  • Building the Lance Truck Camper & Pickup Out for Our Expedition North | Go North Ep 2
In this episode we follow the build of our home on wheels for the trip north this summer. We are taking a Ford F350 Dually Truck and pairing it with a Lance 1172 Truck Camper. We had the opportunity to follow the build of the 1172 camper we are taking through Lance's manufacturing facility. Once complete, the camper received a few more modifications including a RV Water Filter Store system (bit.ly/RVWaterF...) installed as well as a Pepwave router and data plan setup for connectivity (from MobileMustHave/LivinLite.net www.mobilemust.... The last major modifications made to the RV was a retrofit of a Truma VarioHeat furnace and AquaGo water heater that we are going to be testing out this summer. This episode also showcases the modifications we made to the truck to be able to carry the camper including Hellwig sway bars and airbags.

I lived in Prince George in the 70’s and every summer there were many people “doing the Alaska Highway”...cars & trucks piled high with spare wheels & large jerrycans (for gas).
Last summer my sister & brothers-in-law drove up to Tuktoyatuk on the new highway. Another sister & BIL often use the Cassier highway, they’re naturalists & often work in the bush. I’ve only been on a portion of the Alaska Highway (gravel & hairpin turns) from Dawson Creek-back in the early 70’s! Need to get up there as an adult! Our father was in the RCAF & did something with the Alaska Highway.
Enjoy my country! The scenery is amazing...

Probably the best truck camper out there. Excellent quality. We had one, bought it in 1997 Model 945 and sold it in 2017. It still looked new. Great job and good luck. We'll be following.

As expected, another AWESOME episode! Thanks for taking us on the Lance factory tour and sharing the build. We haven't visited their factory (yet) but you gave us a great look into how they build them. Good job on all the installs guys, and excellent video all round. It's so fun to be following your journey from the beginning. Kudos to Lance and all of your sponsors for setting you up well for your adventures and showing us all what is possible! You are going to be well connected and very comfortable all the way to the Arctic Circle. Can't wait for the next episode! Go Mortons!

Hello from Canada. It must be pretty fun to have this done the way you want it. Good for you to make the arrangement with Lance and be able to do this. Most of us would never be able to afford all that new stuff straight out. I am not much of a promoter so my hat is off to you to for making this happen.
Aside from that, what is keen for me is the whole notion of you vehicle being utterly stand alone allowing you to go to some very remote places. I think truck campers are cozy and there is an appeal to them for me as well. However, I will interesting to see how you two enjoy it compared to all the room you have in the 5th wheel. Interesting experiment. Travel safe! Henri

What a win-win for Lance & The Mortons. Two extremely skilled RV Masters on an Alaskan adventure for all to take part in. Congrats on Lance and all your other wise sponsors seizing the opportunity to send a fit, good looking, animated, qualified electrical engineer who just happens to have along a fit, good looking, animated, qualified project manager engineer wife as his equal partner. You guys are a team like few other. Combine that with your cinematic film and editing skills and this is going to be better than Netflixs. I just canceled it.

Nice choice. We bought the 1172 last year. After having nearly every style camper through the years....it is our favorite by far. We put nearly 20,000 miles on last year. We sometimes flat tow our Rubicon behind it. You are on your way to a lot of fun! Enjoy!!

Thank you for the build video. I live in AK and have made the trip several times with a truck camper. Not a fan but that’s just me. Too much weight, too high. Especially on bumpy roads. The camper sort of self destructed. But, it wasn’t new and I’m sure there have been improvements in the last 20 years.

It was very cool see Lance Camper collaborating with Truma, as well as yourselves, providing full transparency to ensure a great outcome.

I will be closely following your travels and hope to share with you some of the improvements we've made. We have similar equipment as you both in size and add ons. A couple of things I wish the 1172 had was a cassette toilet and a compressor refer. Reefer easier than the cassette. Big mods there. Stephanie and I will be looking forward to your adventures in the great NW. I've mad the trip twice: in 2004 in a 2001 Dodge 3500 Dually and a 2002 Lance 1161 and in 2013 on a 2012 Harley FLHTK Electroglide Ultra Classic Ltd with my retired Navy Bud Jon!. Ooops, I forgot one thing. The metal tape on the roof around the antenna. Are you trying to force a Marconi dipole antenna with this? I am thinking not because the wavelengths of your cells phones and wifi would be too short for that to help. So, instead does the roof absorb the signal and so you are reducing that? What about a parabolic dish if you really want to bring in the signal? Travel safe, Henri

Great set up, I am recently retired and am on the fence btn a truck camper set up like yours; vs a Sprinter van conversion. Surprised how heavy these are, as I didn't expect I needed to buy a 350, and also, how expensive these campers are. Finally, I still don't understand why they haven't changed the style since the 70's. Why can't rv manufacturers see what they are doing over in europe and update their designs accordingly.

Nice Job. AGAIN! looks like another production quality video! Love your truck upgrade choices and your custom graphics look Phantastic! Sorry Truma and Lance didn't connect with each other prior to the install of the heaters. that would have made the install a bit easier and cleaner. I'm also questioning the location of that thermostat sitting right next to the oven. I'm suspecting colder temps inside when your baking. But then again- maybe that will balance out quite nicely! Hey guys! Great show. Glad you are able to live your dream, and share with all of us!
If you are able, I'd love to see a bit more detail on the gear you are using to shoot your Go North series, as well as on the savings/efficiencies of your batteries, heater and hot water technologies...how do they compare with the standard kit that comes with most campers, in propane and electricity consumption.
I'd also like to know more about your, under the sink, water filter. How do you use this to fill your tank from a river or creek?
Let your sponsors know that some of us are watching closely and want to buy what you use. :)
    Thanks,
    Thane.
P.S. If you have spare time in South Central Alaska and want to eat moose or salmon, let me know. :)

I been thinking to build something as such from few years for use to travel all over. Roughly, how much is the estimate for the camper as such built and the truck?
Also, why you didn’t go for cummin diesel truck?

Why did you pick the Ford F-350 truck and Lance two-side sliders over other products?
    Cost?
    Advantages?
    Disadvantages?

We partnered with Lance for this adventure and this was the camper and truck combination that was on loan to us from them. However, we do share our thoughts about the overall setup in this article: www.mortonsonthemove.com/tour-the-2020-lance-1172-truck-camper-the-go-north-expedition-vehicle/

Yes, but, I expect they might bring a small one. Alaska can be pretty grey and you may not be able to get enough of the solar

We also have a F-350 and a Lance camper. I’m just curious why you added the heavy duty hitch. Are you towing a heavy trailer?

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Mainly for the ability to have the stinger hitch and the built in tiedowns for the camper.

All the editing in this was just insane. 2000 clips?

    • @MortonsontheMove
      @MortonsontheMove  5 ปีที่แล้ว

We have been averaging a few thousand clips and 200-500GB of footage to work with for each episode... It is a challenge while traveling for sure.

So, with approx 1300 lbs of available cargo, and you haven’t loaded batteries, solar, food, water and bodies yet. It looks like you will be maxing out your payload, granted that the up grades help, bottom line the frame of the truck and other working parts are only meant to handle 5500 lbs. Have fun on your travels, I’ll be following along.

Why the Ford platform ? Any Specific reason ? Is that what you already had, or did you purchase the truck for this journey ?

This is Lance's vehicle and thats what they use. I personally don't have a preference.
