Starting to Look Like a Real Locomotive! Backdating an FEF-3 Part 3

- A few things not mentioned in the video:
-The loco will not stay glossy. That is mostly for the eventual decals.
-Besides the bell and whistle, the decoder has not been configured so the chuff is out of sync and it's not the chuff I'd be using anyhow.
-The marker lamps need to be painted and the sides where the wires come through need to be filled. The throttle linkage going onto the smokebox also needs to be touched up.
-Handrails, bell, and some other boiler pieces will be installed next.
-It still needs traction tires. It noses to the right without them due to the grooves in the drivers.
-I'll likely go back in and remove the 2-pin connector between the tender and locomotive and instead make it a permanent connection.
So far though, it looks steam engine shaped!
Hi.Just of these older modelswhat you did to the motor to make it run well.I have the same model, with the same motor problem, & I had to remotor it. I used a Kato motor/flywheel, & a short driveshaft, & that was tight going. I put a decent non sound decoder in it & holee, does it run sooo sweet. Not a great puller, but beautifull runner, now.I might have to look at those wow sounds, coz your one is damn nice. Rivarossi/Hornby, upgraded these models, with a complete new drivetrain & DCC ready, but about twice the price of these older models AND had tender pickups. I had to modify my tender to give it tender pickups & was a huge help. Dosnt like code 83 track, though. Nice job, thanks for the vid. Cheers Michael NZ
Thanks Michael! I used a can motor off of eBay, these are used for electric rear view mirrors in cars but they have the right voltage and RPM for HO trains and are usually $3-5 USD. I used a driveshaft kit from a small shop called 'hobbytown of Boston', they have a lot of driveshaft and motor parts for remotoring locomotives. This one I also do not believe will be a good puller(it does need replacement traction tires) but I'm not planning on pulling super long trains personally, I'd rather fill out a loco maintenance facility and roundhouse!
The wowsound does sound great. I don't care for how they set up a separate light and sound mode, but it's just a different way of programming. I should add more pickups to this one but the extra capacitors help out with the lack of pickup. Thanks for watching!
Nice job on redoing the FEF Northern! I'm on the lookout for a 4-8-4 myself!
There's definitely plenty of options! Athearn and BLI, I think Marklin/Trix have one too, and used Riva or any used brass offering. Thank you and thanks for watching!
fantastic work!
Thank you very much!
Looks good ! Nice video
THE PAINT SO SMOOTH AAAA I LOVE IT
Good job
Also what is that dent in the smokebox
Cant wait to see the next part!
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Thanks for watching Phil!
Probably should point out that your thumbnail says “part 2” lol
Also, I was literally just watching Part 2 and wondering when the next part would be out
Yes I just noticed and changed it lol. I've definitely been slower when it comes to this particular project, I don't think I care for the format of breaking up projects into parts like this.
But thank you for watching regardless!
@@yardsounds90of course I’ve watched this far, I love your videos! I actually have my own Rivarossi FEF now and that needs upgrading, so this video series will be very helpful!
@@SuperRobotStudios if you have any specific questions, do let me know!
@@yardsounds90 I do have a couple, now that I've managed to pop off one of the tender ends! Did yours bend out of shape as you tried to get it off? If it did, how did you straighten it? And were there any instances of having to fill/smooth out the plastic that had gotten a bit "roughed up" in the process?
