I finally watched Garry Winogrands Doc yesterday! I remember watching Everybody Street with my brother in the theatre when it came out and I just got my first GR and discovered Street Photography through that film and Street Photography Now book. Good times. Haven't seen the Martha and Feinstein Docs yet. Looks very promising!
Everybody street is special eh? I like the variety of photographers in it. Showing everyone from Boogie to Mermelstein, and how they all have this weird thing in common - they can't stop taking pictures :) Cheryl Dunn, the director, has a new documentary about outsider artist Dash Snow and it's really good too.
Shoutout to the Harry Gruyaert 'Photographer' documentary. Always feel like he's one of the forgotten ones but his colour work is phenomenal and the film really goes into detail about how he works.
Such wonderful images by such talented people. For me the image @ 4:58 really stands out, one of my all times favourite pictures. The mans stride, the 2 girls legs and arms all in line with the kite strings and the horse kite! Absolutely amazing picture, just perfect.
Thanks for making this video. I made it to the first video mention before I paused this video and started watching everybody street. Will return to watch the other suggestions after!
There use to be a William Klein documentary on TH-cam but got taken down. I loved watching it and it’s my most watched photography doc. He’s my inspo when it comes to taking photos.
Whilst not street photography per se, The Genius of Photography - which is a BBC series from around 2006 - had some great interviews with people like Parr and Meyerowitz in it. The series still inspires me today as it takes photography from the early days of Talbot and Daguerre until the point it was made when digital was just starting to become more relevant.
That's a great series. Alan Yentob interviewed parr for the 'World According to Parr' documentary and there's a great 2 part series on Tom Wood too- both are available on youtube
@@frame-lines Ooh, I'll check those out. It's always good finding different things on YT outside of the endless torrent of gear reviews! Parr's small world has just been reprinted by Dewi Lewis FYI...
The burning shoe - "How much film do I have?" LoL Great tips, I've seen a couple and I'll seek out the others. My Framelines magazine is on the way, I am looking forward to it! Thank you for the great content.
Great video! Great suggestions. Two more: “A Choice of Weapons” about Gordon Parks and “Ricky Powell: the Individualist” These have probably already been mentioned and are not strictly about street photography but still very good…
Really appreciate that your channel dedicates itself to the art and your homage to those who have inspired many of us. At the same time you provide a generous forum for today's artists to create and distribute their work. Thank you!
Amazing video, Shane. Have you watched the documentary Finding Vivian Maier? For me is one of the most unbelievable pieces of the history of street photography.
Thanks Shane, I got a few to check out from your list! Haven't seen 'In No Great Hurry' in the comments, a 2013 doc on Saul Leiter. Loosely around getting a book together and his take on life/photography.
I really liked 'In no great hurry' for what it was. I'd love to see another Leiter doc that covered his career, and different aspects of his photography like fashion and his early black and white work
@@frame-lines Haha, my shout for popcorn if someone will actually do all the work to make it. I think there’s a William Klein one here on youtube as well? A few to (re)watch now! Cheers mate.
One of my favourite docs is 'In No Great Hurry' (already mentioned in the comments). Possibly doesn't quite meet the criteria but completely charming nevertheless. There is a series from the BBC 'What Artists Do All Day'. It spends considerable time with several artists but the episodes on Tom Wood would interest many street photographers.
Great Magazine! Excellent, stimulating channel. Thanks for this excellent list to follow up on…its probably a bit cheesy of me but I was blown away a few years ago by the Vivian Mair film when I watched it by chance..which encouraged me to think that anyone could experiment with street photography ……which I have done and continue to do!
You got the most important one which is "Everybody Street".. Here are a few more: [TH-cam] "The Many Lives Of William Klein" / Khalik Allah "Slang Aperture", "Antonyms of Beauty", "Heron Arts" / Christopher Anderson "Entering Worlds Through Photography" ... That's all i can remember right now. 👌
Thanks. I have EVERYBODY STREET on Bluray and the WNOGRAND and ROBERT FRANK docs on DVD. I will definitely check out FILL THE FRAME and CONTEMPORARY...USA. Wonder if you would consider FINDING VIVIAN MAYER a street photography doc? I do, albeit in conjunction with the "found treasure" aspect. She was prolific for sure.
I do love her photography but Finding Vivian is more about the story of the discovery rather than street photography itself- that’s why I didn’t include it
Pretty good list, with the exception of 'Fill The Frame'... didnt think much of that one at all, though we both agree on 'Everybody Street'... it's superb. As was the Winogrand one. There are a couple of decent Vivian Maier ones out there...the BBC did one, and John Maloof made a doc feature as well. There's also an amazing Jim Marshall doc on Amazon Prime too. He's best known for his music work, but did plenty of street stuff too.
Love this list, have only seen about half of these :) I might be biased, but highly recommend the 30min doc Reely&Truly. Easily found on YT. Two other photog films I've worked on are: Show me the Picture: The Story of Jim Marshall, and Brigitte, a short doc about Brigitte Lacombe.
Quite a hard watch, but McCullin is a superb documentary. Thinking about it, it’s not street photography, and is a hard watch, but I think it’s a must see.
How were you able to watch the Garry Winogrand one in the UK? Each place I've gone says its unavailable in the UK and I can only buy the DVD on amazon. Thanks! Nice video and glad to see some cool films included. Tim did a great job on his film as a first time film maker!
Hi guys, regarding your Frameline Magazine - is it possible that you don't offer shipping to Germany?! I honestly couldn't find the option to select Germany or Deutschland...
I just bought Fill the Frame on Vimeo and didn't like it. Looks like it tries too hard to be a copy of Everybody Street, and for that, I think it is a big missed opportunity. Although it managed to gather a special group of photographers the structure is the same of Everybody Street: interviews, clips from NY, and a photography critic talking in between. I would make more sense trying to do something different, or, if you're going to keep the same structure, maybe doing it in a different city (London or Tokyo for exemple) would be more interesting.
Tbh, street photography remains the New York ghetto of photography... Most street photography(tm) today is still trapped in the squalor of this enclosure. Copying mindlessly the thin genre that came before them. Very few attempt to transcend this to actual documentary work, to embew their photo series with substance, emotion, truth, etc... I can think of less than a handfull.

Finding Vivian Meier is one I love..! Awesome episode..!

I totally agree with this.
Thanks for letting me know of him, phenomenal work.
It's an amazing profile on a living master who is still out there with his camera.

Amazing mate ! Thank you for that ! There is two of these documentary I haven't seen yet, that will be delicious !
Thanks again !
This is fantastic. Thanks so much!
Thanks for watching! :)
great recommendations! I think I've only seen 2 of them, so I've got these top of my list now. Appreciate it, guys!
Glad you enjoyed it. There's lots more great docs to talk about so might do a follow up in a few weeks

such a good topic and much appreciated for the research and production you put together here...well done
Cheers fella. I could have listed 3 times as many docs but in the end- maybe there’ll be a part II :)

One of my favorites as well. I've watched it many times...
Thanks. There were two films I wasn't aware of. Much appreciated.
Which 2? The Feinstein one is a bit difficult to find
Great list Shane 👍😊
Cheers Ross. Anything you’d add to the list?
@@frame-lines I remember watching Bill Cunningham New York a few years back.
That was a good episode. Thanks.
Thank you for the inspiration!
really enjoying this channel! can't wait to dive into these docs
Thanks Shane - exactly what I’ve been looking for 🙌
Thank you for this!
Wow, great post -- thanks :)
Great list. Would you include Bill Cunningham in this canon by any chance?
yes, absolutely, if i had more time, or make a followup video at some point.
There is a documentary "Bill Cunningham New York" from 2010.
Thank you, really helpful.
Thanks for the mention!
Great video. I also recommend: 'Leaving Home, Coming Home: A Portrait of Robert Frank'
I'm sure it's been said in the comments already but Show Me the Pictures: The Story of Jim Marshall is a good one too.

Don’t miss Near Equal from Daido Moriyama
Ooh. I haven’t seen that but it sounds interesting. Thanks!

Leaving Home, Coming Home on prime is a solid about Robert Frank.
Don't Blink is another great Robert Frank doc. A very tragic personal life.
This video is exactly what I needed to feel inspired again. Thank you so much for the amazing content!
Quite a hard watch, but McCullin is a superb documentary. Thinking about it, it’s not street photography, and is a hard watch, but I think it’s a must see.
It's nice to see the additional suggestions here in the comments as well. Keep em coming 😉
You have also : The Many Lives of William Klein 🙂
Tell me where to find the movie ''film the frame'' of Tim Huyhn?

I used a VPN to get around the geo restrictions - I was too impatient
@@frame-lines haha ok cool fab ill try that! Thanks!
I have a multi region DVD player, that will get you around the restrictions.
@@wylie_photo oh nice, so when can I come over for movie night? lol

I think I watch Everybody Street once a month.
You showed all the photographs in Everybody Street except Boogie....
Shame these are not in Netflix or Amazon
Have you seen
“RICKY POWELL: THE INDIVIDUALIST”?
I haven't! Thanks for bringing it to my attention :)
Do you have your own work without talking about someone else work?? Do you have an instagram site or maybe Facebook??
No gear or equipment mentioned. So good to watch. Get the shot! Period…The photographers in the documentaries are image eating machines…

Has anyone ever told you that you look sort of like the American actor Jason Sudeikis? If you get that a lot I apologize lol
ah it's the moustache surely. Someone mentioned Ted Lasso on the last video. Go Team!
