Hardness and toughness are two different things. It is difficult to be scratched (due to hardness) but definitely can break (insufficient toughness) when hammered.

Diamonds have fault lines along which they break when pressure is applied...so diamond is not unbreakable...the pressure that has to be applied should be large though
