- Tucked away in a quiet, non descript St. Louis suburb lives a music legend, a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and a five time Grammy award winner. Say hello to St. Louisan Dennis Edwards. Edwards was the lead singer of the Temptations. Yes, those Temptations. His gritty, soulful, gospel voice was the sound of the Motown group in the late 60s and 70s.

Paul Willams .was and always will be the most soulful.and most underrated of all the temps,lead singers.And he could dance.

David Ruffin is my all time favorite singer noone touching him. But Mr. Edwards brougfht that south soul to the group. He brought that emotion from gospel feel mix with a little funk. That's what I got when I heard him singing. Everything happens for a reason. I'm glad things played out the way it did. Just wish david wasn't on drugs. R.I.P. to The Temptations.
He made the Temptations far greater than they had been after Ruffin left. Both were great. Dennis was an icon. RIP Dennis. Your greatness live on.

For example with the Temptations, David Ruffin as "the lead singer" the spot was filled by Dennis Edwards; look how many times every positions and/or spots have been filled except Otis. I'm sure there is someone living who can fill Otis position when that day comes. Whether you singing in a group, working on a job, being married, founder/CEO of a company, etc., these positions can be filled by another person who brings their unique skills, talents, love, etc.

I grew up in the 1960s, and the Temptations were a huge part of the music culture. Their songs are classic, as far as I concerned. Dennis Edwards was a great replacement for David Ruffin. Both great singers. RIP.

I was not even born when David Ruffin was the lead but after hearing his strong beautiful voice it was so sad how drugs messed him up. Then when Dennis Edwards came his voice mesmerized me. Not only did he have a strong , gospel beautiful voice, He was good looking to. The Temptations will always be remembered and there music shall live on!!!.
RIP Dennis. You and David brought that 🔥🔥 sauce to the soul food music of the Temps.

Right. David Ruffin had that soul, rough sound, smooth. Dennis reminded me of the church, just down right that preacher's son. just make you want to stand up. After he left, to me Ollie Woodson was the last best lead they had. He was a little of both. All 3 had their own style that left a permanent mark on the Tempts.

Trust me.. Its NOT an easy task to replace a Iconic Lead singer like David Ruffin,and make it happen... Not many bands can recover from the loss of a Lead Singer.. But the Dennis DID pull it off..... There Could NOT have been a better replacement than Dennis.... XXXCELLENT WORK.

David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards and Oille Woodson had Beautiful talents with The Temptations. David the 60's Lead Man ,Dennis the 70's Lead Man,Ollie the 80's Lead Man. All contribute to the Temptations being a Legendary Group Perosonally I love Paul Williams.

I'm a huge Temptation fan and I think David Ruffin had one of the best tenor/baritones of all time. Dennis Edwards also was a great baritone and great replacement for David. Neither was better, just different. One can have massive talent, but if you are not utilizing your gift, you get left behind. If David had not become addicted to cocaine, who knows what height he could have achieved.

Chris J Dennis was a strong singer. Very powerful. And I think that is why his voice has changed so much now due to all that strain
Sho ya right..that gritty shotgun style singing will do it every time.. James Brown..Bobby Womack..the late great Otis Redding at one time had trouble with his voice and over the years Rick James had to tone it down also..check out his album "Deeper Still".
I believe each and every one of the Temptations added a new and positive growing evolution to the group during their time with the group. I saw them as adding another flavor to the cooking pot when it was needed or necessary and it was never a negative or bad seasoning. The Temptations just got better and better for each and every time the big spoon was put in the pot.. It is/was our Memories... they allowed us to capture forever and ever, along the ride during our lives too.

Very interesting clip. He's a piece of rock history and a fine man. And yes he did reign during a very exciting time. Rip to Norman Whitfield who wrote and produced those late 60s-early 70s classics.
People still going to see Otis ,I guess Ruffin was wrong.
I hope that Dennis is still enjoying his retirement. These guys were, without doubt, the best.

Dennis died late 80's early 90's, they're saying he was being abused before his death & it was suspicious! We never heard what happened! 😥
Had a chat with Dennis at Ipswich around 2002. Got him to sign the Album "Magnificent Seven". Such a Nice "normal" chap then. Glad he's back to "normal" now. We were both born same month same year.

I was in love with this man back in the day, my first born was name Dennis becuz of him, I pray he is well & doing fine.🙏
He always kept it real about everything and I love that about him. Whether he was wrong or right, he always stayed true to himself and was honest about who he was and what he did and didn’t do.
I once had the pleasure of meeting him years ago in Cleveland, Ohio….a very nice guy.

This guy comes off as a class act. I can see why the Temptations recruited him after David Ruffin flamed out. You'd want someone who more or less has a good head on his shoulders to be your new front man.
And if I may say so, Edwards' best moment with the Temptations was "Power." That anthem was made for him, and he owned it.
Dennis could do something with his voice that David couldn't do, he had his own style both could sing in there own style. so don't try to compare the two.

I used to see these guys at our local theater in Chicsgo when David led. They were ALL good, all the time. All except the group's founder Otis sang lead. Maybe there is an obscure song somewhere with his singing but l don't know. Together they were a great act and each man added his skill snd importance. I was a young teen and did not think they were cute but all standing 6 feet and above, my goodness they were so fine and masculine. It is hard to have lost so many because they were full of life. Rivhard Street was leading the Monitors and Dennis Edwards was with the Contours at that time. The Contours were WILD, the Monitors classy. I dug them all!!
I think the temps classic 5 with Dennis is the classic 6 cause Dennis voice was out of sight so soulful
Otis Williams was the originator of the group. It was Otis that kept the group together. although David was a great singer, Otis wasn't going to let David screw up the group with his drug use and his superior attitude. Otis hired Dennis to show David he was replaceable. Dennis proved he was just as good as David and the TEMPTATIONS moved on to what they are today. Dennis deserves credit for the groups success. And if it wasn't for Otis Williams the TEMPTATIONS wouldn't be in the Hall of Fame

David was an awesome singer, but no singer should think they can't be replaced. Initally I used to think that the Temps were no longer the real Temps, but Dennis held his own. In my opinion they were equally great singers, and I'm so glad that Dennis is still alive & seems happy. God bless Dennis' mom who stepped in and helped her son. A good mother means so much in one's life.
