Today I discovered this channel by pure luck... the TH-cam algorithm took quite a few years (6/7) to realise that I was interested in street photography, even though I don't watch anything else on this platform... I subscribed, of course !
I love that Greg Girard is getting more recognition on here. He's by far my favourite photographer, the scenes he's captured over the decades are atmospherically wonderful, and he seems a really cool guy.
He's incredibly prolific isn't he? In working with him on the feature, I can also vouch for him being a really cool guy - just very friendly and approachable
Have been following since day 1 and so proud of all the work you guys are doing for the community. I'm based here in Vancouver, BC and we are so glad to see Greg featured, his work is outstanding and he's such a humble guy. Will place an order soon for me and a bunch of local photographers. Excited to see what's in store! Thank you for the fantastic work.
I find it frustrating we spend time taking and editing photographs only for them to be viewed on small screens all of which have varying degrees of colour calibration so the photo's never get seen as they really should. I'm definitely looking to get my photo's printed and put into a book, even a small magazine style book one day. Framelines is definitely a great way to share information on photographers and show their work in print.
Absolutely agree. With screens, there’s very little control over how your photos are presented to the viewer. Color variations, brightness variations etc
@Phillip Banes I have an iPad Mini and there are some colour variations between different models but it's the brightness on any device that gets in the way of viewing photos as intended. Besides, you can't encourage every last person who views your images to buy an iPad. Most will still use a phone.
@Phillip Banes Not everyone who views mine or your images is viewing them on an Apple device. You can't guarantee the exact colour or brightness level, regardless of device. Not the same as a photo print.
Thanks for putting these out there - they are an antidote to an Instagram world. Nice way to see the work in print and up close and be affordable for all. After I've gone over mine pretty well I leave them in places where others can find them and hopefully enjoy and pass on to others.
as much stick as Instagram gets, it has exposed thousands if not millions of people to the genre. I noticed a huge uptick in popularity during the pandemic.
I’ve made a lot of friends through Instagram and have discovered a lot of great photography through it, but I do feel like we’re a bit too dependent on it as a platform for viewing photography. -Shane
Agreed. Demonization of IF for not being something it was never intended to be has always intrigued me. There are other social platforms to use, try them out 😎
@@JoeLopezWhich other platforms would you recommend? I’ve tried Adobe portfolio, Vero, behance, Pinterest, twitter (X), Flickr, facebook, instagram, and WhatsApp. The foto app seems promising.
This is GREAT! I hate, "shorts" ~ these vertical videos as short as 8 seconds. I watch on a 4K projector/screen combination. Further, the thought of a person watching Apocalypse Now on their smartphone, for the first time, makes my flesh crawl! SUBSCRIBED! ❤
Shane? Your underground photos are AMAZING!!! You REALLY REALLY REALLY NAILED it!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥 I will DEFINITELY BE SUBSCRIBING to the magazine!!! So glad i found you guys. Great work!!!
Just watched this and somehow found myself buying issues 1-6 without really considering the cost at all. Christmas present to myself. Looking forward to looking at them over the holidays.
The magazine is great, much appreciated and very much needed. It fills a real gap. My copy of issue 4 arrived yesterday and is on the side drying out..... The suspense is almost killing me!
@@frame-lines maybe a $8-$10 tier with some new perks . Like reviewing some pics from a Patron or a chance to have a pic in the magazine ..idk lol but I’ll b joining soon
This is a great project ( I have all 4) and well worth supporting. I also urge any followers to have a go at creating their own 1 off photo books , if they have not tried it, its easy to do from Lightroom or Apple photos.. I have created 5 now and the whole experience is very rewarding and great to try. Plus these books are likely to be around long after I have gone…not sure the same can be said for all my digital files!
I would love to order your magazine, and have come close each time a new issue comes out, but unfortunately shipping and exchange to Canada makes each issue cost $40, which is just too steep for me. I do wish you nothing but success and admire the work you present. Cheers.
Incredible work! Wondering if there's any kind of bundle deal where we can buy all of your magazines at once? They look fantastic and I'd love to catch up on every issue. Thanks for sharing this!
How I miss going to a museum or gallery and studying photo prints on their walls. You could see every detail and nuance in the print, better than you can on some computer or cell phone. How TH-cam must hate my saying that! Now you have to visit library and look through photography books, better than on a computer or cell phone!
Just had to place an order before watching further from 2:31. This looks very promising! I'll be checking my old analogue mailbox everyday from now on... Ohh Joy...
It looks great, congratulations to both of you. The fourth issue looks amazing for what I can see from the screen. Has there been any update about the possibility to get copies in Europe without the extra high import tax? The first issue cost me 50 euro, and i couldn't afford to order the following issues.
I re-read issue 1 when I knew issue 4 was en route but then I couldn’t leave issue 4 lying there so I will read that next . . . and then re- visit issue 2. My next problem is finding somewhere to store them 🤦♂️🤦♂️
Love what you guys are doing, the work is so carefully curated that to be included in an issue is a huge honour IMO. Huge fan of Greg Girard's work, I've been in touch with him a few times and have a signed copy of each of Under Vancouver and HK:PM, I'll definitely be buying more. Found him on Instagram a couple of years ago, but needed to see it in print. Looking forward to my issue arriving and happy to support such a great and well done initiative ;)
I Have many of the same books that you show, each of the photographers would hate instagram. I agree looking at a phone and judging an image is not what photography is about
My old photography lecturer used to say "The negative is the score. The screen is the rehearsal. The print is the performance" (paraphrasing Ansel Adams)
How much representation are in these magazines? As a Black man from the Bronx I've had to turn to social media to find myself and my community in the work. Before social media we were more or less invisible, or negatively depicted. This goes for many folks of color. Has their been an attempt within this magazine to steer away from exclusively white street photographers focusing on areas from the white gaze?
That's absolutely something that we've considered from day one and we've been lucky enough to feature a number of incredible black photographers throughout last year, including Johny Pitt's series in this issue, which I think is a really unique look at black Britain, and one of the most interesting series we've ever featured. We have the same attitude regarding the inclusion of other marginalised voices within the genre. -Shane
This is awesome. Photo magazines in Mexico are a pile of crap (and there are just a few of them). This looks awesome, but due to pricing being high for shipping, I will get the digital ones 😊 I think they will look great on a 12.9 iPad Pro but I will miss having a printed version of them. Good luck with the project!
Instagram and the others are horrible for viewing any decent photographs!! Look at for a second and go to the next is not doing justice for any art, no less photography!! The magazine is a great idea, but il love overseas and I don't think I could get the magazine. The printed piece is it and has been for me in my 49 years as a photographer!
It's an unavoidable comparison, when Parr's seaside work is so well known. For what it's worth, it's my impression that they have very different sensibilities -Shane
People who think looking at a photograph on a cellphone is in anyway adequate are like people who think they're photographers because they can look through a viewfinder and push a button.
To be honest, I'm still disappointed that you had a non SF based photographer representing SF in issue 3. The community and history of San Francisco street photography is very rich. The pictures were very nice on the eyes but in my opinion fail to represent the street photography scene in San Francisco
I kind of see your point, but to be fair, Josh is free to photograph any city he wants- that's the freedom of photography right? Just as I'm allowed to photograph London, despite not being from here. We're not offering any definitive viewpoints here and Josh even said in his accompanying text that he was visiting. I would like to know more about SF street photographers though- is there anyone you'd recommend that we check out? -Shane
