- In an effort to keep the nest clean, one chick backed up to "do its business", but took one step too far and stumbled out of the nest. All was well in the end.

i had to laugh when I saw yet another chick make the first foray out of the nest in the same way: a poozooka taken a step too far. (Didn't that also happen last year?) What was just as endearing was the little guy's attempts to get back in the nest, at one point thwarted (inadvertently?) by a sibling's tail. And very impressed that our "fall guy" took the whole thing in stride and made it back to the nest so quickly. Thanks for capturing this first for the 2024 brood and for the great commentary--delightful!

Phew, i was trying to jump up myself watching this.
You could see the chick was thinking " now how does mum & dad make it look so easy when fetching lunch"

Amazing that here, Alcatraz, and San Jose have a brood of 4. A very good year and hopefully a successful fledge for all.

Was watching live and definitely did a little "whoop!" when the intrepid explorer (definitely not accidentally pooping too far, no sirree 😅) crawled back into the nest. Good job, little one, and let the games begin!

Fortunately he or she is big enough now. I think these kind of nests-box need a ramp.

But I must then ask... how in heck does the fastest known creature on Earth catch its prey, at such accelerated speed & distance, w/such lethal ratio of accuracy? How is head bobbing even possible at top-flight dive speeds?
I eagerly await any answers. As if I need any more reason to breathlessly admire Peregrine falcons! 😄
My understanding -- meager that it is -- is that once the falcon locates its target, it locks onto it (falcon tractor beam?), such that head bobbing is no longer necessary.
Hi, Ish--head-bobbing is more of a chick thing--I've seen adults do it when they see an intruder in their territory, but not during a "stoop" (dive). Also the success rate of prey pursuit by falcons is around 30-40 percent, from what I've read. And they don't always use the "stoop" technique--they may fly up and under a prey bird, for example. Perhaps SKH will elaborate (and correct me, as needed). By the way, I've tried the head-bobbing technique, and it didn't improve my focus one little bit--haha. But my eyes are not fixed. Annie can give the stink-eye to her chicks, but not the side-eye. Cheers, Sue

Like a heat-sinking missile, the PF seems to be able to adjust to the target's shifting movements and/or speed, not to mention wind factors. And where, as with a bolt of lightning, the prey doesn't even have time to say, "What the ****?!"

i was watching last year when one of the chicks fell out of the box the same way so i wasn't worried at all about this one and this one got into the box at the same place as the chick last year . but i loved seeing all the new feathers this one has growing out . and that one last year did the same i think when it fell out was to walk around looking at the new world outside the box .. thank you SK. for your videos !!

I was remembering the same and I think they got back I to the nest box on the same side (from memory only). Thanks for the link, SK_H. So fun to compare. Glad this little was was fine. Fortunately for this nest, it's just a short fall out! Fans would be so nervous!
