I still have my original G1 Optimus Prime still in near mint condition.. it's my most cherished toy. Imo the best transformer toy ever created
Just order 3 missing link. One for me, one for my son, and one for my grandson who’s is 5 yrs old. I probably have a total of 16 Optimus Prime.

This is a great review, thank you. I think G1 Prime is one of the most beautiful Transformers toys ever created. A perfected version of the OG toy isn't something I thought we'd see - love it.

What you touched on about reissues (and remakes) is exactly why I stick with vintage 80s & 90s exclusively. To me everything after that period is simply capitalising on past successes.
You're right! And part of me thinks it makes it all derivative. But kind of like with music, once you dig deep enough you find everything is a remix, remaster or reworking of something that came before. So personally I'm caught between deeply loving this stuff and yet yearning for more innovation.
That speech at the end about us being so hard to please that Takara is practically limited to just releasing the same thing again, yeah, there's some truth to that. I like the self awareness lol

I'm ELATED they did this (ESPECIALLY with the better articulation), because I lost my G1 Optimus Prime when I lost a job years ago (it was in storage, which I couldn't pay for after losing my job); no complaints from this Optimus Prime admirer!!!!
For me, I appreciate being able to experience a bit of G1 through MissingLink. I grew up with Armada, Animated, the movies. These toys from the 80s, I always saw them as being from a different era, long gone. But having C-01 in my hands, I feel more connected to the history of Transformers, and why it's endured the test of time.
It's doing it again, sure, but it's also allowed people like me to feel the magic for the very first time.

Love seeing the comparison between the OG and this remaster. I’m not a Transformers fan (although, maybe I am? Watching this video in the weekend?) and have NEVER held a G1 Optimus Prime in my hands, even though I really like Optimus’s design and have some Transformers figures in my collection.
Rebuying or buying (slightly) improved versions of toys and comics is, I’m afraid, regular collectors thing. You want to have the ultimate version of your favorite item. But also the original one, because of nostalgia. And maybe also a slightly weird variant of it as well. And maybe one to keep mint in box. And on and on and on…

Cool review, though there’s a couple things you missed. There’s no launching unit but the blue repair/attack station can be pulled out and has wheels of its own that it can roll on unlike the original. Also the pelvis is supposed to be split so that the legs are the right width apart. Hope this improves your enjoyment of the toy even more :)

The pelvis thing I know, but the hip joints are so tight on mine, that moving them bends the thin slice of red plastic they’re attached to. So I slide the crotch shut to avoid those parts breaking when posing the legs.

My brother wanted the OG Prime back in the 80s but missed out on him, i picked up this to give him back a small part of his childhood. Also what is the song used @2:09 i wanted to add it to a playlist thank you.

Great review and thoughts. I’ve got C-02 and already noticed some differences. Yours has more paint application and the matrix chamber is chrome whereas mine is just plain black. Mine also had stickers to cover where yours has better paint apps. I think they got that wrong though. C-02 is supposed to be animation accurate so maybe should have been painted and C-01 should have had stickers like the original toy!
Are the forearm details moulded but unpainted on your C-02? They should have done the yellow forearms arrows for cartoon-accuracy but I guess they weren't gonna do 2 completely different moulds.
The one you got is Toon accurate...
I went through this same process. I cancelled mine. Gave my head a shake and realized 200$ is better spent somewhere else.

There's a lot people saying on TH-cam that it will be kinda hard because of the gun mode. Let's cross our fingers. I do want some autobot cars from this line particularly prowl and jazz.
The pistol mode makes it hard to sell for Hasbro. Takara reissued gun Megatron a few times. Different laws in Japan. And then we can just import the toy ourselves.
@@keepitmintinmindl missed the takara reissue and now on eBay is going at least 400 not even new😮.

I had the original and “Roller” was blue
Proper old-school. Got the original for Christmas 1985 (or was it 1986?) but the build quality on this one seems a lot better. Honestly though I prefer the Lego Optimus Prime which just blew me away the first time I saw it. Somehow it just nails the look of the cartoon -- especially the chest area and blue eyes -- without straying too far from the original toy.
The Lego one is pretty cool too. Have you seen there is a cartoon-colors blue eyes version of this Missing Link Convoy as well?
Was not aware of that. Too bad it doesn't come with a trailer. Then again, neither does the Lego version. 😅
Lego makes good toys...imo underrated... I bought LEGO Voltron Lions couple years ago and it's beautiful
I can see the 50th anniversary re-release of this with improvements a decade from now. Actually maybe Takara will release the dead version first before Hasbro releases their version of this toy by the end of the year just in time for the Christmas sale. Hopefully the price will go down.

I missed it when first first transforming the trailer, but the whole repair bay robot is now removable and has it’s own wheels, kind of like MP44. I guess they couldn’t fit in that feature AND the launcher mechanic for roller at the same time. 🤷♂️
Why didn't yours come with a black and white box like the other unboxing videos?
I think that’s because I didn’t get mine through Hasbro or Hasbro Pulse, but through a retailer that imports them straight from Japan from Takara.
They need to do something simialr with the classic Power Rangers Zords.
I know! ZAP Megazord was nice, but not clunky and blocky enough. Have you seen Playmates is doing the ‘retro look + modern articulation’ treatment to Turtles as well? And Mattel with Street Sharks?

Depends on where you get it from. The black sleeve is something that Hasbro adds when they import it. They do the same with Masterpiece TFs bought through Pulse. Mine came from a shop that gets it straight from Takara.
Is there any die-cast parts or is it all plastic?
Chest and feet are die-cast, just like the original. 👍
