I think they both missed Bragg's quiet cunning that is revealed during the convoy mission. Gaunt put him in charge just because everyone thought he is a dumbass. But during the mission it's reveal that he is quite smart and able to figure out who was the traitor and being ready to respond to any attack from him. He just hides his quiet intelligence because it's easier.

Re "stealth bagpipes". There was an old snippet in a white dwarf (can't remember more specifically I'm afraid), with a bunch of space wolf scout model's and a sergeant or something. The models were all posed brandishing their weapons over their heads. The image was captioned "but brother Ragnar, don't you think someone will hear us?"...

Yeah, these were in Inferno!, which was a warhammer fiction anthology that went for around 47 issues I think. I think they took reader submissions back then. It also had comics that wound up later in warhammer monthly.

Fantasy Flight's Imperial Guard RPG "Only War" had a great part of every mission where you have to roll and see if you got all your requisitioned gear or not. There was a super fun table for random crap that you didn't want/need and then having to try to pawn it off on other squads. A 01 roll (on d100) was a crate of Ogryn Sized marching band uniforms if I recall right...

One thing I like about the Ghosts series is seeing Dan spread his wings. When I read the first story in the old Inferno anthology in the late 90s.(where the stories from this book were first published), I found it enjoyable, but all the characters felt a bit trope-y. Mind, it was Dan's first published prose work, and I think he and GW's prose department needed to find their identity. It's endlessly fascinating to see how he put relationships on their heads and developed (or ahem, gets rid of) cliched characters in the course of the following novels....

I did a breakdown video of this book a little while ago, I loved the little snapshots that show each characters skills, but I was also quite annoyed that not all those characters got to feature in the finale battle on Monthax, and Dorden isn't even mentioned at the end!
It is still one of my favourites, along with the other 15 books, all my favourites.
The one thing I'd really like (And I've said this before) is a second Ghostmaker for the Verghast characters.
And don't worry, these are the main characters, they never die...

Most (all) the short stories were written for inferno magazine with no idea if he'd ever get another.
From what i remember your idea on Necropolis is backwards. By the time necropolis came around it was clear he was on to something and had to find a way to add some more bodies since he'd already killed so many of them in the shorts.

The Night Lords are amazong indeed. For years I thought Evil Marines with Lightnings Painted On Their Armour were tacky, and along came ADB and worked his magic.
As for horror 40k - I think I should mention Only In Death from the Ghosts series which is a nice horror piece. I like it when 40k leans into horror because they often go for the gothic and spooky instead of the splattery (the war stories have that anway).
Some others I enjoyed were The Colonel's Monograph by Graham McNeil (quite gothic) and Dark Harvest by Josh Reynolds (for an AoS horror novel).

Waitwaitwaitwait! Mira ranks Lucius as her top 3 bastard scale?!
That... that can only mean she's a sweet, pure summer child who hasn't met the true bastards yet... Fabius Bile, anyone. Vekt, or in fact, anyone in the Dark Eldar society? Homonculi in particular. Luther? LORGAR?! And that's just the top of my head.
Seeing Helldane's downfall from Isenhorn era to Gaunt's Ghosts' is one hell of a bastard slide as well.

Apropos of nothing, here's my fan casting of the ghosts.
Gaunt: My choice is Daniel Craig. Plays serious well, has the gravitas.
    Corbec: Liam Neeson
Rawne: Benedict Cumberbatch. Sharp features and black hair.
Kolea: Nic Nolte. I just picture Kolea as looking like the most haggard man to ever exist.
Mkoll: Keanu Re...*cough* actually I'd pick a young Ed Harris.
Bragg: Vincent D'onofrio. A large man who I know can act the part as well as being enormous.
Larkin: Gary Busey. We need the skittishness, but also the melancholy as well
Cuu: Ryan Reynolds. Who has somewhere between the face that you want to fall in love with and the face you want to punch in equal measure.
Milo: Daniel Radcliffe. Mostly based on his build, I don't picture him as a physical match for the rest, although for some reason all the ghosts are tall, Abnett's description of Gaunt at two meters and 20 cm would put him at 7'2" feet.
    Caffran: A young Jason Statham
Tona Criid: Alecia Beth Moore Heart.
    Mkvenner: Adam Driver
I think Abnett's done more work for 40k than anyone, and he certainly writes humanity the best out of any of the other black library authors.

To each their own, but I absolutely love "Fulgrim" from the Horus Heresy, it's one of my favorite books in the series! What I absolutely hated was the short story "The Reflection Crack'd" in the Primarchs Anthology since it completely destroyed the possession aspect and the prospect for a redemption arc.

    Hi Ian & Mira!
Have you considered doing "The Emperor's Gift"?
It follows on from Ravenor & Inquisitor Lillith. :D

Didn’t anyone else get the Ogryn vibe from Bragg, like maybe he’s a Half-Ogryn.

Some details on the ice planet I found thermally dubious. Blood freezing on the surface of a wound? Sorry, you've already frozen to death, mate. If the surface of your skin is cold enough for ice to form the flesh underneath is not able to do the complicated functions required of flesh. I think Sr. Abnett was thinking of hoarfrost on a beard, which happens because of the gap of air between your skin and the tip of your beard hair.

I agree with Mira, Ghostmaker is probably the best of the 3. Necropolis is overrated but the praise is well earned. First and Only is forgettable to be honest.
