Use a Resistor to Stop Interior LEDS From Glowing

  • If you've added interior LED lights to your vehicle, they may be "glowing" dimly even if all of the lights are switched off. This can be fixed by installing a resistor, which can be found at

    Tried these on my Dakota and fixed the led glow issue. Resistors do heat up if left on for awhile . Use caution if your paranoid of heat but if your like me and annoyed by the glow. This will fix the issue.

    This worked for me. My front dome uses two bulbs and my back uses three bulbs. I used two leds in the front and in the back dome I used two leds and kept one regular halogen bulb and it stop the glowing. The two leds are so strong that you can barely tell. This balances out the glowing effect, not ideal but works.

    So I put one resistor in with my front passenger dome light, It worked. However if I click on just that one passenger dome light the rear map lights glow. Would a resistor in both front dome lights and both rear map lights fix this? Or should I just live with it?

    Seems to me that the resistor in parallel with the LED will pass some leakage current in lieu of the LED light itself. Something like 0.012 A using Ohm's law assuming no current through the LED bulb in parallel. So this means that the battery drain will persist after this workaround except you won't see it any more.

    Just did this today in my 2017 VW Golf. The problem I was having, is when I had my lights set to turn on when the doors open, and this caused the lights to stay dimmly lit, and not having that feature on annoyed me. Inserting one of these resistors along with the LED fixed my problem. Thanks for the video!

    This doesn’t fix anything related to the real problem of stray current in the circuit. The resister acts as a load, absorbing the stray current, diverting it from the light. The battery will still drain. It’s like fixing a small plumbing leak by wrapping a towel around it, so you never see the water.

      14.4 Volts / 1000 Ohms = 0.0144 Amps (or 14.4 mA). 14.4 mA * 14.4 Volts = 0.207 Watts, or about a fifth of a Watt... so a quarter Watt resistor should suffice.

      @piedmonttiger265  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm I haven't had to add one to those, sorry I don't have an answer from experience, but this may work! Lots of bulbs can be purchased in an "Error-Free" configuration (albeit for slightly higher price). These bulbs often are nothing more than standard LEDs with a resistor soldered onto the board, in efforts to defeat newer cars' computers saying there is a bulb out (because of the difference in resistance expected by the computer for a standard bulb and the actual resistance given by the LED. It may be worth it to pick one of these up to see if it will fix the issue!

      Actually, it can drain it. For weeks I've been battling with a starting problem, i.e. my car wouldn't start. I got the whole system tested, the battery was strong, starter good and alternator charging, all passed the load testing and such.
      Then I realized that when my dome light turns off, the LEDs stay very dimly lit. You think LEDs don't draw much, but imagine this over night, when it drops to 0F in the winter and your car doesn't start in the morning.
      Damage to battery? Maybe not. Drain? Absolutely. Since I took mine out, it got all better.

    • @andymouse
      @andymouse 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid the drain from a led is about 20 mA fully lit, the after glow was a tiny amount of current not enough to flatten a car battery overnight! their removal was a red herring, maybe the actual problem was a poor connection which also went away.

    Will they still be as bright since your limiting the current?

    • @nameismetatoo4591
      @nameismetatoo4591 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This doesn't limit the current. Wiring the resistor in series would reduce the current, but since it's in parallel it doesn't affect the current going through the LED. If the power source were weaker then it would result in higher voltage drop, which would cause the LED to glow less bright. But because it's being powered by a car battery/alternator, the additional current draw will have no measurable impact on voltage.

    • @jfair98
      @jfair98 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The voltage is there regardless. With just the led the voltage is used to slightly glow the bulb with the resistor the voltage is transfered into heat on resistor. Your battery voltage will be he exact same with the exact same draw.

      hey boss. you need a led flasher relay, your gonna need to find out where your stock flasher relay is first.

    • @jfair98
      @jfair98 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use a different relay or you can also buy bigger resistors made for led turn signals to stop the hyper flashing. Just search here for led turn signal resistor and you'll find a bunch of videos on it. Same exact principle as this video only bigger resistors and since each turn signal is on its own separate circuit you have to put one on each turn signal bulb.

    • @tylercaye356
      @tylercaye356 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some cars have flasher relays. Others are controlled by the bcm (body control module). They sell solutions for both online. Either an LED flasher relay or resistors you wire into the negative and turn signal positive wire of each signal that has an LED bulb. Just make sure to wire it in to the signal wire and not the running light wire. Best to look up a wire diagram if going with resistors rather than guessing
