    The reason you love the 8 + 5.333 interval is that it's a perfect 5th, which means when you play a triad you're getting the 7th and 9th thrown in for free... 'jazz chords' ensue :)

    Nice Review! BTW - The "PG" control switches between Portamento/Glissando. Portamento (also referred to as Glide or Slide) is a continuous pitch transition between notes (controlled by a speed parameter). Glissando is a transition that happens in discreet note steps - like running your fingers up a piano between 2 notes (also speed controlled).

    when I brought home and first turned on a CS-80 decades ago, I was disappointed. The sound was thin and wimpy. The oscillators were not like a Minimoog at all. Neither were the filters. "This thing sucks," is what my crestfallen self said.
    And no pitch/mod wheels. Wtf?
    But I persisted in working the sliders. Then I played a Dm7 chord and suddenly my life changed. I was hooked for life. It occurred to me that the comparative thin and wimpy sound across a chord is exactly the magic of the CS-80. Thos 8 individual voices under Polyphonic Aftertouch .... worlds away magic.
    This synth was always so alive. So perfectly imperfect.
    Add the 5 1/3 foot stop and you get into sublime territory

    • @jesusdiaz6663
      @jesusdiaz6663 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The presets are very thin, buzzy and and annoying. The secret to it is making your own patches and playing with the touch response parameters. It has a HUGE low end. The brass is to die for and the strings sound gorgeous. When I play mine the walls in my cave rumble.

    • @BarryWarne
      @BarryWarne 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jesusdiaz6663 yes - half of what the CS-80 is all about is the player interface, plus the fact that it's actually two thin, shitty sounding synths sandwiched together x 8. All those wonderful flaws worked in concert with one another. And the instrument would change as it warmed up. You can really lean into the playing.

    IL & AL is a replacement for the SUSTAIN of modern synths. Nothing to do with filter velocity sensitivity.
    To explain (assuming a positive EG amount of modern synth as the CS-80 can't do negative EG amount): where a modern filter ADSR will take a default cutoff (the big knob setting) up to the top (the EG amount), then down to sustain level and finally back down further to the default cutoff. The CS-80 uses the cutoff setting as the sustain level. If you want the env to make a pick up before going back to sustain, you need to give AL (which is the diff between the usual EG amount and the modern sustain level). But, il you want the ADR to start from a lower cutoff than the sustain level, that's where the IL enters into play. Notice that its max is -5, a negative amount. So increasing IL increases the diff between the sustain and the low level of the ADR, low level that is usually the cutoff knob level on newer synths. The thinking is inverted, but it's equivalent.
    Modern synth:
    EG Amount (positive)
    /\
    / \____ Sustain
    / \
    CUTOFF --- ---- (back to cutoff big knob)
    CS-80:
    cutoff + AL (up to +5) (at most cutoff + 5)
    /\
    CUTOFF is here! (beware!) --------------------------> / \____ (CUTOFF settings (both LP & HP))
    / \
    cutoff + IL ("up" to MINUS 5, IL always negative) -- --- (back to cutoff + IL (IL is negative) so at most cutoff - 5)
    As a result, if you offset LP & HP leaving a small corridor for the sound to pass, the EG will make the corridor (the walls staying in parallel) go up to cutoff + AL, down to cutoff, down to cutoff + IL (IL is negative!).
    And brightness enlarges the distance between the walls of the corridor in both directions simultaneously, like a Summit would increase its filter separation if you will.
    Settings on the far right help assigning modulation from the polypressure keyboard or velocity to various settings i.e., brilliance (enlarging the corridor HP down, LP up) or VCA). I don't know a setting that helps modulate the EG amounts (= AL - IL) and tie them to velocity. Though, if you let the HP all the way down only working with the LP, then brilliance vel sensitivity (labelled "brilliance INITIAL") becomes equivalent to velocity sensitive LP, as the HP can't go down any further than the lowest setting.

    Glissiando and the Foot references are so that people reading sheet music can understand the controls. Both the CS8-80 and The GX-1 Organ were designed with classical organists as the intended customer. The reason why just about everything has it's own slider control as opposed to a knob is because organists are used to pulling draw bars and leavers to change orchestral sounds on the fly. The reason why so much can be routed to velocity and poly aftertouch is because in addition to dynamics, Yamaha wanted each note played to have a subtly different timbre than the previous one. The goal was to simulate the different breath control from player to player in a wind instrument section or not quite matching finger placements for the string section. As well as other organic sound variations you get from multiple musicians playing in an orchestra. I love that all this ingenious theory and meticulous design on Yamaha's part resulted in zero organ players buying them. And keyboard synth players spending fortunes to get their hands on one.

    A quick answer I found about the difference between Glissando and Portamento (both are Italian btw. as most terms that come from classical music are):
    "Irrespective of singing, a glissando indicates that specific notes (whether specified or not) should be played or performed. For example, if there is a perfect-fifth leap with a port. indication, the performer should play/sing all of the chromatic notes in between unless otherwise indicated.
    A portamento indicates that no specific pitches are necessary and may include semi or quarter tones as well. A glissando is more gestural and is often larger than a portamento."

    • @bentropy
      @bentropy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah my understanding is that portamento is a smooth gliding between pitches whereas glissando is stepped (like dragging your finger quickly across a keyboard, or the difference between sliding your finger up/down a fretted fingerboard vs a fretless one)

      Behringer wouldn't bother. The bill of materials is too high. Think about the UB-Xa: it has two CE3340 VCOs per voice but two CEM3320 filters, and one is always left unused so this could be reduced to one with some clever circuitry.. The CS80 has FOUR active VCFs per two VCOs, and these VCFs in the DD are almost discrete (they use a SSM2164 per filter, several op amps, and a lot of passive components) because Yamaha designed the IG00156 and it would be too costly to fabricate this chip again in quantities just for the CS line of synths because of the lower demand.

    The sliders marked in length measurements goes back to one of the coolest music machines ever created, The Pipe Organ. The different lengths brought out different overtones and was a huge tone shaping device.
    These sliders were also used by the makers of the Hammond organ company (and other electronic organs) and was a major component to their sound, of course pipes were not used the pipe length was created electronically. I'm not an export this subject band I'm sure there's more to the story of pipe organ lengths.
    If you've never heard a Pipe Organ live , I highly recommend experiencing one in person. There a lot of old churches in LA

      With those old pipe organs... the ENTIRE building is the resonating chamber. It's meant to shake the entire house.

    • @BillVincent
      @BillVincent 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The pipe organ was used in cathedrals and churches, in combination with the resonant nature of the building housing it, to create an "alpha state" that sought to make people more receptive to the message, bypassing critical thinking and creating sort of an hypnotic experience, especially with the low, incredibly deep bass drone notes coming from pipes big enough to "reach heaven". Subtle mind bending through sound waves, along with judicious music selection to create a mood and mind state receptive to the message. For most churches today the organ has been replaced by a church band, which gives off a totally different energy. Some still use the organ tho, especially droning on during the alter call, creating that hypnotic undercurrent of tones that makes people more receptive to opening their wallet. The hypnotic effects of drone bass also extend to today's rave/EDM scene, tho luckily there is no religious or political message being pushed. A lot of new age music also contains the ultra-low drone tones for the same reason, putting the listener in a relaxed, receptive state.

    The 16', 8', 4' etc. is a throw back to stops on a pipe organ. It signifies the length of the pipe that produces the sound. It lets the organist know at what octave at which the tone will be produced. Great machine.

    Sliders 1:30 is better visualizer of how the sound may sound, than pots, and for envelopes you can see the ADSR curve and how it behaves.Personally i wish all my synths had sliders instead of pots (maybe cut off and resonance is better of with pots?).Lucky you Ricky for getting close to one of these....

    I have two CS-80's. One needs a wave shaping chip IG00158. Haven't been able to locate one for awhile. Becoming curious if the one used with the Deckards Dream clone is able to be modified to be compatable with an actual CS-80. Naturally if it was, I would want to still find an original one eventually, but would purchases one in a moments if it worked. Those of us who have the original are going to eventually need to start sourcing parts in unconventional ways. Unfortunately the Deckards Dream clone is a bit of a one trick pony, as the magic of the CS-80 lies in the polyphonic aftertouch, and its corresponding modulation controls. You have to play one to believe it. It is magical. That being said, perhaps the fine folks who back engineered the CS-80 to create Deckards Dream are willing to emulate the keyboard components of the CS-80, possibly as a universal controller so its use could enjoy a broader spectrum use.

      I had one for 20 years and sold in 2000. Unless you are creating for film, giving synthposeums along side Susanne Ciani and her Buchla or
      simply indulging in oneself, it is not , in my humble opinion, worth the money. The CS-80 has otherwise rendered itself useless in pop decades
      ago. Think of where it made it"s mark. With the likes of a few preset patches { brass, strings, bass } great { organ, clav and gt } cheesy, it helped
      pioneer pop music then.. I bought it for the prog rock of the day. It was fun and carried it around the USA with little synth problems. Fortunate
      indeed!!! Ultimately, it had it"s day and unfortunately, due to gear lust of this generation it has been elevated to an unattainable cost for most.

      @@excellentthings6268 I wouldn't get to set on that, a lot of cheesy pop effects come back in vogue and nostalgia can move units if its packaged right. LCD soundsystem has made classic tunes using a baldwin Fun Machine, which could be found on damn near any craigslist. It's about how its featured and mixed. The wave of recent 80's nostalgia is lost on me, gated reverb and cheesy drums, the abundance of cheap john carpenter imitations, never would have predicted that to be a thing but it is.

    On the filter, IL is Initial Level and AL is Attack Level. I'm going to cut and paste from the MemoryMoon ME80 manual since it explains this well:
    Sustain level is zero and matches with cutoff level.
    IL: Initial Level when the envelope starts. 0 - -5 volts. (negative values.)
    AL: Attack Level at the highest point. 0 - 5 volts. (positive values.)
    Attack: Time to reach the highest point set by the Attack Level.
    Decay: Time to reach zero.
    Release: Time to reach IL. The envelope starts and ends with IL.

    The oscillator range in feet is from organs. 16", the height of the organ pipe (low pitch) 2" hight pitch and 5-1/3 (Quint). Most vintage synths use feet, Roland, Moog, ARP 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 feet. :D

    I've had a CS-60 here for ten years.
    The basic sound is very close to this; sounds like he nailed the PWM and filters.
    It's a bummer that you have to get a separate unit for the ringmod, as that is one of the best parts of the original synth. Quivering float-y pads are one of it's top timbres, in addition to the wild percussive sweeps it can do. Once you try it you'll know what I mean haha.
    Also, there's LOTS of funk to be found in that highpass filter - you can do clavi and organ timbres that twist and fart every which-way when combined with touch response..
    And yeah....get a nice reverb (a phaser and delay wouldn't hurt either) strapped to the output of this PRONTO!!!
