On "My Car Story" we're at the Minnetonka Drive In in the Suburbs of Minneapolis MN on 6-2-22.
We're looking at a 1967 Pontiac LeMans in Cameo Ivory Paint. The car comes with the factory 230 CI engine OHC6, and an automatic transmission.
The car's Owner is Mike Atlas. Mike’s had this car since 2021. Mike shares he used to have a Sprint 6 when he was a young man, and wanted to find another one. After several years of searching, he finally found this car. Great work staying focused to meet your goal of finding the car you wanted.
    ENJOY!

LOU, these were rare because the 4 bbl version cost just as much as the Pontiac v8s. THIS engine was REALLY needed in the 70s gas crunch. GM lack of foresight came to bite them in the but. DeLorean even had v8 versions of this ready to be mass produced, and were on the cover of Hot Rod magazine in the late 60s.

These engines, geared with a 3.90 gearing could actually jump Chevy 327s. They really needed an overdrive transmission to go with it.

Hi, Lou! The Pontiac OHC six was engineered by none other than John DeLorean and was first available in 1966, available on all Tempest and LeMans models, except that wagons couldn't have the higher output four-barrel version. DeLorean developed it to be both high performance and economical, but it didn't really catch on at a time when nearly everyone wanted V-8s, so it was dropped after 1969. Seems Mike knows now as he did back then that this is something special and unique enough that he doesn't need a GTO! We the fans of this channel thank him for being proud enough to show it off for us!

Delorian actually had a 3 valve v8 version of these that were in the works. They were on the cover on a Late 60's HOt Rod magazine looking ready to be mass produced. One of the great automotive tradegies that never happened. a 3 valve OHC 421/428 would have been a rocket.

Thats a very rare car....I looked for years for a Sprint motor to put in a 70 LeMans I had. I visited every junkyard and car field with old cars in 3 states (this was pre internet ). Most people I talked to never even heard on one, those that did had never seen one. I finally gave up sold the body and moved on with a different project.

I had a 1966 with a 326 White over red interior. Console and buckets...40k original miles out of San Dimas California. It was perfect. I paid 2200 bucks for it in 1992. Still had the original exhaust in it. Lost my storage and had to sell it. My dads 1968 Tempest had this 250 OHC 6 with a 2 barrel. Couldn't kill that motor. Great Le Mans ! Thanks for posting Lou ! OK. Good explanation. You could get these with a 4-speed so was very curious as to why the clutch was floored. I would think that the transmission swap would devalue the car. Agree - I would pony up to restore the original transmission - no question.

The 230 OHC came in Tempest's as well as Firebird... when I was a kid I knew a guy with a 67 Firebird with the four barrel engine. It was very impressive for a six and the cars handling was very nimble compared to the V-8's....I was so impressed that I recently took a professionally rebuilt 230 as partial payment for a debt owed to me.... it's sitting in my garage right now.
I think it will make a great engine for a Speedway Nostalgia T...... That's the first Le Mans I've seen with a six.
The Sprint option had higher compression and stronger cam , as well as the four barrel and dual exhaust manifold.
The Sprint will touch 7,000 rpm's.
Edit; the rubber cam belt designed by Pontiac engineers was the world's first.... nowadays they're everywhere.

It threw a rod on a family vacation, so Mom and my 5 sisters stayed at a motel w/ pool, but Dad/ me /2 brothers spent 2 days at a wrecking yard swapping motors, and he got an OHC poncho 6 cyl out of a Firebird and dropped it in.
He loved that motor! Any time they had friends over - up went the hood and the guys stood around shaking their heads at a 6 cyl w/ a 4 bbl card!

Pontiac only made the OHC straight 6 from 1966-1969. It didn't sell in sufficiently large numbers to justify continuing it and GM removed its 400 cubic inch restriction on intermediate cars in 1970 so larger engines became the most economical way to get more horsepower.

It was only available for two years, 1967-68 due to reliability issues, which subsequent technology has worked out the bugs in the engine. Jay Leno owns one of these and he loves it!

Back in 1969 I bought a 1967 Pontiac Le Mans Sprint with the OHC 6 under the hood, I was the 2nd owner. It was Medium blue, white vinyl roof, with white interior, bucket seats and consul. It also had a 3 speed with a factory Hurst shifter on the consul. The wheel covers were wire wheel look-a-likes with spinners. This was in Medford, Oregon. It was 100% factory stock when I owned it except for the "Mach 1" hood pins with keeper cables that I installed. It was a real chick magnet! Has anyone out there in Oregon ever seen that car? I sure hope that it is still on the road as it was sure a beauty.

Timing belts failing prematurely can be a symptom of incorrectly installation or an oil leak degrading the belt. Belts that aren't tensioned correctly can fail prematurely.

Beautiful car Lou. You don't see many of them around. Not sure if production numbers were low on them or what, but this brings back memories. I was maybe 10 or 11 years old at a car show in Midwestern Oklahoma and a car like this same year and color actually parked beside my dad's 55 Chevy BelAir at a show and my Uncle had a 67 GTO convertible at the time and when I seen the Lemans I thought it was a GTO that someone put at 6 cylinder in for some reason. My Uncle took me back and forth between the Lemans and his GTO showing me how to tell the difference between a Lemans and a GTO. Great memories

This was John DeLorean's true vision, the OHC inline-6. He wanted handling and performance from these cars akin to European cars like Jaguar. Of course John developed the GTO and was stuffing Tempests and LeManses with big V8s from Pontiac's full sized cars in secret garages so the upper management of PMD and GM wouldn't find out until it was too late, but this was part of his vision too. The inline-6 is inherently smoother and better balanced than a V8, and it's smaller and narrower sized reduced the weight of these cars, and brought their center of gravity more to the center of the car.

Joe, FALSE. John Delorean's dream was a large engine in a Lemans body and GTO was an option package. GM executives damn near fired him for doing that. John Delorean had already sold/delivered 5000 units and had confirmed orders for 10,000 more. GM executives ate some "crow" after that. John Delorean also created the Pontiac Grand Prix model car.

I dropped the same engine with the Carter 4bbl and cast iron headers into my 68 GTO. I bolted right up. I used the same 4 spd (M21?) tranny and rear end. Not the same as the 400ci V8 for sure but it ran well and was different! Nice LeMans.

Jay Leno has a Firebird Sprint with the same engine. He had the rocker arms replaced because the original were badly worn, and it sounds like this is about the same. You may want to check out his blog ands what he did. Evidently these engines run with fairly low oil pressure and with the new rockers he was able to also increase the oil pressure without any side effects. These are really rare engines, a De Lorean design.

I had a 1967 LeMans Sprint with a set of factory headers. The car Colo was the Sea Green with a white vinyl top and white interior. Unfortunately, the cam went out and destroyed the motor. I restored the car ground up. I installed disc brakes on all four wheels. I installed a Corvette LT 350. Then I repainted the car Torch Red. I put a black GTO interior in the car. I replaced the vinyl top with a black top. I eventually sold the car for a flip.

Motor Trend ran a article about a Tempest with this engine, or, more probably, the regular 2 barrel variant, several years down the road, in the June 1974 issue, if the memory is functioning properly. I will tell you that the article was as much about the owner's reasoning, or lack thereof, for buying the car. Car magazines used to be like that...

Yes the 1967 Firebird OHC Six Sprint. DeLorean tried hard with this formula, but GM engineering didn't have enough time to work out the bugs in the engine design to bring it to market, so it failed Consumer Reports testing and was grounded in mid-1968.

If this had a 4-speed or even a 3-speed manual, it could have been something special. With a TH300 2-speed automatic(originally introduced by Buick as a ST300), made it a boulevard cruiser. It was easy to swap in a TH350 and make the car go.
