      Its not dei, that the issue (never has been) its the fact that companies are hiring overseas workers because its cheaper and they have less rule they have the adhere to when taking advantage of those employees. Why pay someone in the states a decent good salary when you could pay someone in india a fraction of that and have to provide less benefits ​@@emaldon7

    Just because someone is saying that they are hiring. Does not mean that they are hiring.
    Some companies have the same posting 5 or 6 times.

      Some companies only post that they are hiring, but only hire within or have someone else in mind for the position. “Posting” the job is just the HR/Logistics side of it.

      And some jobs aren’t actually jobs they’re hiring for. They are putting feelers out for the future in case they have openings, or to encourage overworked employees that they will be getting assistance from a new hire.

      It's not sad and it's not recent. This is nothing new. Business is about who you know more than your qualifications. This just isn't being taught. Why do you think people still do networking events? This is exactly why college is a scam. The younger generations have been lied to about how your degree is all you need to get a job. The degree is possibly the first step if you even need it at all. At the company I work at now, interviewees are brought in by word of mouth because we trust each other more than some random applicant who could mess up the work dynamic. We have to run like a well-oiled machine and don't care to risk a block in the gears. Connections are vital in business because business is and always has been about people.

    Ken’s completely correct.
    I’ve seen soooooo many people get jobs they were either not qualified for, or with no prior experience - pushed ahead of more qualified individuals; simply based on their connections.
    It’s not always about what you know, it’s who you know.

      I’ve seen way more people get promoted because they were smart, capable workers than I have because they were “friends”. If you were a manager, who would you rather have working in your department, your friends, or experienced employees with a proven track record? You’d choose the latter. And most managers are just like you.

      Jobs don’t always automatically throw out promotions, bonuses or raises. You have to ask, be loud, or whatever other action needed to be noticed.
      Cause the guy who does all the work, but just sits in a cubicle not speaking to anyone for 98% of their shift, is gonna get forgotten

    Ken is correct but bringing up the number of job listings isn’t helpful cause there’s a lot of jobs posted that the company has no interest in actually filling them. There’s also a fair amount of scam jobs.

Maybe pre covid she can land a job as an inexperienced developer, but now so many senior/experienced developers are also in the market. And also like you said, many jobs are fake. Company post fake jobs to boost confidence.

      The point is there is some amount of actual real job opportunities that employers are seeking qualified people to hire for. Maybe 977 is not the real figure, but if it's only 10% of those that are real that's still nearly a hundred jobs which the caller could be qualified for, and she just needs to connect to the one making the hiring decision.

    I think this is unfair. I'm GenX. I know how to work the relational game. I recently went through applying for dozens of jobs that I was perfectly suited for -- as in EXACTLY the level and type of experience they needed and were looking for. I put out the calls to my network, I talked to people, and did all the right things, and I got one interview. ONE. And I didn't get the job. My husband works for a very well known company that has forbidden its employees from recommending individuals for jobs. People have been reprimanded for passing along resumes in the company. You have to have a resume that is seeded with the right keywords so the AI will 'see' it. A traditional resume no longer works, and traditional networking isn't the answer. So the advice missed the mark, in my opinion.

    As hard as it is sometimes, this is exactly why you don't want to leave your previous company under bad terms. You'll never know how far your managers networking goes within the industry you work in.

      well you really should never leave a job on bad terms if you can help it. there's absolutely no benefit to you to leave badly. even if they were a terrible company and you hated them, still no reason to not just give your 2 weeks and move on. bad business transactions happen, and that's what jobs are. there's no sense in throwing a tantrum over a bad business transaction.

      A former plant manager posted on my National Employment History Report,
      My "new" employer HR called me after offering me the job and said:
      "Due to a derogatory work history report, we are rescinding our offer of employment,
      In compliance with the Fair Credit and Reporting Act, we are sending you
      a written transcript of the derogatory work history report."
      The Plant Manager approved $1.5M payment for the Permit company.
      My due diligence found 4 permits that were NOT obtained.
      Corporate cut his completion bonus by $500K>>>
      slinging snot mad.
      Corporate asked for me to get the 4 permits>>> NOT my job!
      2 weeks' notice.
      He was later Fired for the report,
      I ended up taking a $50K job after 18 months of trying (History report kept Haunting), I was getting $100K + $25K bonus.
      "You'll never know how far your manager's networking goes within the industry you work in."

      I think only once left but a smile, the one I worked eventually for about 15 years went down, we even had a night out paid by the owners and still have a wassap chat to talk shit.
      All but that I got so burn out I would rather go back with a petrol bomb than a resume.

      Also high interest rates prohibit cash strapped companies to borrow money to keep good folks. Good folks soaked the rest of the profitable company positions. No one wants to train anymore hire. They’d rather hire from India someone less skilled.

It's exactly like you said, there is a shortage of experts but there isnt anything close to a shortage of everyone else.

      Entry level developer jobs are not as easy to get anymore. There are a lot more companies that need developers than just “tech”, but that did make an impact on the market.

      @@mununpatel7032 No, modern capitalism and companies over hired because keeping good talent bored at Amazon is better for Amazon than letting Google hire those engineers. Late stage capitalism companies just need skeleton crews to maintain the software, which I think had emboldened companies to fire devs because you don't need a lot of them to keep the systems up and running.

      Never base the job market on big tech layoffs. Always focus on SMB growth, which is what really determines our markets. Yep, those are also the places to look for jobs, because in many mid-sized markets there is a shortage.

    Tech has been in a downturn for the last 5 months. Massive layoffs in the major tech companies like Google, FB, semiconductor, etc. Last number i saw was north of some 210,000 people. She's competing with these newly laid off people with years of experience who are alao looking for new jobs.

This is a common practice on INDEED and CAREER BUILDER! Qualified people don't always get hired, even with networking.

      There is a shortage of skilled developers. There is a huge demand for skilled developers. There are thousands of unskilled developers that apply for everything, making hiring extremely difficult.

      I blame coding bootcamps that make naive inexperienced people think they can land a 60-80k a year job after 6 months of learning development. It can be done if you already have incredible discipline and communication skills, but 95% of the people who do these bootcamps don’t have either.

    They're wrong about the search results. Out of 900 results only 100-300 roles are truly available and the pool of candidates is so high that your chances of employment are very low for many applicants. It's not as cut and dry as they make it seem.

    My husband was laid off end of August of 2023. Every day he applied for 5-10 jobs and had many interviews but no luck on landing the job. He just said to me that you just need to keep applying and eventually you will gain interview skills and someone will give you a chance. He eventually found a job in Nov of 2023. Sometimes it does depend on who you know, but sometimes you just have to keep applying.

    A year out before graduating with my Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering, I shot out as many applications as possible and got a job months before graduating. You don't necessarily need someone inside but it does help. Dont quit, just keep applying.

      I agreed. Also, don't be embarrassed or afraid to apply for Walmart, target, movie theaters, warehouses, fast foods, janitors, and hotels. Ect. It's okay getting pay less than the amount you want for now. You can also keep applying for a position with your degree on the days that you're off. I have a coworker who is 50 and just recently got hired with me at Regal Moveie Theaters. It's never impossible. Even people who came out from 10 years in jail will get a job. You just gotta keep going. I know the struggle. It's hard when It's months, and you feel like you're trying your hardest. The question is, are you, though? I had to tell myself that, and I decided to wake up every day and apply for whatever I could find. I even had to bother the managers multiple times at the same jobs that I applied for. It's possible.

      Yup it’s definitely just a blessing that one gets picked for the job out of hundreds of applicants. My nephews and nieces find jobs so quickly idk how they they even do it when they job hop like crazy. I’ve only had two jobs and they were from word of mouth or just calling in about my application.

But I just moved to this state and needed a quick job and wanted experience in customer service so I just took the job. Low pay and a bit stressful but I’m so grateful I’m getting experience. Besides I won’t be here forever it’s all for the experience!

    I have 4 and a half years of experience as a software engineer. I got laid off last year and it took 5 months and a depleted savings to get hired. The kicker is out of the many hundreds of applications I sent out, I only got offers from the people from my network, heck I accepted a job back at a previous company. I was rehired because they already knew how I worked and onboarding wouldn't be an issue.
    It's a tough market out there.

    I don’t agree with Dave on this. I am a US veteran and going through the same thing. I’ve been unemployed for the last 5 months and asked at least 20 people that have networks to help me. Still have had no luck. So people are not just going to help you because you are you.

      I'm not so sure about your last comment. I frequent a cigar lounge and have recently became acquaintances with a another regular and today he asked what I was going to school for. As it turns out he happens to be a hiring manager in the same industry I go to school for and told me when I'm ready to apply for a gig to let him know. So it happens.

      Except you don’t, sure it helps but that’s not a requirement to get a good job. I haven’t known anyone at either of my full time jobs post college graduation. A lot of people have poorly written resumes and poor interview skills but no one likes to admit this about themselves

      I got my first job as a temp. Didn’t know a darn soul, making $16 through an agency. Eventually I got hired on. Then made supervisor. Then manager. Now director. Didn’t have any previous “connections” just met people on the job and impressed them with a little thing called work ethic. You don’t need to “network” you need to be a solid dependable employee.

    When my husband and I moved states last year, 3 months before we moved he applied online to every job and we wrote down each one. Not one set up an interview with him. 2 months before we moved he went for 1 week and reached out to each job that he will be there in person that week. He got 2 interviews set. While there he went with resume in hand to 6 places. He got an interview at all 6 and 4 same day job offers. Who you know can help but IN PERSON STILL MATTERS. My husband has a wonderful job that he loves because he was there in person. Bad advice

    Most of the time, the companies are required to display these jobs publicaly but it is 90% internal hire. HR is required to select at minmum five people to interview but most of the time we already know who we going to hire before we already interview the other four. Really need to work out your network game if you want to get hired in a good paying job that is not entry level.

      I agree, It's one things when they have to give someone tough love, but she wasn't even able to finish her sentence! Also developer jobs are not that easy to find right now. I know several people who are getting laid off or have been actively looking for developer jobs, even getting interviews, but the competition is so steep that they just can't find a good job.

    I'm in the same boat as Erica. I would highly suggest going to career fairs all around town. Doesn't matter if it's in your field, like Ken said, there may be someone there who knows someone else who will then pass your resume. That happened to me in a construction company the other day. I am in HR, went to a career fair highing construction workers. The man who was hiring, his daughter is a HR director at a different company. I wasn't hired, but she was nice enough to call me and put me in contact with other people. Apply online at night, but during the day hit career fairs. ALL OF THEM! Wishing you luck, Erica!

      Yes, the skilled trades are often over-looked. High schools and colleges push 4 year degrees. Going to trade school is often looked down upon. I went to a civilian aviation trade school. Worked for a major airline until it went out of business. I was able to use my mechanical and electrical skills towards repairing passenger trains. Excellent pay and benefits, including a generous pension. I made $110k without over time. With over time some techs are pulling in $140k to $180k.

    I'm a SW engineer at a major company, Dave is wrong about one thing here: You don't need personal connections to get an interview. You need a good resume with real work experience. Her real mistake was graduating with no real experience in programming. You have to work internships in industry or have impressive personal projects. If you have a good resume you will get interviews.
    There definitely is an oversaturation of junior devs right now, but a lot of them don't have experience and really aren't competent enough for a junior dev role. If you really like coding and build your own app, or get an internship at a good company, you will be able to find a job. It's sad but it is what it is. People act like you can just do a bootcamp and be ready to make 6 figures but it's total BS

      That's a rough place to be in though if a degree is no longer considered enough to be hired as a junior developer. I mean that's the whole point of college right, to get experience so you can be admitted into the industry. Having to go through college and also work internships at the same time is frankly asking too much, even if people have done it before.
      I mean I get it. I'm a CS student right now too, and half the people in these classes don't know what a linked list is. But I guess that's another discussion alltogether, as is whether or not requiring a degree is even ethical in the first place for stuff like this...

Every job out there now requires a 4 year degree. You cannot compete if you don't have one, much less even apply most of the time. And now they want you to do more on top of waste 4 years of your life? It's not acceptable.
      Sure, maybe you know lots of people without degrees, but I assume they're all older? Back then it was possible to get a job that way, not anymore. At least not in the Western world from what I can tell.
      Hell, I'm not even in CS for a CS job. I'm trying to become a cargo pilot for crying out loud. But even they demand "any" 4 year degree.
      Just imagine all the time I could spend flying right now getting experience instead of losing 4 years attending some college for some degree I'll hopefully never use... Now imagine the same for a CS student who will spend half of those 4 years in "general education" classes reading Hamlet for the 5th time lmao

    Networking is a must… Also, most larger companies/corporations are using a computer program to chisel sift through applications/resumes before it ever reaches a human being…. Using the exact keywords that are in the job description/job requirements is a common thing the computer picks out… I know my company does that. I’ve heard of people copying the entire job description and pasting it in white ink in the online resume they submit….

    You can get a job but it'll take much much longer if you don't have a connection. I played video games in my free time during college, never took internships, never socialized with anyone, worked a gardening job. I ended up getting a dev job 1 year after graduating. It really isn't impossible to get a job, it's just a lot harder.

    For my current job when I applied 6 years ago. My boss had resume burn out and just threw mine to the garbage without looking at it. She had already seen many that day. However the HR lady that was with her noticed and was like hold up you didn’t even look at that one. And long behold I got the interview and been working for them 6 years. And have moved up a couple of times. When they brought up the study from 2021 I felt that. Cause if it wasn’t by the grace of God I would of been overlooked and been part of the statistic

    This is so true. I graduated nursing school in 2010. Applied everywhere. The only reason I got hired at my first job was because a mom of a girl I used to hang out with in grade school worked there and called HR frequently until I got an interview. For my second nursing job, I knew someone working on the floor I wanted to work and she put in a good word for me.

I reached out to my past jobs leadership and asked for connections and flew out and walked into companies I was interested in and talking to people.     I'm hearing the opposite about developer positions. I know developers who've been unable to find jobs for months. Ramsey even said in this video that there were 15,000 applications to his company and they only hired 176. Maybe Ramsey solutions is a great company to work for, resulting with those applications, but that is an indicator that there is plenty of demand for jobs right now.

    I am a private music teacher who has been teaching for over 30 years - I know a lot of people. I am constantly networking people I know even though I may know nothing about their employment field. I often match up folks for jobs or housing. People are frequently asking me, “Do you know anyone who …” and just keep it in mind. Don’t limit yourself to talking only to people in your field. Your friends know lots of people - some of whom can help. Just keep going!!

      social anxiety comes from lack of practice and introversion doesn't prevent you from getting out to get a job. It is essential to correct these traits as early in life as you can because as a member of human society, communication is your #1 asset.
      My son was terrified by phone calls and having to talk to people. I made him practice and forced him to do it.
      Started with ordering a pizza through phone rather than an app. It's tough at first but it makes all the difference.

    In tech in Atlanta the best option is to use a contract to perm company, it is much easier to get through the AI's they use than the big companies. Also every tech company the AI will automatically discard the resume that has grammatical, spelling, or formatting errors.

    The first job is not usually your dream job.
    I failed 9 applications before finally finding work. It's not an industry I imagined I'd be in, but I found my way around and got new roles every few years or so.
    The caller can set six-month or yearly checkpoints as to whether stay at whatever job she lands or find new work. Between now and then, she gotta roll em up sleeves and do work that she doesn't like.

    30 years in IT, I just spent about 5 months and found nothing at all. Ended up going back to the place I left and now I am going to leave again because its not a match and I dont even expect to find anything for many months. Its weirdly tight on the market now, but its similar to early 2000s for tech, so this isnt super unusual.

    11:50 Dave nailed it. Happens internally too. One of the two people that interviewed me had encouraged me to apply for the role. He and the hiring manager fawned over me in the interview "we were hoping youd apply, so happy you did". They said 2-3 weeks for a decision. Nothing for almy4 months and it was an app i don't use often was the excuse, despite others being hired who don't. I had already learned they hired people months prior and the excuse for the late reply was general life busy stuff. Yeah..

    I wasn’t out of a job for months but I know how difficult it can be. I literally can’t imagine looking for a job for months. I got extremely lucky because I met with recruiters who liked me, had openings, and were able to talk to the hiring manager. I’m not a huge fan of this and they show their age because it’s difficult to meet people in that field without having done leg work prior, or having settings to do it like a networking event. You need to know someone but getting there is difficult and unless you’re doing it, you don’t know how hard it is.

    Honestly recruiters are so helpful… they’ll take 25% of your pay as long as you’re a temp, but they will get you hired

      That is incorrect about how recruiters are paid, it's troubling this idea still circulates.
      External recruiter/staffing firms are vendors like the company you lease copier machines from, contract to clean facilities, refill vending machines - so they are paid from business ops funds NOT portions of the person hired's salary.

    Its easy for people like them who have jobs to say things like that. Making connections and knowing people is such an unfair way to get a job. The education system is all about getting good grades and doesn't reward the "connections" part, resulting in the situation in this call. This ends up in companies not hiring the most qualified person in the stack of applications. Also, I hate how Ken and Dave talk down to her. They've just been luckier. I guarantee Erica worked just as hard, if not harder than the people who work at the Ramsay show (as well as attempt to make connections).
    Luckily, I work in a field where I got my jobs through work and practice (not connections).

      Idk, maybe it depends on your school and your major. My college did a wonderful job of setting up career fairs and many of the student chapters of industry-specific societies would have prospective employers drop by weekly or monthly to interview graduating students. It was very hard not to get internships and graduate with a job. This was civil engineering.

    Tip - If you apply to one place and they don't respond, apply again and again. It works. It gets their attention and sometimes they will interview you. It worked for me.

    I took an unpaid internship with a professional engineering society. The society had an engineering convention. Before this, I had applied to companies for internships, but once I got to the conference, showed them the exact same resume, the same companies that rejected me offered me internships on the spot. I used that experience to intern at NASA and then I used my NASA experience to intern at SpaceX. When I applied for full-time jobs last year before I graduated, I just applied online without knowing people and had 10 job offers lined up because at this point I had enough experience to be competitive. The first part is the hardest (getting that first opportunity). You have to convince someone to take a chance on you, and having a connection/network helps you achieve that first step.

    It's frustrating when someone tells me they are looking for work and when I ask them what they are doing to look for work and all they have to say is they are applying on LinkedIn or indeed. They aren't calling, following up, being a little annoying, or at least TRYING to get someone to talk to them.
    Even if a company says to not call them, give at least a single phone call just to get some attention. What's the worst they can do? Fire you?

    Now retired, looking back, my career job was obtained by doing "volunteer work" for the people that eventually hired me. I had a degree, a military background, spoke a second language, won competitions, and so on, but what got me the job, was doing volunteer work. It gave me a personal connection to the hiring entity. All the other credentials were just extra fluff. Who knew.

    Ken is saying be on the look out for job fairs, community education classes, company sponsored events, etc. to get to know people in your chosen industry. Maybe reach out to old classmates or professors. It’s about opening the viewpoint to the world instead of keeping it narrow by singular applications. While you are building up your notoriety in the community, work somewhere that either helps you gain experience in your field or something totally unrelated that pays the bills. Either way all you can go is forward!

    If there are two fields where you don't need to know anyone to get in, it's healthcare and education. I worked in tech, and switched to education easily without knowing anyone. I now have better pay, better job security, and the best benefits I ever had.

    10:47 companies do that too.. often after the final interview you never hear from them again. Even worse… I’ve gotten an offer and been ghosted before. I inquired about confirming the first day and logistics and they never responded…. Awful. It goes both ways, lots of companies aren’t loyal or professional either.

    Ken is right. I usually disagree with him. My job only has 8 spots with my job title. we have people come and go like any job. The first thing my manager ask before looking at applications... do any of you know anyone who needs a job? granted they gotta go through HR and have some basic requirements met, but that candidate will get an interview as long as HR says we can.

      The reason they ask if you “know someone who needs a job” is because if you know them, they are a known commodity with a proven track record, instead of some random off the street who could be lying on their resume. People act like “connections” means some random guy you went to college with, but it means previous coworkers you’ve worked with and can vouch for the quality of their work

      When I was a full-time college student, I also held down two jobs (refused to take out student loans). One job was working as an assistant to the college’s evening program (night school) secretary, supporting the evening staff. I did a lot of running for these folks, taking care of whatever they needed. On weekends, I worked for a major department store, in the customer service department. I was on my feet at least 8 to 10 hours a day, often staying late to lock up the safe and close down the department. My supervisor secretary at my other job was desperate to earn some extra money, so asked if I could put in a good work. Sure, she was a likeable person, but she also had power over my ability to keep my job at the college. I put in a good word for her, as she was actually a good worker; however, I sadly discovered she was a good worker if it meant she could sit around to do her job. She was the WORST worker in the department…..no pep to her step and very poor, bordering on indifferent, customer service abilities. I was surprised, as our jobs at the college was taking care of the part-time professor’s requests for materials and resources. She explained it to me, “The college office job is easy, low key, and the professors are educated and civil. The customers we deal with at the store are uneducated financial imbeciles just off the street.” I was shocked at her attitude. I felt great pride when I was able to work with a customer to straighten out their credit and establish a workable repayment plan, whether they were rich or just scraping by. I also discovered that more ‘educated’ and wealthier folks tend to have the largest insurmountable debt problems. Our priorities, and attitudes towards our fellow man, were clearly mismatched. I apologized to my boss for unleashing this sloth upon our department. She quit this “exhausting weekend job” in less than a month. I left the college office job a few months later, taking a better paying job; however, I continued to work the customer service job for an additional year, as I discovered I was really good at explaining to folks how their credit cards worked, how to avoid late fees, and always pay more than the minimum payment. I couldn’t stop them from opening an account, but I could help them overcome the consequences of their decision.

    Can confirm. Once I started cold reaching out to people, emailing and messaging on LinkedIn, and getting referrals, I started getting interviews. Cold applying to big companies doesn’t work anymore.

    Dave never knows what he's talking about. There is no shortage of developers. Remember when saying "Learn to code" was hate speech? Well, guess what...everyone learned to code. The market is saturated with developers and coders. Despite it being a high-level skill, they are a dime a dozen and it is driving wages down.

If you plan to live on your own no way that is enough for 1 person, forget about having a family and or a house. No way 40k is good income in any state!!

      @@SSusannah it’s hard to make 400k unless you are a doctor or doing amazing in sales, or etc. however average people in my opinion can live a normal life if they make 70-100k that is achievable with hard work and experience. Above 6 figures is better of course but it bring more stress and less time with family.
      For example a recent nurse grad in nj makes 80k. Very decent income. Architect recent grad makes 65k which is ok but not as much as nurse. These are 2 different fields ok? So you have to like what you do. The architect might hate what the nurse daily tasks are and prefers to sit and draw on the computer all day and that’s what brings him/her pleasure satisfaction in their work. Same with the nurse she might dislike sitting on the computer all day looking at the screen and be bored. It’s is not the right career for her/him. So choosing wisely a field that is right for you personally is very important. Also never go and study something that has no job listings not in demand field. It will be waste of time and money. Like people getting degrees in Sociology, History, art history, and etc.
      also depending where you live is very important. Architect in rural Montana will not make the salary he/ she can make in Manhattan, Chicago or the urban areas why… because construction services are more in demand in urban areas.

    So true! I work at a big hospital in the Coding department and have connections. Met a girl in the breakroom, and she expressed an interest in Coding. Got her name and email and sent her job openings, and told her I would connect her with leadership. Never heard back. She missed an opportunity to move up from the mail room.

    I used to help my junior all the time and taught him some coding skills.
    We eventually lost contact because we moved companies the last 6 years.
    Last year I got sick of my workplace and started to look for other companies but it was CRICKETS.
    And I have 10 years experience and up-to-date skills.
    My junior contacted me on my birthday and by chance I mentioned to him how hard it was to look for a job by just submitting resumes.
    He didn't need to ask me about anything except for my resume. He referred me to their hiring manager that same night.
    And now we're coworkers and I got a 61% increase (relative to my previous job).

    I was recently part of a hiring committee. We had over 80 applicants and only 20ish people even made it to the committee review because the others didn't include all the required documentation (resume, cover letter, etc). Automatically thrown out.

    This was so refreshing to hear. This was me 7 years ago. Must have applied to over 200 positions all over the country but only got called in to a like 3 interviews. It took a connection through family friend that I finally was able to get my foot through the door in an entry level position. I was giving up hope and thought it was all due to being an immigrant. Its really important to speak the truth and let people know that they are not crazy but that the system is mostly who you know.

    I saw a video just the other day of a young black man that was laid off in IT/Tech field and could not find a job again. He had a young family and needed a job now!! He made a BIG sign with colorful letters on it saying basically "Laid off, need job for young family, have BA and Masters, want resume??". He stood out in a SUIT and tie with sign at a very busy intersection like a pan handler but handed out his resume to anybody that asked for one.
    He had numerous offers to choose from in no time!! He was a go getter!! Try it!!

    Most of my jobs came from who I knew.
    Berry picking was my first job through my mother. I did bean picking because the berry farmer was related to the bean farmer. I later got a job pumping gas, because I got to to know a manager. I repaired a lawn mower for a lady and found another job. Then I heard a construction company needed help.
    It goes on and on. I gained work experience in a number of areas until I landed a job in facility maintenance for 12 years and I got that job, because I knew someone at a skating rink where I worked as a side job.
    My needs have been met and now I'm retired.

    Biggest question that wasnt asked, is why is she moving to Atlantia, from where she currently lives. Why move if she's not making enough money, change employer and stay put for a year or 2 more make more money, develop connections within Atlantia if thats her desired destination workwise. But how is moving to a new location, with no connections as she said, and no job a good thing. Hows she going to afford the move and how is she going get a place to stay and pay rent or food etc. It sounds all off to me. If shes struggling where she is how is moving going to help.

    She should try defense industry and government jobs since unlike the FAANG jobs they are still recruiting. They can also take in people who are permanent residents and will pull from people with physics degrees... she can do either programming work or engineering work as well, and will likely receive on-the-job training. I entered with a math degree.

    The first job after school is the hardest to get. No connections, no direction on niches within certain industries. It took me 800 resumes over 6 months until I got my first engineering job. Applying for jobs was a full time job, everyday all day and then worked at night. I stayed with the same company and worked my way up from entry level to Director. Determination and persistence. Don't give up and stop questioning your degree. Go get it

      It took me over 500 job applications and 50 interviews the first time. The next time I improved my resume and sent out only 55 job applications and had 25 interviews. I have talked to friends and order people and they don’t understand at all. They only do 2 interviews and get hired. I think it’s just my job field in information technology. Other job fields aren’t like this. If I had known this I would have never gone into this. Worse part is they also select the extroverted people over me even if they have less skills. Just screw them they hiring managers are out of touch.

    I have taught private piano for over 30 years. In the 'old' days when people quit or 'took a break' they had to look me in the eye or call me on the phone to tell me. Now, I get texts to tell me or, rarely, ghost me. Technology is encouraging cowardness. It's preventing people from personal growth. I feel disrespected when people treat me with a text. I am a quality teacher, but, I'm not treated with quality.

    I'm 57, laid-off on Jan. 8, 2024. In 3 months I have had a total of 3 interviews in person and one virtual harassment (ageism was expressed openly - I refuse to call that a job interview, it was too insulting coming from a punk who is young enough to be my child). No one will hire me. Had to sell my new car and buy a 25 yr old hoopty, am about to sell my condo, but when i do, I won;t be able to afford anything int he state of insanity I live in (CA). So what the hell do I do? I have no support system, and no one will hire me when in 5 years I can take early social security (even though I planned on working until i was 70). 57 and nothng to show for a lifetime career, ruined over a woke girl's inability to take criticism when she was doing something wrong, claiming I was harassing her.

    I've applied for over 700 jobs. Finally got an offer only to wake up yesterday to a third party telling me it was rescinded with no explanation. It is so much worse out here than people know. I have experience in the field, advanced licenses...everything
    Retail and fast food are saying Im overqualified. Ive had to move 5 times in one year because I have nowhere to stay which makes it even harder because jobs want to know where you live. The offer I got wasn't even enough to cover rent with roomates anyways so I'm not super bummed but just don't know what to do
