Ghosts ’N Goblins retrospective: The delicate art of self-flagellation | NES Works

  • The second (and, as it happens, final) Micronics/Capcom joint for NES falls upon the cruel arcade torture implement known as Ghosts ’N Goblins. While it's a more technically competent port than 1942, the trademark Micronics jank makes a tough game even more brutal. You'll notice this video doesn't contain any footage captured beyond the second boss, and that is because I have better things to do with my life than dash my brains repeatedly against the torture implement that is this game. Anyway! Things get better from here.

    Another thing that made the NES version more fiendishly difficult was that they made certain semi-boss characters (like the giant troll-thingies) impervious to all but one or two weapons, and that they didn't put the spare armours in the same places as the arcade version. Ghosts 'n Goblins was one of my all-time favourite arcade games, but the one that really took my quarters was Gun.Smoke.

    This game was hard, but I loved it. My sister and I tag teamed our way through it one summer in about 3 days. We left the NES on(until we beat it) and would pause it when we got mad at it(turned off the TV to prevent burn in of the screen) or had to sleep. Without spoiling it for those who have not went through it.....it was most certainly a challenge.....but we did beat it.

      Yes! This was probably one of the hardest games for the NES, and also second in the Capcom series of NES games. “1942” was the first one which was a poorly made port of an arcade classic, but this one was also poorly made port of an arcade game, and it was a bad choice. After three early Capcom titles for the NES that were bad, Capcom started to make better games for the NES beginning in 1987 with “Section Z”, “Trojan”, “Gun-Smoke”, and the first “Mega Man” game, and Capcom was off to the races including “1943”, “Bionic Commando”, “Mega Man 2”, “DuckTales”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Mickey Mouscapade”, “Legendary Wings”, and tons more which makes Capcom, the best game publisher in the world. Capcom also put out franchises like “Mega Man”, “Street Fighter” and the “Resident Evil” series.
      The first ending after defeating the final boss might sent back to the very beginning which was bad. And after defeating the second final bosses, you get the worst ending in video game history due to the misspelling and poor grammar, it wasn’t that great. It says “Conglaturation: This story is happy end.” Both the original arcade and NES versions had the same problem. Did game designers are trying to come up with this ending?

    Everyone used to be so happy whenever anyone saw a money bag in Ghosts N' Goblins, as it would get you closer to the arcade high score. As NOBODY could beat the first level, the money bags allowed you to just about pip the current leader for the week.

    You have control where each weapon drops, its all based on a pre determinated pattern you take thru the level. Decending that set of stairs on stage 2 will always spawn the torch. My biggest gripe with games such as this is that you have to play the game how it was designed to. Alot of places you have to perform certain action in a certain way, anything slighly different, that may yield a result straight away, will bite you in the ass 5 steps later.

    I played this game so many times and found lots of interesting glitches. I used the stage select command to beat the boss repeatedly. Each time you defeat the boss, the enemies keep speeding up to the point that the crows in 1st stage fly right through you without the chance for hit detection to work properly.

    Thanks for acknowledging the grueling challenge of this game ! It always made me feel inadequate, and I feared games like Super Mario were for beginners, and this was the future. It really sheds a lot of light, knowing this was an arcade design. Early multiplayer games also presented unfair odds, as new players were tossed into the fray with people that know every facet of it, just waiting for fresh kills. Thankfully, online games these days tend to prefer to match up players at similar levels, and games as a whole are considered more of a casual entertainment medium rather than an athletic challenge. But popular entries like this make one wonder if gaming might have evolved into a high end sport.

      I love that feel of early deathmatches where you spawn in and instantly get gibbed
      at least you are right back into the game in 5 seconds and the entire game is just based around not getting gibbed anyway, so you just die enough times to spawn in a part of the map that no one is on and then you can finally shit on people.

    Some people considered me crazy for preferring the arcade version over the NES game, but after learning around a year ago that Micronics made this awful port, I think I have fair reason to despise this game a ton. The level select and credits cheat are a godsend though, and that's how I "beat" this on the Famicom mini.

    I managed to beat this game on an original PAL NES two years ago, and enjoyed it honestly. The key word is: memorization. Once you learn how to move, where to go to avoid unwanted weapons or to prevent attacks from some enemies, you can "easily" beat it. This is especially true in the final level, where you must build a specific strategy for each screen, to avoid been attacked by red arremers. But I understand that not everyone likes to memorize everything and calculate every single movement. It's not a long game though, and you have unlimited continues. I wish Battletoads had those too

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it helps that PAL games are a lot slower, running at 50fps instead of 60, but even then it's still a hugely impressive feat so well done, this is just a ridiculous game. Not even save states make it manageable. You've still gotta memorise everything and practice over and over

    Do you like Ghouls and Ghosts on the Sega Genesis? I felt that it was a much more forgiving game than Super Ghouls and Ghosts, and certainly more forgiving than Ghosts and Goblins on the NES. It's the only game in the series that I got to the last level the very first night I sat down with it. Partly because of the unlimited continues, partly the solid controls which included the ability to throw projectiles upward, and generally I just think it was a much less cruel game all the way around. Easily my favorite in the series

    Fantastic episode. You nailed it on the head with this one. Call me one of the ones kind of nostalgic. But you were very fair. As an early NES game a lot of people had this. And was kind of a high point outside of SMB for many till game production ramped up. This game probrably got more play time than any early NES game, including SMB for me and my friends. We spent a whole summer playing this game trying to beat it. There were controllers thrown, and curses bandied but we persevered. Passing the controller off to whoever was best at a certain section. We beat it. Not sure if it was skill or the result of randomness from getting enough successes thrown together in one play, like lining up cherries on a slot machine. We did get to the point of being able to reliablly reach the last tower. But that boss run and red armorer gauntlet was more luck than anything.

    The game is extremely difficult but I always saw it as a grand challenge. I've made it through the entire thing twice several times, you just have to actually hone your skills and work with the bad physics, and I still die several times along the way. You forgot to mention the game mercifully gives you unlimited continues so at least you can replay the same nightmare infinite times like I did as a child until you finally get it right. I justify the challenge...I would expect fighting through the minions of hell would not be a cakewalk.

    In the 1942 review, the episode previous to this one, you mention the possibility of Micronics being a lone college programmer doing contract work for a quick buck.
    I could definitely see this being true, but it makes it all the more hilarious (and possibly embarrassing for the fellow) that these quick-and-dirty port jobs have endured for decades. This very version of Ghosts n' Goblins being in multiple Virtual Console services, and a big release like the NES Classic, and the Micronics port of Athena being included in SNK 40th Anniversary Collection.
    It's just fascinating to me. I guess the moral is, always do the best possible work you can, because you'll never know which of your creations will endure xD

    Strangely, Capcom sometimes loves to challenge its player more on console than on a cabinet, even on non-Micronics works.
    UN Squadron in arcade is often told that it is easy to 1CC, while SNES version isn't shy to let player watch game over screen over and over.
    MvS on PSX has no mid-fight changing system, making it a bit more difficult to beat Apocalypse than its arcade counterpart.

    This was for a long time the only good port of the game. The home computer ports were awful. Although I did play the C64 one quite a bit. It was missing stages and for some reason the music was changed. It was awesome music mind you and in some ways went better with the game, but it wasn't true to the original. My only problems with this version wasn't the down graded graphics(which looked great in '86.) it was the shoddy controls. Getting stuck crouching on the ladders was frustrating in the arcade, but here it happened much more frequently. The scrolling was choppy as well. It's still kind of impressive how much of the arcade they kept in graphically. The big trolls have their heart tattoo. Arthur's armor even bounces while he moves.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Micronics didn't create the advanced mapper chip. They were developed internally at Nintendo. This just happened to be the first release to include that particular tech.

    • @classickid2185
      @classickid2185 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Still, Micronics was lucky to be the 1st to use the tech. And they used the 1 megabit thing as a selling point. Fine for this game, but they had the audacity to use to late '87 if i can remember.

    • @JeremyParish
      @JeremyParish  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I think they just earned that distinction through happenstance-I'm sure Nintendo wanted an arcade smash like GnG on their system ASAP and were happy to give Capcom the new tech to make it happen. Micronics happened to be the ghost coders on that one. As for cart sizes, those were being used as a selling point well into the Genesis era, even when the actual ROM sizes weren't that impressive. The important thing was to have lots of numbers on the box. Consumers like those, right?

      It's called "Git Gud" gameplay, and for some players like myself, it's the entirety of the purpose of playing games. Beating each stage, and eventually the whole game, is an accomplishment unto itself. You start with the agony of defeat, you grind and raise your skills, and then you crush your enemies as you ascend to the summit of the mountain. The polar opposite of passive entertainment. You don't play Ghosts N' Goblins to relax. You play to stoke and excite your warrior spirit.

    I don't understand why Dark Souls is brought up every time a difficult game is discussed. Dark Souls was not meant to be a difficult game, and is not once you understand it's nuances. GnG in comparison is just relentless and frustrating. Dark Souls is actually just enough challenge to be entertaining without being frustrating and ganky.

    • @robotlorekeeper9880
      @robotlorekeeper9880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that’s especially interesting considering how dark souls is much closer to the “Mario type” outlined in the video that encourages you to explore and master and replay, instead of just throwing shit at you until you pay up or leave. Your reward for winning isn’t just more monsters every stage and then eventual bragging rights, there’s a world there to get lost in. I’m fairly sure someone at fromsoft said or implied the early Zeldas were a big influence on Souls, which makes sense to me because those are challenging games with a lot of weird secret idiosyncrasies but that’s the whole draw, it’s A World.

    I've never really liked Ghosts 'n Goblins or any of it's sequels. Solid play controls matter. All games in this series suffer from the same jank controls, even the modern-ish ones like Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins. Even Castlevania originally suffered from Ghosts 'n Goblins style jank controls but thankfully the series shed that and I think that's one of the series the series went from good to amazing, and partly why Symphony of the Night still holds up today.
    The Ghosts 'n Goblins series never had the moment when it got over itself to make a solid game that controls well and doesn't punish players for actually playing it.

    • @boogieondatass
      @boogieondatass 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I actually think the Castlevania series has great controls on the NES. I suppose that the controls in Super Castlevania IV and Rondo Of Blood offered more precision then the NES trillogy did
      and, although I love how graceful and quick the characters control in the Igavanias, I feel that giving the player so much control over the character took away a lot of the tension the series was known for, as the player's actions felt less consequential. I felt that people did not have to play as deliberately, or carefully because they could easily maneuver out of a rough spot in a pinch. The reason I'd say Rondo had the best controls is because it alleviated a lot of the cheap damage that would occur in the NES trilogy by allowing the player to jump on to and off of stair cases, and they allowed the player to jump up vertically and then opt to move forward in mid air. One can't totally change the trajectory of a jump from forward to backwards, or vice versa, which makes the player commit to the jumping action, but, unlike the NES Trillogy, one can jump conservatively, and then opt to increase the distance in mid air by pressing forward. Ounce I grasped how this mechanic worked, I began to think that Rondo had the most balanced controls of the series. it's a little bit more forgiving, a bit of extra leeway, but it still forces you to consider the risk vs reward of any action, and to commit to that action, and to face the consequences of that choice. From Symphony Of The Night onward, I stopped getting that feeling from Castlevania, but, I still love the Metroidvania style Castlevanias as well.

    • @boogieondatass
      @boogieondatass 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For that matter, I feel similarly about the controls in the Mega Man games for NES verses the Mega Man X series as well. I played through the Mega Man X games super fast, like they were Sonic games, which actually made them fun for entirely different reasons compared to why I loved the NES Mega Man games. I guess, you have to weigh out the pros and cons. Is it better to have controls that force the player to be deliberate, and offer weighty consequences for the player's choice of action, or is it more fun to give the player character enough control, and power that the player can run through the game fast and throw caution to the way side?

    • @SatoshiMatrix1
      @SatoshiMatrix1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I did mention Castlevania, I don't exactly equate it with Ghosts 'n Goblins in terms of awful controls. I've played through Castlevania dozens of times (I even did a VRC6 playthrough on my channel if you wanna look that up) I feel the controls are something you have to learn to live with rather than something to be praised.
      As to stiff controls offering more tension, a lot of people pre-Resident Evil 4 for that argument and again, I think one has to simply tolerate the stiff controls in an otherwise excellent game. I replay RE1-3 every so often, but not nearly as often as I replay 4, and the superior controls are a big reason for that.
      Back to what you were saying about Castlevania, I do agree about Rondo, excpet that I ditch Richter for Maria asap. Maria controls so much better than Richeter it's like night/day. Thankfully the series evolved so the future games controlled like Maria.

    • @boogieondatass
      @boogieondatass 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good Point, I prefer Resident Evil 4 and it's controls by a landslide compared to the earlier entries, although, I feel like, Resident Evil's controls in 1-3 are bad because they are so unintuitive and convoluted. I felt that early Castlevania had intuitive controls, they just made you commit to your actions. Anyway, I'll go check out your playthrough, sounds pretty cool!

    Darn you, Microni- eh I don’t like this one anyway. You know the hall before Death in Castlevania? This is an entire game of that. It’s not rewarding, there’s no skill or thought involved, everything just kills the player. If I were to compare it to the better horror themed action game on the console, Castlevania is brutal as heck that first time, but will reward skilled players with things like the Double and Triple shot, extra lives, secret health pickups, etc. That’s how you make a challenging game fun. This is more akin to being picked up, slapped in the face repeatedly, sat back down, and asked if you had a good time, so I can’t really pretend Micronics is entirely responsible for the overall quality

    As much as I love all the highly detailed historical information, I can't escape the impression that you just really don't like challenging video games and rarely even bother finishing them. That seems like quite the handicap for someone who seems to makes a living (at least in part) by reviewing so many of them. It's disappointing to see the depth and nuance you bring to discussion of a game's development history and context fall away when it comes to gameplay analysis in a case like this. Some games don't call for much in the way of dedicated practice to complete and some do. Both these design philosophies are wholly valid in and of themselves and no, the latter is not simply "hateful," as you so often like to dismiss it. Maybe try an open mind, a calm demeanor, some patience, and actually completing games before weighing in on them. It can only help your finished product. You might even discover some new personal favorites once you actually master some of these "cruel" and "brutal" titles. I know I have.

      Will Mistretta there's an _enourmous_ difference between a challenging game and an unfair game. A challenging game is like having a boxing match against a great boxer, an unfair game is like if your opponent boxer just whips out a gun and shoots you. If all of the challenge comes from the game being poorly designed and poorly developed instead of having an actual challenge, then it's not a good game. That's why games like Dark Souls are really popular, because they're not unfair in the slightest, they're very well designed and made, and so it has an actual challenge to them, you're told the rules and what your abilities are and you just have to practice and eventually you'll get it. With bad unfair games, it doesn't matter how good you get, because you'll always be thrown some BS by the game that is _literally_ impossible to dodge. Even speedrunners of the NES ghost and goblins game, i.e. literally the best players in the world at this game, get hit and die constantly, and so are always having to restart runs.
      And Jeremy has played and beaten literally dozens and dozens of very hard games so your attack is really bizarre and out of left field.
