Pretty awesome man. I did something similar a month or two ago. I got an old record player and ripped the guts out also and rebuilt it using Spanish cedar and ebony and gave it to my son. I was pretty proud of the way it turned out,but the best part was that it actually worked. No electronics were harmed.
How about the thermal conductivity of the wood? :D It needs a cooling system other wise, soon the PC will not work anymore and your wife will kick you out of the house. :) Have a good day. It is an amazing craft work. Loved it and envy!
I really love your way of story telling which doesn't just focus on a fnished and polished end result but rather also emphasizes the struggles and challenges in between. I also really dig the honest insights you give of your inner thoughts which is very rare for creators. Every single one of your videos is a true joy to watch ⭐
you are so right about running out of problems to solve and the project becoming work.... That's part of my works too that i had never identified until you said it...
Fiskmas: I love the extra capabilities that having a 3d printer gives me. It has given me a whole new raft of problems to solve. Seeing your application in the woodshop, also gives me more problems to solve and I thank you.
The "boring part" can also become the "flow working part". Just think of it as the point where your skills to date get put into use with your muscle memory because you are good at it. Enjoyed the vid, and it looks beautiful. Nice looking workspace for the Mrs.
Fiskmas: Your struggle with finishing projects with the same excitement that you started felt like you were speaking directly to me. I'm going to try your "brain hack" of telling yourself that the boring stuff will come, and it just has to be done. I LOVE the walnut enclosure. You did an amazing job. Going to try something like this in the future for sure. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'm so curious what the thermals look like on this thing under sustained load. One of the design elements of Macs is that the aluminum bodies act as giant heat sinks and radiators, dispersing heat unexpectedly efficiently away from the electronic components.
Mate! Project fatigue is real! You are most definitely NOT alone. Having the deadline of birthday wouldn't give you time to split time across other projects, either, which is how I manage my "neurospicy" project fatigue.
Great video! One tip for when you are testing the fitment of the powerbutton, is to just print the part of the bracket where the button mounts to, to save a lot of print time! Love from Norway
Fiskmas great video Pierre. I really love your creativity and your ability to solve problems. I like the way you use 3D printing to help you solve those problems and show how valuable it is in the workshop, Plus the Mac Mini looks great
Fiskmås cool project! I've been trying with making custom wood enclosures for some of things, so with this video, I think you've pushed me into action 😊
Thank you for showing the messy room at the start! Have one of those rooms and it takes ages to get it done! I’m slightly less embarrassed now, even though there’s nothing to be ashamed about! Life takes time sometimes! 😁
Well done man. I get the same feeling in some projects that even if it’s new and I’m learning, it’s dragging and I just want it done. Just gotta focus on the smallest next immediate step for me, and it helps.
He can sell it and it would be legal. There was a business called Modbook that modified and sold MacBooks, they went down because they miss managed their money but they never faced any legal issues cause the first purchase makes this no different than selling your used items
Fiskmas! Love you videos! That’s a planer. Puts my dewalt to shame. The Mac is really cool! I like the way you are always solving problems with your builds. Glad to know mine aren’t the only projects that go that way! 🤪
So I like the idea of the e7q I've tried a lot of sit stand desks and they always have wobble. That desk looks like it solves that problem. I appreciate what you did with the mac mini especially since I know myself and my solution would have been veneer.
Fiskmås, Pierre! Project turned out great! Glad to see that Julia is coming around to liking walnut, since you've said before that she only likes lighter colored wood. Now you need to build a wooden mechanical keyboard to go with it.
13:05 set out to make a Mac, accidentally made an old Xbox instead. Looks really good! I need more wood in my home, so a new PC case with wood details was a must. I have an idea for the back panel if you decide to revisit this, or any other project with curved areas. I've printed beer holders that you hang on door handles. It was for my neighbour and I surprised him every now and then. I printed the part flat, but it in a jig that I've made that had a hinge, covered the part that was not supposed to bend and blew a heat gun on it, then bent it, kinda like bending sheet metal. You could print your back panel flat, make a solid block of wood with the bend for it to sit in, heat it up and press a matching piece of wood over it then let it cool.
You did an excellent job mate! For similar projects, my 50c advice: make wooden parts simpler, and print all cradles for components in some tough plastic. No one sees the inside of the case anyway :)
I spotted an old Rolleiflex or Rolleicord in the box with the mac mini. It’s a pretty valuable camera, so you might wanna store it somewhere more safely...
But why the 15:33 monitor with the window behind? You cannot open the window and it is quite annoying the light from outside in sunny days (do you have sunny days in Sweden?) ..
Very cool techniques. As for your comment on the 'project fatigue', I can relate to this very much. For me it is related to my ADHD, you tend to visualize the whole project in your head already, after which your brain feels as if it has done the entire project already and has to do it a second time, but you started it now, so you force yourself to end the project as well, which causes you to feel tired by a project you feel like you've already completed and there are multiple projects in your head already that seem way more excited (because novelty releases dopamine, which people with ADHD lack). There isn't really a fix that I know of, except that I sometimes work on two (and ONLY two) projects at the same time so that when one is starting to feel boring I can 'procrastinate' by doing the other project until my brain gets excited enough to work on the first one. Not trying to diagnose you with anything, just giving tips since some tactics are useful for all flavors of humans.
I love this project. The only thing I would change is turninf the monitor 90 degrees to the window. Bright light through the window can create monitor viewing problems and possibly cataracts in the eyes.
You good? I thought usually you don't smile or scream of excitement when getting something to work and here you at least 2 or 3 times really bursted out with emotions :P Very cool idea and nicely done.
Great video! Tnx! Yea I recognise myself in wanting to derail from a project when I discover something new and eggzigthing. But this is where your Self-discipline comes into play, at least in theory 😀 .
I love it! I think it would have been a nice touch to throw some LEDs behind the logo so it lights up when you turn the computer on. Another option would be to engrave your logo into some polished brass.
Really liked this video. The wooden pc is a great upgrade to the Mac. One question though, are you worried at all about needing some type of venting. If you did could it be on the bottom. Please, this is in no way meant in a bad way, as this makes it wanting to be seen, it is really nice looking and your logo is cool.
thanks! there is some ventilation in the back panel - the fan points to the back panel where it goes out. Initially the plan was to carve small vent holes on the sides as well - but I never went through with it because of looks. But I will have to see over time what happens
En Macs aluminiumchassi är en del av kylningen av datorns komponenter. Har du kompletterat kylningen på annat vis? I övrigt så blev det så fint. A Mac's aluminum chassis is part of the cooling system for the computer's components. Have you supplemented the cooling in another way? Other than that, it turned out so nice.
yea I use a 2012 mac mini, slapped 16 gigs in there and a SSD, works great (its not my main machine but its my shop PC so it actually gets used almost as much) The downside is intel graphcis, and Mac OS stopped support at like 10.15 ...
Right! They´re really good. There is a thing you can do to upgrade the OS further but there are some risks involved and usually not everything works after wards - but I might try it out. It's not Apple supported though - but it seems to work
Cool computer! Project fatigue is real. I am a computer scientist. And when I was learning computing, I had all kind of projects. I didn't finish most of them for the reason you described. Eventually I have solved all the problem to make the project happen. And the only remaining thing is to sustain effort. And that point the project wasn't quite as interesting anymore. To fight that, what I try to do these days (in both woodworking and in computer working) is that I try to have no project that can't be delivered in more than 6 days of work. Ideally 2 or 4. That way, I can do them in less than 3 week ends and be done. Since the time frame is shorter it is less likely that boredom will setup. If I have larger project, I try to cut in stages that are useful on their own. And each stage should be no more than 6 days of work. This way I can do the first stage, have a useful thing and shelve the upgrades for later if I don't want to get on it at the moment.
15:25 Ah, the mythical European wall radiator! I have never seen one in real life but it must be magical xD I do also run into the issue of difficulty finishing projects once the fun creative and challenging parts are over and it's just work left.... it is quite the struggle
As a creative, I constantly suffer from wanting to drop a project and start a new one. I’ve started laser focusing on projects, just doing nothing but that, so I can finish by sheer momentum before I get the drive to stop and start something else. But it’s been a problem with my Kickstarter TTRPG. It got well past the part where it’s ‘fun’ and has been dragging for years.
Since it's not for sale it really shouldn't matter if you put the Apple logo on there but all these big companies think that they can just use the copyright system to do whatever they want so I don't blame you.
You've made your own bigger case, but didn't add a better ventilation? Why? At least some additional holes would make a nice improvement to temps of your old ew mac
Its been a while since I've heard that apple chime. The fact it has changed took me back to sneaking downstairs to play diablo on the computer when i had been banned.
If you wanted to give it a new look why didn't you just make veneer out of the walnut? By the way, the aluminium might help with heat dissipation (I'm not sure).
I have one of the i7 2012 mac mini's in my shop, it never gets turned off and I have seen the air temp reach 109 (or 43c) out there. Fun thing is nothing in the computer actually contacts the aluminum body to act as a heat sink, its all handled by that little fan he almost murdered at the beginning. Now here in Tennessee, which in the southeast USA and on the 35th parallel along with our "greatest friends" in the middle east, south Korea and Japan ... During August the case will heat soak and start to radiate , and it will start thermal throttling ... but still works fine. So in Sweden in a house, its fine!
agree! Im pretty sure about it. The fan still works thank god and it seems to blow air out the back as it should and from my monitoring it's been nothing worrying at all.
FISKMAS (what does that mean?) Truly lovely video , you do take great care of your dear wife. Heat was also my issue however if you say it’s OK then it’s OK. There were a few things that I intended to bring up but by the time I reached the end they just didn’t matter. Kindest Bob England

I love all of the uses of 3D printing for jigs and alignment. Shows what a valuable tool it really can be.
Agree!
WOW. A The Swedish Maker and @stevebellcreates video within an hour. Great, now I'm running late. Love you guys and your podcast!

Awesome work, as always, Pierre!! Thanks for sharing!
Fiskmås, your videos are so enjoyable and well made. Thank you for your effort!
Very pretty, just wondering if it didn't need a bigger fan to cool the cpu now that the case doesn't transfer heat as well as the aluminium one.
Looks really nice, must be good to see a new frame or stand maked out of wood for the monitor .
Beautiful... but I wonder whether you'll face significant performance throttling due to the new thermal properties of the enclosure.
But why the 15:33 monitor with the window behind? You cannot open the window and it is quite annoying the light from outside in sunny days (do you have sunny days in Sweden?) ..

thank you! I've been getting more relaxed with showing myself on camera lately and those moments are few - but it's nice to get it on camera :)
Hey! You should update the description to include links to those radius gauges. Please and thank you.
100% the same always moving on before the last one is down especially if some gets complicated of needs more finance
Cool project, I hope she appreciates it. Also, I hope you put new thermal paste on the processor
Very cool, how's it holding up in regard to heat retention being that its wood ?
What a beautiful upgrade. Bravo. Thierry from France
Thanks Thierry!
Great project. A light at the back of your logo would make the difference. Thanks for sharing.
Very cool. You could “wood” the monitor next. 🤷🏼♂️😁
not a bad idea :) thanks
That’s beautiful well done
Hearing about those radius gauges was worth the whole video. Up till now I've just been guessing and tweaking!
Fiskmås. Fun project! Nice that you finished it, and nice to see your wife likes it.
Nice use of the 3d printer to create a piece to reference from. I feel the same at the end of projects, just want to start the next one!
Thanks! It's a bit of a pain to go through at the end of every project
If you made the lamp at 4:58 it's beautiful. I would like to see more videos about simple lamps like that one.
Here you go sir: th-cam.com/video/7vO1wSKONZA/w-d-xo.html

Looks amazing great job and Happy Birthday to your wife 🎊🎉🎂
thanks and she says thanks :)
Great build. I totally get the same doldrums late in a project from time to time as my brain drifts to the next thing. You aren't alone in that.
I love it!
I think it would have been a nice touch to throw some LEDs behind the logo so it lights up when you turn the computer on. Another option would be to engrave your logo into some polished brass.

tack kompis! Observant är du! 😃

Well Done Sir!
That Looks Slick as Hell
Hä? You changed the Harddisk with a new SSD and when you start the Mac at 16:00 for its first time, how did the OS came on the new SSD?
What is the blue tray you are using?
Another great video! And story.
Super nice, like who the wallpaper works with the color of the trim
thanks!

Fiskmås! Love these kids of projects.
So sad to see that such a lovely colour bike is needing a new paint job so soon 😰 best of luck!
i'm curious about the digital subscriber counter in the background..?
Coolt och snyggt🤩 Grymt projekt, bra jobbat! 😃👍🏼
Hade blivit extra pluspoäng om du hade använt virke från ett äppelträd istället 🤓😂
att jag inte tänkte på det 😂 tack!
that e7q would look great with a walnut and black epoxy table top
Fiskmas? Seagulls? Fun video, always enjoy seeing problem solving in action.
Fiskmas lol your editing is incredible. And great job on the computer!
thanks! And you're in the observant club!
try putting magnets on the back so u can remove it faster and not worry about striping out the wood.
You've made your own bigger case, but didn't add a better ventilation? Why? At least some additional holes would make a nice improvement to temps of your old

Awesome job!!
This is simply amazing 😍
Thanks buddy 🙏😍 See you soon!
