  • Four Wheel Campers is excited to share a video tour of our newest Four Wheel pop-up camper, what we like to call Project M. This Four Wheel Campers topper is different from what we have offered in the past.
Our other Four Wheel Campers models have been slide-in truck campers where the tailgate is removed, and the camper is slid into the bed of the truck. The Project M camper is a topper, which goes on top of the bed rails and is clamped or bolted down. The tailgate stays on and has a separate hatch.
The Project M truck topper is available in six different colors, as well as black diamond plate siding if you desire a more industrial custom camper shell look.
While the Project M topper in the video is shown on a full-size half-ton Chevy 1500, Project M toppers are available in several different sizes to accommodate truck beds, including:
    5 Foot
    5.5 Foot
    6 Foot
    6.5 Foot
    8 Foot
    Project M Topper Camper Features
The Project M camper features a standard window on the driver side, which also serves as an emergency escape hatch. The camper has outside GearTracs. You can get these on one side or both sides of the camper to attach Rotopax, Maxtrax, axes, shovels, board racks, etc.
There are six roof latches-two on each side of the camper and two in the front. There also are roof latches and jack brackets on each corner of the camper.
On the passenger side, you have a few options available. You can get a large or small window, a large or small utility hatch, or a solid side with no window.
On the rear exterior, flood lights are available as an option. The roof is a one-piece aluminum skin that you can get with vents, power fan, GearTracs, camper sport racks, and solar panel options.
Inside the Project M topper camper, you can get a power vent, an extra vent, and LED lights as options. If you choose the Pre-Wire for Power option, it includes four interior LED lights and pre-wiring for vent fans, solar, and battery connection.
In the soft pop-up portion of the camper, there are four built-in windows with privacy flaps secured into place with Velcro. A clear flap screen is behind that and is also secured with Velcro. Finally, there is a permanently built-in screen.
The cabover bed always comes with the topper. You can choose if you want our mattress or if you want to supply your own. If you order our mattress, you will have mattress options. To make the cabover bed into a full-size bed, simply pull the slider until it drops down and locks into place.
In the bottom front of the Project M topper is a large window that is standard for visibility and to help you see out the back of the camper when driving. Two interior shelves sit on the bed rails of the truck and are either bolted or clamped down.
Interior tracks are available as an option for hanging or tying down equipment. All Project M toppers include a fire extinguisher and smoke detector on the ceiling.
Another optional feature is the Thermal Pack. This is a cold-weather blanket that is attached to the Velcro strip along the tops of the soft fabric part of the pop-up part of the camper. The camper roof and all of the camper walls are foam insulated.
Additionally, several power solutions are available to supply power to the camper, which can also be connected to your truck, solar panel and battery setup, or 120V electrical outlet for recharging.
Setting Up the Project M Topper
Step 1: Start by releasing all six roof latches by going around the top of the pop-up camper. If your truck is lifted, you may need a step stool to reach the latches.
Step 2: Grab the two latches on the camper door, open it up, and drop the tailgate.
Step 3: Once you are inside the camper, it is a very simple process to lift the roof up. Gas struts are helping you from the outside while you push up on the roof. Simply push up on the back until it locks into place, then push up on the front until it locks into place.
Step 4: Remove the bungee cords from the soft sides. Store these someplace secure, as you will need to reattach them before bringing the top down.

This is one of the best designs out there, period. The added interior space and bed-width created from the sides sticking out beyond the bed rails, plus the 13” shelf that is created on the sides, put this canopy at the front of the pack for me. I know it’s not in the typical FWC style, but if y’all could make this in a clamshell design with a bed platform that pivots up like some of the competition out there, with the ability to keep the bedding in place when it’s all closed up, the Project M would be PERFECT. Thanks for the thorough walk-around.

For me (again for me) when comparing the various options that I want, paired with living in a very wet PNW and dusty summer roads, I'm saving up for the shell model. This model would be a bit too risky in terms of weather proofing, for me, around wear it sits on the truck bed.
