- I had an old stratocaster body that the previous owner started sanding. I've always wanted a flat fed finish guitar and so I decided to see how cheaply one can paint a guitar body. A spray can of Rust-Oleum 2X Paint and Primer and a can of Rust-Oleum 2X Clear coat later... I have a painted guitar body. What do you think? How does a $10 spray paint job look to you?

Yes, enamel is not the best. Yes, the clear stays soft for months. Who cares for $30?
My advice would be to go with lacquer paints and clear coats. They chemically bond, so you can apply additional coats whenever you want, from 10 min or 10 days.
Last bit of advice, wear rubber gloves. Fingerprints have oils in them and can eff up a good finish.
Lastly, WHO CARES about the vapors on a single project? Let me make this crystal clear. The crap you breathe with diesel engines on the side of the freeway is 100 times worse. If this dude does this every day, then yes, get a respirator. But you get more poison sitting next to a campfire.

Im working on one right now and i dont see the benefit of wasting 40 dollars of good primer, paint and lacquer.

Just a couple tips: if the paint is _enamel_ (which is what Rustoleum is), you _need_ to either spray all your coats within an hour OR wait 24-48 hours (whatever the can says) before scuffing and spraying more. Enamel doesn't "melt in" to previous coats you've sprayed, and you're likely to end up with adhesion issues or paint that never dries right. On the other hand, lacquer is a purely evaporative finish, and you can spray more coats pretty much whenever you want since the solvents will partially re-flow previous coats and make them one homogeneous layer. This is why lacquer is still the most commonly-suggested rattlecan paint for guitars: to do enamels properly is time-consuming and a lot less forgiving, and it can take _months_ to fully dry if it's not done properly. Enamel also doesn't do well when it's built up with a dozen or so coats (which is what you'd need for a glossy finish to be buffed out without burning through), although lacquer doesn't really have that issue.
One more tip: if the can doesn't specific lacquer or enamel, there's an easy way to figure it out: if the instructions say "Recoat within one hour or wait 48 hours", it's enamel. If the label says "May recoat any time", it's lacquer. ReRanch has some great repainting instructions (for lacquer) on their site, I think it's under "Refinishing 101" or something like that.

Actually, the painters touch line is acrylic. This acrylic is designed to emulate enamel though. Good tips.
I’m looking to refinish my tele what which would you recommend? And if using lacquer do you really need a scuff up in between coats? Would that just create scratches?

I'm ready to paint a DIY Bass Guitar with the 2X rustoleum paint. I really like the paint and their nozzles.
I wrote to rustoleum to verify that their clear coat was compatible with the 2X paint. ( Had an experience with a mailbox and not waiting for the paint to dry. Applied the clear coat too soon and had issues)
SO, after I paint the bass I will wait 1-2weeks to make sure the paint cures completely. Below is their official answer:

Our Painter's Touch 2X Ultracover gloss clear is compatible with our paint + primer spray paint. We recommend to allow the paint to fully dry which is 48 hours before coating with the gloss clear, However it would be ideal if you allow the paint to fully cure which is at 7 days. since the clear formula is stronger than the spray paint. ""

If you ever wanted to remove all the original paint from a guitar to repaint it then use a torch. The heat cracks the paint off in large chips and it pops off like breaking glass or popcorn. Works extremely quickly.
You can absolutely get a great can paint job if you know what you are doing, I have to wear a respirator and I used to do custom paint jobs on bikes in the 70's, I just finished painting a fly V I built and it looks fabulous, I have not taken pics yet as I don't own a digital camera, the V is half white, half black, very, very shiny, I may or may not sand with 1200 or 1500 and buff, it will have to dry a while, so yes, you can get a great can paint job.
I painted the black pick guard on my Sterling SUB Stingray white and as soon as i put a clear coat on it it turned pink which was weird, i resanded it and just did it white (forgo to mention i used spray paint for plastic) and it's held up. The paint job looked good by the way 👍
Rust-Oleum Hammered Metal is one of the best looking finishes you'll find anywhere. It's thick and durable. $6-$7 per can and requires no buffing.
It's like a sore peter, you can't beat it!!
kennis , couple of tips go to automotive paint store you can cheaply buy nozzles with a better fan spray pattern warm paint up in bucket of hot water paint will adhere better✌
I've done lots of pray paint jobs on guitars and the trick is to let the paint cure before you play it....it takes about a week or two for it to fully harden. Once it's cured it will hold up for a long time.
Looks good! While it’s apart you might paint or paper inside the pockets for noise reduction.
If you don't have much money or experience, and you want to refinish your guitar this way, and you want to use this type of paint, and you want to keep it simple and do an ok looking amateur paint job: Sand the guitar's original finish so its old color becomes dull looking. Wipe the dust off. Spray your first color coat, wait ten minutes, spray your second color coat. Wait two full days (48 hours) for it to dry. Lightly sand with very fine sand paper. Wipe the dust off. Spray your first clear coat, wait 10 minutes, spray your second clear coat. Let it dry for a full 24 hours. Done. Be gentle when handling your guitar for a while. It seems odd but you can't just spray your guitar with this kind of paint whenever you want. The drying times are very particular, different drying times change the rules about how the next coat of paint is going to stick on; chemically or mechanically, and that changes the sanding requirements. If you mess up your drying times your new guitar finish will probably bubble and crack, or remain soft for a really long time. This advice is generally pretty sensible I think but I'm not a painting professional.

How did the finish hold up after lots of playing? Just bought a real cheap guitar to experiment spraying with and I love the idea of a satin finish.
The hand kerchief the man is wearing on his face is NOT enough to keep the vapor out of your lungs, I know this because I have studied it in college and know what the laquer vapor will do, it ain't good. T0 the man in the video, GET A RESPIRATOR.

I did the same project and the paint dried just fine. I used a Harbor Freight $12 Painters mask. Best money I ever spent. Single colors are easy, try a burst! Good Job though!
Painting a guitar body with spray can paint is ok. The only problem with it however, is that it never really dries hard enough to take the knocks and bumps. "Two pack" paints dry much harder and tougher than Acrylic's and cellulose paints. You may find yourself having to re paint your guitar to keep it looking good so often, that it would work out cheaper in the long run, to take it down to the Auto- shop and get one of the spray guy's to give it a couple of coats of a proper automotive paint. ....xx
I agree that it comes close.......But not close enough for a gigging player. It never gets properly hard because the finish relies on evaporation of a solvent to obtain maximum hardness and some of the solvent gets trapped in the finish and therefore, never escapes. The two pack paints rely on a chemical reaction between the paint and the hardener. This is why "Epoxy" coatings are so much more durable......There's nothing "wrong" with using a spray can finish.....it just doesn't harden completely and this matters when your guitar is constantly in and out of a flight case and chucked about on stage by a deranged roadie.......lol....:)
2k clear in a can will work at hardening it. Its expensive and has no shelf life, but its essentially what you would spray with a gun.

I like the matte look. My fender 02 highway one is matte. The folks talking enamel and mixing of lacquersrs with enamel, ect, are correct. The pink comes from no primer, and sanding between a coat might have changed it. If you like it, heck yes, it's cool looking
curious to see how the heck fits back on with all the paint in the neck pocket. i have a strat body that i plan to refinish on the cheap so this video definitely upped my confidence.
Looks like lots of folks here were eager to explain how other things work better, etc. The point of the endeavor was to do it cheap and easy, and he got that with better results than most would expect. Case closed. I recently painted a strat copy using the same products, though I did use the primer too. It worked really well - not perfect, but better than I expected for my first attempt at painting anything important with a spray can. It can be done, and no, my finger isn't squishing down into gummy, uncured paint. If you use common sense and follow the directions you'll know when you gotta just leave it before adding more coats. It's not rocket science, and no, you don't have to sign over your house to StewMac to achieve the desired result.
I painted a project with the Rustoleum gloss black with no primer or undercoat and I was really impressed with the finish. The only disadvantage though with 1k paints is that the not like 2K paints so they chip and scratch easily. If you want a really good finished get a 2K can but the only bummer is that you can only use the can once.

Krylon is THE rattle can paint for guitars . No primer if guitar already painted . Sand with 400 grit to maintain “ paint bite” ,clean with rubbing alcohol,wear latex gloves to keep oils and fingerprints off surface. Be patient...let sit in the sun or hat lamp paint will dry in an hour, but it will be soft and not completely cured. 2weeks dry time if you are going to relic. And lastly, what do you need rustolium for . What’s gonna rust.. this is also why there was problems with the finish...orange peel etc. krylon is formulated for wood and not metal. Happy spraying ! Right now I am using krylon fusion paint / primer all in one .got too close and got a drip or three but in 24 hrs sanded easily with 400 grit and respirated whole guitar a second time. That’s it. I used a matte white finish that puts off a ghostly luminous finish .looks awesome and no clear coat. Matte finish in red or etc. probably look even better. The problem I have had with clear coats is the dry time. I’ve had rattle can lacquer take weeks to completely set up. The sheen in the can is usually enough.
I wouldnt dismiss the pink; Billy Gibbon's used a pink stratocaster given to him by Hendrix
You can do a cheap paint job easily, spray cans don't cost a lot in general and if you have good technique it can almost copy the precision of a spray gun.
It more depends on how well you know what you're doing.
I'm assuming this was your first time refinishing a guitar considering the amount of things you completely flew over.
i paint guitars all the time with rattle cans i usually use automotive paint tho and i strip the guitar right down to the bare wood this way i dont get cross cantamination going on cool video tho
Rustoleum 2x and Duplicolor are the two best can paint for guitars. These are the two options of choice among Eddie Van Halen Franky builds. Duplicolor is really the best but cost and added effort makes the 2x a better choice for beginners.
I usually just stain the body and go with some tru oil. Works pretty well... Sometimes.
I use a spray paint called Montana Black, which is a nitro combination-based spray paint and it works wonderfully well at $8 a can.
didn't finish the video yet, but can answer the question for anyone looking through comments and it's a yes. I've done it. don't cut corners on sanding, be thorough, and it'll last. it won't hold up like a really nice paint over time, but I have a guitar that was done with spray paint that has held up for 10 years now, it's fairly soft and prone to getting scraped off with use, but it looks natural in the end and people will pay top $ for fake relic'ing, you can just do the real thing this way
In 1969. I painted the body on my 1959 fender jazz master with a spray bomb. ..I painted it appliance white.. I didn’t even sand the body. After all, I had only paid $175 for the guitar and the original case in a pawnshop in 1966 when I was 14 years old..
in 2017 I put the guitar on eBay. I told the story about how I spray painted the body because it looked like Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s guitar, it had cigarette burns on the headstock, the back of the neck finish was completely worn off down to the wood. But I just painted the body. that guitar sold for so much money on eBay that I went out and bought my wife a new car with the money, spray bomb paint job and all. When the buyer on europe got to guitar, he said he wasn’t gonna change a thing because, the paint job was part of the Guitars history..

Ok so I've got a shiny red Jackson Warrior and wanna paint it matte black with vermilion red towards the cutaways. I'm a bit reluctant towards removing the hardwire myself in fear of messing the wiring up. I however plan to get the pickups changed at a guitar store but can't visit it that often...

Yeah if you tape over the pickups you should be fine, if the Jackson has a Floyd then that's an issue because there'd be a spot where the old paint is under the bridge

I paint like this.
Its all in the preparation. Sand, sand , sand. Various grits of wet and dry (wet ) to get a smooth finish, use a sanding block to ensure a flat surface. Then spray your paint. Warm the tin a bit in warm water first, helps get a smooth flow. Do about 3 or 4 thin coats. Then a Last one a bit thicker.
Use various grits again to smooth it . Then spray it with a clear coat. 4 nice thin coats should do. Then sand sand sand . Start with 1000 grit to 3000 grit. Buff and polish. Jobs done

I understand you were going for quick and dirty to see what would happen but I personally would have sanded the old color back completely and then used bondo (yes the car repair stuff) sanded that down and then use an acrylic lacquer. But nitocellulose is probably the better choice.
I have a very similar looking cheap guitar like that one of yours.
Ive scuffed up most of the paint and at some parts, i got access to its wood which looks like a freaking 80% of it being mdf or some sort.
Already thinned it out for a good bit but i got tired of sanding it down.
It's still is a bit smooth but not glossy/glassy as the stock finish.
I wonder if it's enough to start painting it up.
The resin protection of it seems like its 2mm thick.
How has this held up? How long did the clear coat take to dry?
Nice video mate. Hey, try using a tack cloth just before spraying. These are cheap, and will get all the little specks (and hairs!) off the surface.

I’m using colonial red gloss from rust oleum spray paint and plan on using varathane water based polyurethane, will that work? I don’t want the paint to pull off or wrinkle

Like your videos. Would have preferred you did an ultra gloss finish like a normal guitar to show us if you can get a great finish with just good quality spray cans. Matt finishes always look better & flatter as they cannot reflect imperfections in the light as well. So I kinda think you sold-out on this video. Didn't find out about prep for each coat or potential waiting times for the paint to harden before buffing but you did say you weren't going to spend a great deal of time on it.

For 1. It isnt scratch resistant. 2. It doesnt cure for a hard coat. But as i said. If its a cheapo guitar it doesnt matter much. But if its a high ender. I wouldnt ever rattle can it

Don't use the 2x it sprays too thick and won't lay flat and give a good level finish. That is made for a rough surface.
Just did the same thing with the exact product you used except I used a bright red and a satin clear coat! Turned out great!

How much time did you wait between coats i am a different version of rustoleum and even after 4 days the paint comes off with 2000 grit sandpaper
Some amount of paint will come off with 2000 sand paper no matter what. To answer your question though, I did three or four coats. I think the least I waited in between coats was two or three hours for a light coat towards the end. But I think I waited a day in between the first and second coat.
It did take a good two weeks or so to fully cure.

Hi, I just sanded a couple body contours onto a cheap T-style guitar I have. It's mahogany. What can I use just to coat the raw wood quickly? I don't care about looks... just want to get rid of the feeling of the raw bare wood when I play it now. Thanks!

was just wondering, I've use this method on a few bodys myself, but I find this rustolem 2X scratches super easy and stays kind of tacky even after a week of curing. do you have the same problem? maybe im not letting the coats dry fast enough? i wait about 8 hours or so between coats anyways nice video man keep up the good work

Kennis, good-looking good results, good paint choice I did this myself with satisfactory results but man alive you've got to spring for a genuine paint 'fume' mask (Not a dust mask). Home Depot carries a $35-$45 painting-type mask that you can store in a plastic bag and re-use a half dozen times. I don't mean to jump ugly with you because I like what you're doing and you have planned everything out nice and carefully and it's good to experiment with finish ideas. A proper mask is just a little detail. I used to spray with no mask for years then I started using lacquer then I had to get myself a mask. I was shocked at how much better I felt after spraying even a small thing.
My pet peeve are consumer auto parts stores that carry a lot of nasty stuff: fast-drying lacquer thinner, Aircraft stripper, and rattle cans of lacquer clear coats and colors and they only sell dust masks. I wouldn't use Krylon or Rustoleum anymore without a designated paint mask. I hope this helps.
