MJ worshipped Jackie. He always said he studied Jackie, James Brown, and Astaire. When Michael spoke about black artists not getting paid properly for their work, he repeatedly mentioned Jackie. Michael Jackson honored Jackie Wilson at the 1984 Grammy Awards Jackson dedicated his Album of the Year Grammy for Thriller to Wilson, saying, "In the entertainment business, there are leaders and there are followers. And I just want to say that I think Jackie Wilson was a wonderful entertainer...Jackie, wherever you are I want to say I love you and thank you so much."

And this was was Elvis"s first.. he did it in concert. This video shoes no where near the talent of Elvis Presley! Look at the video , did Micheal Jackson copy elvis presley. It shows Elvis did the moon. Walk first, in concert ( both side side ways and backwards that MJ was given so mucredit fot)Elvis could still a crowd to hear a pin drop with gospel in concert. Michel couldn't. The. Toe. Toe thing was Elvis, the jumpers Micheal started out in were Elvis, down the way he held his fingers out when he sang, all of his clothes, falling in to the floor and coming up was Elvis, Elvis true range was phenomenal. That's why he's in all halls of fame.. I'd love to try and hear mj sing ' if I can drean". Mj sang q song at the grammys and almost past out. Elvis did 2 90 shows a min that included songs that used his entire body. And by the way his movements conducted his drummer, horns and back up Singers. The man was a prodigy. Even the great Pavarotti called him one. You want to hear his range listen to Danny boy, crying in the chapel, how great thou art live...the power. There's nothing like it. Oh, and he's even studied in college music classes. Those of you who don't know Elvis best, don't know Elvis career and didn't know this was fixed to look bad. Oh, and in concert watch, the highest parts on the songs are sang by the drummer. Freddy sings them in part. But Drummer mostly. Do yourself a favor and realize, without bias, he was the first. Watch Did Michael Jackson copy elvis presley, (even down to putting sounds and stupid words in songs)Elvis in the black community part 1 and 2, the kind Elvis. Then realize what he did for civil rights. His charity almost broke him. The 50 million that video talks about, consider inflation. Then let's talk about free concerts that wasn't included in that, homes he bought for people he didn't know, mortgages he paid off.. yeah I'll stack him up against Micheal any day of the week!

Had Jackie known this would last through history he would have said no. This didn't even come close to the music accompaniment that was the original record.
True story....Jackie was performing in the mid-sixties in California, two shows sat and sun, but was having trouble selling tickets. So Elvis told one of his crew to let it be known he was going to go to both shows. The shows then sold out and Elvis was at both shows taking a break from shooting a movie and keeping his word.
Jackie in an interview once said he always thought he would be a DJ. When asked if he had one hour on the radio to play whatever he wanted Jackie said he would play nothing but Elvis. Jackie has been quoted as saying nobody sings blues better than Elvis. They were great friends.

There is something about Jackie that automatically puts a big smile on my face. Is it his snapping fingers, his incredible dance moves, or his vocal gymnastics? It's all that & more.

There was nothing like Jackie, though he seems a little hoarse here. Sam Cooke is the most influential vocalist of the Pop/R&B era, but everyone stole Jackie's stage act. Anyone that plays with a mike stand imitates him. I once saw him start by playing with the stand by rocking it forward and back toward him. He then pitched it forward so far that when it came back to him it fell to the ground. He did a spin, fell to his knees and caught it before it hit the floor in his hand, with his knees under him, back on the floor, perfectly at his mouth, never missing the beat or the lyric. Try him doing "To Be Loved", also on The Ed Sullivan Show. Incredible range, power and vocal flexibility. Mr. Excitement, Jackie Wilson. On the Ed Sullivan Show, all of the acts had to perform live. Another excellent reaction. When Jackie went into a coma (which lasted 7 years) Elvis paid for most of his hospital bills, Dick Clarke paid for his plot and tombstone.

@@redddbaron Yes. Nothing close. Before the age of 12 I saw over 200 live music acts, starting at the age of 3 years old. I saw Smokey Robinson 5 times, The Tempatations 3 times, Marvin Gaye, Little Anthony and The Imperials 5 times, The Supremes twice, Jay and the Americans 3 times, Tony Williams and the Platters, Clyde McPhatter, Ben E. King and many, many more. Not only could Jackie sing light opera but he could sing pop, R&B, R&R, gospel, and standards...and this has nothing to do with his stage act which everyone stole from. When he was informed that James Brown had stolen much of his stage act (as best as he could) Jackie just shrugged. That kind of stuff was unimportant to him---and as I mentioned, everyone that you see that plays with the microphone stand and the microphone cable stole from Jackie. Now yes, everyone that sings R&B, and R&B/Pop, copied from Sam Cooke who invented the idea of the "soul" singer, but the idea of the dynamic performer, the athletic singer/crooner, that was Jackie. Jackie collapsed on stage of a heart attack in 1975 and remained in a coma until 1984. A sad end to the man I believe is the greatest singer to come out of the early R&R era.

Elvis"s estate even paid the bills after Elvis"s death. This was per his son. His son also stated how when Jackie couldn't fill a room,or other black artists couldn't fill a venue, Elvis would call his buddies and head to the venue. He knew the singers were great and their race was the problem. But Elvis knew where he went, and people followed. And people figured if he was going to listen, they had to be great. Elvis would go, sit up front, leave before the end so the artist would get due credit. This was all per Jackie's son.

Regarding TV performances, I remember seeing Herman’s Hermits on some daytime show years ago and the instruments were clearly not being played. When Peter Noone came to the mic, he clapped along with the music before he started singing. I realized that he did that to show that the vocals were live.
And, on topic, Jackie was a great performer.

Dude! Too bad you never got the chance to see him live. Watching him on tv just doesn’t capture the excitement of his live performances. The first concert I ever saw featured him and the women, both black and white, went CRAZY. He did splits, toyed with the microphone (lots of people, including Prince, copied that) and when he swung his jacket around pretending like he was going to throw it into the audience the women were frantically grabbing for it (I’m sure they would had ripped it to shreds had he done that) he then threw it over his shoulder as he did here. It’s a performance I will never forget. The Four Seasons were the headliners of that concert and they were very popular at the time but even they were afraid to go on after him. They let Jackie finish the opening half of the show and then there was a slight intermission after which the Seasons finished the second half. I was fortunate enough to get to meet him once but was too shy to say anything other than “Hi” but it was a thrill nonetheless.

I still never tire of listening to him (and watching his moves!); I often wonder during performances whether they are live or not. when there is no band apparent it's hard to tell. thank you for describing how it was done here live! when you refer to chart number do you mean in England or USA? Hep, hep!

Jackie and Sam Cooke, two of the greatest pop voices of all time. I'm surprised you didn't mention Reet Petite, that song revived in the 80's in the UK after being used in a commercial that posthumously shot him to #1. Please ca you do another video on Jackie he was so unique vocally I'm sure you could do at least one more.

Fil, This was one of my favorites that you have done. That is a tragic story of an artist totally screwed over by someone in the business. Thank you for this tribute. As someone who hate lip-syncing, I'm glad that you explained that the performance was live and that the mic was out of view.

I believe even James Brown said he was influenced by Jackie's moves.
Here's a video analysis suggestion Fil. Do an analysis of one of the great precursor's of rock n roll and someone Chuck Berry said he admired, Louie Jordan. He started his own movie company to promote his music with music videos, called soundies back in the 1940's. Now I don't know if any of those videos could be considered live performances; though they're a lot of fun to watch, but I have seen one really good live video from a French TV appearance Louie did in 1974. Unlike other Louie Jordan TV performances, the song's rhythm isn't being pushed to the point of ruining the song. Look for Louie Jordan - There Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens (Live 1974). Plus, you get to see some great interaction between Louie and members of his band. Actually, here's a link for Fil or anyone else who would like to check it out. th-cam.com/video/KUNQl5sanHM/w-d-xo.html

There's absolutely nothing you could want from a singer that Jackie couldn't do. No other r&b, rock or pop singer had his vocal abilities. He simply was the best you'll ever hear, with all due respect to Sam Cooke and the great Tony Williams of the Platters.

As a West Indian person who loves music of the black diaspora, I’m so happy you are analyzing Jackie Wilson. He would have been a hit on the Chitlin circuit and the Apollo. Black people like myself are hard on our artistes, which is why they were so exceptional in the past because we’ll boo you if you’re trash. By the way those noises were not done for white audiences but were done for black ones. Even when we speak as blacks we can have short convos without words. I love your TH-cam channel by the way, please never stop. Luv from Trinidad 🇹🇹

He most certainly was the MJ of his time. Mr. Excitement predated Motown and helped establish R&B as a legit musical art form. Like many others of that era, he was taken advantage of by his agent and his record company. However you can see his pure talent on display here and that can never be taken away.

This performance by Jackie Wilson is beyond analyzing or breaking down….Mr.Excitement…Was like Elvis and Michael…Naturally born with incredible talent….and charisma….Jackie talked about Elvis….When asked who he would listen to for an hour….. I f he had to pick someone…Jackie without hesitation said…Elvis Presley….Elvis was in awe of Jackie’s skill on stage….As was Michael….I am so blown away by this performance….Note….This was 1962….Elvis sang Return to Sender in 62….Supposedly Jackie was there when it was recorded for Girls…Girls….Girls….And some see mild similarities in Elvis’s dance moves….Great Channel!

Thanks Fil. What a sad end for such a talented man. I try not to wish ill on people, but I hope everyone in the record industry who robbed their hardworking and talented musicians had/have to answer for these crimes their afterlife. It makes me angry to know that musicians, who brought us so much joy with their music, were treated so very badly.
