The battle of Hel Fenn took place in the Year 2142 and was the final battle of the Third Vampire War, during which Mannfred’s dread legions of undead terrorized the Empire bringing death and destruction in equal measure.

I'm wondering- is End Times something you have any interesst in doing? Like, I'd love to see you make a video on Harkon / the Vampire Coast, but outside the End Times theres very little on actual battles or campaigns of theirs. But the book Nagash features a really detailed description of Harkon's invasion of Nehekara and his team-up with Mannfred there - which I feel could be a background for an awesome video.

Ah Mannfred. Played hide and seek with the Empire for a few years, running from every possible engagement and then finally in springs his trap! Where he is completely out thought and fought and then finally cut down by a simple human.

That strategy the empire used to win sounds an awful lot like the strategy Carthage used against Rome in the battle of Cannae 🧐

Very impressive video. Despite already knowing this part of the lore, I really enjoyed listening to you explain it. The different shots from the battle, the map, the quote and other edits were very well done and added a lot to it. I had never read that quote about the forlorn hope, but reading it gave me goosebumps. Hope you can add more of these quotes in your future videos :)

The tactics used in Hel fenn is exactly the tactics Hannibal used in the battle of Cannae against the romans
Not surprising, a lot of Warhammer lore takes elements from real history. Vampires going around empire before a big battle? Sounds like Hannibal. Obviously they mixed some elements in.
That's great. Like Hannibal, Mannfred lost more than gained trying to conquer the empire.

@@DragonSlayerCommentariesHQ I disagreed. Hannibal lost partly due to the fact that his government back home at Carthage refused to fund his invasion of Roman soil.
Moreover, Hannibal fought at more disadvantageous positions compared to Manfred with fewer armies and logistics.
Remember, Hannibal rely on his wits and intelligence to win every battle, unlike Manfred, a fictional character who had to rely on necromancer magic to win every battle.
If not for the internal squabling inside the Carthagian court, Hannibal would have crushed the Romans and invade Rome already.

I only have one nitpick. The name Carstein is from the Warhammer world's equivalent of German. Whenever the letters e and i appear in succession its pronunciation is similar to the English word eye. It's not pronounced ee, as is the case with Jewish/German or Anglicized German names. So the name Carstein is not pronounced as Carsteen, but as Carsteyen.
No, as a German I can tell you that it is pronounced as followed: imagine saying stone with an I , so stine. So you pronounce it carstein, while the s in stein is pronounced like the sh in sharing. In German this would be pronounced „karstein“. No offense lol

Warhammer has never been subtle with its historival inspirations
Historical tactics aside, this tactic actually works a treat on Undead in tabletop Warhammer. If you outflank them and attack Undead in the rear, they start dying quicker because of combat resolution (basically an equation of how many wounds inflicted on the unit and an addition point due to certain tactical factors e.g. outnumbered, attack in the rear/side, standards visible, magic , etc). The Undead - unlike other armies - by every point of combat resolution you beat them by makes them take extra unpreventable casualties which is important because they have a nasty habit of getting up. Also, since Undead have psychological benefits on the tabletop, you need to make sure you don't lose the combat so seizing any opportunity to make the resolution higher is important.
Dwarfs, my favourite army, once killed an elite unit of Black Knights simply by performing said tactic. The Black Knights wanted to wipe out what seemed to be a small unit of Dwarf Slayers (2 ranks of 5) on a charge and crash right through but I had two units of Dwarf infantry (4 ranks of 5) on the flanks that I slowly turned for a charge but at an oblique to ensure that if the Knights charges the Dwarf Unit they would have to expose themselves to a charge in the flank. Going for the Slayers, he killed almost 1 rank BUT he realised a mistake: Slayers don't lose combat (Dwarf tenacity) so the knights were forced to kill every single one thus giving me enough time to move the two flanking units to crash into his flanks and envelope him. I have to admit, the Knights could have fought their way due to heavy amour protection and some magic items that allowed them to "recover" a knight in a while but they were still losing 1 knight extra for every one I killed due to combat resolution.
By drawing them in and attacking them in the rear (closing the trap), the Undead general would not be able to replace the losses quickly by magic (see combat resolution) as they are take taking more damage than they can replace. Also, in Warhammer, engaging them in the rear denies the defending unit of the benefit of ranks which considerable lowers their combat resolution equation. Overall, a textbook move fitting for the White Dwarf tacticus!

I just finished defeating these guys but narrowly lost.
It was a real war of attrition with the vampires and Henrich Kemmeler giving my armies little to no time to recover.
At the walls of Castle Drakenhof, the vampires finally met their end and I had the city razed to the ground.

This gets cliche really fast and I feel as if I’ve heard it in ever fantasy story. You have the big bad vampires who serve as nothing but to be fodder for everyone to say “ we did it! We did it because we had hope!!” Lol Manfred should of smashed that fucking dude 1v1 but, “ he was tired that day......yeah tired”. Come on man. His tactics are still studied till this day? Just be be human with lots of plot armor.

The crypt wraiths and spirit hosts alone could have destroyed the empire (as they couldn't be damaged). How in the hel (pun) did they deal with the wraiths?

The way it works ingame is they have the "Ethereal" trait. All physical damage reduced by 75% iirc.
Magic damage does full damage to them, maybe fire too, can't remember.

In my game this battle was one sided (the humans died in five minutes) the only battle that actually mattered was the siege of their capital and that was truly legendary

hey is this an unmodded version? If it is I suggest you try using steel faith overhaul to make the armies closer to lore (so more zombies in a unit, for instance). Also Mixu's mods have a host of characters you can use in your lore videos, already made for you.

Thanks man :) This had the Blood effects enabled but I use a mod that reduces the ammount of blood in the models. Its called "Less Blood, Less Gore II".

Hey, I was wondering, where do some of those mods come from? I checked the list, but I don't think that included the special Stirlander regiments, and the unit that had Bretonnian halberds, and all that stuff.
You are right-. And I tried to use that same mod again for another video not too long ago and couldn't find it. It was a one time thing that used and then disabled. I'm sorry i can't help you this time Rufus, I have forgotten the name :(
