Welcome! Here I hope to show some different model trains I've collected over the years, adding sound to locomotives, detailing, and one day beginning to build a layout as well as some casual railfanning. Thank you for watching.
Dressed to the Nines: Brass SUNSET Models Union Pacific 4-12-2
It's been a while since I've last had a steam locomotive to show! Today we have a brass model of the Union Pacific 4-12-2, three-cylinder steam locomotive made by Samhongsa for Sunset Models. Is it any good? I sure do hope so!

Detailing & Repowering an Athearn AC4400 - Union Pacific 6867

Another detailing project on the books, this time Union Pacific's AC4400 6867. I'm not sure the prototype has ever seen a repaint but it sure is do for one. But that old faded look makes for an interesting model in HO scale. This is how I repowered and detailed an old Athearn blue box AC44. 00:00 - Intro 00:55 - Parts List 02:00 - Power Truck Modifications 03:45 - Handrails 04:19 - Under the ho...

Some New Additions to the Roster - Athearn SD40N!

A train show usually means an update to the collection, and the Austin Train Show (2024 Edition) was no different! Also, the workbench has gained a new addition that will help with painting. I actually did not spend that much at the show for reasons that will be apparent in a few weeks. I also did not film any running at the show as my phone is also the throttle for the trains.
A (Mostly) Finished Early FEF-3! - Backdating a Rivarossi FEF-3
มุมมอง 286หลายเดือนก่อน
With decals applied and coal in the tender, I'm at a point to call this FEF-3 finished. It does still need some details added, a coupler mounted, and the wheels painted, but I'm happy with how it turned out and the 'big picture' is there. Hopefully there will be a video of it stretching its legs on the club layout in the near future.
WWI Narrow Gauge Shelf Layout - Part 1: Taking Stock

At long last, I have started work on my first layout! We're going with a WWI-themed layout, with trains in OO9 and vehicles and equipment in a mix of 1:72 and 1:76. Progress may be a little slow, but I plan on documenting the build as it happens.

EDIT: NMRA standards for HO car weight is one ounce, plus a HALF ounce per inch of car, not a full ounce like I state in the video - apologies for that! One of my newer acquisitions, an Aurora Miniatures Greenbrier boxcar, is a little too light for the NMRA standard. I like my cars to weigh a little more than the standard of one ounce plus one ounce per inch, so I needed to open it to add weigh...
Unpacking Model Trains in the New Place!

I thought it would be fun to go through the boxes of trains that have been packed up for the last several weeks. We are now somewhat settled, and I have a work desk once again! Acela at the Club Layout
มุมมอง 2944 หลายเดือนก่อน
Had a bit of fun running the Acela from Bachmann at the club! This is the only train that I have that isn't packed away for moving. #train You might ask "why isn't the Acela doing 150 around the layout?", and my answer would be the lack of protected edges and club trackwork. I'd rather not launch 7ft of high speed passenger train off the edge of a corner module 💀

I don't think I've ever caught an SD40N passing through Austin before although I imagine it's not super uncommon and I just don't get out enough to see them. Another dive into some of the locomotives from the big lot! This time, we're looking at that pair of AHM Alcos and like the AHM switcher, these are also only 4-wheel drive with 3-pole motors. Can we get any semblance of decent performance out of them after a little TLC?

Great pick up on the Nine! The cab forward I have is also a Sunset Model made by Ajin. I hope to get started on installing DCC/sound on my SP 4294 sometime early next year!
@@ApproachDiverging013 that'll be swell, hopefully it goes smoothly with the cab forward!
I like brass trains. Got my T38 Camelback from them.
They certainly have a good selection and prices were decent overall IMO. I'll definitely buy from them again if I'm in the market!
those cross bars are very loose the slide is just bouncing
@@Cloud_Shire_82 indeed, that became more apparent when I was editing
How much in Australian dollars, please? I'm amazed how far and how detailed model locos have got over the years. Thanks for sharing this with us.
About $520 in Australian dollars I think, although I'm not sure how that compares to native Australian model trains...
@@yardsounds90 thank you for replying.
Just a quick warning. When you you go to paint be aware of parts falling off. Even though they are more detailed than some of the westside models it is not as well built as the westside models. Having painted many sunset and earlier key models have soldering issues. It happens when you strip the clear coat. Some of the joints are cold and the clear coat is the only thing holding some of the parts together.
@@barkonious thank you for the heads up! I have a WMC 2-10-2 that I may try my hand at painting but this sunset model will go to a professional, I think. It seems much more daunting than I'm willing to do myself and I'll make sure to ask whoever paints it to mind the solder joints (I'd hope they would know!)
Looks like you have a good bargain with this engine.Did you find any flenged dring wheels in box to relace any of the flangeless ones? The right hand side return crank needs readjusting. With the connecting rod on that side bottom centre the crank should lean forwards, not backwards. That is why the small rod attached to the top of it is slightly bent. You have cleaned out solidified grease out of the gearbox, yet you have put more in, why? You will only have the same thing happen again. Use spearingly light oil in the gearbox. That is all that is needed. The locomotive will run very well doing this. Recently I have done the same with fourteen Ho diesel models. Now they run better than first made.
@@tulyar1043 It did indeed come with extra flanged wheels. It looks like the model was purchased and, if ran at all, was run very little. Considering the grease put into the gearbox in 1978 isn't the same as the light grease I'm using, and I'll actually be running this model, a little grease on meshing gears is needed. Bearings get oil, gears, worm or otherwise get a light application of grease.
For a brass loco of that size and got it with that price, I’d say that a decent deal, way better than what my Santa Fe 2-10-10-2 costs, conveniently, a little under a month ago, I also got my hands on a 4-12-2 from BLI for 160 bucks, tho for some reason the smoke unit is not working, eh, oh well, hope to see this 9000 with a sweet paint job
@@admiralfeistier I think those 2-10-10-2s are a little more hard to find, but they are really impressive.160 is quite a steal for a BLI nine! My BLI models with smoke don't keep it for long, I usually put a speaker in its place. Hopefully it runs well at the very least.
@@yardsounds90 yeah if I remember correctly only 1000 where imported, Westside models is one of 2 company’s that had 2-10-10-2s for sale (until Broadway limited releases there’s hopefully….) thing was unplanted so yeah, and I had to EXTENSIVELY modify it to work on my 26 radius curves but all in all, worth it, also the BLI nine, works flawlessly, possibly one of my best purchases
At ~ 12:26 you can see the left side crosshead jumping off the guide rails. These might need some re-alignment. Good luck she’s a beaut!
@@gregoirewolff ha I did not even notice! Thank you for pointing that out. Those guide rails are indeed very loose in the cylinder. Hopefully it doesn't take much to tighten those up
I have a sunset brass in my collection
Lots of work to take apart and paint and add a DCC decoder
I’m amazed how much better the cab looks with the new windows and also how did you create the braces for the brass wire underneath?
@@oakvillerailfan553 the laser cut windows are a bit fiddly but I agree, it definitely a major improvement. I don't quite understand the question about the brass wire, where specifically?
@@yardsounds90 the under frame piping, maybe traction motor cables? I see the DW? Parts on one side but wasn’t sure how you did the other
@@oakvillerailfan553 ah yes! The traction motor cable set from DW comes with a few short lengths, cast with their brackets already in place and mounting pins. Sorry, I totally failed to show that in the video, but their installation was pretty straightforward. Details West has a site with some photos showing how those are installed on an AC44, I mainly followed those photos. The other side with the brass wire is also a DW kit that comes with cast metal brackets that the brass wire slides into and has to be cut at certain sections if you want to be able to take the shell off. Kind of fiddly, but I was mostly following the photos from DW and the instructions, with some modifications (mainly the extra shelf I needed to put under the converter box behind the cab for the brackets and filter to sit on)
@@yardsounds90 ah didn’t know the kit came with the wires, just assumed it was cables on both sides
@@oakvillerailfan553 yeah the fireman's side has the traction motor cable bundles, the part number from DW is TC-239. The driver side has the air piping and brackets, DW part PB-259 and it comes with a few lengths of brass.
Fantastic job! I Recently purchased a speaker from Scale Sound Systems for a project that I was building and super happy the sound is awesome.

What size boiler barker did you use? I'm currently upgrading my 4-12-2 and this something I would love to do!
That was a 21mm diameter by 20mm length Boiler Barker. The Force-Full speaker in the tender was 15mm x 25mm x25mm. They make a nice pair, but even by itself the Boiler Barker is worth it IMO

How much did the build cost? I have a couple of those guys I’ve thought about detailing but not sure if it’s worth it for me when those genesis models are coming out and I’ve never detailed before
It really depends on how 'all-out' you want to go. After adding everything up, all the detail parts, the locomotive itself, decoder/speaker, new motor and trucks, it was just over $400 but this was spread over 10 months. If I was able to use the original blue box trucks, that would have saved me $50, and if you don't care about sound or DCC you can take another $135 out for the ESU decoder and speaker and Decoder buddy if you are just wiring for DC. Unless you like the detailing and repowering aspect, which I really do (it's my favorite part of the hobby), it's probably better to buy the newer Genesis and ScaleTrains offerings. That being said, it might be worth trying your hand at detailing at least once. There's a lot of good blue box models out there that don't need half the amount of details I put into them to look and run great.
@@yardsounds90Appreciate the reply, your build looks fantastic! Definitely inspired me. Maybe I will take a crack at mine, would be nice to gain some modeling experience.

i 100 % agree with the previous comments. You did a wonderful job on this model.
nice job!
So much time, care, and craftsmanship went into this! I would have never guessed it started life as a Blue Box
Thank you very much! I love my blue box models as much as the latest Genesis and ScaleTrains offerings.
They were the best....this RTR junk is harder to deal with....
Or should I say paint stripping and redetailing is harder to deal with
@@ShawnCalay Certainly true, at this point I'd rather just paint over factory paint than try to strip it down if I had to.
@@yardsounds90 sadly I don't have that privilege unless it's a room grande SD40T-2 or Sp, maybe a cp SD40-2 being parted out as I'm a Brasilian modeler....detail specific RTR stuff is so much harder
That is absolutely awesome, great work man
Thank you, I'm glad people appreciate it!
A nice little update, my grandson has an update coming up soon on his. He's been building a short tunnel but trying to keep the track accessible. He's also planning to put a terminal block inside it, so he needs access to that as well as the track. So you'll see his solution to that on his next video. He says he might try the wire in the tube method for changing the points...cheers James 🙂👍
That is a job well done on that ac4400. It looks like you have modified the cab window area, as the BB models were really off around the front windscreen.Did you repower it? They do run a bit quieter with a can motor & I always replace the wheels on the BB models, with ns wheelsets, as they stay cleaner, longer. I have, I think 5 of those P2K GP 38s, & I have not come across the zinc rot at all. Mind you, I havnt checked either, so will do a check at some point. I know Scott Rails had a BIG problem in that area. Well done, sir.
Thank you! I plan on doing a full video on the ac4400 very soon, but it is essentially fully repowered and detailed with a Genesis motor, A-Line/PPW drive shafts, nickel silver wheels. Very sweet runner, if not just a little light. I saw Scott Rails and his poor zinc rot loco, thankfully it doesn't appear that mine is crumbling but I am keeping tabs on it!
Great train show finds! I really like how the UP 6867 turned out with the fade and details! Also I too have an ex-GWS gondola patched for Rio Grande!
@@ApproachDiverging013 I definitely need to do a video on 6867, that might be after the shelf layout update I think!

Yesssss! I’ve been waiting to see this completed! I really want to upgrade my own FEF in a similar way to yours, and your videos are really helpful!
Nice job on the FEF Northern! Hope you get some good running time out at the Austin club!
Would it be possible to put rapido couplers on there?

Outstanding Results there. By any chance did you document the wiring sequence for the harness? I just acquired one of these beasties off of eBay and one of my first projects is to yank out the stock sound system and upgrade it with a Tsunami2 decoder. Many thanks again and keep posting your progress.
I did actually note down the sequence of the harness for this particular one! Looking at the locomotive connection from the back, left to right it should be: 8 Track R, 7 Motor Neg, 6 Positive, 5 Wheel Sensor, 4 Negative, 3 serial, 2 Motor Pos, 1 Track L I actually did a blog post back when I wrote a blog on my experience, hopefully it might help roundhouseworkshops.wordpress.com/2021/10/27/broadway-limited-union-pacific-4-8-2/
@@yardsounds90 Most excellent and thank you! Just did initial programing and brake-in on my layout. How do you remove the top of the tender oil tank to get inside without destroying the model?
Outstanding work. Very impressed with the firebox flicker and class light effects. Do you have the DCC plug wiring sequence lying around somewhere in your stuff? Thanks for the link, info and keep um coming!
Thank you! I believe I do somewhere but I've had some trouble finding that notebook. If I remember the 4-12-2 uses the 9-pin since it originally came with the smoke unit and chuff cam before I removed those. This thread might offer some help if I am unable to get back to you with those notes: forum.mrhmag.com/post/any-pointers-on-replacing-a-paragon-2-decoder-12203598
My grandson (12) has enjoyed watching this video and is looking forward to seeing your progress with this. @yardsounds90 we are looking forward to seeing your next update. My grandson will hopefully be having a new stop-motion animation video soon with a layout update, hopefully not too long after. Thank you for subscribing it really is appreciated... CheersJames 🙂👍
Excellent video! Was the weight inside the locomotive cut down or modified to fit the decoder buddy mini?
Thank you! I had to cut down the weight some to fit the decoder buddy on there, but I'm not concerned too much about lost pulling power with this one. Just a hack job with a hack saw and slowly cutting at the weight.
Nice video! Did you use the Rivarossi marker lights and drill them out to take the LED, or is it something else? Just a clarification on “firebox flicker”, it is only really applicable to oil-burning locomotives. A coal burner has an ash pan beneath the fire, which means the fire is not visible.
@@struck2soon I did not know that about the flicker, thank you for the heads up! Maybe I can modify it to be a firebox glow in the cab. For the marker lights, I (very carefully) drilled the plastic ones that come molded in the smoke box. It makes it easier not having to worry about brass castings shorting out the tiny surface mount LEDs when they get installed.
@@yardsounds90 Good point, I hadn’t thought about the short circuiting with brass. I admire your steady drilling hand! Here is a Rivarossi Big Boy I fitted an ESU sound decoder to and weathered: th-cam.com/video/yteZgcj3AX8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5OL7_v9_Lak8mTH2

I am also in the US creating a WW1 layout in 7mm. I have a ton of information if you need it as well as STL files.
Looking forward to seeing this develop so I have subbed. I did a 4x3ft WWI layout of a casualty clearing station. It was operated by the British but they trained American medics there and the local narrow gauge was operated by US engineers. I haven't finished it yet and have been doing other layouts since. I do know a lot about WWI though and have been to the battlefields about 50 times. My layout is set in a real French village and has the soil from the village on it.
There goes a train means that you saw a train go thunder by in order to notice the train go thunder by and get to watch the train go thunder by while the train was speeding down the railroad train tracks at gentle top speed out on the railroad night shift journeys and the railroad day shift journeys to deliver the human people passengers and their trunks and their baggages and their luggages and their suitcases and the North American United States mail and the garbage trash and the circus and the freight and the food and the clothes and the toys and the livestock animals and the raw-materials and the finished products and the manufactured goods and the freight goods and the supplies and the cargo to their correct destinations and it means that it was just an expression of adolescent admiration and that it was just basically like the child looking at a moving train and admiring the train running past, and exclaiming the “There goes a train,” word phrase to watch the moving train go thunder by and it means that someone was watching the trains go thunder by, which is called the railfanning and it even means that it was “All aboard,” for fun. The 1994 North American Real Wheels/Live Action Video For Kids episode, There Goes A Train with Dave Hood as Train Engineer Dave from Kid Vision turned out to be my top favorite main reason why I would like to watch the North American railroad trains go thunder by.
Hey very nice, congratulations to the great work! 👍 You have convinced me to buy an older Athearn P42 and convert it myself, similar like you've done it.
I'm glad to know I could inspire someone! Thank you very much for watching and good luck with your own conversion

Are you sure the little UK 'American' wartime dock shunter is 4mm scale (actually nominally 4mm on HO track)? Anyhow, been looking at the brass Overland 2-10-2?. Thoroughly enjoyed and had a lot of chatty suggestions. Do you have a gmail attached to your channel.
