white top/tan interior. All the options you could throw at it. Front discs were what killed it, sadly. Couldn't fix them. They didn't make the gasket I needed. I drove it for a solid year - no brakes at all. Scary/fun.

Finally, the best year for Chrysler. I wouldn’t pass on a ‘68 Charger, but I’ve always thought those taillights were ugly as hell. The new taillights, grille and side markers made the ‘69 the best looking Charger ever. Only lasted the one year though. Things went downhill from 1970 on. Same goes for the Plymouth Satellite/Roadrunner.

1969 was the first year for Charger SE as a trim level. It became a separate model in the Charger lineup two years later.

Well...I'm 5' 10" and 170 lbs, 56 years old and I have a 1970 Charger 500. :) So there's me, anyway.

I like the little "beep" in between every slide. I wanted a Charger since the Dukes in 79. A 1969 with a 440 or a 426 hemispherical head. Nowadays, you can't touch a clean original 69 for less than $80k minimum. And that's a 383.
Save for a few models (e.g., Challenger, Camaro, Mustang, Continental), I find cars these days to be so boring-looking. I understand the focus now is practicality, and that the appliances on wheels we call SUVs are now the norm. But I wish there was a little bit more excitement in the automotive industry design-wise.

You are SO right and even with the top shelf muscle cars of today they are OK I guess but Everybody has to throw superchargers under the hood so people don't fully fall asleep with todays cars But look at a hellcat compared to a regular charger/challengers unless you know what you are looking at theres really nothing that sets them apart. Drive a hellcat down the street and nobody notices Drive one of these original 60's Chargers down the street and you better be prepared for a lot of attention
It is subjective, but I share a similar view with you. Majority of the car these days lack that "simplicity" they just look too complicated.
The cars between 1995-2008 had a perfect balance of "Classic & Modern design"

In 1982,when I was 17 I bought a 69 Charger R/T with a 440 4 speed for $800.00 , it was in pretty rough shape ,but it ran great . The guy I bought it from had started to strip it down for a drag car , and had stripped the interior - no carpet, no headliner and no back seat , just a sheet of aluminum separating the back seat area from the trunk . I drove the snot out of it for about a year or so and sold it when a guy offered me $2500.00 - I thought I was a financial genius lol . My only consolation is it got fully restored , and not wrecked like most of the other Chargers of that era .
I have a 69 charger rt se 440 4 speed I bought in 86. For 1.500 that's pretty insane. Its restored not not hardly a net rust just faded and int was baked

Hot Wheels. 1969 Charger but my favorite Hot Wheel was 1936 Ford.

This is great. I'd have been happy with a Coronet or Sattelite from that era (68-70).
69 Charger showed up for cheap. $750 in '77.Wasn't perfect (cheap paint, drivers side door didn't line up, etc) but it had the good stuff (383 Mag, 727, SureGrip). I've missed it since '80. got hit while parked.
Movies with car chases were a drive in staple in the seventies and Chargers were often used because they were so durable and could take so much punishment.
One of the very few cars as a tall guy I could fit in very comfortably, take note, the Datsun 240Z was very comfortable too.
Wish I was older back then, Would have bought two.
I'll take an R/T SE with the 440 4 bbl and Torqueflite with the centre console
And you'd have a mid to upper 14 second/97 MPH (quarter mile) car as a result, even if equipped with the "modern radials" of your choice.

Little did Dodge realise the Charger was indeed a classic and it was re-released 45 years later...a great looking and performing car.

1975, I was a junior in high school. My first car was a 1969 Charger. White with a green vinyl top, 383 magnum with automatic on the floor. I paid $1,200 for it. If I remember correctly, my monthly payment was around $65 a month. I replaced the automatic transmission with a 4 speed on the floor. I owned it for 2 years and sold it for $1,000. I SOLD IT FOR $1,000.
My old man owns a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T SE with electronic windows and sun roof they only made small numbers of them. The sad part it, it’s rusting in a garage because we both to buzz to put these car back together

In the later 80s, I found very few '68 - '70 Chargers in the L.A. area for sale, let alone on the street. Actually, while there were plenty of old Chevys, Pontiacs, and Fords of all types, there were few Mopar muscle cars. Plenty of 60s 'nerd' Mopars because of all the engineers working aerospace, but you would see more Ferraris than Challengers. Most any muscle Mopar I found for sale were 318 equipped, 383 if I was lucky. Chargers, from what I understand, were bought up and used up from 'Dukes of Hazard.' There was a 'Dukes...' car parked on the street near my inlaws in Camarillo until the mid/late 2000s (I met my wife in the mid-90s and remember it then), but that was the exception, not the rule.

Great car, though. Had a 73 with a 400 but it was nothing like the 68-70 generation.

I guess that's why they offered leaf spring rear suspensions as opposed to GM's far more sophisticated coil spring/control arm arrangement.
Also, GM's build quality was far superior to Chrysler Corp's during the period.
While Chrysler muscle cars were very cool in their own right and I've always been a fan, the truth of the matter is that many bought them over GM products because the Chrysler cars were less expensive.

This promo refers to the Charger as a "sports car" in some aspect, but I would have thought the Barracuda was more sporty than the Charger if not sized more to compete with the Firebird and the Cougar, which are more pony cars. The Charger looked like it was meant to go after the Torino and the GTO or even the bigger Pontiacs or Skylarks, all of which had strong performance and luxury options.

Even when new, these cars drive like old trucks by today's standards. Still, the styling and road presence were quite cool.
I remember when the 66' Charger came out. I was looking at the ad in a magazine. I was an avid car buff. I was 9. I was not impressed with the FB styling. The only Chrysler product I loved then was the 65' Crown Imperial. I didn't begin to respect chrysler product styling until the 67 Barracuda. It was OK but the Mustang FB and Camaros were my first choice. But when 68' hit with the new Charger I was all onboard! Ended up buying a 69' Roadrunner in the mid 70s. Ironically my car today is a 17' Super Sport Camaro 6 speed.
The 69 charger shown in this promo has a 68 dash pad (comes to a point /\ instead of straight across like it should be ) Interesting...
