As someone who owns one, I can safely say if you buy a GPD Win for Skyrim, you're an idiot. In fact that goes for all "mini-PCs". Windows on a portable gaming device is really, really impractical and will only appeal to intense tinkerers.

man I'm glad I chose the gpd win, it's alot of fun, sure it's no power pc but I love playing pc games on the go. I played fallout new Vegas on it! it has its faults, but it is a great little device. planning on installing a few more games.
Well twice the gpu on integrated graphics. Well there do exist shitty laptops they sell for much without good GPU. You probably gonna emulate stuff and play 2010 games or something

It's a pretty flawed device tbh, and I STILL love it. I said it on the review video that GPD has consistently gotten better with each device. the GPD XD was ok, the GPD Win was better. The GPD pocket is a super solid laptop(though I think it's a bad product) quality wise. I'm hoping the gpd win 2 will knock it out of the park.

I'd be very concerned if they copyright striked the video. Currently, the only claim the head of SmachZ has made is that the term 'scam' be removed as there is counter-evidence suggesting otherwise. I wont be the first to criticize the SmachZ project, they've not had the best PR track record, but I have been active in the private backer forums ever since they started, there has been a lot more info on their than there has been for any of the general public. Kickstarter is an investment fund, you pledge an amount as a risk venture into a startup to potentially get the project to fruition at the end of the time frame. Bumps ALWAYS come up along the way. GPD have made a great device, but the scope of their 'console' is very different to the concept of the SmachZ, they have standardised tablet parts using Atom processors which are very easy to come by which are coupled with a qwerty keyboard and xinput controls. Compare this to an x86 partially modular handheld PC which is using non standard amd SOC's and steam controller input methods, something relatively new in the hardware space. I'll be the first to step up and wave flags at SmachZ when they've done wrong. I want my damn console. But right now there is nothing fishy going on or any sort of scam. The development is still making it's way along, I have seen progress reports given to the community and Daniel (the head of SmachZ) has been very active answering all of our questions amongst the backers. This video serves nothing but to spread misinformation.

It's incredible how fast this market has grown. We've gone from placing our hopes on crowd-funded projects to actually owning high quality handheld PCs made by big brands like Valve, Asus, Lenovo, and MSI, as well as by Chinese companies, all in just a few years. That being said, the Smach Z might have found a place in this market if they had delivered on their product, similar to GPD, which was also making portable PCs back then and still has a dedicated fanbase today.
Some countries use . instead of , when separating thousands from hundreds. So instead of 2,000, like most English speaking countries are used to, it's 2.000. And if you think asinine, there are countries out there that have entirely different counting systems, which makes translation a pain in the ass.
It's funny that a lot of Smach Z backers talked down on the GPD Win, but if these gamescom attendees were impressed with what they were running at that show, then GPD Win will do them just fine.
Some good things have come out of Kickstarter though such as Shovel Knight, undertale, Pillars of Eternity, Shadowrun games, Hyper Light Drifter and more.
Well, to be fair, the point is to have it be handheld. You could carry it as easily as a phone. Still, the GPD WIN is basically that (and it exists) and this project is a blatant scam.
I'll say one thing about prototypes like that: they are useful for a few things like testing ergonomics, but to use it as a showcase of a product to investors is a clear violation of laws in many countries. If they were in Australia the ACCC would be going after them with the full weight of the law, it's just a pity that these kinds of scam artists can skirt the law in so many countries.
Some countries and jurisdictions have taken action against these campaigns, but they're only able to recover for backers that fall under their geographic control. Easier said then done though because if the campaign fails to deliver it's likely they have no money left and the judgment isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Given how it is all worded I would say more along the lines that LowSpecGamer is disappointed in the lack of effective management. Not the fact that its a 'scam' or a 'potential scam'. He even stated it very well when he noted this 'I currently personally believe the Smach Z not be a literal scam but rather an over ambitious project that run into major issues'. Which is of course not doubt of a genuine product, but rather disappointment in managing a large scale project. I find it annoying when people take what I have written out of context, and I am not alone there. You seem fairly intelligent so in a way when you play on words like this, you are essentially scamming your viewers/readers into something not honestly valid. That's what they said they were doing at gamescom, but I doubt they were doing that on the show floor. They claimed they were having issues so they could only play simple games like Castle Crashers. I've been to enough conventions to know that with the typical wifi situation they probably couldn't stream.

I noticed this scam for a long time now and when i would see a Smach Z "promo" video i would comment saying that it is fake and all and i would get so many people that would defend the system with their lives which does get to be a little sad and i wish they learn for their mistakes. Also i find the GPD Win to be considered better because it is an actual PC in the palm of your hand because you have the function for the mouse and you have a working keyboard as well and having 64gb of internal storage you can't go wrong with that.
StopDrop&Retro i tried telling people about the 800$ Dell gaming laptop that would preform 10 times better than the Smach Z which has a i5 7300HQ with a GTX 1050 which they could use any controller they would prefer to use as well.

Nope, no backing out and they already said in their update after Romb.io left that there is no chance of refunds. The Smach team seems to be indignant, check out their comments page. They cried wee wee all the way back to their own private forums where I'm absolutely sure they will be providing their backers with nothing but accurate information.

wow. that first prototype was shit. if i had made that first prototype by myself in my basement with spare parts, i'd be pretty fucking proud of it, but that's not what a "prototype" made by a team to show how great your product is going to be. thats what you call a very early test for a proof of concept, and even that is a stretch.

The Linx Vision is the same tablet that these scam kickstarters are using BUT has an extra USB connector in a proprietary form factor. The controller is just a normal xinput controller. So it's a win 10 tablet that's really slow with a nifty controller. It's not designed as a standalone device, it's meant to stream steam/xbox games and it works really well if you need that. We got one in as a freebie at the shop a while and.. I liked it but I don't need that kind of device. You might like it if you have an xbox one or want to stream steam games around your house. It's not sold as a standalone windows device like the gpd win or the scam kickstarters and isn't really the same type of device. Really it's just your run of the mill cheap tablet with a rather cool(imo) controller.

No, not an ARM processor, AMD x86 processor. The ClickARM architecture (now renamed rhomb io) is a base board family that can accept a variety of processor modules and a variety of peripheral modules. They can accomplish this by placing processor, RAM and a variety of components that the processor directly depends on onto the processor module. Most of the processor modules are ARM based, such as the i.MX by Freescale/NXP, and Exynos by Samsung. One of the module series are x86 processors, the AMD SoC Merlin Falcon. That's the module the Smach Z is supposed to ship with. The chosen Merlin Falcon SKU has a TDP of around 15W, 4 Excavator-derived x86 cores running at around 2 GHz, and a Radeon 7 with 512 shader units running at likely around 800 MHz, either with some balancing headroom. The problems arise more at the area of cooling and power not being engineered or likely engineerable within the design constraints - they claimed it to be fully passive, utilizing VersarienCu copper foam heatsink. Now the largest available of those is 40x40x5 and is rated up to 5W and 17.5°C/W thermal resistance at that wattage. The maximum of 5W is chosen for a good reason. I extrapolate from available data a 40x40x10 (double thickness, slightly better) to approach at best 15°C/W near or above 10W, which means at 15W, the temperature at the source will be 225°C above ambient, so over 250°C real - impossible! There's even a faux pas, the ClickARM creates a hot stale air pocket under the processor module, blocked to over 80% at all four sides by connectors, and the processor is necessarily partially heatsunk into this air pocket by soldering. Hopefully no LiPo battery near there! But if there's none in the enclosure middle, maybe there's 2 18650-equivalents in the handles, which will be good for up to 25Wh, for 1.5 hours of game time. Now maaaaaaaaaaaybe there's a way, if they were to heatpipe it off to a 40x120x10 heatsink, that's maybe 5°C/W, that could just about work, though i'm being a bit optimistic in extrapolation, if there really is natural airflow over that whole area. And the device will still heat up beyond pain threshold of 55°C on the outside. I say going without active cooling is a completely and utterly bone headed idea, and the whole thing has every right to be quite a bit more bulky to provide useful battery run time. Compare that to: Nintendo Switch: around 5W, maybe a bit less The tablet board they likely had in the expo mockup: 2.2W GPD Win: around 2W sustained passive, maybe double that with active cooling. Two of these devices use active cooling. For a good reason.
Some people don't seem to understand what Rainway is. It doesn't make Switch a PC, it doesn't make Switch powerful. It just streams games from the PC that you must already own, and it must be a pretty mighty PC, and if you leave your WiFi, you must also have a mighty upstream line to the Internet, which most of us can't have. And it won't be Switch exclusive, it'll be available on everything that has a screen, WiFi, and a H264 decoder, which is just about every phone or tablet.

Yeah, no. The device's performance isn't even on par with Switch, which by that time was already 2 years old, not to mention their asking price is nearly double the Switch price. By this point, this device is technological dinosaur, even if they release it that won't be worth it's price. Also, who the hell knows if by the time SmachZ releases, Nintendo won't pull some kind of Switch Pro model, which would probably still be cheaper than Smach which will struggle to perform on regular Switch's level. If you really need a pocket PC, just buy from competition which has the product already released in retail instead of waiting for those clowns to release this overpriced piece of shit.

I'd be very concerned if they copyright striked the video. Currently, the only claim the head of SmachZ has made is that the term 'scam' be removed as there is counter-evidence suggesting otherwise.
I wont be the first to criticize the SmachZ project, they've not had the best PR track record, but I have been active in the private backer forums ever since they started, there has been a lot more info on their than there has been for any of the general public.
Kickstarter is an investment fund, you pledge an amount as a risk venture into a startup to potentially get the project to fruition at the end of the time frame. Bumps ALWAYS come up along the way.
GPD have made a great device, but the scope of their 'console' is very different to the concept of the SmachZ, they have standardised tablet parts using Atom processors which are very easy to come by which are coupled with a qwerty keyboard and xinput controls. Compare this to an x86 partially modular handheld PC which is using non standard amd SOC's and steam controller input methods, something relatively new in the hardware space.
I'll be the first to step up and wave flags at SmachZ when they've done wrong. I want my damn console.
But right now there is nothing fishy going on or any sort of scam. The development is still making it's way along, I have seen progress reports given to the community and Daniel (the head of SmachZ) has been very active answering all of our questions amongst the backers.

It's incredible how fast this market has grown. We've gone from placing our hopes on crowd-funded projects to actually owning high quality handheld PCs made by big brands like Valve, Asus, Lenovo, and MSI, as well as by Chinese companies, all in just a few years. That being said, the Smach Z might have found a place in this market if they had delivered on their product, similar to GPD, which was also making portable PCs back then and still has a dedicated fanbase today.

I'll say one thing about prototypes like that: they are useful for a few things like testing ergonomics, but to use it as a showcase of a product to investors is a clear violation of laws in many countries. If they were in Australia the ACCC would be going after them with the full weight of the law, it's just a pity that these kinds of scam artists can skirt the law in so many countries.
Some countries and jurisdictions have taken action against these campaigns, but they're only able to recover for backers that fall under their geographic control. Easier said then done though because if the campaign fails to deliver it's likely they have no money left and the judgment isn't worth the paper it's written on.
Time only proved this guy right.

Which is of course not doubt of a genuine product, but rather disappointment in managing a large scale project. That's what they said they were doing at gamescom, but I doubt they were doing that on the show floor. They claimed they were having issues so they could only play simple games like Castle Crashers. I've been to enough conventions to know that with the typical wifi situation they probably couldn't stream.

I noticed this scam for a long time now and when i would see a Smach Z "promo" video i would comment saying that it is fake and all and i would get so many people that would defend the system with their lives which does get to be a little sad and i wish they learn for their mistakes.
Also i find the GPD Win to be considered better because it is an actual PC in the palm of your hand because you have the function for the mouse and you have a working keyboard as well and having 64gb of internal storage you can't go wrong with that.
plus, it's real. And yeah, people who know about PCs were trying to tell everyone else that what they were trying to do is near impossible.

Keep up the good content, and maybe consider picking up a Linx Vision 8 or 10 inch gaming tablet for a distant review, it's an interesting UK-only device that you may want to consider reviewing, has unique gaming controls on the side of the device and runs windows 10.

The Linx Vision is the same tablet that these scam kickstarters are using BUT has an extra USB connector in a proprietary form factor. The controller is just a normal xinput controller. So it's a win 10 tablet that's really slow with a nifty controller. It's not designed as a standalone device, it's meant to stream steam/xbox games and it works really well if you need that. We got one in as a freebie at the shop a while and.. I liked it but I don't need that kind of device. You might like it if you have an xbox one or want to stream steam games around your house.
It's not sold as a standalone windows device like the gpd win or the scam kickstarters and isn't really the same type of device. Really it's just your run of the mill cheap tablet with a rather cool(imo) controller.

No, not an ARM processor, AMD x86 processor. The ClickARM architecture (now renamed rhomb io) is a base board family that can accept a variety of processor modules and a variety of peripheral modules. They can accomplish this by placing processor, RAM and a variety of components that the processor directly depends on onto the processor module. Most of the processor modules are ARM based, such as the i.MX by Freescale/NXP, and Exynos by Samsung. One of the module series are x86 processors, the AMD SoC Merlin Falcon. That's the module the Smach Z is supposed to ship with. The chosen Merlin Falcon SKU has a TDP of around 15W, 4 Excavator-derived x86 cores running at around 2 GHz, and a Radeon 7 with 512 shader units running at likely around 800 MHz, either with some balancing headroom.
The problems arise more at the area of cooling and power not being engineered or likely engineerable within the design constraints - they claimed it to be fully passive, utilizing VersarienCu copper foam heatsink. Now the largest available of those is 40x40x5 and is rated up to 5W and 17.5°C/W thermal resistance at that wattage. The maximum of 5W is chosen for a good reason. I extrapolate from available data a 40x40x10 (double thickness, slightly better) to approach at best 15°C/W near or above 10W, which means at 15W, the temperature at the source will be 225°C above ambient, so over 250°C real - impossible! There's even a faux pas, the ClickARM creates a hot stale air pocket under the processor module, blocked to over 80% at all four sides by connectors, and the processor is necessarily partially heatsunk into this air pocket by soldering. Hopefully no LiPo battery near there! But if there's none in the enclosure middle, maybe there's 2 18650-equivalents in the handles, which will be good for up to 25Wh, for 1.5 hours of game time. Now maaaaaaaaaaaybe there's a way, if they were to heatpipe it off to a 40x120x10 heatsink, that's maybe 5°C/W, that could just about work, though i'm being a bit optimistic in extrapolation, if there really is natural airflow over that whole area. And the device will still heat up beyond pain threshold of 55°C on the outside. I say going without active cooling is a completely and utterly bone headed idea, and the whole thing has every right to be quite a bit more bulky to provide useful battery run time.
Compare that to:
Nintendo Switch: around 5W, maybe a bit less
The tablet board they likely had in the expo mockup: 2.2W
GPD Win: around 2W sustained passive, maybe double that with active cooling.
Two of these devices use active cooling. For a good reason.

Some people don't seem to understand what Rainway is. It doesn't make Switch a PC, it doesn't make Switch powerful. It just streams games from the PC that you must already own, and it must be a pretty mighty PC, and if you leave your WiFi, you must also have a mighty upstream line to the Internet, which most of us can't have. And it won't be Switch exclusive, it'll be available on everything that has a screen, WiFi, and a H264 decoder, which is just about every phone or tablet.

I came back here after seeing the E3 2019 Showcase... Things seem a lot more promising than they did two years ago.
Yeah, no. The device's performance isn't even on par with Switch, which by that time was already 2 years old, not to mention their asking price is nearly double the Switch price. By this point, this device is technological dinosaur, even if they release it that won't be worth it's price. Also, who the hell knows if by the time SmachZ releases, Nintendo won't pull some kind of Switch Pro model, which would probably still be cheaper than Smach which will struggle to perform on regular Switch's level. If you really need a pocket PC, just buy from competition which has the product already released in retail instead of waiting for those clowns to release this overpriced piece of shit.
