The “bad” one is vibrant and cool. I see some artists with that style and their paintings are amazing ! The right is more traditional and realistic. Both paintings are beautiful. The left one is more my style ❤️ I’d buy it.

@@BabyNoah22 yeah, whenever I hear someone say that some kind of art wasn't done "properly" I just think, so you mean they didn't do it the way YOU prefer to do it.
He said from the on set he prefer realistic painting. I've seen some beautiful styles that are non traditional. Emily Carr ring a bell. Western Canadian artist. Emily Carr school or art. Brilliant. I think developing your own style is very hard. It must be unique and developed over time. The left is not very professional. There is no definite or defined style. The artist did it loosely in 10 min. I have some stylized water color because that's the only way I cant paint with it. 😅
I actually like the bad one more. Different stokes for different folks I guess..
The "bad" one reminds me of those impressionism artworks which feature small short strokes and “broken colour”
When I was a kid, my mom cant afford to buy me brush and paint so i used finger smudging technique for years with used coffee grounds and leaves from the garden as my paint 🤗

Not sure I agree 100% with the assertions presented here. As a painter, there are some good pointers given. However, I don't think you can boil down beginner mistakes simply to hard vs soft. For instance, yes mountains in the distance will have a softer appearance...but you still want a sharpness to the mountain's outline. The same holds true for clouds. The soft/hard argument will dictate what kind of cloud your painting. Cumulus clouds will indeed have a soft appearance. On the other hand, cumulonimbus storm clouds will have a definite sharp outline to them that differentiates them from cumulus fair weather clouds. Just depends on what kind of cloud you want in your painting.
It’s not “bad” per-say. It’s just not as realistic looking. Sure it has realistic qualities but it does not look as realistic as it could. It could be a cool for a more stylized painting

Something to try. I put a bandaid on the tip of my middle finger of my right hand so when I smudge with my finger tip, the texture of the bandaid helps with the smudge effect. Just an idea to get another effect in your painting.

That is a good idea. Another one would be to get a piece of adhesive backed craft foam and stick to your finger and the soft sponginess helps smooth out your blending. But it is a pain sometimes keeping it on after a while. So the bandaid tip is for sure something i am going to try out. Thank you for sharing!

This technique certainly applies to realism landscape paintings. What I love about art is how there are many different art styles where soft edges are not required for them to be amazing and sell for millions of bucks..like Warhol who painted a soup can, Pollock who dripped and splattered paint on canvas, or Picasso who created outside the box and co-founded Cubism. That's the beauty of art...there are no mistakes. What one considers a mistake, another could consider it a whole new art style. But I can appreciate this video because it applies to your style of painting, which is one of the more technical styles and also more difficult, and you gave thorough visual instructions so it was helpful.

Wow!!!! Thank you for this. I didn't hear that before but couldn't agree more with Picasso. Manipulation & programing of society stretches to the sphere of art as well. Everything can be called art today and because of that, real artists are lost in the mist of 'all is art' propaganda.
Look up Picasso's realism. He could paint well. I think he got bored with it. He probably also thought what is the point. If someone wants a realistic portrait or whatever, just take a photo. I believe that what is painted should look different than if I could take a photo of what I am painting. I however dislike cubism.

The well-known “Confession” was invented by an Italian journalist and literary critic named Giovanni Papini who wrote two novels filled with fictional encounters between the main character, a businessman named Gog, and famous figures such as Sigmund Freud, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, and Pablo Picasso.
Neither is right or wrong, just two different painting styles. The one on the left is more impressionist while the one on the right is more American realism. Both very nice in there own way.

Also if someone is trying their best to reproduce a landscape and always end up with the left version, it’s frustrating. It’s more about intention.
True, but this video is referring to unintentional mistakes. The “bad” painting was trying to look like the “good” painting, but failed at doing so.
If you’re going for hard edges, and a flat, 2D look, then by all means go for it. But if you’re going for realism, the “bad” painting failed at it. It’s one thing to intentionally do Impressionist art, it’s another thing to attempt realism and end up with something that looks like the painting on the left.
Impressionist artists developed and perfected their styles over time... it wasn’t a mistake or a side effect of bad painting techniques.

They were able to perfect the style - oftentimes, by making mistakes, which through adaptation turned into better methods of achieving what they aimed for.

gotta admit, I like the "wrong" one better purely because the constrasts between light and dark are much more interesting to look at. But yeah, the brush strokes are better on the other one.

The first part of the comment section is depressing. There are problems with both sides, and of course it's a matter of personal preference but some of these comments are just downright thoughtless and demeaning. Please be nice, a lot of effort is put into art and some people don't have the money or time for oil paints so don't just say 'buy oil'. Thank you.
Starlight IRIS Right and some of us just don’t want to deal with the chemicals and long drying time of oils. Love that I can clean up with soap and water after acrylic painting. I don’t have a ton of space to work in either so getting proper ventilation with oils would be difficult.
This is reassuring to hear, I just bought a bunch of acrilic painting supplies with my Christmas money because I can get more colors for cheaper than oil paints and don't have to deal with harsh chemicals so it's nice to know I'm not alone
I have young children and am not comfortable using the chemicals required with oil paint. So i use acrylic and water color.
And oil seems like a tricky thing to use..as in ur safety matters with oil...i feel like id have to study that first on safety.
Diana Morales then try water mixable oils. No turpentine or thinners required. You can also use oil with very little thinners. Blending, much more opaque colours and working time all make oils easy to start out with. No racing against the clock before the paint dries or lower layers always showing through when you paint over them.

Even your “wrong” side is beautiful. Thank you for breaking down the techniques for creating a more realistic landscape. I don’t do landscapes simply because they’re not realistic looking. I also have trouble getting my highlights, say in tree leaves, to pop. They always look dull.

But my trees and clouds kept coming out like the left (but worse!) when I wanted right and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong. Tbh, I love both, I am currently in the LEFT side since im not yet into painting, but seriously the right is my objective, realism is a great art, yet i cant use it as my original style since I want to express more, So its nice to know these tips you gave me :) If i have artworks for sceneries i could simply do what you do!

I stumbled onto your videos for the first time and this is the exact advice I needed. I've been struggling with painting realism in acrylic and blending hard edges. My painting always looked somewhat cartoonish, even though the equivalent pencil sketches looked so much better. Your tips hit the problems right on and I look forward to checking out more videos, especially acrylic.
Also, I love your enthusiasm, it's not overly done and accurately resonates with the joy I feel when parts of my painting come out right. After all, most people paint because it satisfies them, even though as a beginner it's hard sometimes because of technique.

Finger smudging is a technique I use quite often . Lol.
When using cadmium based paints you should try to use a dry brush or q-tips to blend so as to limit exposure.

This reminds me of those painting classes everybody takes while drinking wine with their friends.. The one on the right would be the teacher's painting everyone tries to replicate and the one on the left would be the one somebody proudly displays while holding up their glass of wine in a Facebook post.

Honestly, I love both paintings as each have an element of good values. I think you should use the techniques on the right if you're going for that richer, more oil painting aesthetic (or realism). The left side looks cool if you're purposely going for a bold, almost cartoon like picture depending on your art style. So, there is no wrong or bad way, just preference lol.

i see the value in both ways you did it. the left side looks like a highly stylized and well done illustration for a kids book or a book in general, and the right side looks amazing and realistic. they both are amazing really.

Sure, the painting on the left has hard edges almost everywhere, but it also has more structure. I feel like the most aesthetically sophisticated approach would be a combination of the two.

I also am a fan of the hard, abstract look. I do up close paintings of cherry blossoms with that look. But I want to paint a semi realistic face so I'm trying to explore more realistic techniques

Nah. The right looks more realistic.
The left is totally 'amateur' - all the world's great landscape painters had soft edges and some hard edges [ few]. Wow I can't believe you have such poor understanding of the landscape - go out and look - there are no hard edges in nature. If you are doing poster work hard edges work, but it's not for this kind of painting. The stronger the chiascuro [light and dark] the more you can add some harder edges.

I think this tips are useful not only if you're painting with acrylic paint.
balancing soft, lost and hard edges is applicable pretty much to any form of painting. You could apply this event if you are digital artist 🤷♂️

When you're so good in painting that you can't draw a bad painting.
I would not call them 'good' or 'bad'. It is just two different ways of painting - and personally I much prefer the 'bad' one :-)

Thanks for sharing these tips. I have a couple of landscape paintings and couldn't work out what was "off" about them. Comparing certain painting of mine I realized the ones I liked had the"softer" background. It all makes sense.
I will certainly pay more attention and put more effort into softening, adding finer layers and just having more fun with colour blending.
