EXCELLENT DEMONSTRATION!!! Very clear and precise. You taught us so much navigating through the EdgeRouter. We do have 1 question though, what rule would you create to BLOCK Social Media sites on 1 PC only (a single LAN IP Address)?
No. As ads are all served through UDP/TCP protocol(s) you can't block that protocol, without blocking everything else using it including the rest of the web. Blocking ads this way would be ineffective unless you are curating a database of the millions of IP's who are serving the ads - yourself. Better to use Ublock Origin or some other add-on. You could on a small scale block...lets say the Pandora Ad server.... but not ads in general. :)
Very nice tutorial! I've tried to block some custom application for a list of IP's, but unfortunately is not working. Can you give me some guidelines or to make a tutorial with this advanced case, please. Thanks
You have given me all the reason to stay with the EdgeRouter X. Thank you so much for the sources and links to your configuration files. The slides were icing on the cake. I also would like to know how to block social media on only 1 or 2 PC's. Side note; I can only get 970 Mbps, even though my plan gives me 1200 Mbps. I ran test direct from CM1000 Cable Modem and I have topped over 1200. This tells me that the EdgeRouter X is only capable of 1000 Mbps in the perfect world. Am I correct?
This was a great tutorial on how to configure site blocking via the firewall rules - but the demo wasn’t great. I don’t know why you used 2 different machines - but on one machine browser you consistently showed the sites that do not load (Twitter/Facebook) and on the other computer/browser you consistently showed the sites that DO load (Yammer/LinkedIn). That doesn’t sufficiently demonstrate that the changed firewalls actually do anything. The loading behavior you demonstrated could have easily been explained by one computer being totally blocked and the other being totally open. To be clear - I do not think you faked anything. I’m just pointing out how the demo you performed does not really show that your configuration changes did anything at all (in the hopes that your future videos will include better demonstrations). A better demo would show that the configuration changes actually CHANGE the behavior (conclusively). I also understand that the demo’s didn’t even need to be included - and the main goal of the video was to demonstrate how to configure the firewall - which you nailed. This comment is meant to be constructive criticism - not simply a pedantic complaint.
Is there a way to block a site that is not in any of the categories?
