The times during the 90's when you can go to a local coffee shop on band night and watch ridiculously talented kick ass bands like Jawbox. Some special times for sure.
These guys are amazing, even 30 years later. I literally sing to myself (almost on a daily basis) as I'm washing my hands in a sink, "one hand will wash the other". That statement by itself is so insightful.
the drummer Zach is amazing. this band was one of the best DC bands. see also: Government Issue, Shudder To Think, Fugazi, Bluetip, and Burning Airlines.
It's weird to me how 15 year old me (in 94) had no clue about these guys, and if I had heard them I probably would have thought they were too noisy and weird, but now to 42 year old me who just heard them for the first time this sounds like the best thing ever.
You are lucky if you get to see this. The restraint and tension in this track have always moved me. Forgive an inappropriate? analogy, but in Dio there are these what I like to call "waterfall moments" where the musical momentum simply overwhelms the song or the resistance of the speaker ("Holy Diver" and "Invisible" for example.) In any case, this song has such a profound climax: dueling guitars, held at abeyance until they spill over into a kind of frenetic, birdlike fury. And of course, the always very precise, deliberate and intoxicating drumming of Zach Barocas.
Saw these wizards live in 95 for $1 at the DPC in Tucson. They hung out with the 20 or so of us there. They played as if it was an audience of thousands. It was sheer power.
I love that they just look like normal working folks.. no rock star bs, no adults playing dress up, no cheesy theatrics... Just normal guys and girls rocking the fuck out..
PoemsAboutStars 100% agree. they are more punk rock than any kids who simply look the part. these guys (and kim) simply ARE punkrock. their influence on the DC punk scene and generations of rockers-- undeniable...
I feel lucky to have seen Jawbox several times when I lived in Boston and can confirm that seeing this in-person is even better than you've imagined. These folks put on a stunning show.
Gray Matter is my favorite dischord band (aside from minor threat). Jawbox seemed to do their best stuff on the major label. I interviewed Jay & Kim. Super nice. Jay did even better post Jawbox. I bet they were tired of being confused with Jawbreaker.
Saw Jawbox along with Tilt open up for Green Day in 94 at the palace in Hollywood! Great show! It was probably a month before green day got huge and every major label was on the hunt for punk rock bands
120 min was the perfect blend of introducing people to acts like Helmet yet still showing a lot of popular bands like Soundgarden (music videos at least. Not sure if they performed live on there). You're right, this show was one of a kind.
I saw these guys about 25 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida and they absolutely killed it. The next day they visited my record shop in St. Augustine. Such cool people
I had the pleasure of seeing them around this time somewhere in Texas. Kim had such endearing enthusiasm, I fell in love. Prolly one of my earlier girl crushes.
One of the greatest! Was lucky enough to have seen them 3 times. Kim Coletta was always a blast to watch- she's still one of my favorite bass players to this day
@rj zander As peeperogers said: "Beautiful"... Easy now amazing music. One hand will wash the other... Of course the will. An angel will fly over wash over... Where was I when I needed to hear this Celesial Music..........
I actually was a huge fan back when this album was released. They opened for STP and the Meat Puppets in the summer of 94. Was at that show in the front of the GA audience in Indianapolis. Still remember that show to this day. STP and Jawbox killed! Meat Puppets were “okay”.
i saw their 9th to last show ever as documented in their box set. St. Andrews, Detroit. i took the set list off the stage, with the small piece of duct tape that held it down. cuz that kind of stuff's important to geeks like me..... Still have both in a filing cabinet.
I am your age btw. I just discovered this song a week ago. I was watching something about The Deftones and in it states that this song was an influence so I looked it up. And I love it.
I saw them in Ruston, Louisiana, in late '94, and that remains one of the most awe-inspiring drum performances I've ever seen. Zach was positively on fire that night, and abused the hell out of a rented kit.
My favourite Dischord band! Looove Fugazi but at 16 this band spoke to me more than them or any other Dischord band. J Robbins can do no wrong in my opinion.
Damn! Same here, dude! Not the first time I saw live music, but certainly my first proper rock concert. I’ll never forget it. Jawbox blew my teenage mind from the first chord. Meat Puppets & STP didn’t suck either! What show were you at?
my first concert back around this time was them, later I found that they are a mix of Fugazi and Face to Face at least that's where their music lead me:)
Geez I whish I Hadn't seen this video, this live performance is much better than the studio version (mix of guitars is better, voic of Robbins is deeper etc.). The con is now I don't want to listen to the original. Anyways thanks OldSchoolVHS for uploading it, 90's rock!
I saw them live that year play Lucy's Record Shop here in Nashville. Lucy's was a cool place. It was a record store/club that was the center of punk and alternative rock in town back then.
The startling combination of cold articulate lyrics and caustic skeletal arrangement, both in the service of a blistering indictment of the political economics of voyeurism, makes this work stand the test of time. It will always be a classic in my list.
Deftones do an awesome cover of Savory. Probably one of the few bands who do awesome covers. They're Drive Like Jehu cover of "Caress" is awesome as well.
the first 15 second of this video is hard to watch... awkward silence, and an empty studio. i know it's a recording for TV, but... just not right to have one of the greatest punkrock bands in the world ever play in front of... camera operators... T..T knowing well that we will never see such greatness on national TV ever again...
Kim Coletta and Bill Barbot are my parents. Crazy seeing them like this. I was born 7 years after they performed this.
your parents rule
your parents kick ass
Your parents are my teenage years. Cheers!
Not only are your parents really fucking cool, they're also pretty influential.
please tell them they need to get back on the road at least once
What the F happened to music like this? Bands used to have to prove it live, this song kicks ass in 2023 STILL..
There’s still plenty of great artists.
Kim coletta is my social studies teacher in the 6 grade lol
nick gil That’s kick ass
I was thinking how cool Kim was, then saw your comment immediately after.
The bass player? Absolutely intuitively amazing musicianship.... Godspeed whatever you decide to do in this life... Thankyou for Being.
@rj zander fuck off
Dude that is awesome!!🤘🎸

the drummer Zach is amazing. this band was one of the best DC bands. see also: Government Issue, Shudder To Think, Fugazi, Bluetip, and Burning Airlines.
I saw Shudder to Think play in Cincy once. Great show!
God whoever mixed this did an awesome job... those drums sound so punchy, and the toms even have a full sound. Amazing.
This mixing is so insane it genuinely sounds like you're listening to it in the studio
It's weird to me how 15 year old me (in 94) had no clue about these guys, and if I had heard them I probably would have thought they were too noisy and weird, but now to 42 year old me who just heard them for the first time this sounds like the best thing ever.
Such a powerful song.
Performances like this had me frantically looking for blank vhs tapes when I was in high school.
Yeah same here except I tended to record mostly Beavis and Butthead and South Park most lol
@@creekandseminole Well that's good too!
I completely miss radio station performance or tv show performances from the 80s and 90s... Nothing like this anymore. 😞
True story.

I love it when I see one of my favorite artists praising the work of another one of my favorite artists.
:)
oh hey, cool.
Man, you need a napkin or something?
the whole song feels like it's about to explode for four and a half minutes
Btw, your last name is really cool!

I'm really glad i got to see them live. Great show, Boston, touring on the album after this one, whatever the fuck that was called.
@@Notecrusher right on! That may have been the self-titled album they were supporting? What a band to see live! Cheers
Videos like this are why I love the internet.
Never in a million years did I think I would see something as cool as this.
Amazing. God, I miss this era.

Hell yes. Jawbox - Savory...Nice old school post here!
I use to love the live band segments of 120 minutes on MTV,this show was groundbreaking in so many ways

I saw them live, one of the strongest bands I saw in NYC, in early 90’s,
I have had this stuck in my head for days. How did I miss this in the 90's it's good to find new old stuff.

What a cool guitar solo.

Check out J. Robbins' Burning Airlines (Self-titled album). As much as I love Jawbox, his songwriting on that album is on another level.
Jim Choe Burning Airlines was fucking phenomenal. Jawbox was great, but you’re right- J. was on a whole other level with BA.
Under no circumstances would I call Burning Airlines ":another level" than Jawbox. They were both great bands. Music is not an Olympic sport.
We played a joint concert in Poland in '90s. A very energetic band.
been to hundreds of concerts since. But Aug1994, First live music I ever heard was Jawbox. They opened for STP. I just turned 16

How does one find rock music as interesting as this, does it even exist currently? The bass slides are a nice accent.
i had the amazing honor of meeting them during this era when they stopped in Sacramento. great fucking show and they were all amazing people.
