  • Is the 1st Gen Honda CRV (RD1) the best budget and entry level overland vehicle that slipped under everyone’s radar?
    It’s not the most capable off-roader but with its combination of reliability and features suitable for overlanding, you may want to take a second look after this video.
    The 1st Gen CRVs were made from 1995-2001. The one in this video is a 2001 Honda CRV LX with AWD.
    Do you agree or disagree? Let me know in the comments!!

    I loved my ‘99 so much, I bought a ‘98 as well. Ended up with a 2000 parts car as well! Completely rebuilt the front end of both my runners for about $400 each, including cv axles. Even figured out how to do my own alignment. Best running cars I’ve ever owned, and I’m in my ‘60s!

    Fun fact, you only HALF went into "Bed Mode" If you fold down the rear seats and click the lever on their side to elevate them, they line up with the front seats to make a HUGE sleeping area. I paid about $1k for my 00 CRV and its been a treat. 310k miles on the odo and still able to take it to the 4x4 beach or to some trails.

    • @Taeleus
      @Taeleus 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Side note, I'm finding out that not all CR-v's do this. Some back seats fold up from the crease then the back folds down. Mine elevate up like 20 degrees at the bench then fold the entire seat down. Odd thing to switchup for the same year and model haha. Mine doesnt have an armrest so maybe thats the differentiating factor.

      Yeah, only the 01s do this sadly..but you can get that seat bracket, shave some metal off and install it in the earlier versions! I haven't found a donor yet, but that's the plan with my 97..I did find the 01 back door panels with cup holders though

    I purchased a 5 speed 2000 Honda CRV from a friend of minds for $1,500. Its a pretty reliable vehicle's. I drive the piss out of it. Power shifts & all. The only parts that have failed on me is the A/C compressor, Main Relay & the ICM in the distributor. Im a Mechanic/ Honda Enthusiasts so i figured out all the issues with ease. I highly recommend solid motor mounts. The Driver side motor mounts are prone to fail...... Also another hidden gem is if you flip up the bottom or the rear seat, remove rear head rested then flip the back seat down you can create more rear storages..

    Nice video. I love budget builds. Here in Queensland Australia 🇦🇺 4wding is extremely popular, and people spend up to $200 000, on a vehicle and fitouts. Me, I have an sh forrester with 35mm lift springs, and 6% larger tyres @ 225/65/17. It is the top spec model w leather interior and electric sunroof. $10000 aus which is cheap for over here. I go to Fraser Island (worlds largest sand island) annually and it gets me as far up the island as I wish. Although I can't really pull out large vehicles when they are bogged in soft sand, I can wave to them as I drive by. It never gets bogged.

      Thanks for stopping by! I bet your forester has more off-road miles than a lot of dedicated off-road vehicles. Sometimes it a bit more fun taking these budget cars out on the trail as well as it forces you to think about lines and stuff like that.

  • @MondoMurderface
    @MondoMurderface หลายเดือนก่อน

    All the modding you have to do on it to make it anywhere near a jeep would bring it up in price pretty quick. But that said.. It's still likely cheaper over all but a lot more work. You really need to appreciate that 90s vaporwave look if you want to invest the time into it. I personally think these look sick.

    • @520overland
      @520overland  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well said! It all really depends on what you want to do with it. The forest road system in the US is massive and you could probably cover a large percentage of it in a CRV or any other cross over. However you’ll probably need to replace your suspension at lot sooner. If you want to get into rocks, deeper snow or loose sand than you might be asking to much of one of these. Thanks for watching!

    5:48, Blower motor, Blower motor Transistor, AC Compressor, Piston Rings, Sunroof water Leak, RUST, Power Window motor Failure, Sunroof Motor failure, Ignition coil failure, Valve stem seals go bad, Automatic gearbox is bad design, Rear Differential uses ONLY HONDA type oil, Catalitic convertor goes after 120.000 miles, Missfire codes P0170 and P0171, VACCUUM leaks and i almost forgot IMPORTANT !!! SRS UNIT has a recall, if not replaced the AIRBAG is POTENTIALY DEADLY in car crash as metal pieces may fly in your face !!!

    • @520overland

      Most of these are for the 2nd gen CRV. The got the whole Black Death thing going on for AC systems. Window motor failures are pretty common on any old car. Valve stems go bad if valves are adjusted which is required maintenance. Haven’t heard to many bad things about the auto transmission except that they are geared too high. Rust is pretty common on any 20 year old car. The Catalytic converter is more likely to be stolen before it fails. Vacuum leaks are more common with k series Hondas than the b series in 1st gen’s. Yeah the 2001 1st gen or 2002 2nd gen’s came standard with Claymores apparently
