I'm from Rio de Janeiro and I watched the archery in person. One thing I can say that this video doesn't do justice is how strong and crazy the wind was, look at the flags.
Korea's never stopped gold medal streak in archery starts from 1984 LA olympic games for more than 30 years. IOC has changed the archery rules so many times since Korea has been too much strong. It is said that it is harder to win the Korean qualification round than winning Olympic medals.
C'mon this cant be called a sport, it requires no skills apart from those you learnt at the funfair in your childhood.. thats why koreans do well, no other country would take it seriously. Even high and drunk I can get a gold medal
I like the German coach doing the little head bob bow. Not normal for a European to do but shows that extra bit of effort to show respect through culture.
You know what....It is harder to be a national representative of Korea than to win a gold medal at the Olympics..and also Korea 's archery is public and transparent without being affected by any kind of alumni connection or regional relation. No matter how you change your archery rules, you will never be able to defeat Korea.
Jack Shin I don’t think that they are invincible, it’s just that the way they think about archery is different. In most countries, archers focus on the target and to land on the bullseye while training, unlike Korean archers which focus more on the form and their spiritual self.
Korea had been invaded so many times in the history. But they have survived at the end of the small peninsula because of their arrow skill. I'm not joke.
Eh, yes and no. Arguably, our greatest admiral, was the master of the seas: Admiral Yi and his navy saved South Korea during the old Japanese invasions.
Korea was never small in the past and it isnt small now either. Being a huge country isnt always determined by land size, it is determined by influence, power, and wealth, something Korea is very huge at. This is why Korea is often perceived as way more huge than its actual size. Korea also has not only used its archery skill to defend, but also to attack and expand. You seem to forget that expansionist Korean dynasties which invaded Northeast China and Inner Mongolia existed. Goguryeo is an example. Its territory expanded to Northeast China, Manchuria, Inner Mongolia, and modern day Far East Russia. There are even Korean fortresses found in Eastern Mongolia.
Archery is very inexpensive and fun if you go with a basic recurve bow. I picked up a Bear Titan bow for US$60 and some aluminium arrows for US$10 each. And it's a serious bit of kit, I started with cardboard targets but my arrows went straight through it so I upgraded to foam panels. With a bit of skill and practice, you can even be accurate.
We used to make our own bows and arrows every winter(it is the season for archery back there) when we were kids. Treading knee deep snow in search of good twigs, it used to be a lot of fun. Those days are lone gone now😏😏😔😔
PooPipeBoy Serious question: is it too late if I want to start at 26? =/ I would love to be able to do this, but sometimes I feel it would be too difficult at this age.
What's the point of separating men from women in disciplines like archery? Wouldn't it be better to have one gold medal for the best archer in the world?
The Monolith I've often thought this too. This event is a contest of skill; physical strength doesn't mean anything if your opponent is a better shooter.
sharktamer irrelevant. The distance of the target is the same for both sexes which means you need just enough strength to make it through (both females and males can) and also practice to make your shoot powerful and stable. A man can shoot 10 and a woman can shoot 10, too. Not like they r shooting against each other. So this sport better not be separated. It’d be more competitive and fun to watch. Just that society is not ready for some hardcore logic real no Hollywood life but asleep on talents because they hold boring excuses.
The Monolith to be fair women wouldn’t have a chance against men. Look up the records of men and women in therms of scores. Men shoot better than women.

Since ancient times Koreans including women used bows and arrows as their most important weapon in the mountainous country hunting the worlds biggest siberian tigers.. Our ancestors made bows with unbeatable quality and Koreans still make the best archery equipment. The Olympic team even trained on a remote island against sea wind to be prepared to wind gold in a typhoon.
This is the Olympic style/discipline. All their attachments decrease any vibration of the bow which can interfere with perfect shots. One can still use a barebow recurve and compete with it. There are tournaments for barebow, olympic style, compound etc. Look for a local range, they often have beginner bows that one can try out :)
Recurve archery has also to do with physical strenght. In compound I think there should not Be any gender restrictions... Archers usually hit more 10 than 9, both women and Men. In compound a woman got a perfect score in qualifications.
At Olympics they both compete at 70 m and in that sense the competition is identical. In lower level competitions, there's often differences in men's and women's rounds. For example a "Gents" WA 1440 round is 144 arrows split over 90, 70, 50 and 30 metres, while a "Ladies" 1440 is over 70, 60, 50 and 30 metres. Elite level men typically use higher draw weights than the women (anything up to around 60 lbs, vs more like 40 on average for women). This can be a significant advantage at longer ranges, as the flight time is shorter, so less opportunity for wind drift and so on.
