I remember being startstruck and in absolute awe of the Witch-King during his first appearance in the movies back when I was a kid.
I hadn't read the books before watching the movies, this moment will forever be graved in my mind.
By far one of my favourite characters in all of Tolkien's universe, only Feanor and Melkor being above him in my list.

Sure is ! They were my favorite evils back when I read the books way before the films but the films really did an amazing job. I see them as in the films now not as originally imagined so i don't know what that says about my imagination or maybe they were just damn well crafted !

I actually like that we never get an answer as to who the Witch King once was. It adds such mystery and threat to him, especially in a series with such a detailed history. This gap in our knowledge and who we imagine he might have been, especially considering he was likely the most ambitious and cruel of the great men given a Ring of Power.

The Witch King is my favorite character of all Tolkien's. There's so much depth to him but also so much mystery. Who was he really? Why did he get so powerful? Such a great character. My entire left arm is dedicated to his badassness in tattoo form. 👑

At least as far as i can tell your not incorrect, it could come out in a future book about his backstory however its hard to imagine just who the original witch king was in tolkiens mind, im sure had he had the time before his passing we would have a more complete story.

Even if a duel took place between the Eanur and the Witch-king, kill a Nazgûl is a complicated task. Why? Well, in the fellowship of the ring, the flood of Bruinen (with the use of Elrond's ring and Gandalf 'magic') didnt destroy the 8 Nazgûl. Only the Horses.
The shot of Legolas' bow at Anduin river killed the fellbeast and the Nazgûl fell from a high height, and he didnt die.
I think that only "magical" or special weapons could harm the Nazgûl. There is a quote from Gandalf about this matter:
"But Saruman has long studied the arts of the Enemy himself, and thus we have often been able to forestall him. It was by the devices of Saruman that we drove him from Dol Guldur. It might be that he had found >some weapons that would drive back the Nine".
And even the destruction of the Witch-king in the fight against Éowyn has a whole ambiguous charge similar to the fall of Shakespeare's Macbeth. That is, in Shakespeare's work, no man born of a woman could defeat the character (and a man "born" by a caesarean defeated him). In Tolkien, a Hobbit wielding (against many odds) an "enchanted" sword broke a Nazgûl's "protection spell" for Éowyn (a woman) to deliver the final blow.

These journeys are one of the best videos on the channel! For me Witch King is far more creepy and far more scary than Sauron in some elements, although he was defeated, he crushed Northern kingdom, Line of the King was broken by his hand, he caused more trouble to Middleearth than any other villian, except Sauron and Morgoth!
James once again great and interesting video!

He's one smart ghoulish cookie, considering the level of strategy it took to erode and defeat all the different kingdoms.
If that was present as a human that guy must have been a hero of his time. Ruling many lands most likely. And in addition being a sorcerer possibly aswell, if that wasn't his rings doing. A hero, till he fell of course. Tragic really.

I think that Arvedui's death is a proof for a question for many fans of LOTR about the powers and abilities of Sauron and if he could control the weather for his purposes.
"Do not mount on this sea-monster! If they have them, let the seamen bring us food and other things that we need, and you may stay here till the Witch-king goes home. For in summer his power wanes; but now his breath is deadly, and his cold arm is long."
    And:
"But Arvedui did not take his counsel. He thanked him, and at parting gave him his ring [the Ring of Barahir], saying: 'This is a ring of worth beyond your reckoning. For its ancientry alone. It has no power, save the esteem in which those hold it who love my house. It will not help you, but if ever you are in need, my kin will ransom it with great store of all that you desire."
The final proof is the great storm at Emyn Muil controled by Sauron:
" The skirts of the storm were lifting, ragged and wet, and the main battle had passed to spread its great wings over the Emyn Muil, upon which the dark thought of Sauron brooded for a while. Thence it turned, smiting the Vale of Anduin with hail and lightning, and casting its shadow upon Minas Tirith with threat of war. Then, lowering in the mountains, and gathering its great spires, it rolled on slowly over Gondor and the skirts of Rohan, until far away the Riders on the plain saw its black towers moving behind the sun, as they rode into the West"

I love the video and the format lines up perfectly with how Tolkien tells his stories. Although there are a number of character histories out there, I would love to see this format applied to a geographic area, such as The Shire. When did it first come to be? What are the major epochs of this Hobbit home? What changes happened throughout the ages, including after the LoTR?

I have theory about the Morgul blade that the witch king has. What if the morgul blade was originally owned by Beren and it was the same the dagger that cut the Silmarllion from Melkor crown. Then Melkor in anger take the broke dagger for what it did. He then re-forged it to corrupt the dagger and made it into the Morgul blade. Then it was lost in the final battle where he was captured. His second lieutenant Sauron found the Morgul blade and had it, but didn't use it until the second age. He then passed it on to the Witch King. Even at Weathertop Aragorn sings about Beren and Luthien. It only makes sense that the dagger that they use in the story should come back. Continuing that then Frodo is stabbed in the chest by the very blade that Beren once used. Frodo is ultimately healed by the same plant that healed Beren.

What other properties does the one ring have? We only witness the "invisibility" effect when Bilbo and Frodo wear the ring, and we know of the lore of the one ring's control of the other rings Sauron created to corrupt the humans and dwarves. Did Sauron become "invisible" when he wore the ring? What else is known about its powers?

I was wondering what you think of in the Unfinished Tales Volume 9, Originally he was The Wizard-King of Numanor of the Istari who was a Maiar of Gandalf & the other 4. He then later became the Witch King in the final version as a man who takes a ring. But he does face Gandalf in Minas Tirith but Rohan arrives in time.
