WOW. You completely nailed that - I love the guitar solo harmonies!
Gale - my DEAR friend... You have (and I do not HOW you could have) outdone yourself. In fact You have outdone the original. I always thought this song was not "complete" vocally and that the middle 8th was (l being honest) ."BAD". It is a plaintive (sad, mournful) melody that clashes with the "Free as a bird" theme. The rumor was that Paul wrote the whole middle 8th but I found that would not be typical of Paul to loose the sense of linear thinking. I found later that it was indeed John who wrote that dismal mid 8th.just mumbling a "fill in place holder" (and it is in fact plagiarized from the 1964 "Walking In The Sand" by the Shangri-Las') and that the rest of the "boys", respected John's mess, which fucked up the song). Also to "ME" the vocals were adequate at best , the harmonies did not sound full, ( think Paul is THERE but buried in a crappy mix) but you magician you .... at 0:58 GOT IT! Every time I hear you doing something like this I wonder if "anyone" has told Macca.. "Paulie , you gotta hear this guy!"

This sounds like George. The slide guitar, diminished chord progressions, and especially "always made me feel so free" refrain sounds just like his later songs.
This gave me chills.....just like the original did the first time I heard it! Absolutely a piece of musical art!

I'm always interested in knowing which Beatle sang which part, especially if they've all four contributed vocals. It says on Wikipedia and 'Beatles Bible' that Paul, George, and Ringo all contributed backup vocals for Free As a Bird, and it's easy to find Paul and George's lines, but I can't pick out Ringo's voice. Any idea which harmony part he does?
I'm a bit lost on that too.

Fabulous to see and hear this classic Beatles song, lovingly broken down and put together again. In my opinion it's still one of their best pop rock songs and reflects what they could have achieved had they stayed together in the 70s, ELO probably would not have existed in that case!
George & Paul on the harmonies (as they were on Here Comes The Sun, John was not on that recording) Ringo on percussion, he rarely was on harmonies, Paul with the first middle eight and George rounding off nicely his solo vocal and definitive slide guitar.
The demo by John done in 77 at The Dakota which the Beatles release used is magical in itself and worth a listen too. th-cam.com/video/3U2Gd64IfgE/w-d-xo.html

Galleazzo, were you able to discern which vocal strains were provided by John, Paul, and George? I'm assuming the basic song is John and Paul did most of the flourishes that create the harmonies. Is George in the vocal arrangement at all?
PRR5406 I think so but i't very different to distinguish them due to the particular recording.
PRR5406 Let me add something . As I mentioned I did not think "Free as a Bird" was "stellar" recording by The Beatles but digging in I found that the original tape was a mess. John was off tempo , off key and had a place holder for the middle 8th. The cleaning of the cassette wiped out most "presence" of John's vocals so Paul HAD to reinforce John's original vocals (easily doing Paul's Lennon imitation) So Lennon is there vocally with the help of Paul, but all three living Beatles were credited with Vocals (lead and harmonies) . On this video by Gale at the 0:58 mark Paul does a very Beatleish vocal figure but in the original is practically buried, Gale brings it out as I am assuming they would have wanted it. There's really no breakdown as to who sang what (But I can not hear Ringo in the original AT ALL) . Paul took the bulk of the vocals but was limited by John's voice (it was John REALLY just playing around so there was no need to "hit a note"). George & Ringo contribution was to "sound like THEM" (The Beatles) and that was exactly what Ringo said after mastering "It sounds like THEM" . Such is the respect of each of the individuals. To THEM The Beatles was a UNITY and they personally were four fans of Beatle-Paul, Beatle-John, Beatle-George & Beatle-Ringo.
+PRR5406 One of the verses and choruses is definitely sung/led by George. I believe the last verse is his

Main verse, opening was John, verse 2, Paul, verse 3 the smallest, was George. Harmonies were Paul, George and Ringo looped.

Wonderful tutorials! But here, I see that there are 3 parts for the lines “free as a bird” and “home and dry.” I hear the melody, but not the two harmony parts. Were the harmonies omitted? And how do the last 3 repetitions of “free as a bird” go at the very end of the original song? I don’t see them here.
