    I appreciate how well you do your videos! Good information that is straightforward and concise. BUT……… mostly I like your Goku sitting on nimbus tattoo!! I recently got into bonsai (about 1yr ago) and Japanese maples are my favorite so far, I have 3 big maples that I plan to use as parent trees for air layers in the future. I have a long waaaaaaaaaay to go.

      We all start somewhere! You'll have a lot fun and learn a lot as you go. I need to get the colors touched up on the tattoo, but thank you!

    New front looks good, it's a nice big trunk in fairness

      Thank you. I think the nebari looks a better here and I think a new, more compact apex will only accentuate that trunk size more.

    Maybe carve out that big scare on the back? Another thing maybe is to keep skinning the edge of the bark around the edge to encourage growth over the scare. I enjoy all your videos!

      Some of the comments never come to me.. I am sorry I never replied. But thank you very much! This tree will probably get a small amount of spring work but I've promised to sell it to a friend once it warms up.

    Beautiful tree and repotting. Would like to know the history of the trees you have and work on. How long you've had it, where it was from, the care you've provided it, pruning, repotting, etc. Thanks. Beautiful!

      Thank you! This particular tree came from Schley's Bonsai in Deland, Florida. I've only had it a year. It was field grown for 20 years or so and went in a pot probably five or six years ago. This video series showed the first repotting. It needs a lot of root work and it may go into the ground for a year or two to help heal the big chop wound. Those two things kind of go against each other, so it has a long way to go yet.

    I was looking forward to the change of front process. I’m guessing a bigger pot reduces the need to trim big roots ?

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right. I tried to rotate it off camera and there is about 2" of thick root that would need to be removed. Some of it is visible on the surface. I didn't want to hack at it and shoehorn it into the pot, so I just elected to keep the new front in mind when training and look for a pot that will accommodate it for next repot.

    Did you buy the moss or collect it from somewhere? Is it brown because you have kept it in that bag? How long will it survive like that? Nice trees and videos btw.

      Thank you! That s sphagnum moss, store bought. It's dead, mainly used to hold water to help keep surface roots from drying out.

    So how is it doing today?

  • @G2nelson

    You need to add more organic matter into your soil mix. Also you've selected several components that have fantastic drainage then put on a full drainage layer which you can read more about itself but is probably unnecessary and possibly harmful. Have you looked into the pH lvl of your soil?

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Why would you think that I need more organic matter in my soil? There is enough to provide some amount of nutrients and what is lacking will be supplemented by fertilizer during the year. Akadama retains and releases water fine, and all my trees have an automated watering system. There is a reason Boon's mix is the premier mix these days.
      A drainage layer simply improves aeration at the bottom of the pot and may delay downward root growth a little. This helps me because I will probably be wanting to repot again next year if I find a suitable pot to display what I see as the new front. Otherwise it is probably unnecessary, yes.
      Trident maples aren't picky when it comes to pH. The soil should be slightly acidic. I have some charcoal I can amend the soil with if needed but all my other trees love the mix.

      @@smalltrees It has already been shown that the famous drainage layer is a myth regarding its supposed function of helping irrigation water leave the pot more quickly. There are many articles on the internet to consult on this topic, I hope you don't mind my comment. Greetings, you have a great channel!

      I apologize, youtube never showed me this comment. No, I don't have any kids. But I do believe the interest in horticulture runs in my family. Both sides of my family have ties to growing plants in some capacity or another.
