    Love the detailing and physics in Legacy, but still gotta appreciate what they were able to pull off in the early and late 2000s, given the crappy budget and limited HW capability. My favourite of the franchise used to be the Chamber of Secrets in 2002. The environment was immersive and haunting.

    One thing I’ll add as an avid book reader. I noticed that a lot of features in Hogwarts legacy are based of descriptions from the book rather than how it shows up in the movie. A lot of the exterior is similar to the movies but inside seems more based on the book description. Two easy examples is the Grand Stair Case in Hogwarts Legacy is more based on how the book describes the area rather than what’s shown in the movie. The second example is the location of the Common room entrance. The movie shows the entrance to be in the area of the grand staircase but in the book it describes the entrance being close to the staircase but down its own hall way as we see in Hogwarts Legacy. I love both versions but can definitely appreciate the attention given from the books honestly

    Another important detail in old Harry Potter games was how long they had to make them, they needed to release them quickly after each movie so they didn't have like 4-6 years that games like Hogwarts Legacy and others have. Just one to two years and after release instantly you need to start working on the other.

      Though some of the old games reused a lot of things from previous games. Ps2 Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets had basically the same castle. Also Order of the Phoenix and Half Blood Prince were very similar. The biggest difference can be seen between Prisoner of Azkaban and Order the Phoenix and inbetween those they had that rushed dumbsterfire of Goblet of Fire. Also the games were a lot shorter in terms of story and world. Not saying smaller size is automatically a bad thing but it definitely affects the time needed for development.

      In this case, sure, but in many, if not most modern games, the warm coloring and overly realistic environments - are pretty boring, overused and make locations seem less creative/artistic, more similar to one another.
      Also, artists often can't pull out details without making your eyes having a hard time to focus on one particular thing with all the "Visual noise" you see on the screen.
      Which is why the older, more outdated technology actually made games look better, in a way, because game developers had limited space and resources which's forced them to only show you what they really wanted to show you, without all the extra unnecessary foliage, rocks, etc. - which often is just copy pasted and pretty randomly spread across the ground.
      This is also why Open World games are so boring to look at / explore, for the most part.

    I played both OotP and HBP on Wii and they were absolutely great games! The side-to-side comparison here makes it look quite harsh, but Hogwarts was just as big than in HL, without all the loading between towers. I actually preferred Hogwarts' map in the Wii games, it had more locations from the movies and made a bit more sense to me. The entire Defence Against the Dark Arts Tower with the baroque style and music is a weird addition in my opinion. I'm wondering where that concept came from...

  • @icarus1065
    @icarus1065 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    I've only played HL and I love that the castle isn't dark all throughout (except for places not usually explored by students) In daytime, it has a warmer feeling and feels very student appropriate as it gets. But come night time, it definitely feels eerie. I also should note that this Hogwarts is from an earlier timeline, a century before Harry's or even Dumbledore's time. So the castle is understandably in good condition. The Wizarding War first occurred in the 19th century which would explain why the Hogwarts we know is not as "glamorous" as it used to be. Also, Filch is a terrible caretaker compared to Gladwin Moon. See his journal entry where he wrote: I must remain steadfast. If I falter, to whom will the students look for guidance in these magical halls? Hogwarts would certainly fall into a state of utter chaos if I were to abandon my post for even one day. Filch other than being a Squib which doesn't make his job easier, also hated the students.
    HL have flaws that frustrate me in terms of gameplay (a lot of it actually) but the design very much exceeded my book expectations. Devs have a lot to improve on and that's ok. We have something to look forward to. The 2009 game is great for its time. I know young me would've been obsessed

    Half Blood Prince still looks pretty nice, but in terms of gameplay, it was just a shallow walking simulator throwing fetch quest after fetch quest to distract the player. The first 3 HP games, particularly the PS2 versions, while taking some liberties in how they depicted Hogwarts, were much more in line with Hogwarts Legacy's scope. Even Order of the Phoenix, while sharing the same core gameplay as HBP, had more interesting minigames.

Dungeons are short, Puzzles are repetitive and dead simple, collectibles are boring, combat is spamming the same 4 spells (yellow, purple, red + basic cast) over and over, brewing potions is literally just a menu, stealth is overpowered because the AI is so braindead. And the worst thing is that the only reward for doing anything is boring loot with arbitrary stats that don't have any tangible impact on gameplay.

As for combat, I have some gripes with how some spells have been handled : I don't like Stupefy being tied ONLY to counters and Petrificus Totalus strictly to stealth, as Glacius and Arresto Momentum feel like weaker versions that could have been used a bit more for interacting with the enviroment than just combat.

    I loved the Order of the Phoenix Harry Potter game. I wish Hogwarts Legacy took after that and the movies more with the construction of certain areas. I mean, how did we not get the moving grand staircase? Also I felt like the older games were a bit more free and sandboxy in comparison. You could destroy and repair random things, you could levitate and throw objects at people or a stack them to get to particular locations, and you could start fights with any student(s) that you wanted. It just felt more interactive overall. I also liked the shortcut doorways that you had to unlock one way or another. With that said, I still prefer Hogwarts Legacy, but I really wish they added more sandbox elements and stayed closer to the films design wise. I mean, I can freeze any object with fire and nothing will happen (except for one specific interaction, in which you can't even light it back on fire afterwards). Hopefully they can make a more sandboxy and immersive game in the next one. Though I am excited for whatever DLC they have coming along currently.

    Question: what are Expelliarmus and Stupefy like in most of the video games? Like, I'm guessing there isn't a game where you simply disarm your enemy, because why would you do that and not directly beat them? Besides, the two spells have a very similar effect in the moves: knocking someone backwards. Do they both present that equivalent move in any games?

    Certain things about the harry potter game seem more magical than the Hogwarts game; like how they cast the spells (Lumos) and how the stairs move, even how they fly on a broom seems way better than the hogwarts legacy gameplay. @Clem F no, it's totally different. Flying on a broomstick shouldn't be easy, and in HP games it seemed to be something simple, very hard. just go through the hoops without moving too much. Hogwarts Legacy shows the complexity and precision needed to fly

      @1stMikeWhite ปีที่แล้ว

      @Clem F I just watched the clips over and I'm pretty sure in the Hogwartz Legacy gameplay the broom is flying at its top speed lol. I've watched most of the gameplay of H.L. and saw the lessons they took on the broom etc. as well. Comparing thoee 2 clips though, the Harry potter game looks so much better (more magical) because when the camera pans as harry turns back into the ring, you get an affect feeling as if you're actually flying and cutting a sharp turn. Youre trying to keep up with the stich just like in the movie, although I do agree it may be too easy for the controls as this other commenter said. Whereas on the Hogwartz game, I really don't like how the camera angle is controlled. I haven't played it but I'm assuming it's manually controlled by the joystick. Both games are doing the exact same thing and even though the graphics aren't the same at all, the harry potter game just looks better and embodies the feeling of flying better.

      @@obiwankenobi687 Not at all! A lot of things are different and based on the books. The only areas that are inspired (but not the same) to the movies are really a short list.

    • @obiwankenobi687
      @obiwankenobi687 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bio452 the entire outside of the castle is modeled on the films. It’s an 1800’s version of the movie hogwarts model. Different architecture here and there but based on the films. Same with the location of the headmasters office, grand staircase, great hall, gamekeeper hut, potions classroom, owlery, tapestry room, potions masters storage room, greenhouses, transfiguration classroom, clocktower, bridge, astronomy tower, astronomy courtyard, they all match their locations in the film on the hogwarts model.
      You could point to different locations on the movie hogwarts model and they all line up to what’s presented to us in the game. Then the ghost designs, based off the film versions, fat lady portrait design, common room designs, hogsmeade station design, hogwarts express design, creature design, bathroom designs etc. they’re all inspired by the films. Even the location of the copse of trees in the lake behind the great hall.
      There are obviously a number of interiors and locations and Easter eggs from the books as well to compliment it, a real blend of the two mediums. But to suggest it’s 90% based off the books is just not right. 50% of hogwarts is the exterior and the other 50% the interior and the exterior is practically the film model so you’re at 50% movie inspiration already. Then most of the classrooms being the same design as the films bumps it up even more. It’s a good 70% film to 30% book blend as you walk around. And that’s before you get onto the room of requirement, creature designs and hogsmeade station.
      I don’t get how anyone could pretend it isn’t. Maybe you like the books more than the films and that’s 100% fine but let’s not start pretending it’s not majorly based on the films. At a real stretch you could just sit in the middle and say it’s 50/50 book/film. But 90% book? 10% film? Lol absolutely not.

    The new one looks so much more realistic but I'm surprised by how well the HBP held up. Things I wanted to see in this or the next game:
    1. RPG elements - classes, relationships, choices that matter.
    2. Night time distinctions - paintings asleep and some complaining if lumos is used, repercussions and animations for being out of common rooms if caught
    3. Animation distinctions - more fluid door animations because currently they don't match the charcter's speed when opening, distinct stair movement animation because you can't have people run full speed down a spiral staircase like they do when they run outside on flat ground, the HBP game did it well.

    In my opinion everything looks way better and more polished in Hogwarts Legacy, except for the Grand Staircase which was a tremendous letdown in Hogwarts Legacy, such an iconic location gone to waste. However, it's still amazing the amount of love and detail that was put into Half Blood Prince given the age and Hardware capabilities of the time. The atmosphere is amazing, but it's also fitting given the events going on during Half Blod Prince. That wouldn't work in Hogwarts Legacy since it was a brighter moment Hogwarts history.
