  • This documentary gives a nice overview of the history of the volkswagen beetle. It contains unique footage of Ferdinand Porsche standing near a pre-war beetle. Before the war this was called the KdF Wagen.
The documentary was broadcast by Discovery Channel in 2004.

Porsche admitted "Well, sometimes I looked over his [Hans Ledwinka] shoulder and sometimes he looked over mine" while designing the Volkswagen Type 1.

The Beatle was and still is a fantastic car but people tend to keep hiding the truth.
It was not design by Ferdinand Porsche. It was design by Hans Ledwinka at Tatra.
The bodywork, the platform chassis and even the oposite cylinder air cooled were concepts clearly "stolen" from Hans Ledwinka.
If you want you can visit the curbsideclassic page and look for Hans Ledwinkas revolutionary Tatras

It seems to me - which this documentary doesn't mention - that the Americans evaluated the VW factory first, as to whether it was worth salvaging, and they considered it worthless. The British then got it by default.
Of course the American opinion was proved hugely wrong, especially when Beetles began selling extremely well in the USA by the late '50s and were all over the place by the early '70s.

Is it possible to show any documentary about pre-war Germany without f*****g Wagner's music as the background? It is so cliched, unimaginative. It's like playing The Stars and Stripes Forever behind every feature about US cars. Get the hint beetlejuic?

The beetle must bother him, seeing as he took time out from his busy day to tell us all what he thinks....Best car ever built in my opinion. Wonder if any car he mentions that is better can do and Antarctic expedition?

Its a love of a simple fun little car that is sometimes a life long interest. And Its roots are not in fascism it was funded by a fascist not created by one know your history before you ramble on. And many cars from bygone era are not great by todays standards but that doesn't take away from the awesomeness of classic cars. Just a thought.

Another order from Hitler was that the car had to be capable of a cruise speed of 100 km/h (62mph) on his Autobahn. Porsche said this was impossible, but 100km/h as a top speed was no problem. Hitler agreed.
Hitler is said to have designed the headlights. The original ones were as small as the rear lights, and Hitler felt the car needed eyes, to make it look friendy, to give it a facial expression.

DolleHengst Interesting. The headlamps are one of The most prominent design features that made the beetle into such a lovable character and probably defined it's "face". It's also one of the main reasons why I'm so charmed by it.

Even today, the name of Adolf Hitler is living, if his thoughts are living !

Why not : Wolfs-Wagen ? As well as this manufacture was build, for the first time in the city of "Wolfsburg" : please look at the first "mark's logo" : it was the armory of this city !

I like swing too, but mainly hard-core jazz like Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie, Art Tatum John Coletrane, on up to the fusion stuff, and so on. But if a bunch of Nazis were sitting around on a nightclub bandstand playing swing music (back in the '40s), I can't think of a better term for it than "Nazi swing", because they would have had their own unique approach to it that set them slightly apart stylistically, probably. Why would you choose that to be so touchy about, I just don't understand...I mean, why would you care?
