I've been a Dutch fan of Marty since 1995, I was introduced to his music by a Welsh guy called Shakin' Stevens (who covered one of Marty's songs during his concerts in the early and mid 1990s). From then on I have bought every album that Marty released. I could go on and on why he's my favourite country artist, but I won't. There are a lot of pretenders and a lot of people who sell loads and loads more records than he does, but Marty is the real deal. An absolute legend in his genre!

excellent player, and comments. Marty Stuart was born about thirty miles from my hometown and is building a museum in that town( Philadelphia, Ms) with old stage costumes and instruments.
It's up and running and he did a video where artists like Keb' Mo' and Miranda Lambert came in and actually PLAYED those instruments and did one of the artist's songs. It was a moving and beautiful tribute. Miranda did a song by recently passed on John Prine. And Keb' Mo', how talented is HE, I dont listen to his music, so I didn't know, but he is great in multi genres. Don't miss it. Marty truly is a keeper of the old ways.
Another great video. I've never seen this one, but have been a great Marty Stuart fan since the 70s. He was very popular in the 90s and early 2000s, but his best music has been within the last 10-15 years. It's an amazing and rare thing to be asked to play in a band for one of the absolute kings of bluegrass (Lester Flat) and Marty was asked at just 14 years old! His talent was recognized even then. He's a fantastic artist, musician, and song writer but mostly he's a fantastic, down-to-earth person. Thanks for sharing and talking about Marty, I didn't expect to see him on your reviews.
I agree with everything you said here...and also, just think, Marty's wife, Connie, is just as sweet and talented as a vocalist as he is instrumentally. That is a much blessed household. Fil I first met Marty in 1974 in Oklahoma at a bluegrass festival when he was playing with Lester Flatt and the Foggy Mt. Boys. He was great when he was 14 and my favorite mandolin picker then and is now. Marty brought so many new things with his picking back then that a lot of mandolin pickers didn't have and that to me is what made him unique from all the others. He has refined it over the years thank Fil!
Marty is the lucky owner of one of the late, great Don Rich’s Fender Telecasters. Don Rich played with Buck Owens and virtually wrote the modern day language of country music electric guitar. Marty does a wonderful job carrying on this amazing tradition... Thank you for sharing as I have not visited Marty in a while! And now my face is melted again

Amazing musician & super nice guy. I've seen him 3 times, & for one of the concerts, I won front row seats & got to meet him too. We brought an signed old tour book from a Johnny Cash show in the 70s, & he said he was honored to sign under Johnny's autograph.
I really enjoy your videos and your approach to analysis. My Dad was a pro bluegrass and country picker from the 50's till the 70's. I grew up at bluegrass festivals and actually stood around at campfires at night to some of the best players on the planet. I evolved into rock music as a musician but have always appreciated these guys, the harmonies and musicianship is beyond next level.
I've seen Marty in concert three times, and have also met him. So gracious and kind! An astoundingly amazing musician. He's equally good on guitar. (He somehow got his hands on Clarence White's B-bender Telecaster guitar.) Thanks so much for recognizing one of the best in the business. Man, this was country back in the 80’s C&W has morphed into Southern rock to me...I heard a distorted guitar in so many songs on the local country station...I’m from Loretta Lynn, dolly, Reba, Porter Wagoner , and Tammy Wynette...that was country but the Carter family started it all...

Marty's a virtuoso. I would put his Telecaster playing up against anyone. He acquired Clarence White's Tele with the B Bender and Marty sure knows how to use it.
He is absolutely a good guitar and mandolin player. I love his style of playing. He just blows me away every time I hear him. I love most of his songs as well. EXCELLENT REVIEW! Yes, he was big in the 90s. But his best music has come out in the last ten years with Kenny Vaughn and the Fabulous Superlatives. I just bought their most recent release and it's just great. This was a real treat, Fil. Pete Anderson and Eddy Shaver soon??? Maybe????

Our first exposure to Marty's mandolin and the Superlatives was on his show on RFD-TV. They played "Runnin' Down a Dream" and I never tire of it. You may not know, Marty is a country music historian and collector. He knows everybody and has performed with most. Another fave, he wrote Waymore's Blues and there is a video on TH-cam playing it with Waylon Jennings.
Heard Marty and his band a few weeks ago (minus the drummer who lost his mom) but Marty did mention that trains are important to him and this is a like a speedy train song indeed. Coming down the tracks. Amazing player.
I've been a fan of Marty S. for a long, long time. I just happened to be listening to him play with The Byrds. Then I needed a Marty fix and turned to TH-cam. Love that you picked this example of his mastery on the mandolin. I believe he started playing and touring when he was 12 years old. I always loved the way he dressed. He plays a mean Tele too. What is even more amazing about all these older Artists is that they still have the use of the their hands/fingers after a lifetime of constant use. I would imagine these older Artists have to treat their hands, fingers and wrists like they were a Neurosurgeon!
That is such a good point. I have arthritis in both hands and have had carpal tunnel surgery. I too wonder how Marty or any musician looks after their hands.

Every time I see one of Fil's videos about fantastic country musicians and see how he reacts to them with such appreciation and joy, I think it would be a great thing if he would relocate to Nashville. I can just picture him sitting in on some of the impromptu sessions great Nashville musicians are involved in from time to time. They are there making music not because they are making money from that session...they aren't...but just because they flat love the music so much that if they stopped making music the very mountains would start making music to cover the deficit. I think Fil would fit into such a session quite well.
Hugely underrated musical talent, country music's biggest fan and historian, owning Hank Williams martin d-28, Clarence Whites telecaster, and took the last picture ever taken of Johnny Cash. Marty should be on the Mount Rushmore of not only country music, but American Music. Like Willie Nelson, he truly is a national treasure.

In my record collection I have an album by Lester Flatt called Live Bluegrass Festival. When introducing a song Lester says "This features our little mandolin picker, Marty Stuart, 15 year old from Philadelphia, Mississippi ". He burned it up way back then too! Marty's heyday may have been the '80s and '90s, but his last few albums with the Fabulous Superlatives are some of his finest. Most recent is Way Out West, produced by Mike Campbell, a great match. Thanks Fil.
It must have been 1973 when I was at Bill Monroe's Bean Blossom Bluegrass festival. Marty was 11 years old and being introduced to the world. His mandolin playing then was as good as this. Totally blew my mind. 11 years old. Now days he is killer on his Telecaster as well.
Once again Fil, great analysis on one of our most notable Nashville treasures! Marty had a TV show for a while that I used to follow pretty close, and he had a LOT of great musicians on there as well! That Gibson F5 mando that he plays is most likely older than I am, and has the sweetest tone!! I have a Michael Kelly F5 and while it sounds great, it will never match the tone and clarity of a well-aged and well-preserved Gibson! I'm pretty sure that thing was about to go *critical mass* towards the end there! I actually hadn't seen this video before, and the amount of concentration required to keep up that pace (and faster), for that amount of time, and not screw up, is monumental!!😍🎼😁👍👍

Ernest t. Bass - totally agree. Not into country so didn't discover him until I began streaming in 2014 after retiring. I sit in front of the computer and get caught up on You Tube treasure hunts all the time. I'm sorry he no longer has his little show.
My favorite of his albums is The Pilgrim. Observations of a Crow gives me the cold chills every time I hear it.

Our first exposure to Marty's mandolin and the Superlatives was on his show on RFD-TV. They played "Runnin' Down a Dream" and I never tire of it. You may not know, Marty is a country music historian and collector. He knows everybody and has performed with most. Another fave, he wrote Waymore's Blues and there is a video on TH-cam playing it with Waylon Jennings.

Heard Marty and his band a few weeks ago (minus the drummer who lost his mom) but Marty did mention that trains are important to him and this is a like a speedy train song indeed. Coming down the tracks. Amazing player.
I've been a fan of Marty S. for a long, long time. I just happened to be listening to him play with The Byrds. Then I needed a Marty fix and turned to TH-cam. Love that you picked this example of his mastery on the mandolin. I believe he started playing and touring when he was 12 years old. I always loved the way he dressed. He plays a mean Tele too. What is even more amazing about all these older Artists is that they still have the use of the their hands/fingers after a lifetime of constant use. I would imagine these older Artists have to treat their hands, fingers and wrists like they were a Neurosurgeon!

That is such a good point. I have arthritis in both hands and have had carpal tunnel surgery. I too wonder how Marty or any musician looks after their hands.

I am more of a visual person but I do listen to a lot of music while I work. You have opened my ears a lot wider. God help me , I’m in my 80s but you have made my musical world so much bigger……. Every time I see one of Fil's videos about fantastic country musicians and see how he reacts to them with such appreciation and joy, I think it would be a great thing if he would relocate to Nashville. I can just picture him sitting in on some of the impromptu sessions great Nashville musicians are involved in from time to time. They are there making music not because they are making money from that session...they aren't...but just because they flat love the music so much that if they stopped making music the very mountains would start making music to cover the deficit. I think Fil would fit into such a session quite well.

Hugely underrated musical talent, country music's biggest fan and historian, owning Hank Williams martin d-28, Clarence Whites telecaster, and took the last picture ever taken of Johnny Cash. Marty should be on the Mount Rushmore of not only country music, but American Music. Like Willie Nelson, he truly is a national treasure.

In my record collection I have an album by Lester Flatt called Live Bluegrass Festival. When introducing a song Lester says "This features our little mandolin picker, Marty Stuart, 15 year old from Philadelphia, Mississippi ". He burned it up way back then too! His skill shows through on the Telecaster too. Fil, I really appreciate how you look at all types if music. Great analysis!

It must have been 1973 when I was at Bill Monroe's Bean Blossom Bluegrass festival. Marty was 11 years old and being introduced to the world. His mandolin playing then was as good as this. Totally blew my mind. 11 years old.
Now days he is killer on his Telecaster as well.
Marty is one of my daughter's most favourite musicians!! He's off the charts on Mando!
Once again Fil, great analysis on one of our most notable Nashville treasures! Marty had a TV show for a while that I used to follow pretty close, and he had a LOT of great musicians on there as well! That Gibson F5 mando that he plays is most likely older than I am, and has the sweetest tone!! I have a Michael Kelly F5 and while it sounds great, it will never match the tone and clarity of a well-aged and well-preserved Gibson! I'm pretty sure that thing was about to go *critical mass* towards the end there! I actually hadn't seen this video before, and the amount of concentration required to keep up that pace (and faster), for that amount of time, and not screw up, is monumental!!😍🎼😁👍👍
