  • An updated version of my top fifteen female ballet variations! As always here we are ranking the choreography, not the dancer. And also we will never all agree! Let me know what you think in the comments, or if you have recommendations for other videos!

    The magic thing about Osipova is that she so completely manages to be a miracle of dance on the bottom and totally, utterly human on the top. It makes her so appealing and real at the same time as being utterly superb.

    In matter of choice of No 1 ... I agree - it's from La Bayadere (the most beautiful ballet I ever have seen). I agree - it's Gamzatti 's one (my favourite character - no way a villain)... but definitely different variation. I prefer so called "temple variation" from the last act. Maybe less choreographically complex, but with what an incredible emotional load. It is not enough to dance it technically well ... here you have to convey the drama of the situation. Here is link to this variation, performed by same ballerina (Nunez) :

      Nunez was one of the best in this, but I also really love her Nikiya. Dating myself here, but I was in NYC when this premiered and Cynthia Gregory danced Gamzatti. I think the music here is John Lanchberry {best dance conductor ever} and it's Makarova's choreography. Still my favorite production ever!

      And the always great Sofiane Sylve; I just wouldn’t have chosen this variation/choreography as the best example of her (frankly astonishing) talents. Also Tiler Peck is among those conspicuously missing from this collection (as much as I love Bouder, no one compares to Peck in the Tchai Pas variation).

    Very nice, although my preferred Sylvia is still Balanchine's. Interesting to see bits of two Ashton ballets choreographed for Fonteyn---the sheer speed of some of the footwork always amazes. And I only know this because I just watched it in the last half hour, but "Gamzatti's" variation is actually from a film of the Corsaire pdd (look at the costume) . I don't know why RB sometimes uses the Gamzatti music rather than the other two (one from the Don Q vision scene) more commonly used. Thank you for introducing me to Sofiane Sylve, she's extraordinary. And for including so many of my favorite ballerinas who are currently dancing, from Bouder to Obravtsova and yes, the hugely underrated Novikova.

    That Aurora Dream Variation choreography is so lame compared to the versions usually performed by the French and Russians :-) It's always a bummer for me when I hear the start of that beautiful piece, to then have it lead into that dull choreography.

    • @minissa2009
      @minissa2009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IKR? I've had other balletomaniacs argue with me that it was written as a pas d'action so it's more important that it advance the plot, but as someone who's both danced and choreographed, that music *begs* for sumptuous choreography rather than the little game of hide and seek with Lilac and the nymphs.

    • @dominusmaximus7665
      @dominusmaximus7665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@minissa2009 The music is incredible for Aurora to flow through and interact with, as if in a dream or vision of deeper meaning. The overly repetitious choreography wastes that. Would love to see many RoH dancers perform the other version.

    • @minissa2009
      @minissa2009 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@dominusmaximus7665 Have you seen one specific version of the choreo that is standard from company to company? I remember an old Kirov production with Kolpakova that used this very dance-able music for dancing, but I wasn't sure it was standardized in any way, and I think current Mariinsky uses something similar but not the same. I think most Western productions are based on what Nicholas Sergeyev brought over from Russia. I wonder if, like the White acts in Swan Lake, it would have looked different if Ivanov had choreographed. Most of SB's music was so scripted it seems odd that Tchaikovsky produced this music if what Petipa told him was "Music for the Lilac Fairy to introduce Desire to Aurora and see if he really loves her plus they play hide and seek with some dryads." lols!

    • @dominusmaximus7665
      @dominusmaximus7665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@minissa2009 The closest I've seen to a standard is what's usually performed by Bolshoi and Mariinsky, and the similar Paris Opera Nureyev style. Whatever parent choreography these two similar versions stem from seems to be a standard. Do you know that history?
