I remember getting my vita day one. I’ve still got it and it’s still working. A great video as always. Sony tried to many features on the vita. It may not have been a financial success for Sony but the community is keeping it going.

It's ultimately Sony's fault. They made a worthy successor to the PSP and just let it die. Thank goodness for the homebrew community tho. They picked up the slack and allowed the Vita to really shine, and because of that, I do not regret choosing a Vita over a 3DS.

Firstly, let me say how much I'm appreciating your videos, 2 Old 4 Gaming.
I've been a latecomer to the Vita, and I really wish I'd picked up many more physical games back when I had the chance.
Anyway, when the Vita launched in Europe, back in 2012, I was studying. I was - and still am - a huge PSP fan, so I was super-excited for the Vita when it was first announced. But at launch, the cost of the system and the Memory Cards put me off. I also remember being greatly disappointed that Namco put out such a dismal Ridge Racer game when Ridge Racer (PSP) and Ridge Racer 7 were so phenomenal. Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Wipeout 2048 seemed very cool, but nothing else was grabbing me. I had stacks of PS3 and 360 games, and found myself saying: "Vita is gonna have to wait".
As time went by, things improved. Sony's Cross-Buy and Cross-Play offerings were fantastic. I really didn't appreciate just how good it was until very recently (partly because I've also been late to PS4!). The selection of indie games, from hits like Hotline Miami and Don't Starve, to titles like Grim Fandango and Oddworld, really are terrific to have. PlayStation TV, too, was such a missed opportunity.
I agree with lot of your points.
For me, the system simply didn't need the back touch. And it absolutely should have come with sizeable internal storage - they should have offered different internal storages sizes instead of a Wi-Fi or 3G model. And Sony definitely needed to make more noise about its capabilities and exclusives.
Smartphones, Nintendo's strong selection of games and exclusives, overly complex design, and cost all played a part in the Vita's misfortunes. It feels even more ironic beside the success of the PS4. If Sony actually invested more effort in persevering their legacy systems and games, and made it easier for players to have access to them (read: actually made more PSP, PS1 and PS2 games available digitally worldwide, and upgraded their legacy stores instead of shutting them down), and shouted loudly and often about that fact, Vita may have had more of a fighting chance.

    • @2old4gaming
      @2old4gaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Great points man. You’re right about the 3G being unnecessary. They were so focused on trying to compete with smartphones that they didn’t realise it’s not something people would even use. I bought the 3G vita and probably used the data in it once just to upload some results for MotorStorm RC.
I totally agree about Sony advertising and communicating about the Vita.

  • @Fede4Cod

Having retrocompatibility also helped 3DS a lot.
Vita not only wasn’t compatibile with physical psp games, but some of the best psp games weren’t even buyable digitally on the store.

    @nategreatgames78 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

My opinion of why Vita didn’t realize its full potential
    1. Timing. I can’t really say there would have been a perfect time without saying there wasn’t, but I’m of the mind that If the Vita would have released later & the Switch would have released earlier Vita may have had a better go. The Smart phone tablet thing was real and I think Sony was definitely aware of that and counting on physical controls and higher quality experiences being their advantage against that kind of competition, which is why they also focused on a very social & connected device to rival them. But I think what really hurt the Vita from timing wise was it came out after ps4 and it came out way before switch, with the odd thing being if it wasn’t for Vita Ps4 probably wouldn’t have had a successful of a launch and their probably would be no switch having not learned from the vita mistakes which brings me to the next point
2 Focus. The problem with Vita at its launch is a tale of 2 Sonys and a time of transition. You had the “old sony” who was out of touch with its consumer and botched the launch of ps3 and then spent most of that console generation playing catch up, but at some point things switched and there was this “new sony” that emerged, new leadership more in tune with what was going on that helped Sony overtake Microsoft at the end. I think Vita resulted as an ultimate expression of what new sony wanted to be about, but you had old sony still present in the ranks and there was a lot of difference of opinions and infighting about what they wanted Vita to be. The network guys wanted it to be digital only, another side wanted to keep that relationship with the brick and mortar. One side wanted to embrace competing against smart phones, the other wanted to focus on competing with Nintendo, and on and on. Saw a former sony employee said PS tV was completely an old sony decision and it should have never been released.I think from Vita onward New Sony took the lead and carried that energy over to the vision and launch of PS4 which was “for the players”. When you look at what Nintendo did with switch, they took great steps to get there console division and portable division on the same page before they even came up with the Switch prototype
And I think the final straw for Vita was
    3. Hackers. Sony was scarred by the big network hack. It lead to the proprietary memory decision, which most people say is a big reason Vita failed. They saw what happened once PSP was hacked and games were pirated and they wanted to avoid that at all cost. Part of Vita’s DNA was rooted in that old sony associated with ps3, and once PS4 blew up it took a backseat in priority. Sony didn’t want to have to worry about it, but once it was successfully hacked it went to them not wanting to have anything to do with it and that’s was pretty much the end of support for the Vita from Sony themselves. It’s only saving grace was the fact “new sony” built great relations with the Indie scene and they pretty much gave it to them and said she’s your baby now.

The memory card hurt them with the core gamer audience.
The reason they added the back touch pad and the two cameras was to appeal to the casuals and compete with the mobile market. Unfortunatly they realese it during the 2012 american election and had to pay premium for advertisement. Sony was never going to win agaisnt mobile games. Had they released it a year later for better advertisement, cellphones and the Nintendo 3DS would have a bigger stronghold on the market.
Sony should have focused on the core gamers. The xbox series s/x open homebrew market for only $20 is really helping them. Had sony been open to homebrew and regular micro sd card thing may have been completly different. They were selling to a lost.
Removing the unecesary functions and adding more buttons as well as internal storage may have seen as bad ideas back then. It is only with hindsight that we can make these assesments.

Not going to agree with launching a year later, that was the PS4s launch period.
The strategy at launch wasn't too bad, they tried to do the gotcha price moment they did against the Saturn back in the 90s, by matching Nintendo's entry price for the 3DS. They just stumbled with a few details:
-the hidden cost of the memory cards, the smaller capacity cards weren't going to cut it, the ones you could deal with were the 16GB and 32GB cards, and that could tack on $40-$80+ to the price. You weren't looking at $250 USD, it was now into the $300+ before adding the games. At that price you could get a 360 or PS3 which had established game libraries.
-they made an expensive 3G model that was locked to one data provider in the U.S., and was not fast enough to actually to play games online, it only served to download things and maybe browse (I remember seeing launch 3G bundles in stores a full year after).
They also didn't count on Nintendo reacting to Sony's price announcement, they dropped the price, and gave people a collection of titles as good will (even reimbursing people that bought those titles on their own).

  • @NL0x420
    @NL0x420 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Sony should have tried to get their Vita hardware any way possible into people’s homes including through rebates or coupons with PlayStation 3 and 4 along with giving a free extra title if either or both were purchased… Sometimes you need to lose money to make money if you are facing a tough market. Also agree a bare-bones PS Vita version of hardware should have been available as the lifecycle continued similar to the wedge 2DS

I remember them saying that the gamecards would hold saved data, then seeing all of the disappointment when big games would not allow you to save without one... or even start them. Not being able to just buy the console and some games without the need for a memory card really seemed to upset people at first. I tried really hard to sell these when I worked at toys r us, even going so far as carrying mine with me to demo... and the entry price always turned them to get a 3ds or tablet instead.
edit: Also their marketing was basically non existent or just bad

Thanks for this. It's weird that as time goes on, a lot of the newer vita gamers seem to have the perception that the Vita primarily failed due to the memory cards, when in actuality it was a combination of a lot of things (although the memory card prices didn't help)
New PSP gamers are also having the same misunderstandings about that handheld as well (but in terms of understanding its successes and failures) Now its considered a runaway success, even though it had massive piracy, a dismal attach rate and somewhat lackluster support for the last half of its life (outside Japan)

i... don't think it failed... in a sense...
before, the gba was the best hand held console there is... during its time...
and then they made a newer handheld several years after, the DS and then later, the 3ds.
the psp, the vita, the switch.
i dont think they 'failed'... more like, someone found a way to make a better handheld console.
i hear there's the steam deck and the ps vita 2 coming, ive also heard rumors about a new nintendo console as well, but its still unclear...
my guess is, people will just develop more and more handheld consoles and competing on whose console is better.
if game devs cant make new games just as fast, im predicting remakes of old famous games, lots of 'em.

Imagine an alternate reality where the Vita was a huge success…..I guess Japan knows what’s up haha. Amazing insight as always! My opinion may be biased, but I don’t know how people could choose a 3DS over the Vita. Maybe I’d understand if I was in love with Mario, Zelda, monster hunter, etc. So many reasons why the Vita failed. As much as I hate advertising, promoting these products back in the day would’ve helped a lot. Seeing or hearing about a product will eventually make you think about it at one point or another. Sony with the lack of backing their product up like they should’ve, pirates/moochers didn’t help by not purchasing games and supporting developers. Thank you for this!

I agreed with your points maybe not the rankings. I think cellphones and piracy had some effect but if people are paying money for the switch, Chinese emulators, and steam deck’s we know that people still want portable gaming. That major corporations want instant sales/gratification instead of learning from their mistakes and having patience. The Xperia Play and PlayStation tv were part of a bigger problem. They could have been the red magic before the red magic phone or even having cloud games. Fixing the PlayStation tv instead of white listing games despite being probably 3 years to late to market.

They should have doubled-down on God of War as launch title since it's a more well-known IP. Not saying Uncharted is not good, but if they capped the launch with GoW, that would have been a great deal of public exposure.
I mean, look at the Switch's launch titles, they are known Nintendo IP's: Mario and Zelda. That gained public attention. More good games came out and even the other WiiU ports are being given new life seeing a lot of gamers missed out on them.

Vita had a camera because it was a portable device compared to the Switch which is a home console that can be use as a portable so the camera isn't needed. The 3ds had a camera and imo the vita did utilize the camera better for the few games and apps that used it.

For me, I would say memory cards. I managed to get the 32 gb before they skyrocketed in price. The 64 gb ones tend to fail, which was why they never released it in the West. I'll definitely be getting a PS3 to back up my digital PSN collection just in case.
The other main reason would be the selection of games. The PSP had more racing games than the PS Vita does. I wish we had gotten Burnout, Midnight Club, MX vs ATV, Monster Jam, Gran Turismo, etc.
We could have gotten Zone of the Enders HD and Armored Core HD collections. I could see Twisted Metal Black being ported.
I got a paper due at the end of the week, but I'm definitely getting on for Freedom Wars and Soul Sacrifice Delta over the weekend. It's a shame Sony is killing off their multiplayer. I got them since they may get delisted eventually.

...the DSi/3DS/2DS had cameras too. Both Systems used for AR mini-games. So at the time, "cameras" were common thing. AR was a fad that made money and they wanted more possibilities. Eye of Judgement comes to mind regarding AR titles.
You're spot on regarding storage. I wish they would of crammed in 16GB of storage for save states, dlc, updates, etc. Then if you wanted, you could expand your storage to fit your need.
Speaking of storage, when they switched to the PS Vita 2000 with 1GB of storage for save files, when you installed a memory card, you lost functionality of the internal storage. That really irked me...
Lastly, I wish they kept the PSP and PSP Go docking ability.

If it had a whole range of apps besides games. Like communication apps that made use of the camera’s next to some streaming apps. It would have been awesome. I miss those on my Nintendo Switch. The Vita would have been a great multimedia platform. It just wanted to much for the time it came out. If Sony would have had access to the powerful chips of the present day they would have kicked … . Imagine it would have had even a calling function. How about imagining if Sony had made their own Switch before Nintendo.
They had all of the ingredients years before:
-The PSP GO had an optional cradle that allowed you to both charge the portable and play on the TV
      - The GO also had internal storage (16GB) and a memory card slot to add more (Sony's Memory Stick duo)
-The GO could use PS3 controllers to play on TV
-Sony released its NAV controller that worked with their Move controllers, the Nav controller can also be paired to the GO and has half the buttons of a PS3 Dualshock (including analog thumbsticks with L3 function) two of them would approximate Nintendo's Switch controllers in functionality (they'd have to add rumble and six axis tech).

Only has 3 years and i barely touched the vita due to the lack of time... now on weekend that i have to play for a while, the format memory card message appears out of nowhere. And it was the micro sd failure, i tested it with chkdsk on the pc and all seem is dead for good. Now i need to use a recovery program to save all the data to another micro sd and now i don't trust on any 512GB and up since they have the nasty habit to fail at the worst moment😖.

Micro SD cards are cheaper. I actually bought 2 Micro SD cards, 64GB for my android phone and 128GB for the Switch, didn't even cost me $30 for both. Think I only got them for 20ish. If you buy on sale, they're even cheaper. PS vita memory is so expensive. If even stingy Nintendo opted for a universal standard, then Sony had always been in the wrong.

Reason Nr. 1) The PSP was abandoned (In Europe) less than Six Months after it landed. When UMD Movies were all the rage, and the 4 Games that launched with the System costed as much as a PS3, or X360 Disc.
The last nail landed after the original release copy of GTA3:LCS landed, and gave those the opportunity to downgrade their PSPs to become more useful at playing games. Albeitly GBA ROMs but, a Game, is a Game. At the time PSP had none.

I was hoping that the launch of PsVita would come with an Exclusive God Of War. Not that Uncharted is good, but I think it would get a lot more public attention. I think Sony should have been late in making PsVita such a powerful machine that it would be able to run the entire Ps2 library without any problems. Adding Exclusive Games, Ps2, PsP and Ps1 Library, plus Ps3 Games Ports! Wow! Then Sony would be right to make money! The market for handheld devices is tougher than desktop consoles. To get into this business, you need to come up with everything right from the start. If people from the First World had any idea of the price of Vita memory cards in Developing Countries, they would buy the referrals smiling in their own land! Here in Brazil it is five times the value there! I don't think Memory cards is one of the reasons PsVita didn't work (although I respect everyone's opinions); however, the real reasons Sony didn't save the Vita, and didn't invest in the other super-successful franchises for it, maybe we'll never know. To this day I'm in awe of the PsVita, what an amazing machine, what a top design!

The PS4. As well as the PS4 did with its launch, it did suffer initially from a lack of first party titles. Sure you were still playing the CoDs, Battlefields, and Assassin's Creed games that came out, but Sony's 1st party franchises were missing. They were frankly lucky that MS botched their launch; Xbox had several launch window exclusives, and if they had made Titanfall a true new gen exclusive they would have done better than they did.
Sony decided to task ALL of its first party studios to make PS4 games ASAP. This meant the Vita had to go without. Coincided with Sony saying that 3rd parties would be its future...
The PS4 (again). The PS4 sold like gangbusters for several years straight, moving more than 15 million units each year. Sony could have helped the Vita by selling bundles with the PS4. I am not saying that they would magically sell 15 million Vitas each of those years, but they would have moved more units than they actually did. The Vita actually felt really good to play with, more people just needed to have extended sessions with it.
Lack of media apps. The PS3 and eventually the PS4 became pretty robust media centers, hosting lots of different media apps. In the U.S. the Vita had a number apps available to it too. This wasn't the case in every market, and even less so on the PSTV. The PSTV was the perfect size and price to compete with the Firesticks, Chromecasts and Rokus that were popular back then, plus it played video games. Sony didn't let many media/streaming apps run on the little device.

Losing Gravity Rush 2 and other games in development didn't help.
Not having full compatibility with the PS3 as once advertised. The second screen function was badly underutilised.
The lack of first party or strong third party titles from JP studios (Final Fantasy etc). World of FF & DQB came far too late to change anything.

my opinion on what the ps vita 2 could do better:
    1. add L2/R2 L3/R3 buttons and no back touchscreen.
    2. posistion left and right analog stick MUCH lower away from directional and command buttons so that fingers won't be hitting the analog sticks when using them and vice versa.
    3. micro sd card slot that you can use whatever micro sd card you want expandable up to at least 256 gigabytes.
    4. increased ram and internal memory.
    5. port ALL ps1, ps2, ps3, ps4, psp and ps vita games and if you already own them in the ps4 store than it doesn't have to be repurchased.
    6. for all games of all platforms, set up a server that allows and automatically searches for people to search online via wifi to play multiplayer. adhoc is always an option for nearby.
    7. improved game volume.
    8. custom touchscreen buttons for older console games now able to be set as multiple buttons simultaneously and not just an individual button (that was useless imo) for commands like pressing square and circle together etc.
    9. front facing camera with flash.

Sure people play games on phones but as a Gamer I still struggle to find real AAA games on Android or IOS. (the best is older 3Agames). Games like MarioKart 8, Odyssey, and BOTW is miles ahead of any game on the Iphone. Phones have som realy good looking games but nothing High quality. If you look at the Nintendo games on IOS/android like MK or Super mario run, the games are striped down version made to make games go out and buy the real games. Vita’s launch had amazing titles actually showing visuals and depth that could match the console experience. It came closer to the PS3 than the PSP did to the PS2.
But unlike the PSP, which went on to have many premium grade titles released in the numerous coming years (the games looked bigger and better as time progressed and more triple a content was released), the Vita was left to languish largely with indie-grade titles that could run on a PSP or various smart phones. Even certain ports were unbelievably mediocre. Hell, Resident Evil Revelations 2 looks worse on the Vita than RE Revelations 1 does on the 3DS. In that regard, the Vita doesn’t have that many games and the criticisms about it lacking content of substance is absolutely valid. When it comes to the overall library of premium grade titles that make use of a given system’s power, compared to the Vita, all the big brand handhelds of the last two decades have had far larger offerings, from the PSP, to the NDS and the 3DS, and now, of course, the Switch.
Just imagine what more they could’ve gotten out of this system (the way they did with the PSP) given that just in its first couple of years, it already had games that looked like Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Gravity Rush and Killzone Mercenary. It was abandoned before it even got into the prime of its lifecycle. An absolute shame that this it left to languish as a glorified remote play accessory to the PS4.

    • @franticfranz22
      @franticfranz22 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sure, but it ain't successful. What's the point of those features? Sony made design mistakes, like what the video said. It tried to innovate too much that it didn't focus on what mattered.
Switch has no camera or AR? Sure, at least it has onboard storage and uses a universal format which is really cheap. A 512GB Micro SD is so cheap. The Switch is pretty simple, but why is it still selling?

    • @FatalistDC

@@franticfranz22 What I mean is that the cameras are not a reason that has harmed the PS Vita. It is a feature that is there and there are games that take advantage of it. Nintendo chose not to put cameras on the Switch and that's it. The skyrocketing price of proprietary PS Vita memory cards is surely the main factor hurting the PS Vita, lack of internal storage and Sony itself ditching its support for the console with new releases.

An interesting fact is that the PS Vita was rushed out because the PSP encryption keys for PSN download games were part of what was obtained inside the PS3 firmware after the failoverflow thing in late 2010. Those keys later made it possible to play pirated content without even hacking the PSP and things like emulators being able to decrypt and run PSP software autonomously. While they already had the PS Vita in a very late state of development at that point, the pressure to release the PS Vita "ASAP" might have caused SONY to have no time to plan properly.

I think you nailed pretty much all of the big reasons the Vita failed. Nice video. I think another thing was bad messaging from Sony about remote play and cross-play. Most people didn't understand how it all worked from the ads they showed. For the games that did have cross-play functionality, it wasn't made clear that you basically had to buy the game twice and all you were doing was using the same save file. Heck, to this day, many Vita owners barely even know there is PS4 remote play! And yeah... that also goes hand-in-hand with the missing L2/R2 buttons.

  • @nepetaclose1338
    @nepetaclose1338 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I feel like #1 is kind of a mute point, they wouldn't have considered remote play even at all in the initial model since beyond what, 5? Ps3 games it wasn't really a thing, and even if they did add those buttons, it'd ruin how ergonomic the system feels, maybe it'd sell a *little* better, but anyone that doesn't use remoteplay would be left with a worse system experiance since that would just be added weight and a worse design. The backpad doesn't even add a lot of bulk to the system, and the cameras were super useful back in the day as someone who was too young for a phone. I got more use out of those than i ever would have remote play buttons.
