Hi Lee. Nice to hear you say you would do Van der Graaf even if not much people watched. That's what helps such bands not to get forgotten. Continue the great work. Peter can be so emotional sometimes. Love it.
This is song has a sequel of sorts called Easy to Slip Away on the Peter Hammill album Chameleon in the Shadow of the Night. It's about the friends mentioned in this song and how they all drifted apart over the years.
After this one, you should hear Peter Hammill’s solo track "Easy to Slip Away" - lyrically, it's something of a sequel to this song, and also very beautiful (though in a very different way!)
The first VdGG album was intended to be a Peter Hammill album, but contract shenanigans dictated that it be released as a VdGG album, so Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other is the first proper VdGG album. The first album Aerosol Grey Machine is more of a psychedelic pop album, definitely not prog rock yet. That said, they rerecorded Squid/Octopus during the Pawn Hearts sessions, and that is must hear; it rules so hard -- maybe the craziest VdGG ever sounded.
Hi. Never saw your channel before. Yes, VDGG is very special. I've been a fan since 1971 and was lucky enough to see them at the Beacon Theatre in Oct. '76, when Jackson was with them. Also saw them a few times as a three piece. My favorite band. Hammill is an amazing writer and singer.
VDGG was the first group i bought album off back in 73 at 13 . All their albums with Jackson presenter are amazing. My favorites are Godbluff and Still Life , but all ørevoks and later albums have classic Tracks . Their first album had #afterwards « which is still amazing to listen to. Many see Pawn Hearts as their best. I prefer the easier more classic inspirerer , but everything at its time . Saw them last year with my son . Good to have seen them , Even ifv Jackson is not with them. SAW him with Gabriel tough …
Excellent. I used to have the single of this. The other side being Boat of a Million Years, which I prefer personally. You should try to react to Pawn Hearts, but it's not so easy to break down the tracks.
This is a special song for me - it was 'our' song for almost 30 years before my wife died in 2017. There's a purity and innocence in the music and vocals that remains just beyond reach. And they were still performing it in 2022 (sans Jackson) th-cam.com/video/3Vmf6gHlauk/w-d-xo.html
You’re missing out! I know they are a severe case of acquired taste but once you get that taste… nothing tastes the same! lol But yeah this is beautiful song. absolutely gorgeous.

What a stunningly beautiful track by VDGG. Wow. Thanks, Jason S for such a beautiful request.
Incredible track. This band was on another level.
One of the most beautiful pieces ever written Heard it first I 1981 and I've never tired of it. Great choice.

yesss, they are connected

One of the first things I heard from VdGG (thanks, John Peel!) and still one of my favourites.

Every time I hear this song I think on Georg Friedrich Händel and that If he would live in the 1970's, he would maybe had made music like this song.🙂
Just lovely! Thanks Jason!

He’s one of my favorite finds of the whole entire channel. Such a special dude. So much talent in one band
They deserved better
This song was a favourite of Tony Stratton Smith, founder/owner of Charisma Records. VdGG were the first band he signed to the label.

Working to hard finally got to this song and now I'm sobbing.
Don't know to thank you or not.
Change is in order, deeply affected by this band. 😘
All good tracks on this album.

Please get to Sleepwalkers soon. It might be my favorite song.

I'm not a fan of the band, with the exception of this track which is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

@@L33Reacts This is one of the very few songs where as soon as I heard it I had to go out and buy it.
