I led over 600 tours to Salzburg in the early 1980s when I worked for the U.S. Armed Forces Recreation Center in Berchtesgaden, Germany (also another great day trip from Salzburg). A few things I would add. Even if you don’t think you’d like to see a chamber music concert, absolutely take advantage of seeing one. My favorite location was at the castle. Be very Austrian and have a coffee and pastry at Café Tomaselli in the old city. Even better than a Nackerl, in my opinion, is a Germknödel. It’s a yeast dough dumpling filled with plum jam. And in response to someone who posted there’s not much to see in Salzburg. Respectfully, I think he misses the point. Salzburg is a city to be enjoyed.
2:15 or, even better: just buy it at a normal (not touristy) supermarket. It's chocolate, you can find it at most of the supermarkets and thats the cheapest price you can get. This by the way applies for many food souvenirs around the world, sometimes you can find the exact same package in a souvenir shop 3 times the price of a normal supermarket
I second the Salzburg Card! We purchased the Salzburg Card when we went in September, 2024. It was around 39 Euro but included in the price was either free or discounted admissions to the sites. Transportation was also included on the card. We could move to Salzburg in a heartbeat!
There is no such thing for me as too much Mozart. ❤😃 I will be there next May and I am ready! Thanks for a lovely video Wolter (loved the cameo from your beautiful Mom!) and cheers from Seattle! 👋
Anyone planning a trip… treat yourself to Hotel Schloss Monchstein. Absolutely stunning and special experience. No other hotel in town compares. A true 5 star experience.
One of the great cities in Europe and a must visit if you are a classical music fan. I attended the music festival last summer and spent a week of fantastic performances. Don’t miss the Stiftung Mozarteum, near the Mirabell Palace, if you have a chance to attend a concert there it is an awesome venue. Keep in mind Austrians dress formally for concerts so DO bring a dark suit, although ties are optional. Also, the bus service is excellent and will get you to the Hellbrun Palace, and even all the way to Untersberg which is highly recommended. The surrounding countryside is unbelievably gorgeous so don’t miss an opportunity to visit Hallstatt or one the towns in the Salzkammergut Lake District. The organ concerts at noon are a great way to experience the Salzburg Cathedral, and by all means go to a performance at the Marionettentheater, it’s not just for children and the experience is unforgettable. Generally it’s wise to buy concert and show tickets well in advance, I’ve got mine already for my return visit in January for Mozart Week!
Salzburg, I love it. I live just over an hour away by train or car. There's a special word for the rain in Salzburg: Schnürlregen, or string-rain. One continuous string of rain!
The cathedral is stunning. We were thee on a Sunday afternoon and there was a beautiful choir. The only issue we had was finding public bathrooms. Starbucks has one!
Hello and greetings from a Salzburg local! You've done a good job covering the usual basics. What I missed as soon as I heard you say Steingasse: visit Antique shop Gallery Weinek! The owners Andrew and Viola are amazing people and there are not just antique books (and postcards) there waiting to be explored. They have a selection of natural wines and specialty coffee as well as usually two homemade cakes. And: because it's a gallery there are local artists who display their work there.
Thank you for the tip! My husband and I will be there for 2 days in early May 2025 and we are very excited. (We are Mozart fans and have been learning German for 2 years.) Your city looks absolutely beautiful! I hope the waiters and salespeople won’t be sick of tourists yet in early May and might still be a little friendly? 🥹 Cheers from Seattle 🇺🇸!
Don't forget about the Krampus runs. They usually happen the first week of December, in various locations throughout the old town, but also right across the river in the beautiful Linzer gasse. It's a lot of fun and excitement.
Lived there for 5 months and loved every minute of it. Totally safe and walkable, the bosnas are great, but you left out käsekrainer! They’re excellent cheese weenies that I wouldn’t pass up from any sausage stand. Also, don’t miss a chance for Döner or dürüm Kebab, they make them spicy in Salzburg, it’s amazing.
I loved Salzburg. I know how your mom feels. I was walking around one evening after dinner and saw a sweater that I loved. Then I saw the price, around €600
I studied there 1995-96 as an AYA graduate student. It was an amazing place to spend nine months of my academic career. I would like to make a return visit, if only to see how much has remained the same since then.
I just spent three nights in Salzburg (last week of November). This is one of the best walking cities I have ever seen. The cyclists here are very good but they mean business and it is essential t to look both ways before crossing the clearly-marked bicycle path. The Hotel Sacher is superb.
Hi Mark, One thing about the Augustine Brewery is their Christmas or Bock beer. It is 6.1% but sliky smooth! One hotell I'd highly recommend is Hotel Hohenstauffen, it's about a 4 minmute walk from the Hauptbanhof & Busbahnhof. The fountens at Schloss Heilbrunn are "Trick" fountains, the Prince Archbishop had them installed to prank his guests. Sadly they usually close around mid September.
I do Love Austria , beautiful country with a great class ! I lived there for a year ( 40 years ago 🤭) I will never forget the trips to the countryside , staying in "Bed and Breakfast" on the farm .We were served every morning : country butter , homemade cheese and jam , fresh eggs and a jug of milk 👌😋. For us Americans it was very special European experience❤ 👍
Don't forget that the gates to the Mirabel Gardens can be closed at the weekend as the main building is a Government building which won't be open at weekends. Saying that it's a great place to visit.
Take the bus to Unterberg and take the gondola up there. It is easy to hike if you wera good shoes. Also in the warmer season go to Hellbrunn Trickfountains.
no one in Austria knows the Sound of Music....similarly to no one knowing "Winnetou and Old Shatterhand" by Karl May in the U.S., although it "plays" in the Wild West of the U.S.
I studied in Salzburg, but never once visited Mozart's Geburtshaus. But I did eat a lot of Mozartkugeln 😂 Back then, admission to the castle (i.e. the castle courtyard with its fantastic view) was still free; only the museums there costed admission. Salzburg is completely over-touristed now.
Get the Salzburg Card! It's about 28 Euro to 39 Euro depending on when you go, but you get free admission or reduced admission to many of the tourist attractions. Public transportation is also included with the card.
About the price. Salzburg is the most expensive city in Austria. But Innsbruck is not much cheaper. Munich is not cheaper either. I recommend staying in Linz on the Danube. It is not a distinct tourist city, but it takes only 1 hour and 15 minutes by train to Salzburg and the same time to Vienna. Thanks for the video, as an Austrian it is always nice to get feedback from visitors. Good luck with your channel
Reber is from Germany, it's not even Austrian.... The name Mozartkugel is not copyrighted, so there are very many producers, from small confectioneries like Fürst (the silver-blue ones) to major food producers like Mondelez (which produces the Mirabell ones, the ones which you can find in every supermarket in Austria and beyond).
@@fruzsimih7214 yes, but (to me) they still taste better than the Mirabell lol! Unfortunately, obtaining the Fűrst ones in Massachusetts are challenging...
Don't trounce around wearing drapes. Captain Von Trapp will not be happy. There in 1988 on a college trip where we crammed too much in one trip. I don't remember much about our day there now but mow that you mention it i remember Austria being expensive. Thanks for the video!
We’ll be there for Krampusnacht! We were just reviewing your videos on the city yesterday. Any advice for someone hoping to make the most of it on the 4th/5th? I looked up the events on Salzburg’s tourist website for Krampusnacht, hoping the things they listed don’t leave out any Krampus-musts.
Dang it! Plans ruined. I was going to take your mom with me next year to Salzburg for the Christmas markets. I guess I'll have to find another travel companion. Thanks for the warning! :-)
I visited Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Uppsala in 2017. I'm from the US, and it was a culture shock for sure. Most everyone is very reserved. Which I liked for the most part. I did see a woman with a stroller struggling to get on the tram. Nobody was helping her, so we stepped in to lift it. Small things like that were kinda shocking. So there's good and bad about the culture of staying in your own bubble. Mind you, not everyone is like that. Overall, it's a fantastic and beautiful country to visit with nice people. I think a mistake people make visiting they tend to think it's a utopia. Well, there are still homeless, some trash, and smelly areas. But it's typically much cleaner and well organized.
My wife and I are leaving Vienna on Sunday and stopping in Salzburg for 1 night on our way to Munich. What restaurant would you recommend so I can try to make reservations.
And I talked to a lot of people that also travel a lot and have come across your videos and your rapid speech has people worried but I hope you’re doing great and I hope you’re very healthy and safe
It can be really hot in summer with little to no AC around, and pretty cold in winter, but it rains A LOT otherwise. The clouds have to dump their moisture to get over the mountains so there’s always a fair chance of intermittent rain. I always carried a small umbrella when I lived there.
@rosalilly8431 The Austrians, together and in concert with the Prussians & Catherine (German Tsarina of Russia), took care of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for 123 years (1795 - 1918). And in 1939, the most famous Austrian painter visited us. We would show a lack of culture if we did not visit our western neighbors and thank them for everything.
