WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth (Known as Exciting Pro Wrestling 4 in Japan) is a professional wrestling video game released on the PlayStation 2 console by THQ and developed by Yuke's. It is part of the WWE SmackDown! video game series based on the professional wrestling promotion World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). This game was the sequel to WWF SmackDown! A good example of the tiny details that were in this game is RVD and Eddie both had their own frog splash animation to show the difference,instead of simply giving them both the same frog splash. Adds to the character of both.
Eddie and d lo Brown both had different frog splash animations in Smackdown 2 two games previous to this you can't f****** the aerial moves people playing way too much attention two flippy s*** do a forward getting away with that lol
Smackdown Shut Your Shut mouth is a damn great game. I played this game for hours when I was a kid and I still play it to this day. The graphics were great, the gameplay was fun, create a wrestler was more detailed and season mode was just great. For it's time being, was one of the best wrestling and this beats any of today's WWE games. Smackdown Shut Your Mouth was great game but Smackdown Here Comes The Pian was better. Trust me.
I'd prefer this game over any of today's WWE games. Not to say that today's WWE games were bad, I just enjoy playing this game a lot more.

I'm actually doing a season mode with Undertaker in SmackDown SYM!!! this game is still fun to this day in 2018

This and Here Comes the Pain are by far the best wwe games out there and considering these are now 12 years old that is really saying something. I played WWE 2K16 they other day loaded up a career mode with a created superstar and was bored after an hour of game play. No interesting story lines to follow just one big grind. It's a really shame to see how these games have fallen, however this isn't a surprise as most franchise games that release year upon year never really improve, insted they prefer to take your money and run.

Yeah because the newer games have a good season mode, backstage areas, and a game engine that hasn't been used since 2000, right? -_-
How the fuck are 30 years of WM, Attitude Era and Showcase mode are "basically season modes with more options and content?" All of these are just linear story modes. Tell me, what more content does it have? Can you choose what path you want to take in branching storylines, or edit the Raw and Smackdown rosters, set who's a heel or face, or challenge for any title in these new modes?
What replay value do these new modes have? How many times are we going to play the same thing over and over again? At least with the classic season mode it has much higher replay value due to all the variables we can set.
HCTP and No Mercy are the two greatest wrestling games.
Bella's Dad No Mercy is overrated because of the Attitude Era roster.The Game Cube games are superior by far especially Day Of Reckoning 2!
Man I miss when the wrestling games used to be fun, and creative and had humor, and great replay value.

I still have my copy of this game, I had it since it came out in 2002. This was also the first Smackdown game with the WWE name instead of the WWF, due to the company being forced to change its name by the World Wildlife Fund earlier in the year.

Shut Your Mouth had and still has the best season mode out of any Wrestling game on the market today. That's saying something. Oh, and that's not opinion, that's fact. Only WrestleMania 21 and Day of Reckoning 2 can compare.

Can't quite agree with you here. For me, the ideal season mode was in SD2. 1) It was unlimited. 2) You could switch wrestlers whenever you liked. 3) Stuff did revolve around you. Cutscenes here and there are nice, but I like the stuff that I imagined. I didn't really liked being stuck with one superstar for 2 years and then to replay the same scenarios with different wrestlers. This fact and absence of Scott Hall made a game not that great for me. Also I didn't like HBKs attires. This game would be perfect with abovementioned details. Like you're playing as RVD, doing you stuff in mid-card, battling between Hardcore and Intercontinental title. Then the nWo storyline starts, you immediatey switch to Scott Hall and play by your rules, wrecking havoc. Then you get bored and you switch to Benoit or Raven, and the rest of the story is still going with different cutscenes appearing from time to time.

I really wish All-Stars did have it, All-Stars is a lot of fun but I imagine a rumble mode would've been utter chaos and insanity. The game had a big enough roster for it too, especially if you had the Dlc characters (I do because I own the 3DS Version which contains all DLC built in).

This game holds up extremely well! It still looks great today! I don’t know what they did but the character models just look excellent here! The Arenas too! It was all really polished and looks like they really took their time with this game! Worth every cent!

Smackdown Shut your Mouth was fun as hell and I'm still playing it right now. I created a shit load of Created Wrestlers who wrestled in WWE in 2002 who didn't appear in the Game as well as Guys who were in WCW and other promotions, such as, Goldberg and Sting too.

This and SVR 2006 are the only game where Shawn Michaels looks exactly like he did in real life.
This is still such a timeless classic, I think I have played hours upon hours in this game over the years playing and creating characters in this. Not only is the gameplay fun and entertaining, it has one of the best career story modes in the entire Yukes series.

The BiG Meer Podcast I like HCTP, but SYM is #1 in my opinion. Great roster. I loved the off and on commentary by Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler. The create-a-wrestler is great (I created Tommy Dreamer, Goldberg, Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko, Scott Hall, Jacqueline, etc.)

This was my first SmackDown! game I ever bought. I got it from Blockbuster back in Spring 2004 and had a blast with it. This became my favorite SmackDown! game.
Smackdown: SYM > Any WWE game after SVR'10 in my opinion.

Wwe 13 and 14 are damned good. 13 is my favorite, and I've been playing WWF games since Wrestlemania on the NES. SvR 2006 is a close 2nd place, and SYM is 3rd.

I remember renting this game from Rogers Video quite a bit, back when video stores existed. Pick up this and some snacks and that was a solid weekend at the time. I played HCTP the most but this is the one that really got me started with the series.
We would rather have this EXACT GAME with the modern paced gameplay and animations with a roster of 400 wrestlers and the same Story Mode, than what they make now.. that’s what WWE needs to understand
R.V.D was one of my favs from this game on.. The 5* frogsplash looked so devastating...

this is still to this day my favorite smackdown all the way through to WWE 2k19 I've almost bought a PS2 again just to buy this game back. I always had to sell my system and games to buy the next one. I wish all the time that I would of been able to hold on to all if them because I would have a massive library like you do.

This game absolutely KILLED Wrestlemania X8 (and basically every gamecube wrestling game to come, even day of reckoning). Way better gameplay, way more match types, a season mode, better wrestlers, fun ass backstage areas. The only things i didnt like were 3 things: Create a wrestler (not terrible but still ehhh), not being able to break up submission holds (which actually helped in season mode when you have to face 5 others in a hell in a cell so once again, ehh) and the counter button was kinda annoying (they fixed it in next year's Here Comes the Pain). Still one of the best wrestling games, top 5 defintely of all time.

I loved the game and traded it in to gamestop for 50 dollars, the guy couldnt believe it he scanned it like three times before calling his boss over to make sure it was right.
Just Bring It was a fucking slap in the face and I'll explain why. When Know Your Role came out eight months after the first Smackdown and was basically the same game with more accessories, the developers/publisher said it was because they were focusing on making the next game, a PS2 exclusive, something truly special. Well, that was a big, fat lie. The first of many THQ told regarding their wrestling titles. Instead, Just Bring It had basically the same gameplay, so it was Acclaim all over again. The problem though, came when Sanders Keel explained that the reason Just Bring It wasn't as in-depth and unique as they had hoped was because *they spent so much time and effort working on Know Your Role that they weren't able to give JBI the attention it deserved.* That blew my mind.
The actual game wasn't horrible, but it was a massive disappointment and the only reason I don't consider it the worst Smackdown game is because SvR08 stole that honor and will never give it back.
Thankfully, SYM righted every wrong and became the best wrestling game ever released on a Sony console in the U.S. The characters just look _right_, you know what I mean? More importantly they FEEL right, thanks to the stance, running and walking animations... stance especially. They removed all of that stuff in SvR07 and I hate them for it. This game was also when they really started including tons of character specific moves. They became so invested in this that a good portion of guys had their own basic moves, like Clotheslines and Suplexes. Seriously, go back and take a look at how many different Suplexes are in this game and HCTP. Off the top of my head: Jericho, Triple H, Stevie Richards, Undertaker, Benoit and The Rock. Again, these aren't special moves... they are simple ones, yet they were animated with care and great detail.
Anyone who has never played this or HCTP, you really should. I recommend playing as Jericho in the newer games first, then use him in this one. SYM was the first, and sadly one of the last, game where you felt like you were controlling individuals. Not even No Mercy accomplished that, at least not as perfectly as SYM did. Goddamn, I love this game.

+J. Michael SVR2011 was awful. Lots of bugs in the gameplay, lots of moves in the create-a-moveset were removed. the moves weren't as good looking as they were in SVR2010 and every WWE game that came before. Lastly, the create-a-wrestler preset movesets were generic to the point where you were only given moves from certain wrestlers from the past that never or hardly did them with only their taunts and finishers. f.e, Jeff Hardy doing an angle lock takedown
MerrieMelodies Fan They really phoned that one in because WWE '12, their supposed reinvention of the series, was in the works. There's never a legitimate excuse for removing animations, though.

There are definitely things I like better in SYM. There are also things I like better in HCPT. I personally prefer HCTP but I can totally see how people could like SYM more. They are both incredible games.

I bought this, hctp and Smackdown 2 for virtually nothing at a local game store. It was one of those every once and awhile finds being that they were pretty much brand new.
I honestly loved all the Smackdown games till Smackdown vs Raw ruined the series and made the game more realistic and boring af. Smackdown Shut Your Mouth and Smackdown Here Comes the Pain are my favorite I still play them to this day.

Just bring it is such an anomaly on the ps2. This was true at the time next gen. If you look at just bring it compared to the last wwe game on the ps2 its beyond night and day. People love hctp but this is underrated and laid the ground work for what was to come
Such a nostalgia bomb... I remember this mostly as being the first game that I played that had a very large portion of the big 3 promotions major stars all in one game. If they weren’t in the game,they were easily made in CAW mode. I remember making a legit,true to life looking Goldberg for the first time in a WWE game with this one. It had his move set,entrance,tattoo-everything. He was my favorite wrestler,and with WCW (and the “Invasion” storyline being an absolute joke)going out of business,I wasn’t sure if I’d ever see him on TV wrestling again(which obviously happened sooner rather than later). So it was awesome to basically have him in the game and to take him through the season mode for me.
Also Howard’s Announcing was so great!

What I LOVE about this game is that it had an updated roster for it's time period, even the created superstars was loaded with characters! There isn't much to critique about this game except the CAW's..

Adding cities,etc as backstage areas would make much more sense now because of the 24/7 rules of the 24/7 championship and you forgot to mention that there's no time limit to meet anyone while roaming backstage
I got this with my ps2 back in the day and even my gran who had no idea what video games were and who wasn't a wrestling fan enjoyed it especially the backstage areas shoving wrestlers in shopping trolleys😂

This is my favorite WWE SD! game of all time even more than HCTP. I love the season mode the match types are all great most of my favorite wrestlers are here. And it was the game I got Christmas 2002 with my PlayStation 2 so yeah alot of nostalgia for me with this particular game I love SD! Shut Your Mouth.

this game is the GOAT along with No Mercy... if the current WWE games just adopted this Season Mode and how you unlock things by winning at PPVs etc. Give us legends and classic attires for current superstars instead of zombie and cyborg duplicates like the current games.... would be SO SIMPLE to sell more games like they used to.

This game was a massive upgrade from JBI. Models looked cartoony, yet real and accurate, it's the first game to include Lesnar, RVD, Booker T and Benoit had the noticeable missing tooth! Also, you could become Grand Slam Champion if you held all 4 major titles and it said so during entrances.
Something I really dislike about WWE games post-SYM is how dark the arena looks. It doesn't look as vivid as actual shows. Shut Your Mouth was the last game with good lighting.
I don’t know how did I miss it entirely. Looks equally if not better than Here comes the pain in gameplay and overall experience.
This was a great game, I used to play this game all the time back in the day.
This was the best one. A bit darker, but a better story than Just Bring it, and not too long like Shut Your Mouth and has original story lines so it didn’t get stale. And FINAL had blood.
This game was the shit! Only downfall in my opinion was you had to play season mode 300 times to unlock everything & I don't know if it's just my game but in my season I get thrown in a tag match all the fuckin' time & it's not a really fun match when the cpu acts like a bitch.

The problem with this game to me which made it so boring was the never ending storyline with Vince and Ric like it’s all about them more then it is you, I’m hardly even involved in it and I still see every cutscene made this game so painful for me

I swear idk why but I just don’t remember playing this game even tho I know I had it as a kid loved wrestling and had all the smackdowns but everything after smackdown 2 is a blur until here comes the pain then I can remember having good times playing that one idk why the in between smackdowns are just blurred out my memory lmao

Hey man, really digging your Wrestling game reviews. I was wondering if you ever played any of the Def Jam series wrestling games? They were developed by AKI and EA Canada? I remember I picked them specifically because of AKI and they play just like No Mercy. They weren't the greatest, but they were something different and interesting following the success of the THQ/AKI games. Definitely worth a check out. Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for NY. And just forget about Def Jam: Icon.....*shrugs* throws the formula completely away. LoL
