  • There are 56 countries which still have the death penalty, including Egypt, where executions are carried out by hanging. We ask a retired Egyptian executioner what made him pursue this morbid career and what the job entails.

I wouldn't get on my high horse so quickly if I were you. It's funny how even the worst shit becomes mundane after continuous exposure.
People who have to deal with death all the time become immune to it and it just becomes another routine. Soldiers in war zones especially would know how it is.
As Tecumseh Sherman once said; "I regard the death and mangling of a couple thousand men as a small affair, a kind of morning dash - and it may be well that we become so hardened."
Like I said, it's funny how even the worst shit becomes mundane after continuous exposure.
*Edit:* A lot of people seem to be missing the distinction between murdering someone and executing them. I know they sound the same - especially if you've planted yourselves on a moral pedestal- but the fact of the matter is they're not. If you're having trouble distinguishing between the two, I suggest googling.

You'd want someone with such a mindset as both, your surgeon, or your executioner (if it for whatever came to that).
It means he's calm while doing it, being calm reduces the chances of mistakes.
It does sound a bit morbid, I won't deny that, but I'd rather have that guy than some shivering dude, who let's it get to him.

They also enforced the end of slavery on the Arabs and other people's after abolision stopping future occurences of open slavery (it occurs now but usually slave labour and sex slavery under the radar, and the west isn't a large source of that), something which had been occuring for endless centuries, invented modern medicine, harnessed the power gride, the automobile, the aeroplane, computer technology and many things that save and enhance endless lives today, it's silly to generalize an entire race into their wrongs trying to weigh up who did worse, because you can also argue they contributed many positive things to counteract their wrongdoing, also do we judge those on the sins of the father? that's very old testamant, white people of the modern day aren't the ones throwing gays off buildings, chopping hands, stoning, drowning 'witches' or cracking bald people's heads open for gold, in fact they're actively harming themselves trying to help undeserving economic leeches.

Thank you VICE. As always, thought provoking looks into the world at large and ourselves. I'm a big fan of what you do. However, I feel it is important to call attention to your subtitles on two accounts: 1 - They are timed incorrectly and the selection of words for any given English subtitle can subvert that timing, making it almost impossible to read verbose translations in the given screen time. 2 - The subtitles should be in a separate file (which is conveniently provided by TH-cam) so that additional languages can be added to a video without disturbing the visual impact of your impressive work. The separated translation-subtitle text files are easily handled by a plethora of digital video players for circumstances where you're presenting your work on platforms and venues other than TH-cam. In regards to the timing, re-wording with shorter sentences will help, as well as shortening the screen time of "short" translations to give needed room for more screen time for the longer translations. It is a dis-service to the VICE canon of work to provide badly timed subtitles, and to "hard code" them so that beyond English, other native speakers are left out in the rain. Please consider the impact your material would have if you planned on reaching a larger audience in their native tongues. Just sayin'. Thank you again for your hard work. Regards, AD

It’s hard to really understand how someone would feel about having the job.
Death is stigmatic, so many who never have to soil their hands don’t really have a mental base to stand on when confronting a job like this. They frown upon those who do this because of the unnerving focus the executioner has on completing the task precisely. It seems alien, or psychotic.
But it’s more understandable than you may think.
An executioner’s job is cruel. You’re there to take a life, then get paid for it. But the executioner themselves are still people, and their duty is to remind their victims that they are still people, too. They are responsible for the personal care of the individual being sent to the gallows. Granting last requests. Monitoring health. Giving them the reassurance that even though the victim’s time is limited, their time will remain as humanly respected as possible. They are their victim’s last friend.
And then, when the time finally comes, their duty is to make sure that their victims enter the permanent sleep without suffering. This is the task that required such precision. If they lacked that precision, and weren’t able to grant their victim that last kindness of a painless death, the memory would truly haunt them as would the guilt.
And for many it did haunt them.
So they sharpened their blades to a razor’s edge. They measured the rope down to the last millimeter. They prepared in every way they humanly could almost to the point of obsession.
Because to them, doing anything less would be a disservice to the victim, and themselves.

You really have to be able to remove yourself from these situations to see the bigger picture. I was watching something else yesterday about a German executioners from the 1500s. In his diary he talked about sitting with the condemned person and trying to get them to understand they aren't a bad guy as its not personal and to get forgiveness for what they were about to do from the person they were going to do it to. He would do what he could to make them relaxed like allowing them to eat good food and get drunk. Part of this was for if they were relaxed when he brought his axe down they were less likley to move making it easier for him to do the job in 1 swing making it as painless as possible. I can understand that a lot of people who did this job saw it as very important to make it as easy and painless for the condemned person.

You cannot be ethical about stealing people‘s lives. If you do, you‘re a monster. And you‘ll never be worthy of love or forgiveness. You don‘t deserve it. Killers don‘t deserve that for they cannot even feel that themselves.
