    Video Content:
    00:00 Introduction
    00:53 Jacket
The classic choice for fabric is a black wool barathea which is a little more matte and alternatively, you can opt for something navy or a very dark blue, maybe with a herringbone weave, some people even go with fine twill weave or a plain weave.
    02:19 Vents
The most traditional jacket has no vents which is unusual today because most jackets have either side vents or center vents.
    02:39 Pocket Style
The most original pocket style is jetted pockets. You have one on the right, one on the left, no ticket pocket.
    02:50 Buttons
You want black matching buttons that are either covered in the same fabric as your tuxedo or silk, or you go with a contrasting button.
    03:10 Lapels
    Should be faced with silk.
    03:47 What to avoid
    - You do not want a flannel material
    - Avoid notched lapels
    - Avoid any two-button or three-button single-breasted jackets
    - Avoid side vents and center vents
    04:20 Trousers
You want a matching material to the jacket in the same color. A special hallmark of the black-tie trouser is a strip of fabric on the side which is also called a galon.
    06:23 Vest
When it comes to an evening vest, they're very different from your day vest. They have a much deeper cut out so you see more of your shirt front and the studs on your shirt front.
    05:31 Cummerbund
When you wear your cummerbund, make sure that the pleats face upwards not downwards.
    07:09 Tuxedo Shirt
It's made of a white fabric usually poplin or twill and it always has an insert. It can either be in Marcella or a pique cotton insert, it can be a pleated front or sometimes just a finely woven pattern.
    08:39 Black Bow Tie
Never wear a black neck tie, that would be incorrect. The only acceptable color is black and you can go with different shapes and textures.
    09:21 Shoes
The only two options were a capless Oxford shoe that was laced or opera pumps also known as court shoes with a deep cut out and a bow in front.
    10:59 Black Tie Accessories
You want to have black silk socks that are over the calf.
    11:35 Cuff links
Usually black such as onyx or abalone, sometimes, they would come as a matching set with your shirt style. Personally, I also like to wear white mother of pearl studs because it just provides a different look .
    12:14 Boutonniere
Most classic choice are carnations. White or red will work as well but you can also go with pink or white.
    13:41 Hat
The perfect hat would be a homburg hat because it has the right degree of formality.
    13:56 White evening gloves
It definitely provides a very dapper look, screams elegance.

@4:47 - This also applies to laundering your pants and jacket! Whether it’s a suit or a tuxedo, you should ALWAYS have them dry cleaned together. If you wear your suit coat without the trousers, or vice versa, and only bring in one piece to be cleaned, over time the color will start to fade. Do this enough times and your expensive suit will be reduced to simply a sport coat and a pair of slacks that don’t match.

You can substitute suspenders for a shoulder holster just make sure the tuxedo is tailored to it or it will print. Don't go with anything parkerized or powder coated but rather a high polish blue or a semi-brushed stainless. You want to avoid anything nickel plated which is more suited for white tie. It should also have grips made from a dark wood like Walnut or Cocobolo. Shades like Birch or Maple are just too flashy.

Amazingly in-depth video. I'll be sure to remember all of this in the future. I have one question for anyone that wouldn't mind answering it. How would I go about an event that could be considered "Creative Black Tie"? I understand it's odd to ask, but I'll be attending a formal dinner with my fiancée soon. While it's hinted as Black Tie, I know the expectations are a bit relaxed to let everyone wear more colors. I want to remain true to the rules of the jacket and pants, but I'm unsure if I should wear a vest and bow tie that coordinate with her dress, or just stay black and let my Boutonniere and Pocket Square match her.
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Great video as usual! Regarding regular, french cuffed white shirts to a tuxedo, the British royal family is often seen doing this. Wouldn't you say that they therefore have made that more "casual" look acceptable, like the Duke of Windsor made wearing turn-down collars to a tuxedo a standard? People should not underestimate the importance of a cummerbund if you aren’t using a waistcoat. When standing, your jacket should always be buttoned, and the cummerbund gives you a continuous black silhouette with no little white triangle between the trouser and the jacket button. All you have is the striking V of the shirt front. That is why the cummerbund is so critical, and should not be overlooked, as it so often is.

What about the buttonhole for the boutonnière (I see you never got a response from Raphael)? And, lastly, on what fabric did you decide & where was it sourced? I’m assuming you have a serger machine? Completely agree with SRS on all but two points... Whereas he thinks formality has loosened up enough allow highly polished balmorals or coverall lace-ups, it is my view that patent leather shoes are a signature hallmark of the black tie ensemble. At the same time, I have the reverse opinion on jacket vents since it is almost impossible to find an off-the-rack tuxedo in 2018 (even with the other correct features I.e, slit pockets, peak or shawl lapels etc) made without them other than GA or RL Purple Label. Even if you are having it made, vents provide the function of comfort when sitting down.

Both center vent and two vents come from riding (2:25). The center vent is for a long coat (see fox hunting coats) and two vents for a shorter coat (more of a sport coat, called hacking jacket). If you are posting during a trot your jacket will get caught on the back of the saddle unless it has vents. This will irritate your horse and you will be off balance.

In some cases, side vents give off a "police" vibe, as detectives tend to prefer them because it makes accessing a weapon in a concealed hip holster easier.

1:33 I am getting a tux for a black tie event in Alaska come February however I think I will just layer underneath as that advice is probably from first hand experience

I have always had extremely curly red hair I feel it would be best to apply some creme on it to hold it down and darken to match the tux. For someone who wears predominantly brown what pattern would you suggest?

I've seen photos of the Duke of Cambridge wearing a soft broadcloth white shirt with mother-of-pearl boutons with his evening wear. I think on your website you mentioned this is acceptable. Could you elaborate more on such shirts with black tie?

Thanks for this guide. Where did you purchase your jacket in this video? I'm trying to find a Black Tie ensemble online, but they all seem to have multiple buttons, notch lapels, or flap pockets. Is there a clothier that you recommend?

God, I wish more contemporaries would wear tuxedos. It makes it easier and more accessible to wear it yourself

Would it be OK to match the color of the boutonniere and/or the pocket square with your date's outfit?

You can also wear an opera cape instead of an overcoat when it cold.

I realize an opera coat is more formal and it’s more flamboyant but it suites me.

I love velvet. What are the rules for wearing a velvet tuxedo jacket? Why would the trousers look like? Would they also be velvet. If not, how would you find matching colours and what material would the gallon be. Finally, would a velvet bow self-tie bow tie be the perfect match? Thanks

Hello Sven, are lapel pins allowed or frowned upon with black tie? Is the boutonnière the only acceptable accessory to put on the lapel?

There's these little metal covers on eBay and other sites that are supposed to make the buttons on your shirf cuff look like cufflinks, but I think if you bought several of those and clipped them to the fly buttons instead, they'd make elegant, although rather large shirt studs. What do you think?

Although uncommon, would it be correct to wear a bowler with black tie? Also, I thought that a boater with a black band is appropriate with black tie when worn in summer, am I mistaken?

Probably a silly question but because I have a short Achilles tendon I need to wear boots for the ankle support, is that still ok for black tie?

What about color? Is midnight blue always an acceptable substitute or are there some instances in which we can only wear black?
