Everybody talks about whether it deters, I don't know if it deters or not, but I know one thing. People who are hanged never re-offend. Since the UK abolished the death penalty in 1965, 1000s of lifers have gone on to kill again after being released on parole, 30 between 2001 and 2011 alone. Right now one of the murderers of Lee Rigby is costing the taxpayer 45,000 pounds a year to keep locked up and has spent that time radicalising other inmates and attacking and trying to kill prison warders. There is no sane rational reason for keeping dangerous murderers alive, and I can guarantee that however many innocent people have been executed due to a failure of the justice system, this figure will be dwarfed by the amount of people murdered by paroled murderers, at least three times a year if the period between 2001-2011 is taken as a general average. And those are just murders, there are many more instances of rapes, violent assaults and other crimes as well that could have been avoided if they had been given a measured drop and a sudden stop like they ought to have been given.
Perhaps there are things in life that you should refuse to see as once see. You can't unsee them. Sadly crime has such a huge impact on everyone. The criminals concerned, then the victims of the crime, there families, and the families of the criminals. Nobody wins even with capital punishment wrongs are never figured, everybody looses out.
He obviously doesn't understand the mechanics of Hanging and the different wait times around the world. Some leave them for an hour and then bring them down. The sentence is "Hanged by the Neck Until Dead" No mention of how long ………...
He clearly understands, he literally stated the reason why they were hung, that they were still alive and had to wait for them to die. Did you watch the video at all or just read the title? Because the title is the only one trying to sensationalise it, the magistrate gave an objective description of the events.
They used the British Long Drop system, hence the table of drops which calculates the length of drop required to break the neck. Unconsciousness is instant and guaranteed provided the procedure is followed to the letter. The noose is a halter with a running eye never a 'hangman knot'. The halter eye is positioned under the jaw to the side to dislocated the vertebrae which then sever the spinal chord. It's about as instant as a guillotine and a lot less messy. The body is left for 30 mins for nerve movement to cease. No one survives a correctly executed long drop hanging. The rope itself is measured for the drop then stretched with a sand bag weighing rhe same as the prisoner and left to dangle to stretch. It's then remeasured the rope is attached by a shackle through a steel whipped in eye to the chain which is secured to a steel or oak beam. At the other end of the rope is the noose. As described it uses a running eye and has a leather covering in the bight to stop the skin being broken by the coarse hemp. This system.had been perfected by the 1880s and was deployed across the Empire. Executioners were trained at Wandsworth in London. After Irish independence, the British Executioners would travel to Ireland to carry out Irish State executions as Ireland didn't train its own Executioners.
In Singapore the death penalty is also conducted by hanging, and from what I was told by a prison officer the gallows chamber is not located in the same block as the death row section. But the gallows chamber is definitely located somewhere in Changi Prison.

I found that people that do not support death penalty, lack sympathy for criminal's victims. Instead, these people see the criminal as the victim. If you have sympathy for the criminal's families. Why you do not have sympathy for the victim's families ? These people, who oppose death penalty, are just hypocrites. The research in USA about death penalty is flaw. If you look at the FBI files documentaries, you will heard these words very frequently - "The murder suspect is an ex-convict, who have histories of violent". If these violent criminals are given the death penalty instead of parole. The number of murder victims would have reduce significantly in USA. Many innocent people do not have to die. Death penalty is the solution. Don't see death penalty as evil when you enjoy the benefits of death penalty. Without death penalty, there will be more murder cases in society if there are more murderers roaming the street.

They were *killed*. Don't try to split hairs. Whether or not a person is killed has nothing to do with their moral character or the reasons for their being killed.
Memang suasana dia meremang lah. "Retired Appellate Court judge Mah Weng Kwai recalled his experience during his early days as a Magistrate, where he witnessed two brothers, who were convicted of murdering a police officer in Jalan Chow Kit, in 1983, were hung." Use hanged when referring to a person being suspended by a rope around the neck until dead.
Common pratice was to leave them hanging for 15-30 minutes. During the days of public executions it was often longer. After the electric chair inmates were left for hours to cool down.
Not true on the electric chair. Five minutes are allowed to elapse after the current ceases before the physician comes out to check for a pulse and report death. Thereafter, the curtains in front of the witness room are drawn and the inmate is promptly removed from the chair. He is taken to the adjacent room where sand bags are applied to the extremities for a few minutes (to prevent the joints from fusing in a seated position). After that, they are put into a body bag and taken by Office of Medical Examiner ambulance to the central office for autopsy. That was the protocol for electrocution in Virginia.
Saudi arabia had public beheading with a sword (not sure About now), I saw the execution of someone went into a house to steal, but was surprised by a mother, killed her, raped her dead body, then burned the house, I don't have pity on him whatsoever and they even hung his body after beheading to shame him, they call the hanging crucifixion in arabic. Long story short, I totally endorse death penalty and I think it should be public.
You seem to have a morbid and ghoulish obsession with the subject. But how can you hang someone whose head has been cut off? Since a dwindling number of people in Britain still like to insist they live in a Christian society, maybe it's time they read their own book. There is a commandment that tells them that must not kill. Elsewhere it says that their imaginary friend insists "Vengeance is mine".
Anything from the victim's family perspective? The agony and suffering of the victim before he died because of the two young criminals? The trauma of the victim's wife and children of having to learn that there love one life has been cut short!!
The detail of the execution is not the deterrent. It is the end result that is the deterrent. Knowing that committing murder will result in the ending of your own life is the deterrent, not how it is done.
@@robertlewis4216 It would be for some people not for others. For me, life imprisonment would be enough of a deterrent were I thinking about committing murder. As far as capital punishment goes, I am neither hard line pro nor vehemently opposed - I am happy to go along with the wishes of the majority of the society I live in on this one. I have lived long term in a country that has never had it in my life time, my own Australia, and also in a country that does, my wife's Indonesia.
There are two sides of a coin. One side belongs to the criminal and the other side the victim. The execution of the caught criminals can be seen and usually very fast, without suffering lengthy pain. However, the execution of the victim especially those done covertly (different from those shooting in the public where death occurs almost immediately), we cannot witness the fear, the tortured pain and whatever feeling that I can't find the right words to describe. We can only look at the pictures of the victims if published in newspaper but usually pixelated and have to visualize and imagine how much the victims suffered before they died. Imagine how fearful Kevin Morais was. Was he begging to the killers, was he crying and in deep pain? We only knew he was cemented in an oil drum. Was he beaten up and tortured and put in the drum while still alive? What about Altantuya. Was she begging to be spared her and the unborn in her stomach? Was she crying frantically and in deep fear and pain? We knew she must be very frightening but we can't see it and we cannot really feel it the way the victims felt. But we knew it was very frightening to be in Kevin's and Altantuya's position. Can you imagine if you or your loved one such as your wife or husband or your children is/are the victim(s). Justice must PREVAIL. We must have death penalty to prevent more killing as some criminals are not remorseful. The benefits of death penalty outweigh the cons.
The only person who can break the law without any repercussions is Vladimir Putin. He killed alot of people in Ukraine, Syria, Libya but the international law cannot touch him because he will destroy them all.
Those who are involved in the death of the death row prisoners can only find some excuses or reasons such that they can feel they have done nothing wrong. It's only human
Most executions even if botched are usually less agonizing and horrific than the innocent individuals mode of death chosen by those being executed for murder............. remember these murderers have right of legal process, appeals and all................. the victims of these murderers did not!
He seemed to forget one thing, the two brothers were murderers, and got the death penalty. It was lawfully carried out. Nobody seems to remember the victims whose lives were taken from them.
He mentioned that he was surprised to see that the condemned person's were hanging for 30 minutes. As I understand it in Britain condemned person's were hanging for an hour before they were taken down and sent to the morgue.
Yes, but the British authorities used variable drop hanging, the shearing force of the rope, broke the spinal column, causing instant unconsciousness. They were left to hang until the heart stopped due to strangulation, which takes about 20 minutes. The condemned was unaware, the drop having done its job.
In the UK the executed were taken to the prison morgue where the arresting detective who charged the man or woman with murder would have to formally confirm the identify of the executed prisoner. The prisoner was then buried in an unmarked grave within the prison grounds.
Death sentence is a must. If death sentence is horrific, then how about those who were murdered by the killer? If death sentence is gone I assure more crime and murder is going to happen.
To me it savagery lifestyle. Tantamount to revenge. If we all revenge against each other re eye for eye , we will all be blind. Punishment is warranted for brutal crime but death is up to God not humans. Because the people who carry out executions are somehow murdering as well. Just my half cent opinion. But I get where you come from. If it happens your family member is involved in a brutal crime and law of parties sentence him or her to death, I understand you will find peace that the state will kill him or her, for me nope but I agree they need to pay for their crimes.
Quite the opposite it seems, some of the safest countries on the planet do not have death penalty. It really depend on culture I think, some places probably need it because their culture is shit.
That is why public hangings were done in the old times, everyone watched and it was definitely a deterrent. Maybe time to start doing that again then those heinous crimes that get the death penalty would be reduced.
It's ironic that corruption is not subjected to capital punishment since it's impact so devastated that it left a community or in fact a nation dragged with so much issues that it bred into so many criminals activity due to hardships faced by the community. So hanging innocent people saves the lives of innocent people? How does that work. Obviously the US will have the lowest murder rate in the western hemisphere won’t it as it has the best deterrent? Much lower murder rate than Europe which has abolished the death sentence? We know the answer to both questions. You illustrate my point which is that people who advocate the death sentence do so because they rather like the idea of an execution whereas life imprisonment is too boring. But they cite the deterrent angle to justify it. Total crap.
Except it doesn't work as a deterrent. All it does is brutalize and desensitize the public. And it puts the USA in the same league as nations like Iraq, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, China, Bahrain, to name but a few. I live in a country that did away with capital punishment fifty years ago. We don't need it, we don't miss it and we don't want it back. Also in that half-century, at least ten people I know of who would have otherwise been candidates for execution, have subsequently been found innocent, thanks to new (usually DNA) evidence. In two cases I know of, exculpatory information had been deliberately ignored at the time by police and prosecutors. Plus of course, DNA evidence which wasn't available at the time, has overturned numerous bad convictions. Maybe you don't mind the notion of executing innocent people, but I find it pretty godawful. PS: Where I live, the per-capita murder rate has been falling for all the years that have elapsed since capital punishment was abolished.
I call for an “eye for an eye” law. If you rape someone to death, guess what- thats your punishment. Should be televised in my opinion but that part is arguable
Pros: > The possibility of death sentence can passively deter crime. > Gives some closure to the victims family. > Gives a reason for angry crowds to not be vigilantes and kill a suspected criminal on the spot; allowing the accused to at least defend themself in court. > Last resort, if somehow the criminal is simply too violent nd cannot be rehabilitated or let back into society, yet is sane and cannot be locked in a mental institution. Cons: > Traumatises the judge and doctor
Retired Appellate Court judge Mah Weng Kwai recalled his experience during his early days as a Magistrate, where he witnessed two brothers, who were convicted of murdering a police officer in Jalan Chow Kit, in 1983, were HANGED. He revealed this at a forum on the abolishment of capital punishment last night. The brothers were handcuffed and had white hoods covering their faces, as prison officers escorted them to the execution room at the Pudu prison. The noose was then placed around the brothers' necks, before the executioner pulled a lever, which caused the platform below the convicts' legs to open up, causing in them to be HANGED from their necks. "It was the loudest 'bang' I heard in my life. But despite the loud bang, it was total silence from them (the brothers)," Mah recalled the execution. The brothers' bodies, however, were not removed immediately, Mah said, adding that they were left hanging for about half an hour, before a doctor certified that they were medically dead. FIFY. People are "hanged" not "hung".

Death by hanging is a legally sanctioned killing of the convicted by the breaking of his/her neck (a.k.a. hangman fracture). Anything less than that is death by torture, especially '1-hour hanging'. Discussing and education that 1 hour process in a jovial mood is nothing to be proud of????
Dear Sir, death penalty never going to deter a crimes .. but the same time emotions of the victims and their families are involved. Given a life sentences is as equals to death sentences too.. Today many young youths into crimes and sad to said all are very much under aged children. We as the society also must play the parts for the awareness.
This man is being very honest. He’s not embellishing the story. He’s simply telling the story of the executions he witnessed as a judge. The way I see it is simple. Think of the murdered policeman’s family. The policeman’s family has to suffer the pain and loss of losing a loved one to murder for the rest of their lives. The criminals deserve to pay for such a crime with their life.
I did some research that during judical hanging, some prisoner's heart keep on beating although there is already brain death (medical term that the body could no longer function on its own as the brain is dead) So they left the body hanging for 30-60 minutes. And by the time guards take down the dead body, more than 90 percent by that time, the deceased's heart beat would stopped beating. The intention is not to humiliate or torture the victim but medical and legal reason.
Curious how death penalty is welcomed in the US which has a far higher murder rate than Europe where the Death Penalty has been abolished. Curious how even Russia has abolished the Death Penalty. Seems to me that the Death Penalty does not really serve as a deterrent but rather just satisfies the blood lust of some societies. Even a moron could see that if the US introduced serious gun law then the murder rate would go down but they like the drama of mass shootings and the following spectacle of an execution. With other countries it’s just a question of time before they complete their journey and evolve into a fully civilised society. The swift + clean kill if you will is obviously too try + make it quick not just for the condemned but for the people participating in carrying out the sentence. The less violence + blood and gore of a execution is too not impose a lot of mental anguish on the staff charged with carrying out the execution, that's why the USA tried to go to the lethal injection, clean, almost clinical, no blood, no chopping off of heads, no trauma like the firing squad or the electric chair but now it's getting harder and harder to get the drugs necessary to carry out the lethal injection so states are again looking at older forms of executions and hanging if done correctly is supposed to to pretty painless with not a ton of violence to the body.

All you saying the death penalty deters crime. Then why are there still so many murders, kidnappings, drug trafficking, etc? In the olden days criminals were publicly executed in the most horrific ways imaginable but even that did not prevent people from committing heinous crimes. The death penalty only serves to lessen the national financial burden of keeping criminals alive. Killing the criminals won’t reverse the effects of the crimes already committed.
That lack of full deterent is even more the case for prison sentences. As well as for fines and any other imaginable type of deterent and punishment for wrongdoings, judicial or otherwise. So..........? With a death penalty, if carried out , there would certainly be no re-offender
They were murderers. What about the policeman and his family? My sympathy is with them. These guys made the choice to commit the crime resulting in loss of life. The victim and family had no say in the matter.
The Malaysians use the old British long drop which is based on weight to deliver a drop force of about 900 lb ft. Look for Saddaam Hussein’s handing on here. He was gone in a trice.. As the judge said the sheer force of the snap of the rope breaks their neck and they are instantly knocked out and dead shortly afterwards. The horrific thing would be being in the cell near the gallows and hearing the crash knowing one day it will be you. That is the torture
Albert Pierpoint used to leave the executed Men hanging for an hour but I believe that the Doctor used to check that life was extinct straight after the drop.
The hangman had to lower the body with assistance, undress it and clean it. Hanging like gassing usually leads to voiding the bladder and possible excreta
If you shoot someone breaking into your house, that's an instant death penalty. If you have a problem with the death penalty, let me live and I will let you live.
The system used was the one used by the British. Long drop, halter not noose, table of drops to ensure instant unconsciousness and left hanging for 30 minutes. The British long drop system was about as instant as a guillotine and a lot less messy. Death is caused by the severing of the spinal chord. Unconsciousness is always instant.
The state does not have the death penalty as an option in the UK. There is however a good chance that murderers will be executed by their adversaries because there are many murders committed as revenge for murders carried out by the victim, this really skews the figures, more so when a revenge murder of a revenge murderer takes place. There are around 600 murders each year in the UK, but only about 200 convictions for murder, yet fewer than 100 murders are classed as unsolved. If the police don't catch a murderer within a matter of weeks they will often find their suspect becomes a victim, and so the cycle continues. If you murder someone there is more chance that you will in turn be murdered than there is of you being convicted. And so the madness continues.
Mind you: *Death can never be undone* ! Many executed turned out to be _innocent_ - after they got "legally" killed. Imho imprisonment for life is way better, it gives the criminals time to confront them selves with their evil deeds. And it can be undone - well, kinda - in case the inmate is found "Not Guilty" after re-examination of e.g. DNA samples, etc. No need to tell y'all I'm against Capital Punishment - in peace time. And those are just murders, there are many more instances of rapes, violent assaults and other crimes as well that could have been avoided if they had been given a measured drop and a sudden stop like they ought to have been given.
Let's hope many of these thugs are killed by fellow prisoners.
I've never thought that execution, or jail time, is either a deterrent or rehabilitation, but punishment demanded by society.

He mentioned he was a rookie then.

Yes, but the British authorities used variable drop hanging, the shearing force of the rope, broke the spinal column, causing instant unconsciousness. They were left to hang until the heart stopped due to strangulation, which takes about 20 minutes.

Much lower murder rate than Europe which has abolished the death sentence? We know the answer to both questions.

The criminals deserve to pay for such a crime with their life.
Why ? Killing the killer won't fix anything.
Bodies have ALWAYS been left to hang for an hour……don’t talk nonsense!

Until then they rank as third world countries like Iran, Iraq, and so on. Anyone disagree? Of course you do!!!!!
thats naive of you to sit in a comfy place and type.. try saying that when you loose someone you cared and you watch the convict get out after doing his time .. if your ok with that you shouldnt breed.
@@riorio745 it should defo stay for rapist, murderers etc but drug trafficking? perhaps not
What does it mean by details hid from the public? Did someone ask and they avoid answering or censored the details? Or no one really asked and so they felt that it was unnecessary to inform the public on the details? If not, people will just bring it up and whine about it or something
Lots of contries without the death penalties have low rates of murder and violence
Fact
Hanging is a barbaric way of dieing. Sure sentence the criminal to life in prison as he deserves to spend the remainder of his life away from society. All I can say is i am glad I live in Australia where hangings and shooting by fireing squad doesn't exist
I used to think like that, but having spent a fair chunk of my adult life in a country that does have the death penalty, I am easy either way - happy to go along with the wishes of the majority of the society I am living in.
No wonder crime rate is higher in Australia than sg
@@pena1950 how wrong you are Bradley about Australia having a high crime rate. First of all guns are banned in all Australian states unlike America where virtually anyone can own a gun or rifle. I can go on and on about this subject but do your research. Australia is one of the top ten countries with low crime rate especially murders. On the nightly news I might hear of a murder once every 6 months or longer.

So what if they're left hanging for 1/2 hour. They're not suffering during that time, apparently unconscious within seconds after dropping.
He was a rookie then, did you pay attention? He is just sharing the details because most people don’t know.
well doesnt seem cruel, they was criminal doing the worst thing..and maybe i've been seen even worst video kot 😑
Firing squad quick clean job done
Wrong. Hanging is quicker and less expensive.
yeah but a lot of trauma to the body + quite a bit of blood.

Forgiveness is great we agree, but people should have a choice not to forgive, not fair to take that option from because of your values, try bringing back their lost one from death, else let them have their revenge.
@@opssheesh to forgive or not is a different matter. The death of one doesn't bring the death of another back to life. Sometimes people still have a chance to turn a new leaf. Everybody needs a second chance.

Death penalty must remain
You do it
All you saying the death penalty deters crime.
Albert Pierpoint used to leave the executed Men hanging for an hour but I believe that the Doctor used to check that life was extinct straight after the drop.
pierpoint didnt have a choice, it was the sentence of death act that mandated the hanged felon left for one hour
@@geezerp1982 Interesting. Thanks
The hangman had to lower the body with assistance, undress it and clean
it. Hanging like gassing usually leads to voiding the bladder and possible excreta
Tell us too the horrific details of the crime they commit, the horrific details of the victims
Half hour? Short time. What is the problem?
So..in some point you want people to supports abolishing death sentence? It should remain..just dont break the laws that endup death by hanging.
Very well spoken, intelligent sounding man
Mr Mah the retired judge still sounds rather naive for an old man.
Because during a war it's a whole different situation..
Well this only happens in third world countries it didn't happened in Singapore.
