For those in California, you can become a county Social Worker with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology or Psychology, however you will need an MSW to become an LCSW. There is a shortage in California of masters prepared Social Workers, so the state is paying for people to get their MSW in exchange for working 2 years in Children & Family Services or Mental Health at the county government level.

Tashionna Goodwin oh wow that’s very interesting, but also a rare occasion. Most often the term “social worker” is protected by the profession. Learn something new every day. Thanks for letting me know!

I majored in sociology and political science for my undergraduate degree. This major provided a solid foundation for MSW study. In essence, giving me a greater understanding of the environment. Hence, in my MSW program, I concentrated on clinical behavioral health - the person in environment.

You forgot to mention Social Work was started and supported by the Christians.' (At that time they called them Charity Workers) Also Social Work, to my understanding, splitted off of Sociology. Some Sociologist kepting producing impacting research and giving it to policy makers but not demanding action. In short, some sociologist said their job is to do research and nothing else while other sociologist said no we are obligated to present our data and push for the change by shaping policy, especially with policy makers. That's where the split off happens. Since Social Work is Evidenced Based, it clearly is theory driven too adapting best practice and paving the way for societal change..
In short, there are many type of Social Workers-medical social worker, micro social worker, clinical social worker etc but its the "Macro Social Workers" who make huge impacting changes with policy makers. In fact, it was a Macro Social Worker that the president of the United States hired during the deep depression to get the country back to normal. He kept hiring economist but we kept getting buried deeper. When the Social Worker was hired he created things that we actually needed in this nation such as new roads, libraries, schools, etc and as a result, it created meaningful jobs and got the economy roaring back again.

I have chosen these fields because of my strong interest in social justice, and substantial transformative change. I have been in school for close to four years and have only just today heard of the term "Macro Social Work." You're right there is some overlap with sociology, and am now actively investigating masters programs that center on macro social work.

      Hello
You mention in your video that the founder of sociology is Auguste Comte, who was born in 1798 and died in 1857. It is very important that you control the information you share with people, as it is very well known that ibn Khaldun , who is the father of sociology who was born in 1332 and died in 1406. He also wrote al-muqadimmah, which is among the most recognized works in the world and the most widely read within sociology. Many sociologists start from al-Muqaddimah, as the building blocks of sociology are found in his book

Hi, got my BA in sociology, I was working as an ASD specialist for about 2 years but was extremely underpaid. I researched and with my title and degree ppl were making $30-50k more than me in other states so where you live plays a huge factor. Job hunting is a hit or miss, by having a sociology degree you can pretty much work in any field. I have been looking into getting my masters but I don’t really know what to get it in.

A Bachelors in Sociology can apply to a lot of fields. However, the undergrad degree is not hands-on at all and usually isn't enough if you are interested in research or policy. I've been out of school for 6 years now, and have been in the field of higher education. Specifically admissions, school retention, and at-risk work. I'm back in school now for my masters in clinical counseling. I have friends who also have their undergrad in sociology and went into completely different fields. One went the public health route and is now an epidemiologist (after getting her MA), another one is a data analyst. It really depends on what experience you get and whether or not you go to grad school, at that point your BA doesn't matter. For entry level human services job, a sociology and bsw degree are interchangeable. IMO, a masters in sociology should really only be for those on their way to a Phd. Otherwise, an MSW is more versatile especially if you decide to get your LCSW. The doors really open with that license!

I got my Bachelor's in Social Work and I hate it. I'm looking at other fields and sociology is a field I'm interested in. Social work is a toxic field. The organizations social workers end up working at operate on pure chaos and you'll always be overworked and underappreciated. Co-workers can also be exhausting as they have become disillusioned and burn out. You'll make it in social work if you're thick-skinned, I'm far too sensitive for it.

I like to help young people make career decisions too.
The difference between sociology and social work is sociology allows one to learn a basket of meaningless word salad, which one can toss around in the cafe with one's peers ( e.g. using the word 'existential' at least once per conversation is mandatory for all sociology undergraduates).
Social work is actually going out into the real world and trying one's best to put a bandaid on all things wrong with society. You'll quickly discover that you're in the great minority if you think what you are doing will make a difference and after several years of dealing with disfunction people for a salary that is 3 times less than that of your former dorm mate who studied programming, you might starting wondering what it's all for.

I have a Sociology B.A from Lehman College (1994). Sociology is useful in terms of employment AFTER graduate school. A four-year degree in this field is good enough for an entry-level position but that's about it.
I work as a security guard with two CUNY degrees and a third degree in Religious Education. College is overrated big time. I wasted my time, youth and money attending CUNY from 1986 through 1994.
Sociology did nothing for me. Basically, a college degree means to start and complete academic training. The degree itself DOES NOT impress an employer nor does it guarantee employment. My sociology degree has been collecting dust in the closet since 1994, honestly.

    • @katmaysa118

You’ve copied and pasted this several times on different YT pages. It is unfortunate you aren’t happy with your career choice but you received your second degree in the 90’s. Why not go back to college and further your education? Or if you spent of much time getting two degrees why not move to a different city or state if you can’t find work? I’m in a few college groups and many people there have landed jobs with a BA in sociology, probably not making more than 35k-40k a year but it’s a stepping stone. If you type sociology on indeed it will show a multitude of jobs in the related field. I don’t see why you’re trying to persuade people to not major in sociology just because you left your ambition in 1994.

    Look Here:
    1. Sociology B. A. (Lehman College)
    2. Liberal Arts & Sciences A. A. (City Tech)
All this academic training for nothing. I'm not knocking education and college. For example, if you like Sociology, don't stop at the four-year degree level. We have all sinned and fallen short of Gods glory sin is terrible because of sin we are separated from God but gladly here is the good news Jesus Christ came and walked this earth for everyone taught us the perfect way to live and how we should live and he died for our sins because we need a sacrifice to pay the price for our sins since our sins deserve hell if we live in sin but also more good news Jesus rose from the dead three days later we have to leave the sin behind and put it away and live new with Jesus this world is like a vapor it passes away but your eternity is forever and it is up to you what you want to do with it Jesus Christ is coming soon….
