I would argue Johnny's rendition of Hurt is the most searingly powerful track he ever laid down. Near the end of his life, when he may have been considering his entry into eternity. The video clip shows the deep soul wounding pain of his life's regrets. Perhaps his sins. People he's hurt. Those of us who've been around for some time can relate. Regrets can be a heavy, heavy burden.
Agreed. I was doing some ready recently and found out Johnny’s stipulation for providing this vocal was their permission to cover One for his American Recordings series. And they viewed that as such a complement. Pretty cool.

But to me what elevated Hurt as one of the best works of art in American history is when it was paired with the video and you get a visual of him as an old man with his life coming to an close whilst being set in his home with June Carter. And flashing memories from when he was younger as well as the defunct broken down Museum of Cash. Its one of the most moving pieces of art I’ve ever seen in any genre. It just hits different than anything else. I still can’t get through it without tearing up.

At the time I was listening to this I was reading the Jon Shannow novels by David Gemmel. It was an amazing fit for the themes and the character in those books.

What most people miss about the meaning of this song, is that it is the final track of U2 most experimental work (Zooropa), which is a jewel in electronic experimentation for all but the last track (The Wanderer): hence, at the end of the whole listen, one is simply overwhelmed by a mesmerizing sense of melancholy and nostalgia. Genius finale by a genius (back then, not certainly - sadly - now ) band.

I listen to this song and remember crouching under our kitchen window on Sundays. My father would be playing and singing Sunday Morning Coming Down by Johnny Cash. I would crouch to hide and just listen. Both men are no longer with us. This is another Sunday when I watch/play this, think about my dad, know I'll see him in heaven and we can go to a Johnny Cash show together.

Bono also wrote 'Love Rescue Me' for Bob Dylan during the Rattle & Hum days. There's a version of Dylan singing the song by himself somewhere in the U2 vault. Dylan's record company wouldn't let him release it on R&H-- But the album version does have him singing a verse or two along with the backing vocals. Bono went through a pretty amazing period from 87-94-- He wrote songs for Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash-- All of three of them were amazing tunes.

Came across this song and so some reason or another this song made me reconsider my decision to leave her. It’s been close to 10 years and we are still together and happy as ever. My favourite Cash song and written by the awesome U2. My favourite version of this is on Cash's Hurt album, its slightly slower than this version. Set Playback to 90/90% speed and it's that slow, to me it's more intense/meaningful.

I am impressed with how U2 takes a back seat to Cash in the video. I'm not a country guy other than a couple of the other old outlaws who were contemporaries of Cash, but Cash was simply special up on the pedistal of greats with guys like Dillon. Well done recognizing greatness U2!
When I was younger my dad and mom would bring our family camping .Music was always served , Johnny Cash was always playing on the 8 track ❤ , I was fortunate enough to have seen Johnny Cash in Toronto Canada at Massey Hall, not with my dad 💔 but I'm so blessed to have those memories ❤

It's certainly a fantastic combination. Reminds me of the Leonard Cohen/U2 collaboration- grabs you instantly and is absolutely first rate.

Bono also wrote 'Love Rescue Me' for Bob Dylan during the Rattle & Hum days. There's a version of Dylan singing the song by himself somewhere in the U2 vault. Dylan's record company wouldn't let him release it on R&H-- But the album version does have him singing a verse or two along with the backing vocals.
Bono went through a pretty amazing period from 87-94-- He wrote songs for Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash-- All of three of them were amazing tunes.

The love of my life love this son. He attended the U2 concert in L.A. and send me a pic of the video playing this song during intermission. Gosh, being in love hurts! Heard this on radio at work other day and knew it was Johnny cash but never knew he did a song with U2. It's grown on me alot
It was Bono who wrote the lyrics and U2 who wrote the music (guess Edge did the most of that work).
As we all know, Bono was mean't to sing this until he heard Johnny's version and immediately handed it over. Johnny a God on earth and now amongst the Gods. RIP fella.

Came across this song and so some reason or another this song made me reconsider my decision to leave her. It’s been close to 10 years and we are still together and happy as ever. My favourite Cash song and written by the awesome U2. My favourite version of this is on Cash's Hurt album, its slightly slower than this version. Set Playback to 90/90% speed and it's that slow, to me it's more intense/meaningful.

I am impressed with how U2 takes a back seat to Cash in the video. I'm not a country guy other than a couple of the other old outlaws who were contemporaries of Cash, but Cash was simply special up on the pedistal of greats with guys like Dillon. Well done recognizing greatness U2!

When I was younger my dad and mom would bring our family camping .Music was always served , Johnny Cash was always playing on the 8 track ❤ , I was fortunate enough to have seen Johnny Cash in Toronto Canada at Massey Hall, not with my dad 💔 but I'm so blessed to have those memories ❤
