I've been watching a lot of Otis Gibbs' interviews. Many of them are with Kenny. One thing I've come to appreciate about him is that he seems to be, first and foremost, a true student of his craft. Like next level willingness to learn.
Yes. Without Otis, I wouldn't know who Kenny Vaughan was (I lean towards Beatles, Stones, Clapton, etc), and now he's one of my absolute favorite players.
thank for bringing the nuance & superb techniques displayed by KV on this track. -- I've only "discovered" and triedto uncover the secrets of his playing on the Marty Stuart television shows here on TH-cam. They're all amazing musicians and when you see them live you can see they're totally enjoying themselves, the audience sense that and it brings everything to a new level. Our band plays Hot Like That, it's a great number to perform, if I could only get to 10% of Kenny and Marty's skill level I'd be happy! Thanks for your video, I really like the format.
Love Marty..and his musicians...Marty Stuart was supposed to play at the Missouri State Fair last summer...but the Evil Covid-19 postponed the performance.....thanks Fil
I'd like to mention the bass player who often gets overlooked--Paul Martin. He's an excellent guitarist an incredible singer, he was a headliner earlier in his career and could easily be again. I don't know why he left Marty but he gave his professionalism in every performance.
Paul Martin married Oakridge boys Duane Allen’s daughter They have several children and they started their own band after Paul left Marty’s band Paul it is very talented he used to be the lead singer of exile many years ago when they were having problems in that group
Wow !! I was just watcing Kenny Vaughn earlier today on TH-cam. I'm glad you did an analysis on Kenny. He's good on the guitar !! Thank you Fil for another great analysis!! You will always be the very best !! 😎
Great analysis of some good Country pickin' Fil. Cousin Kenny Vaughn is a master of the Telecaster. Don't know if you noticed, but Marty Stuart is playing the original working prototype Clarence White/ Gene Parsons B-Bender Telecaster. Marty got the guitar from Clarence's widow, so Mr. Stuart is now it's custodian. Marty and his band "The Fabulous Superlatives" are quite a bunch of musicians. If you can find it out there in TH-cam land, there's a clip of Marty and the boys on the David Letterman Show. They feature a track from their album "Live From Studio B" (Letterman calls it "....Studio 8 " and Marty corrects him!) Didn't catch the name of the track but Kenny and Marty really let rip, playing lead and harmony. For some guitar breaks, they don't even look at each other but never miss a note. Just makes you smile and realise how good these guys are! Special mention for Marty and his enormous contribution to Country music. Great work Fil and many thanks. Stay safe and well.
Cousin Kenny is totally bad ass but so is Marty. Both guys are TOTAL bad asses because they know how to play their parts as the situation requires. Man for man, the talent level of this outfit is off the charts.
My friend met Marty Stuart in a pub last year in Manhattan. Said he was incredibly cool and gracious. Love when legends are just regular people. The pictures are epic.
Oh Man! How did I miss this?! Kenny Vaughan! Thank you thank you Fil for the recognition of this amazing guy! There is a video on youtube titled: "Marty Stuart on Letterman" of Marty and Kenny just shredding it and tearing up the audience and Dave. Would love to see your analysis on that, the song is from the Ghost Train Studio B Sessions album.
Saw the Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives in St. Louis at a small venue. They were and are the best! Thank you for exposing your subscribers to this band among bands!!!! If you ever have a chance to see them, go!!!
I first saw him with Lucinda Williams on the Car Wheels Tour. If I remember right, he was wearing a dark velvet suit with a mod haircut. He's got a different look and he's one of my favorite guitarists.
I've seen Marty and the Superlatives in concert before. Did the meet and greet and all the guys were so gracious to the fans. They seemed glad to see us and appreciated we came to see them play. Really nice people. Great analysis! Marty is such a fabulous musician, and hires only the best for his band. Thanks, Fil!
What a fun episode. The first time I saw Kenny was when he was part of Lucinda Williams' touring band in the late 90s and I was completely knocked out. Then I moved to Nashville and for years it was possible to see him for free three nights a week at Robert's Western World. He's an absolute freakshow of a player and he's got taste for days. The guy never makes a bad choice.
I'd have to say that Marty is a very smart business person and an excellent musician. He recognized Kenny's talent when he formed the band and it's still going strong because they play music people want to hear and are willing to pay to see the group. Also it appears that Kenny has the freedom to do his own thing with others. He is great.
Think I may have suggested this to you some time ago, maybe from your Glen Campbell analysis. These guys are true professionals. Marty's Superlatives are just that. Thanks for reviewing Kenny's technique 😎👍🎸
I just fell over with this . 😂 Nice picking I mean I’ve never heard anything like this one ,but the lyrics were hilarious 🤣. A lot of technique in there for sure !
This was fabulous, Fil! I recently watched your vid on Ernest Tubb, that, too, was fab! Yes, Marty & his boys are really awesome, & Kenny is sooo good on that guit! Thanks for bringing Country to the forefront for us fans! You break it down really well, too. This is a great vid from the Midnight Jamboree, love the song! 🎸🎤🎶
Marty's TV series he had on RFD is on You Tube. They focus on his band's performances with the band backing up his many guest stars. That led me to see Marty and the Fabulous Superlatives live at a local venue. Kenny's playing is indeed fabulous usually with a more-or-less traditional Telecaster tone. Marty has a somewhat hotter tone and with his Tele B -bender really stands out. My kind of country.
Kenny is just such a cool guy. Have been trying to emulate his guitar style lately and this video is a wow moment for me. Thank you Fil, for the great demonstration, I can't wait to get started on learning from it.
I really love the way you vary your videos. It’s evident you are a lover of the Guitar. Not just any particular style of Guitar Music. I'm basically a Rock Head too but, I just love Guitar in general. I believe a person can learn from any style or genre. In your videos, (I’m a Subscriber), I have seen everyone from Mark Farner, Glen Campbell, Roy Clark, Phil Keaggy, Jerry Reed, Frank Marino, Chet Atkins, (“Sweep Picking” before I EVER hear any of the Thrash Shredders do it), Vernon Reid, Marty Stewart, etc… Your videos cover a wider field of Genres than any other Analyst that I’ve watched. It’s good to see you back after your illness. Keep up the good work.
As you say Fil, super technique, that comes not just from innate talent, but years of practicing and playing. I saw a great interview with Kenny in which he talks of having guitar lessons even in fairly recent times! This class of musician is always learning and it goes to show that however good you are you can always get better!
Great Analysis Fil of a top notch Band! Really have to appreciate the great Level of playing these guys achieve. I think a Heavy Metal player will appreciate this video and how great these musicians are,
Hands down one of the best bands out there. Two premier level guitarists. I heard Kenny in an interview saying he is a big Grateful Dead fan and he followed them around to their concerts in his younger years.
Saw Marty Stuart as the opening act for Chris Stapleton. He and his band were thoroughly professional and spot on with their timing. Stapleton and his band, by contrast, were disorganized, amateurish and looked like they were living under a bridge. I and my date left the concert early.
I have a Washburn guitar that Marty Stewart signed for me. It plays better than I expected. Marty is a special person. Talented but not always recognized for it.
If anyone wants to learn more about how seriously Kenny Vaughan takes his guitar playing, and how long he's been playing in many different styles, listen to the Ask Zac and True Tone Lounge interviews with him. For Kenny telling great stories, check him out on Otis Gibbs' channel. Love Fil's analysis here, too, though!
First time i saw K.V. was way back when he was in Lucinda William’s backing band on the dvd Live from Austin Texas along with James Jameson on slide/lead guitars. A great band plus Lucinda’s punk country/blues delivery. It’s on you tube if you haven’t already watched it, several great guutar solos/ interchanges between Kenny and James well worth a view
I recently saw an interview with Kenny Vaughan in which he talks about this band's Letterman appearance - he says the Letterman house band couldn't believe he and Marty didn't use ANY pedals! Just Teles straight into small Fender amps
in 2011 Marty and the Superlatives were on the David Letterman show. Marty and Kenny play "Country Boy Rock-n-Roll" . It's hot and fast and reall showcases Kenny....It's on TH-cam....You'll enjoy it
I know you said you weren’t going to do a tutorial of the tune, but the parts you did focus on genuinely helped me a bit on my journey (struggle) to get the feel of this music. It seems to me it’s not so much the notes/scales you play as much as it is the timing and feel. Thanks for focusing on this tune. I’ll be looking for more of their tunes to study.
I love that they have a cardboard cutout of Hank Williams in their lineup. The musos in this band are the best in the business and this rockabilly music shows the link between country, blues, jazz and rock n roll.
I had the pleasure of seeing Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives in concert at the Avalon Theatre in Grand Junction Colorado. Their performance was so awesome, Kenny Vaughan can play the phone book 😊❤
Great stuff. Many thanks, Fil. Kenny's guitar playing (and singing) here is fantastic. And Chris Scruggs' playing is wonderful, too. Some parts of Kenny's solos remind me of Danny Cedrone's solo in 'Rock Around The Clock' - genius.

I mean I’ve never heard anything like this one ,but the lyrics were hilarious 🤣.
A lot of technique in there for sure !
That was so much fun to listen to. I'm gonna replay but this time I'll have to flip the Fender on and jam along. Real Fun Time. Thank You Sir...
Thanks, Fil, for showcasing my favorite unknown guitar player. He's the best Tele player I know. Thanks again for bring us your great analyses videos.
Both Kenny and Marty are outstanding guitarists, both on acoustic and Tele guitars.
I absolutely love Marty Stuart. They are really good. Love this..
we got tickets to see them in Key West Feb 20 .....so psyched ...we just love them and their musical prowess
Top players indeed! im always awe struck at Marty and the guys , always makes me want to learn more styles and techniques .
I come from the 'A drummer's best friend is a musician' school, but I feel obliged to say your vids are superb
Thanks!
I tune in to those reruns now and then, Marty and that band are fantastic. They can do justice to any song out there and then some.
Rfd ?
@@PatrickKingPhlYes; RFD TV; a station that caters to farmers. Great programming.

Kenny is a killer. Missed you when I got me new iPhone. Great to be back.
Kenny is just such a cool guy. Have been trying to emulate his guitar style lately and this video is a wow moment for me. Thank you Fil, for the great demonstration, I can't wait to get started on learning from it.
We saw Marty and the band in Albuquerque recently. Awesome show!
Marty Stuart and his band are some of the BEST in Country Music! Kenny Vaughan is awesome!
Thanks!
As you say Fil, super technique, that comes not just from innate talent, but years of practicing and playing. I saw a great interview with Kenny in which he talks of having guitar lessons even in fairly recent times! This class of musician is always learning and it goes to show that however good you are you can always get better!
I’m a huge Kenny fan also that man can play some awesome surf guitar
Kennys' interviews / stories are as good as his playing. His punk day albums are also worth checking out.
Fil Great stuff! Glad to see you highlight Kenny. Great player. Thanks
Great Analysis Fil of a top notch Band! Really have to appreciate the great Level of playing these guys achieve. I think a Heavy Metal player will appreciate this video and how great these musicians are,
Just adore you! Thanks for doing what you do💛✌
Hands down one of the best bands out there. Two premier level guitarists. I heard Kenny in an interview saying he is a big Grateful Dead fan and he followed them around to their concerts in his younger years.
Love to listen to Kenny and Chris !! So much talent
Can’t do better then that ! Thanks Fil .
Country line dancing came to mind 😁🤠
Fil, thanks for another great analysis video 🖤🤘🏽
Saw Marty Stuart as the opening act for Chris Stapleton. He and his band were thoroughly professional and spot on with their timing. Stapleton and his band, by contrast, were disorganized, amateurish and looked like they were living under a bridge. I and my date left the concert early.
Out of humility, and respect for the Superlatives, I would refuse any gig that made me follow them. You're just asking to look bad.
I had the same experience when I took my daughter to see Frank Turner open for Jason Isbell. Isbell and Stapleton or both good….. But
I have a Washburn guitar that Marty Stewart signed for me. It plays better than I expected. Marty is a special person. Talented but not always recognized for it.
Anyone who really knows music recognizes Marty's talent. 🎶
Yes he’s not given the note Notoriety he deserves
@@jackjones2381 And always a professional. Very nice guy from my encounter.
Check his signature more closely - it's Stuart.
Saw Kenny play with Marty here in Texas about a month ago. Really good guitarist!
in 2011 Marty and the Superlatives were on the David Letterman show.
Top notch band. So damn tight.
Kenny Vaughn does some interesting interviews and tells some wicked tales about other musicians.
I love that they have a cardboard cutout of Hank Williams in their lineup. The musos in this band are the best in the business and this rockabilly music shows the link between country, blues, jazz and rock n roll.
Peter I think the cutout on stage is Ernest Tubb.
I had the pleasure of seeing Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives in concert at the Avalon Theatre in Grand Junction Colorado. Their performance was so awesome, Kenny Vaughan can play the phone book 😊❤
Excellent demonstration! Nice performance going here. I get a slight rockabilly feel to this one.
I love it makes you want to go dancing. And I love Marty Stuart I could see he was enjoying himself.
I’m learning even what may sound “straightforward , easy “, is usually more complex. “Melting our faces “. Damn, he’s melting that fret board.
I saw this lineup at you guessed it! HSB Golden Gate Park San Francisco! One of the best performances I have ever seen!
Met Marty at a summer bluegrass festival near Cincinnati in 1976 when he was about 17 and a member of Lester Flatts band.
This is my original quote. Kenny Vaughan is the Mike Campbell of Country Music!
I love watching them with their massive talent, acting like goofballs,so much fun they are having.
