Great thread response Brian. I was hit with a fine when driving to the Edinburgh Suede concert. My crime driving my old car in a Low Emission Zone.🤬 Super choices shown. I may do this but suiting up, seems extreme. Weller doing Batman has been covered already in the comments. But the then 19 yo Weller was Who obsessed, and didn't have any more songs.
We don't have any Low Emission Zones, but we have had annual emissions testing, which I think is over now. Anyway, that's a bummer about the fine 😔
Since you didn’t actually suit up I won’t comment on your ingenious pick of the Runaways. I did like your picture from your time in the Pet Shop Boys.
Well, Cecile thinks the VC is crazy enough without adding cosplay to the mix! I thought I looked more like a member of the Smiths than the Pet Shop Boys!
@@EmbryonicRobot I’m sure that’s how you want to remember that 😉
@@vikingbrace Ha ha. True!
@@EmbryonicRobot I love your “cosplay” comment 😂
Those are Chixedos! Glad he didn’t ask for 10 guys in birthday suites. 😂
Love Tin Machine!
Chixedos. I wish I had thought of that!
Nice ones!! Glad someone posted Numan’s Dance album (a favorite of mine) …another option would’ve been Numan’s ‘white suit/red bow tie’ look on ‘The Fury’ album from 1985 😎👍
I considered The Fury as well, but Dance won out 🙂 I like Dance better!
Love those photos at the beginning! Gary Numan, ever the sharp dresser.
Numan was always well dressed, much more so than me! Ha ha.
Gee Brian was that Marshal Crenshaw in those pics or a member of Talk Talk ? 😊. Fun addition to MGK’s “Suit & Tie” thread , these always make me think of which albums I would pull if I was involved. Been watching your vids faithfully as I am stuck at home being quite sedate away from work or active duty. As I mentioned months ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and last week I had surgery. Feeling good all things considered and now it’s weeks of boredom and recovery. VC videos, Prime and Netflix are my new companions for visual distraction. I also purchased a few hundred dollars worth of new vinyl before going under the knife. This was purely for my sanity and am just now able to climb up & down stairs to enter my man-cave and listen to music. Could be worse lol. Oh thought you would show Nash the Slash in his suit. Till next time Brian and hope all is well.
Hey, I'm glad to hear that the surgery went OK. VC videos, Prime and Netflix sounds exactly like my life! Ha ha: Marshall Crenshaw.... Now that you mention it! I did consider Nash the Slash, but I think I have mentioned him too frequently. A good stack of new records is probably the best medicine. Nice to hear from. All the best in your recovery. Enjoy the records 🙂
Jonah Lewie’s Kitchen at Parties is a cracking single. Made top 20 in UK, not as popular as Stop The Cavalry which went Top 10 but I think Kitchen is a much better track. For guys in suits and ties check out Secret Affair - mod revival band so suits and ties were the uniform of the genre.
I do recall mods in suits and ties. It seems that the Ska revival in the late 70s and 80s required suits and ties (and hats) too? Ii agree: Stop The Cavalry is OK but. the Kitchen song was so much better!
Oh, and I have that Brubeck record. And the Jona Lewie one. Nice work.
Ii guess it holds that you would know Jona, since he is from the UK!
Fun stuff Brian. Always interesting to see the albums you pull. Sloan, always solid choice 😊
Cheers
Sloan are always great. They should have been bigger, IMHO.
knew you would knock this out of the park! woof.. that's some toll money right there! $50 Canadian... that's almost a whole record.. without shipping!
So true. You are someone who understands Canadian prices! The recent Slowdive reissues are $69.99 in my local shop 😢
Hi Bryan you’ll always find me in the kitchen at parties. Decent hit in the uk it’s a gem of a song Batman was a strange choice on the jams debut .. fun response have a great weekend 👍
Hi Rob - I get the sense that Jona was better known in the UK than over here, which makes sense. Thanks, and have a great weekend yourself 🙂
Brian, I agree on Gary Numan's shoes. If I were to participate I would probably be able to find a suitable Robert Palmer album cover. Thanks, Chris
Robert Palmer was always impeccably dressed, unlike me 🙂
Great thread Brian. Although I own zero jazz, never listen to it, I must admit "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck is irresistibly good.
Take Five in indeed a fabulous piece of music. It's hard to resist!
Excellent showing, Brian! Glad you got Numan in! We'll talk about Gary in the kitchen at the next party we attend.
I felt like I had to include Numan 🙂 That does sound like a fun party. I'll start planning it!
Were you a former member of Depeche Mode? The tolls in that part of the country are bonkers!!! Interesting Kraftwerk trivia.
I think I would have been a better fit with The Smiths 🙂👍
“As you can tell if you didn’t know already, these are women of course”…”I like Batman but I’d never cover the theme song”…nice Brubeck for Gary for people who like jazz music as you said. “You’ll always find me in the kitchen at parties” is a treasure. Love that song.
I should have dedicated the Beubeck to Gary! Missed opportunity 😕
Yeah! Steady! Great album!
Great album for sure!
I've always been a fan of The Jam jacket. They seem so cool. Great Tin Machine pic. I prefer solo Bowie. Thanks for the great thread responses.
I don't think I was ever as cool as the Jam, but I did own a jacket and tie like that at some point!
Hey Brian, you got to In The City before me! The Jam probably recorded it because The Who did a version on one of their early EPs. It was a bit of a mod pop staple. I’ll need to rethink my video.
Ha ha. Yes, you have to act fast around here! I heard that the Who did a version of Batman, but I have never heard it. I guess I should!
Hi Brian, good job. Dave Brubeck looked like he wanted to sell me a $150k term life policy. The Kitchen cluster at a party is usually the next coolest group, only trumped by the cluster that are found in the invitation only back bedroom. For me I seldom made it past the living room. Toll roads are a sign of the downfall of the empire. 😂
The invitation only back bedroom could be something! We have a couple of noxious toll roads in Ontario, one of which was sold to a private company, if you can believe it! It's insane 😡
I just got my turnpike toll invoice for driving across Kansas to Colorado. It was considerably less. Your video reminded me that I still don't have that Jam album. I love that Jona Lewie song. I have it on a Stiff Records box set. "Gloris" isn't really a cover as Van Morrison wrote it, but I really enjoy the music he did with Them. I have hedged on doing this thread as I didn't want to put on a suit. Now that you have bucked the trend, it might be possible.
Hi Randy - You are quite right about Gloria. I was staring eight at the track listing, and it said Morrison right under the track name, and yet I said what I said. Who can explain that? I mentioned to someone else that Cecile thinks the VC is insane, so if Input on a suit, she might leave me 😃 Most suits look bad anyway 😆
Some great records you pulled here. Funny you mention the Batman theme. My band used to do a cover of it as a goof before we went into Lights Out by UFO. Can't go wrong with Brubeck either! Cheers Brian!
Batman to UFO sounds very cool! Everyone loves Take Five, I think 🙂
Great response & wow! I can see you playing a synthesizer back in the day!🤙🏻
Ha ha. That is funny. A synthesizer might suit me. I am probably not the best person for lead guitar or vocals 😎
Mods were the first bands I thought of when I saw this thread, so The Jam was one of the first ones I thought of. They were sharp dressers for sure - same goes for Dave Brubeck Quartet. I don't think I've heard of Jona Lewis before, unless I've seen you or someone else show him. Definitely not familiar with his music. I see Randy set you straight in a comment below regarding Gloria. I do that in every video - sometimes two or three times - I'll say something that is totally off the wall and doesn't make sense...lol I enjoyed your response!
I think I need a fact checker and an editor 🙂
Nice picks with Jam, Runaways and others. I was thinking to join in this, but I don't believe to have problems to pick recs that someone have already shown...
I was truly surprised at how many albums I own with dudes with suits on the cover. It's impressive!
@@EmbryonicRobot Yes. Style matters! By the way I just uploaded my response for this.
I love that Tin Machine album, I had it as a teen in some form at one time but no longer . I would like to reacquaint this album to my collection. The pocket puff adds a touch of elegance and sophistication.
I have a pocket puff, in a kind of dusty rose colour. I had to wear it to my sister's wedding. I like to think that it made me look more elegant and sophisticated, but I am not sure that it did 🙃
Very cool entry. Gary Numam capped it off handsomly!
Not keen on bands ignoring or pretending releases don’t exist anymore because they’ve decided they don’t like. «Oh. You liked that record mr. fan? Well YOU ARE WRONG! Ha ha ha (in german).
Good point! It's like a slap in the face to the fans. Mr Numan alsways had a good sense of style 🙃
@@EmbryonicRobot Oh he sure does!
You're so right Brian: I've only been around for a few months, and have learned I gotta be fast with these threads! I'll get to it, but I'm working on my own stuff in the VC pipeline! Always great showings, and 'you're welcome' for the toll fees from the good ol' USA. 😎🎶
Damn the tolls, but at least we no longer have to keep stopping to make payments. That really slowed the drive down!
@@EmbryonicRobot Got that right! I don't miss that at all...
That is such a bizarre thing to do: send you a bill in the mail for road tolls. Why not just pay as you go? Sending a bill in the mail seems nefarious.
It seems nefarious, but it is better than the old system, where you had to stop every few miles and before every bridge to make a physical payment at a booth. They must have saved a huge amount of money eliminating all of those thousands of jobs. NY has a deal with Ontario to match licence plates to people. The other option is to get a transponder, which automates everything and it bills your credit card. It sucks, though . . .
@@EmbryonicRobot I guess it also prevents those log jams of traffic pumping exhaust into the atmosphere. If you know what to expect, I guess it’s fair and good. But if I just suddenly got a bill in the mail by surprise, I’d be a bit disgruntled.
@@musicisajourney I knew in advance it was coming because I had driven in NY state un the past with those booths and was aware that it was automated now. But, MGK said that other people he knows from Canada had never received a bill, so I had hoped they would miss me. Sadly, they got me!
👔
🙂👍
Check out that young knife in the suit! They're women! Thankfully we have the HP to point out the subtle details of life. Batman covers...I hear ya HP. OMG a real Ralf & Florian. I have never found it. They never re-released the first 3 which are all great I think. A pocket puff! I have not heard that term before. Handkerchief would be what I'd call it, but who knows maybe it is a pocket puff. I remember the Jonah Louise song We Get It Right. Numanoid alert. Do you need a tie for it to be considered a suit these days?
I have unofficial copies of the first two Kraftwerk LPs, but they sound good to me, though they are probably from a digital source. I have a pocket puff, from my sister's wedding. It's too small to be a handkerchief, so maybe that's the difference? I think the definition of a suit is elusive. After all, my dad loved so-called leisure suits, which were a crime against civilization and fashion. And yet, people called them suits!
@@EmbryonicRobot I have an original 1972 Vertigo of the S/T Kraftwerk comp which is just the the first two records as a double album. You know thew one with the black background & the blue soundwave (I think that's what it is) on the cover. It's brilliant. Smaller than a handkerchief. Ok I learned a new term. Where do you stand an cravats and suits? I had to look up leisure suit...Woah!
@@benrankins4446 I think a cravat is a crime against civilization!
@@EmbryonicRobot ...And your answer is correct HP 👍
@@benrankins4446 I am relived that we agree!
Wow, You get sent a bill for driving on U.S roads!! Never knew that.
Well, you don't have to pay to drive on all roads, just the toll roads. I am not sure if all states have toll roads, though. You can navigate around them, but in that case, my drive to Boston would have taken over 11 and a half hours, as opposed to 8. We have some toll highways in Ontario, but I always avoid them!
@@EmbryonicRobot Ah, I see. We don't have any toll roads where we live in Western Australia so it never occurred to me.
@@qoquaq I wish we they didn't have toll roads. But, when a nation is afraid to tax people, I guess this is what happens.
@@EmbryonicRobot Sorry Brian I missed this reply. Yes Governments are very good at finding ways of getting money without raising taxes.
@@qoquaq Truth!
Great pictures!
