    Hearing your philosophy on homeschooling was really helpful to me. I'm also a homeschooling mom, and I tend to really push myself hard to get everything done. However, I also realize a lot of the non-core subjects (everything besides reading, writing, and math) will be mostly forgotten and not necessary to know for the future. I hope to learn to step back more, like you have. It was nice to hear you say that it doesn't help to try to cover everything, and in the end, it is most important to spend quality time with your kids.Those were wise words and great advise to any homeschooling mom.

    Thanks for the wonderful explanation of the how's any why's of a child led education. I'm a homeschool mom of 8 whose youngest two just started university this year. What they learned and experienced growing up on the farm has helped them determine what they want to do with their life. One daughter is an accomplished horse trainer who teaches people how to help their horses. Two (including a daughter who is also a cabinet maker) work in stone masonry. One serves in the military, one (self taught) writes code for a large software company. Another daughter is a caregiver for special needs. They all found direction in life by making choices about what they studied at home, based on their interests.
    You have a beautiful family life, and l love checking in on you on TH-cam! Thanks for sharing!

    It's chaos here in my house trying to homeschool our 7 and 5 year old with a 3, 2, and 6 month old. Everyday I feel like I'm wasting time and yet never having free time. It's busy but non productive. I'm low-key drowning 😅 I genuinely pray everyday for God to help me navigate this all. Worst part is mom guilt. I just want to enjoy all this.

      I'm a mom to 8 and I have been there, you will be okay . Your oldest is young still , I made the mistake of pushing my oldest to read so quickly and believing he needed a 7 hour school day with all the subjects. Enjoy this season of motherhood and the precious little years.

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Oh friend. Please give yourself grace. This is a very busy season! But your kids are at a perfect age for a gentle intro to homeschooling. Read alouds while you’re nursing…. A little one on one learning time with mom in the afternoon during baby naptime… lots and lots of play time ! Kids learn so much just through free play.

      If it helps you feel better we don’t start any writing or sit down work until 8yo usually. It took me 1 hour to do hs until I had 3 above 7yo basically. Lots of talking, reading, reasoning with each other, and outside time.

    I’m in my 5th year homeschooling and I still fall into the overschooling trap. We all do so much better with a fun relaxed homeschool. These videos are encouraging to me that my kids are learning and will be functioning teens who grow into capable adults! Even if we don’t do a spelling or grammar curriculum 🤪

    We’re doing the same this year switching back and forth between history and science units instead of rotating daily for the same reason. We’re also slowing down our mornings, but opposite of you. Giving them extra hours right away for them to work on their own things at their own pace, then we start of morning group time at 10:30 and go until lunch. So far so good! Also…cracked up because I picked the same read aloud today! 😅

    I certainly wish when I was raising my 3 children we had TH-cam channels like yours that you help by telling other mothers how you do your teaching. When our group did homeschool I found it extremely hard or maybe I was afraid I couldn’t teach 3 at a time. I tried so hard to learn and my husband and I read everything we could and what curriculum to use. We ended up with all our children in a private Christian School. Once they were in high school I let them decide what they preferred to do and they all ended up graduating in Public School but atleast they all had a great foundation. I feel they did and when they got in Public they all found something they wanted to do that if I would’ve homeschooled or if they stayed in private they would’ve missed the opportunity to branch out and get into some extra curriculum. I look back and feel like a failure that I was afraid of homeschooling because I truly wanted to do that. I ordered information and some different curriculums but I guess you would say I chickened out. Oh well one is a teacher, I have a Military Son that fought in Iraq and he’s been in 20yrs and a Probation Officer. Atleast they made something out of themselves. You’re awesome Julie and God has blessed your children with wonderful parents. God Bless🦋💜

    Your school philosophy is beautiful and PRACTICAL. I myself wondered so often what is the point of trying to cover everything to the point of being stressed out if not everything is going to be an useful tool in adulthood..yes we need to know the basics in other non core subjects so we can understand the world around us but we should encourage growth in areas where kids clearly display a specific interest because they will end up pursuing work in those domains. That is PRACTICAL and education should be practical...teach them SKILLS.. knowledge is not enough to succeed in life. God's WISDOM is most important.

Elsie’s pie looked so yummy; Jeremiah’s sword looked pretty fierce so good idea to have someone take it while he wrestled his brother and practiced reading! My children learned the most traveling to science, history, art museums, historical sites, Washington DC, state Capitol buildings. As a military family we had the benefit of living in various places. I also did a regular curriculum. I did challenge them in their area of interest. Civil Air Patrol was instrumental in my son majoring in Aviation. Art encouraged my daughter to become an architect and engineer though she did not excel in Math until college. Writing and Reading and long discussion on current event topics and visiting my great aunt in the care center on a regular basis led to my daughter being an intelligent analyst as well as a hospital and hospice chaplain.

My son is currently working through it, and enjoying! 😅 They (Queen Homeschool) also offer a natural health/anatomy course, that includes natural medicine alternatives. 🥰

    Oh Julie. I haven't been able to comment in a long time, but Gracie has so been enjoying writing to Elsie. And I just so love how, when I'm finally able to sit down and watch a video of yours, there's always something or some season you're going through that is just so relatable. We just had our eighth baby a year ago in August and between the many littles and now two adult children in the home coming and going, I too have been feeling this urgency from the Lord to sloooow the mornings down. Just taking that pressure off first thing, and creating a time of fellowship has been such a breath of fresh air. It's definitely not always perfect, little ones still bounce off the walls and interrupt. Chaos still sometimes seems to triumph. But I think just starting the day off that way especially puts my own heart and mind in the right place and allows me to remember what's most important every morning before the demands of the day hit. It's personally been a more chaotic season than others in our family so you and your sweet family are such an encouragement. I love that you're willing to share the not so perfect days for those of us that need to see that real life, even when filled with Jesus and love, can be messy and all the while cheering us on and reminding us even the messy days are worth it!!!! 💛 The Lord's been so sweetly reminding me, these physically harder days when I struggle to see much progress, to hold fast my confidence in HIM and that the work He's doing, He will be faithful to complete!!

    • @jasonandjulie
      @jasonandjulie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We’ve been through a more chaotic season recently too. As the ages and stages of the kids continue to change I have to keep adjusting 🙃 There isn’t one “right way” that is an easy answer when it comes to parenting… yet the Lord does know the right way for the season we’re in. Thank you for your encouraging words! They are appreciated 💗

    If I had to do it all over again for my high schoolers I would have spent time teaching ‘ACT for Dummies’ (or SAT). Doing so will help them prepare for the exams should they pursue college.
    Persuasive writing and speaking is also good to focus on. Colleges focus on essay writing in their exams and in a majority of class exams.

    Thank you so much for this homeschool video. It’s one of my biggest priorities in life rn..I even took notes😅 Im working on persuading my husband to do more of a direct delighted learning style/ family subjects together as much as possible. We just do individual subjects through an intense curriculum rn even Bible which makes me sad bc I want to look back and remember the things we did together like you said and I want that to be as many subjects as we can do together. My hubby wants a detailed schedule of what I would be doing daily so your checkbox charts will help with that and I’ll probably need to add what we will do for Bible, read alouds, history/science. I’m really hoping this yr he will allow me to experiment with this style of learning and that he will notice and understand more of the joy in the journey of helping our children be more excited to learn together and follow their interests and be excited with them, and the liveliness,excitement, energy and cooperation it can bring into a family right now and that we can experience many benefits from the childrens freedom to work hard and put their energy toward their passions. You seem to have a balanced way of doing that while also keeping up with core subjects. Not to mention it would be way more cost effective to do family subjects as much as we can, I feel like we have wasted curriculum that I just couldn’t push through to try and -get done- so it’s just left blank bc I’m not going to stress myself out anymore to get it all accomplished. I was pushing quantity so much that the quality was going downhill and I’d way rather take the time we want to delve into subjects we enjoy and get a deeper understanding if we really like it.
    Did you talk about what you were going to do for history? What does Leo do again for history?

    Will they be able to go to a higher level of learning. A college where you learn about physics etc.

      Well yes, they could go on to college if they wish. But you don’t have to go to college to start learning physics. I’ve already had one child go through a physics and chemistry course.

    What resources did your kids use to learn leather working?

      We got some free scraps from a woman who does upholstering so they had plenty of material to make mistakes on 😄 They watched TH-cam videos to learn some techniques and just kept practicing!
