We have been wrapping in fabric for the last 30 years. All the fabric goes into a basket in the middle of the room to use the next year. Under our tree looks like a patchwork quilt with many years of memories. If accessibility is a consideration try Xmas hair ties to hold the fabric together, then young and old can open their gift without assistance. If someone says they really like a fabric it has been known to make it into a project for them. We also do this for all presents throughout the year. When we are fabric shopping and your wondering what to make “gift wrap” is always a good answer. Happy Sewing.
Same here -- My family wraps our gifts in pillow cases, bedsheets, etc. Extra points for creativity! After opening gifts together, we have a laugh while folding everything and putting them back in the linen closet. No fuss, no mess!
I have made fabric bags for years. I buy several yards of Christmas fabric from discount stores, sometimes for one or two dollars a yard. My kids and grandkids just give me back the bags for next year. So easy. Love it.
I have been using furoshiki for 3 years now and I’ll never go back. It’s so much faster to wrap and clean up and I love that less is going in the trash.
I am so excited about this! I am so tired of wasting paper. I know that it will put paper companies out of business, but gosh wouldn’t it be nice not to throw and waste all that paper! we could you re-use the fabric!!! what a great, great, great, idea❣️🎁🎄💝🥰
i received a gift the other day wrapped in fabric. The gift was scrap fabric and trim and bits and baubles. I was thrilled and asked if she'd seen your video. She said no Sent her a a text to check your video. So thrilled with it.
The Japanese have been doing Furoshiki since the 8th century. It is a fantastic way to personalize a gift. They have some beautiful fabric/textiles that are made for this purpose. Happy New Year!
I've just sewed 11 lined giftbags for christmas and will do more if I need them. I will never buy gift wrapping paper again and be much faster in the future with preparing the gifts.
This is really the best idea. Home made gift bags that can be reused for many years. I will make a bunch in various sizes. And choosing gorgeous Christmas fabrics will be so much fun❗❗❗🎄🎁🎅
We only buy gifts for the children in our family this year I'm giving them all art supplies and a tote bag that I have made for them with the tote bag as the wrapping.
Thank you Karen for showing how to wrap presents with fabric. I used the second one to wrap up things I made for my quilting friends and they loved that there was fabric as well. Live your TH-cam videos I am always inspired. Merry Christmas and all the best for 2023 to you and your family.
I am finally almost out of wrapping paper that I purchased in bulk 6 yrs ago. I vowed never to buy paper in bulk again! I also still have an enormous amount of gift bags, but they always seem to be the wrong size, or the wrong occasion. I love the idea of reusable fabric gift bags! We have many quilters in my family and we frequently gift fabric. It would be so simple to use one piece of it as the wrapping! We have been known to pass paper gift bags back and forth until they fall apart. If those of us that quilt, make a few fabric gift bags each year, in a couple years no one in the family will have to buy wrapping paper/bags again!!! 👍😊😁
Thanks Karen. Another creative and inspiring video. How did Mando know his bone was in that package? Hope you find time to relax and enjoy the holidays.
A few years ago I read an article that said how many tons of trash was generated by Christmas. That was the first year I started wrapping with fabric. I have also made drawstring bags. Not as pretty as wrapping paper but I feel better about using them.
I have used a lot of tea towels and fabric ribbon or twine for my adult children’s family presents. They always need kitchen towels so it is a double gift. I also made drawstring backpacks (w boxed corners) for grandkids. I try to choose fabric that they might enjoy.
OMG!!! i don't know why i didn't think of this before. My sister- In- Law made me a outdoor decoration set of the Grinch, Cindy, and the dog, with the sign pointing to different towns from the Dr. Suess book " The Grinch whole stole Christmas". I didn't want to buy paper and was trying to think of a way to wrap it, i had thought of a tree removal bag, however i've been unable to find them anywhere. And was resigning myself to put it into a garbage bag. they are huge. the grinch stands about 6' and cindy is about 4' and the dog is about 3' and the pole is about 5'. i have plenty of craps that i can sew to gether and make a customized bag for them that will make not only the perfect "wrapping" but also the perfect storage bag for them!!!
I love this and done this. Sometimes I make a table cloth if it's a large box and appropriate with the gift. And yes, Merry Christmas and a Blessed 2023 to you and all!!!
I finally had a chance to watch this one. Just in time for wrapping my hardback book for my BookClub white elephant exchange. Now I just need to decide which technique to use. One of our members is a retired Home Ec teacher and an excellent quilter!
I wrap my Secret Santa gifts in a coordinating fat quarter bundle. We make a gift per month, so a bundle with at least 12 fat quarters so the recipient will have enough to make a quilt. I usually use quilt basting pins to hold the fabrics together. I'll need to remember this for next year!
@@paulaapplegate7085 There is a group of quilters at M*. They sign up at the beginning of the year, agree to make 12 small gifts according to themes or skills (1 per month). So sometime in December we become Santa and mail to our gifts. The recipent opens and shares on the forum and thanks her Santa. It's fun and it's allowed me to try lots of new skills.
That sounds like do much fun. I made a couple of my friends advent boxes this year. I saw so many of people on line opening their boxes that they had bought. So many fun items but out of my price range. Lol so I made some notes and hashed out a plan. There were only 6 gifts 🎁. Some had items for them to make or decorate and others were items that I made. So much fun to put together. I love the idea of wrapping them in fat quarters! ( in my notes for next year.) Thank you for the insight.
Great ideas! Japanese use Furoshiki as fabric wraps. A common use is as a food carrier to a party or picnic. Knot on top holds lids on and a handy handle to carry. Fat quarters would easily work!
Hi, Karen I just subscribed to your page I love the gifts wrap with fabric. I'm also watching your other videos, so far they are very helpful. So I'm taking one video at a time. Thanks
I am so glad you did this one! I had a ton if icky fabric that was pretty but very low quality and I didn't trust it to make quilts or anything. So I made backs and wrapping fabric with it a couple of years ago and my daughter and her boyfriend LOVED it. They said it looked too pretty to open and it really made all the gifts under the tree look really pretty!
You read my mind! I have slowly been using up my wrapping paper and wanted to use my fabric stash more and more. Thank you for all the great tips and tricks. Wishing you wonderful, relaxing holidays with your family and friends.
I give mini gloves every year for many years. I will be wrapping in a tube from now on. Thanks Karen. As for wrapping in material, I had a panic attack thinking of using my stash. Lol! But then again, no sewers in my family. I made material bags twenty plus years ago and still use them. Everyone know if they are not going to reuse them, they must give them back. I had to buy wrapping paper this year(kids now have partners) so I should make more. Merry Christmas Karen and to all the sewing community🎄😀
Thank you so appropriate I'm going to try some of these I have a lot of tiny gifts to give as I'm giving only Christmas tree ornaments to the kids next year I might make the ornaments but this year I bought them so now I could maybe put the material on that to bag them up or whatever I really enjoy your program and watch it very often thank you for putting it on
Brilliant! Our family has been using tea towels for a number of years now but this is the ultimate! Little late for me this year but next year for sure. Thank you

My favorite gift that I wrapped was a mixer wrapped in contact paper as it came out of the roll. Then the "ribbon" was crocheted as a chain with a quick "flower". I don't know where I got the flower pattern unfortunately.
Oh, my family and friends already "rotate" the bags in which we exchange the gifts and the easter baskets too. That will be same with the fabrics. But here in Germany reusage is more common I think. Are you in the US?
