All three captured the essence of the original Uni-Vibe and for me, the Funky Vibe sounded the fullest and most pleasing. Great story about Radio Moscow as the inspiration! 👍
Thanks for the feedback. It's helpful to hear what others are hearing. If you haven't already check out the video interview with Fumio Mieda, the designer of the the Univibe and Korg Nu-Vibe. That’s great objective assessment, Matt. I like to listen for two things when comparing univibes: 1) the rise and fall of the waveform. 2) the effect of the preamp on the overall EQ. The Funky Vibe is intended to be a recreation of ‘68 Honey Univibe. The FM-3 is more flexible digital recreation. The Mobius also digital has some flexibility but it always sounds like the Mobius to my ear.
Great video and you did some absolutely killer playing! I subscribed. You deserve more subscribers. How would you compare these to the DejaVibe? I find the DejaVibe a bit noisy but I’ve yet to find a better sounding alternative.
Thanks for the kind words. I wasn’t really keen on the Mini Deja Vibe. It just sounded kind of flat to me. I actually just filmed a new vibe shootout (R Weaver FX - Violet Vibe, Sabbadius - Funky Vibe 68, Sabbadius - Tiny Vibe 58 , Kingtone - Vibe 1968) that should get posted later next week.
I own a number of vibes... Deja Vibe (Cream), Drybell Vibe Machine, Voodoo Labs Micro Vibe, Moen Jimi Zero. The Deja Vibe is definitely in the top rankings. The throb feel a little underwhelming compared to others but it manages to get the tone and stay cleaner at more settings. Most other vibes have a sweet spot range from about 10-2 o'clock on the rate and depth knobs and if you move out of that range it gets too muddy or the throb is just too thumpy that it swallows any definition in your playing. They all sound great but I think the Deja is one of the best in it's usability. I have a Sabbadius Tiny Vibe '68 on the way and I'm thinking/hoping it will be the reigning king of vibes in my collection.
🔥🔥🔥Great tones! Also love the Jimi face and the beach ball, haha! That's next level effort there. Much appreciated! I'm really impressed with the FM-3 sound and the Funky Vibe. I'm not as into what's coming out of the Mobius. Sounded a little muddier to me. Would love to hear your thoughts. Oh, and I STILL have Clean Up Woman in my head, haha. Later!
Thanks for the encouragement Dylan. I’m trying to keep these entertaining. The Funky Vibe is my preferred go to. It nails the Jimi thing that I want in a Univibe. It has a darker input impedance like the ones from the late 60s. Some players don’t like that and might would prefer something like the R Weaver FX Violet Vibe (it’s EQ is more neutral). I was quite impressed with the FM-3 vibe. It’s a little smoother in the rise and fall of the modulation. It’s also a lot more flexible. I was nearly maxed out on its depth to get it the same depth of modulation when the Funky Vibe was on 6-7. The Mobius is great for many other sounds but it’s Univibe sounds outdated to me these days. It doesn’t quite sound right to my ear, but I love the harmonic trem, rotary, and lo-fi settings on it.
I haven’t done any research on the algorithms in the new VP4. I assume that they’re the same effects as on the current existing Fractal units (FM3, FM9, AxeFx III)?
Thanks, David. I put together this board specifically for this video. I'm currently reworking my board. There will be a video showcasing the new configuration in a few weeks. Thanks for watching!
thank you for this video. all of the pedals are very interesting however the FV and FM3 sounds/effects were too big or rather exaggerated for me in most instances. it's the mobius that won my ears and heart, I think it sounds more "real".
Glad you found the video helpful in finding the sound you preferred. The Mobius was my least fav but that only goes to show that we all have different tastes. Thanks watching and commenting!
I play the mobius live for convenience, but when I want that sweet univibe pulse - it's analog! Currently I'm using the Mojo Hand Villanova, but thanks to your shootout I'm adding the Funky Vibe to the wishlist... Another contender would be the Formula B Vintage Vibe - sounds amazing as well. The mobius is brilliant for the multi-effect toolbox it is, but I find from experience that the univibe can become somewhat phaseresque when pushed. Clean, I find it definitely still usable and even beautiful though. But also, when putting a lead guitar sound live through the Mobius' univibe, the effect loses some depth. And that's a shame when you want to meet Jimi ;) (Maybe an FX-loop could help?) Anyway, analog circuits just have a lot more bandwidth to work with, I guess... Thx for your vid!
Glad you enjoyed the video. The Formula B has piqued my interest. Alas one can only justify so much money on a specific effect. I very much agree with your assessment of the Mobius vibe setting. It can feel too phaser-ish at times. I prefer its tremolos, rotary, and lo-fi sounds. It’s worth it for those effects alone. Thanks for watching!
I think the Mobius sounded darker because it should have more headroom dialed in... and FM3 (if available) should have more depth, the effect sometimes was imperceptible. That said the analog pedal is EXPECTED to be the reference, but i believe it is closely followed by the Mobius...which will have some more great effects.
Univibe is such a hard effect to recreate in my opinion. I’ve tried a lot of them: Deja Vibe, Violet Vibe (an A+ analog vibe), Castledine Vibe, Drybell Vibe, Micro Vibe, etc… Most of them lacked the X factor in my opinion. I wish still had all those when I made this video. The Funky Vibe has been my fav for the Hendrix vibe sound. If I wanted a more modern sounding analog vibe, I’d go with a Violet Vibe.
The Micro Vibe is a solid entry level vibe. A lot of players love them. Even though they’re discontinued, you can still get them used. I’ve played through one in the past but I didn’t have one around for this shootout.
Yeah it was pretty obvious in this one that the Sabbadius was the one to beat. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Analog Vibe shootout I did. The competition was much closer in that comparison. th-cam.com/video/kqKSCrUyy1w/w-d-xo.html Thanks for the comment!
Strymon’s products are ubiquitous in the market for good reason. That said, the Univibe recreation on the Mobius seems outclassed in this comparison. I wish I had some other makes of Univibe for this shootout, but I made due with what I had available. I really like the rotary, tremolos, and lo-fi settings in the Mobius. If you ever get the chance, give these settings on the Mobius a go. I think you’ll be surprised. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the feedback. This was my assessment as well. The FM3 sounds better than I expected for a digital recreation. I’d be happy using it. That said, the Funky Vibe is my go to.
I have a pretty massive collection of univibe clones and have pretty much played everything out there. I feel that the mobius didn't get a fair shake because in my humble opinion, it has easily hung with the best of what I own. The biggest problem with it is that it takes some fiddling to dial it in right. Once you get that, it's shockingly good. The last thing that I expected was a digital pedal that could hang with my favorite analog versions. All that said, it was a great video!
Maybe you're right that the Mobius didn't get a fair representation here. I did my best. I'm a huge Strymon fan. I own a lot of their pedals. I love their stuff. I agree that Mobius definitely requires some fiddling to get the best out of the Vibe machine on it. That said, I think we just disagree on the Mobius's ability to nail extremely accurate vibe tones. Does that mean the Vibe in the Mobius is bad? No. It's totally serviceable especially considering the other functionality you get out of the Mobius, but if you value an extremely accurate Vibe, I think you'd be better served going another route. Thanks for watching and commenting.
@@forzabestia4218 I haven't heard it. There are so many vibes and I wish I could try them all out side by side but I don't have the time or the funds to justify it. What a great time to be a guitarist right?

Great comapro! #1 - Sabbadius #2 FM3 #3 - Mobius. Sabbadius has a deeper, more aggressive sound. Not subtle - which I like. Superb tones!

Fractal vibe gets it done and with the vibes in the new fractal vp4 its a winner💪👊

FunkyVibe for Hendrix/Trower. FM3 is close to the FunkyVibe. Mobius for Pink Floyd.
For me the Mobius vibe was the odd man out in this comparison. I was also surprised how much I like the Fractal’s vibe.
