The dynamic of Ian being an old jaded 40k fan and Mira a new fan who still has hope in her eyes but slowly losing it everytime she learns about the grimdarkness of 40k is just fantastic.

Just finished the book, it was so freaking good! I was rooting for every single character in the squad. The relationships were unexpected in a book like this but I adored them as well :) I don't think I've ever cared so much about a tech adept. "I will see you again..." goosebumps. Praise the Omnissiah.
SporeQuest is of course a forthcoming GW release in which four different spores descend into a dungeon to infect Orcs, Goblins, Undead and Gargoyles with athlete's foot in pursuit of ancient magical treasures.
I lived this whole book. Hayward does such good work with detailed imagery that dosent feel tedious. She's able to give such deep detail about a scene, especially in a massive battle, with surprisingly little space needed. All of her characters feel so unique too, and they all got just the right amount of time focused on each of them to feel fleshed out The ending of this book felt a little... unconcluded for the characters. SPOILER START!! --- Also, Khan counting her remaining cheroots throughout the book would've made a really good 'countdown' to her dying, and I was expecting it for almost the whole time reading. It almost made me disappointed that she lived (as much as I love her character) when she had none left. Feels like a missed opportunity to give the ending more emotion if this is a one-off book. ---- SPOILER END!!

My introduction to warhammer was driving a paper mache cow halfway across america in college and my buddy whod just got his license two weeks before infodumping the history of the imperium and how dark eldar work the entire time we were in utah. This has the same energy as that friend and its only because of the "costumes".
Loved the reference to The Doors' "The End" by Mira. I can't hear that song without thinking of the crazier parts of "Apocalypse Now" and given the discretion of "Deathworlder" this seems to be very much a parallel of that madness at points. Looking forward to reading this one.

The very few sparks of romance in 40k have always been super compelling to me, maybe because ive never actually read "real" romance in books, but it really ads a lot if drama to the universe and a lot of stakes.
I absolutely loved the last quarter of the book. I loved character interactions throughout, I am just not a fan of action in general and fighting specifically
this book was amazing to me, I was so happy by how brutal and well written it was. And this is from someone that really doesn't like Tyranid stories, I thin k this and Devastation of Baal are the ones I like.

I’m okay with letting the real shippers have it. Especially if it makes Celestines life worse, since it gives her more to lose! Gotta keep it grimdark if she’s going to be respawning all over the galaxy. Celestine partially forgetting her mortal girlfriend and getting killed every time they find each other could be a whole extra level of torment, or maybe I’m just evil? 🤔

I remember saying Cata-CHAN when I got into 40k during the end of 4th / start of 5th ed. Maybe Ian is just doing that thing old people do where they say '5 years ago' but what they actually mean is '15 years ago'. ..fuck knows I do that alot.

"ka-TA-chan" is fairly typical of how British English handles three syllable words; "KAT-a-chan" is fairly typical of how American and Canadian English handles three syllable words. So presumably the change in official pronunciation has to do with the Americans.
"Rainer Stuhl" might very well be a word play; "Reiner Alkohol" is a sound-alike to German for "pure alcohol". And Stuhl means both chair as well as stool. So him ranking high on the bastard scale as a character named "pure stool or sh!t" is no surprise to me, tbh. XD
You should read Day of ascension by Adrian Tchaikovski. The Protagonist is working for a Genestealer cult and I I really liked it. Adrian Tchaikovski is a really good writer, and while this book is hardly his best, I think its quality as a tie-in novel stands out. His space opera series beginning with Shards of earth has definite inspiration from the Warhammer universe, and has it's own Grimdark elements. Though I dare say they are probably a lot better than any Warhammer tie-in. His novel Children of time won the Arthur C Clarke award.
Definitely would not have picked this one up if it hadn’t been for your interview, but I am definitely glad that I did. I described this book as feeling like if they took Arnold Schwarzenegger and crew from Predator, dropped them into Apocalypse Now, and released the xenomorphs. Also, I am actually writing a wh40k romance novel that I hope to be able to pitch to Black Library.

The nightlord trilogy has a full on romance plot in it! its a great book and WAY too much for Mira but its awesome to have a romance in the story of the chaos corrupted torturers.

Khan in the Audiobook is a totally jaded and dis-interested South-Londoner who speaks slowly and wearily.
