Van Der Graaf Generator ,yes yes,,I remember buying their albums and playing them for my friends and they couldn't stand them. They missed a really great band.
Great observation at the end about how far ahead of their time they were. For example, at some points in this song, I'm getting a mix of Filter and System of a Down and Collective Soul for example, plus some other much more modern stuff. It's really fascinating looking back on it from that context.
Absolutely insane how ahead of the curve they were. They must have been farsighted in some kind of way lol or they were just that good. No one got them at the time like they do now though probably. For a long time they were probably the only band to sound anything like this
i think the emotion in this song comes from the content, the inquisition against witchcraft that empowered people to kill a lot of good people too. lots of esoteric references to magic. the organ is so funky, and the jazzy sax is cool, and even a patented dying animal sax solo at the end 👍 classic VDGG
Not to be "that guy", but the cover shows a Van de Graaff Generator. Robert J. Van de Graaff died in 1967, and his name was in the paper when the band was looking for potential band names.
The album title comes from a John Minton (died 1674) poem - "when we're all awash in a sea of blood, the least we can do is wave to each other"
Thank you. I did occasionally wonder but, of course, no internet back then.
Great post👍
You could almost imagine this in a soundtrack for a horror movie...VDGG triumphs again
Shout out to Jason S!! You rock! Thanks Lee! Awesome reaction!
The first 'prog' album we fell in love with and owned...Bought it age 15 in 1971...Still listen to it now...
Incredible sound with these lyrics. Wonderful 👍
Thank you
Looking forward to this one. Can't wait for your reaction to the historical details - "in the year 1486' etc. - and the amazing outro.
After The Flood on this album is incredible. Please give this a listen.
it's a real doozy! but luckily Out of My Book's softness helps balance it out a little 😁
My favorite band since 1971. (USA)
Anything with Peter Hammill I want to hear it! ❤ Period

They are in the top 5 of my favorite finds on here. Just incredible work all around.
I can never get enough VDGG In my life. Still think the band are underappreciated even in prog circles. Incredible. 😍🎵🎵
Except in Italy (where they were insanely popular, somehow)

This band is like nothing else
You still have many treats to come, including from their comeback albums between 2005-2016
..or even ....Vital!
Love it. Check out their "Shamal".
The album cover shows a Van Der Graaf Generator in the sea (or some other body of water).
Not to be "that guy", but the cover shows a Van de Graaff Generator.
